I called Jennings VW and a sale manager said that the invoice includes $267 for area charge and port prep ($92 for floor plan, $25 for port prep, and $150 for area charge.) Is it truth?
I'm dealing with an ego driven salesman who could tell it was my first time buying a car and my first visit to a dealership. I was looking for the 2001.5 GLX and he quoted me at driveout $31,400 (includes everything with tint and 6-CD, license, tax, etc.). Here's the catch, he's quoting me $500 over invoice AND a $279 consumer service fee that he claims is non-negotiable in Houston and he must charge it. This will take care of misc. maintenance, oil changes, etc. I told him I don't want it, (what if I moved!) and he said that can't be changed. I keep hearing quotes from this message board with cheaper prices. $31,400 is ridiculous! I would love to pay $30,000 flat. Am I crazy for thinking this is possible????

Mona, I think you are not being treated very well. RFH2 just bought the car you described for 28,500 plus tax and tags. Let the dealers know that they are going to have compete for your business between themselves and the internet. Always work up from invoice. Any number they give you above invoice should be all inclusive except for tax and tags. They all have to pay VWOA the same and all have to pay the same % of the agreed to price to the State. EVERYTHING ELSE is at the dealer's discretion and negotiable.

I bought a car similar to the one you are looking for except that it was a 5 speed for $27,281. I think the automatic is only about $1000 more. Let me know if this helps.
Regarding the extended warranty, I truly believe in it. I had a 1989 Jetta and purchased the Masterguard 4 year / 50,000 warrantly and got back every penny. At 43,000 miles I needed CV Joints as well as a totally new transmission. Prior to that I had some A/C problems. Everything was covered and I did not have to pay a penny. Just the thought that I could go to bed at night and not worry about ANYTHING that could go wrong with the car and have to pay to have it repaired was worth the price. I could travel anywhere in the country and not worry about a thing.... if I break down, just tow me to a VW dealer and let them fix it, no questions asked. To me, that comfort is worth the money. With todays new electronics all over the vehicle, I feel even more of a necessity to have the extended warranty. When I buy my new Passat in the next several weeks, I will purchase the 7 year / 100,000 warranty, which might increase my monthly payment by a few dollars, but I will have total peace of mind for the next 100,000 miles. Just my thoughts.

My wife and I just purchased our Passat GLX 2001.5 tonight with the additions of Tinted Windows, Front Cover (bra), 6 CD Disk Changer and the Paint Sealant with drive out price (TTL) of $31,657. We were told the same thing sith the Consumer Service and Documentary Fee and that they were non-negotiable (all dealers around here had that). We went to 3 different places and Demontrond gave us the best deal which was an internet price ($500 above invoice). It was $30,657 without the add-ons. I feel good about this price because it's also the Reflex Silver which is the one hardest to negotiate pricing due to popularity and difficulty keeping it in stock. I am also happy because I paid less that what I expected based on edmund's "true market value" pricing deal. If I have any remorse, it's from the add-ons but I'm okay with it because my wife feels better about having them. I'd use these numbers in negotiating. Feel free to email for further questions! Sounds like $500 over invoice is becoming pretty easily attainable. The fee thing confuses me though. Is that $500 over invoice plus destination plus fees plus TTL? The car I want is the base car with manual, luxury, and monsoon. Will they do $500 over on a lower buck car?
Had a test drive today with the 4Cyl Passat auto. The response was good and the brakes were good... from 80Mph to 0, just took about 20 metres to stop... but though it skided a bit at the end ?? it burned the tyres though.... What i liked about this car was the way it handled... and the steering wheel response... but found it to bank a bit at sharp turns... But it drove solidly... Also got to know that the new engine was actually 180HP and it was being advertised at 170Hp just so as not to annoy Audi (as A4 is 170Hp) ... So, if this is correct, the difference between 4Cyl and 6Cyl is only 10 Hp !!!! This sounds good to go for the 4Cyl if the difference is only 10Hp and save $2500 to $3000. But i didnt like the audio system in Passat, normal and monsoon. The monsoon is more powerful (Bose designed, 300W).. But it doesnt have much clarity. But i would say, check it out with the cd player and then see how it sounds.

I know we beat up on sales people a lot in the forum, but I think you owe yours an apology. Just my thoughts. What do the rest of you think?
I had talked about the braking and stuff with the dealer before i took it out for a test drive and had requested his company for it and he came along... I have bought a lot of cars from only a couple of dealers, so was able to go for a test drive... But, i had done this becz there was a new Passat with some body damage, (which i was told had happened during transportation), and hence had to go back to the factory. That is y i could (and y the dealer agreed) test drive this car a bit roughly... Hope this puts peace in all the buyers mind out there... Well, to think of it, i wouldn't do that to a new car which eventually someone is going to own/use it... and obviously, wouldn't do any harm to that....
Update: Went to another dealer in Houston last night. He claims that there is NO holdback existing for the 2001.5 passats. I argued with him, but he held his ground. I really don't have a basis to say that he is wrong.

I got the same story last night...that there is no holdback. He didn't say Passat specifically just that there is no holdback.

I live/work in Hollywood/Fort Lauderdale, Florida and I am looking to purchase a 2001.5 Passat V-6 GLX automatic (no CD). I won't pay $695 for the CD. The sale price breaks down as follows: invoice price of $27187 + destination charge ($550) + port prep/reserve ($117) = $27854.00. Then 2.5% of 27854.00 ($696) was added for a total sale price of $28550.00. Then the dealer took $4300 off for my trade-in (carmax offered me $5500 which is rough Black Book price), then added $219 for a dealer service fee, tax and tag fee ($1547.14) for a bottom line of $26016.14. Is the sale price a good one? Is 2.5% too high? Should I bargain to get it down more? Thanks for your help.
This is contradicting information. On my left, a dealer says there is no holdback for 2001.5 passats. On Edmunds.com it says holdback is 2% of MSRP. Where do I get valid data?
If it's true there is no holdback, then the dealer will probably not budge much on the amount over invoice.
I have found a dealer demo, GLX with 4-motion in my top color choice. The car has 700 miles on it. Does anyone have any advice on what kind of a price break I might expect to leverage on this car? Is it fair to try and get below invoice? I was not looking for 4-motion, but if I can get it somewhere near the range I was looking, I'd jump on the opportunity.
Mona, look at rfh2's message note. His was a GLX with Tip(automatic) and CD changer. Don't know why you need any special tinting. He says he paid 28500 including all fees, just add tax and tags. London says he paid 27281 for the same car but with a 5 speed. Both cars are 2 wheel drive. Are you getting 4motion?.. I do not know anything about Texas, but all dealers have to pay the manufacture the same invoice price at the start of the day and all have to pay the state at the end. Everything else is negotiable and at the dealers discretion. Shop around including the internet. Call San Antonio dealers and Austin dealers. Let them know you will buy only from the dealer with the best price. You don't care how they cut it. Dave
First let me profusely apologize for a typo. My rather lengthy introduction stated I visited several dealerships in the NC area. This was incorrect. This time let me write it out. I visited several dealerships in the New York City metro area. Sorry about that. In response to vwguild I did go through the internet managers as well as the fleet managers. They were stuck on numbers and would not budge. The one 28,800 fellow was the internet manager. I admit the 29,911 fellow was a sales person but he seemed to be more knowledgeable than most and really did try to meet my numbers. If you can believe the scene he went to his boss who called his boss at home (it was a Sunday). I was in touch with this fellow by phone quite often and he called me several times and he really appeared genuine and sincere. He knew I was serious. His boss just would not move off the price. The rest is history.
Beachboy2, unfortunately Volkswagen is not really offering any special finance rates on either the 2001 or 2001.5 Passat at this point. The best rates that you can get on these cars through VW Credit prior to April 2nd are 7.19% in some states and 7.49% in others for consumers with the best credit ratings. If your credit is not in great shape, the rates that you qualify for will be higher.
Read all your feedback. With glx, automatic, 6-DC I can't get lower than $30,900 (includes tax, title, fees, everything except extended warranty). Now I will move beyond the Houston area and check Austin out and Dallas. Maybe with the economy the way it is, Dallas and Austin is hurting more (Houston is driven on oil and gas prices). Still haven't heard from anyone about a valid holdback existing. I heard from a dealer that no holdback exists though edmunds.com says it's 2% of MSRP. Any response on the holdback and if I can get lower driveout than $30,900.
Mona, This 2 wheel drive, right? What is the %tax in Texas(Houston) and how much is title? Without those number it is hard to tell what kind of deal it really is. You should be able to get close to the following:

I'm from Connecticut, and tomorrow will be picking up a 2001 GLS V-6 4motion w/cold weather, luxury package, and Monsoon. Price w/out taxes is 26.6k. It is a demo, w/430 miles. I can't help but feel that I'm maybe taken advantage of. Would appreciate any input.
The only thing I would say to your situation as that my 6 CD changer is costing $395. If yours is just single, I'd question that. Montrond Volkswagon (N. I-45) offers the 6 CD for that. Tint is a good deal, ours was $145. I think you got near same deal but we put in more toys. I'm a pretty good buyer and was satisfied with mine. Your deal is nearly identicle with the exception of add-ons. I'd take it but that's just me. Good for the Houston area!
You are spending almost $27k on yesterdays newspaper. Why? As an extremely happy owner of a 2000 GLS V6, I must say that I would relish the opportunity to get a 2001.5 just to take advantage of the new colors! Do yourself a favor, get out of the deal and figure out what you really want, because, believe me, when you are spending that kinda loot, what is an extra $1k to get absolute latest offering from VW. Also, we both know that this winter was bad, and our fwd 5-speed was amazing in the snow. Might want to rethink the 4motion as well, it is really unnecessary. Good luck!
Unfortunately, I found myself in a situation where I needed to replace a car wrecked in an accident(not my fault), and this was the only GLS w/4motion we could find - 3 other dealers were telling us they would need to order. I think you're right, though, maybe I should take a step back.
Before rushing into something and kicking yourself later...go to Enterprise and spend $29 per day on a rent a wreck. If you are located, or looking in southern Connecticut, I have a few dealer contacts that might be able to help! Btw...is that a "new body" Passat or a 2001?

That price of $395 for the cd changer is a great price. The lowest around here for the *in-dash cd* is $395. There is a dealer here in TX quoting $695 for the cd-changer!!!

I don't know but would complain about it. Let them show you the invoice with their charges. I think you should be able to save another 281 to 398...

Nobody really knows much about it. I like the body style and everything I just don't want to get a piece of junk that's gonna break down every other day. My sister has a Jetty and her engine is almost gone and her warning buzzards always malfunction, also her alternator is messed up. I've been saving for a long time and I really need some advice. Also, Does anybody know why they stopped making them in 1994. Are they Junk??

Just be a pest, ask to talk to the owner etc. Again, don't let $300 drive a $27k mistake! Regardless of the transmission, with the extra weight of the V6 engine coupled with traction, the car will not get stuck! As I have mentioned in past postings, the Passat is my wifes car, I have a 2000 EB Expedition. More times than not, we took the VW in bad weather due to its superior "real world" handling in poor conditions. I wanted the 4motion in the Passat, but couldn't justify the added expense when looking at its very minimal (if any) added benefit. Good luck!
AFK, Why bogus? At least in NC, (I live in Chapel Hill), the license or tags is what goes to the State. It runs about $60. Some dealers tack on a $40 to $100 doc fee. Some do not. For instance when my wife bought her Civic last year, 2 dealers quoted invoice plus $300. Dealer A was invoice + $300 then $300 Dealer prep + Tax + Tags ($60) + $40 doc fees. Dealer B was invoice + $300 + Tax + Tags ($60). Who do you think we bought from?. I am not denying that it cost to process but by adding discretionary fees after the negotiation is bogus. Dealer A should have been up front and said I am charging Invoice + $640 cause that is what he was doing. Dave
First on the Corrado - I dated someone who had an early 90's Corrado (can't remember exactly what model year) and it was a mess! He had a lot of problems with it and ended up trading it in after only a few months for a new Jetta. Couldn't tell you if his situation was unusual for the car, but based on that I wouldn't want to buy one.
Second, I will be picking up my new 01.5 GLX tonight. It's Fresco Green (what a great color!) with black leather. I got the car, in-dash CD and all dealer fees for $28,300 - only paid taxes and tags on top of that so I think I got a great deal! I can't wait to pick it up and drive it home tonight!
Last Night - Bachman WV, Louisville, KY ---great experience, great price... no hassles....GLS I/ everything $28,600, MSRP was 30,075. Maybe no excellent deal, but I thought the sales staff and management were exceptional to deal with. Love that tiptronic! For anyone interested, Mark Crier was the salesman (told him I would bring him some business). 1 888 258-5203. It's worth a call for anyone who's shopping.

There are very few aftermarket warranties that I think are worth even considering (CNA is one of the very few).
As a rule, the ones backed by the manufacturer are, as a general rule, the only way to go.
