Its down to a 2003 Mazda 6i and a 2003 Subaru Legacy L SE. We decided to spend more and buy a nicer car.
I think its going to be the Legacy, we've had 2 Subarus and loved them both.
with the '02 Xterra
Thanks
No slider right .? -- the miles are ultra low, good color, good options, the 2wd will hold this one back in your area .. on the trade side, you should be seeing somewhere in the $15's ..
Good question on the depreciation thing .. but it's kinda hard to explain, each vehicle, each manufacturer have there own type of marketing idea/concept.
Some vehicles are much more popular than others, some get "perceived" as good vehicles, when there not, some are built in vast quantities which can cause that market to drop, some use leases to expand that market .. then the reliability factor falls in, if you spent $20 grand and it doesn't get you anywhere except to the service dept, then that dude will get traded early .. or perhaps, the "new" the "popular" the "coolest" the "least expensive" makes folks change steering wheels and the other type of vehicle goes cold .. a better example might be the "3" series BMW's, they have a Great lease program right now, darn cheap, so lot's of folks are stepping in ~ in the meantime, the owners of the 98/00/02's are going to taking bad whooping at trade time, that's why you see so many at the auctions now, the dealers don't want to get "hung" in them ..
But to answer your question (I think) .. they can change daily, weekly, some hang in limbo for 3/5 months at a shot, like Volvo's, lot's of the older Yota's/Acura's stay static for 50/60,000 miles ..
I hope this helps ....

01 Pathy LE 4x4 18k mi...loaded with leather, Atl. dealer asking 21, 675."
I don't know about the Pathy: If the HL will do ya, what do you want with an old-fashioned 4x4 that is great in the muck but doesn't have real, usable AWD? The HL will get close to 30mpg on the freeway, and the Pathfinder 19 on a good day. But that's for you to decide.
Price: Buy a new Highlander. Base 4cyl 2wds are sold for not much over invoice, and are advertised around here for $22k (or $23k, I forget). No contest, even if you can negotiate another $1,200 off of the '01. I don't see the sense in giving up two years and 19k of a brand new vehicle for a paltry $2-3k in price difference.
Repeat after me: "Buying used usually saves money. Buying new sometimes saves money."
I think of the HL as a tall Camry wagon... nice vehicles... I considered one instead of a Sienna until I found out they clogged up the pass-throgh to the rear... apparently most Americans prefer the center console... lots of them don't fit through that narrow an opening... whoops, did I just say that...?
On the Nissan, I can't help ya... I'm out of my depth here.
Good luck,
-Mathias
Some of it can be on how the info is read or perceived, dealers don't put Xtra, Xtra clean in anything, which is understandable and depending on the trade, some just might not know what the true value is ~ As an example, a Honda dealer "might" not know what the real value is, on a 99 4x4 low mile Suburban ..
Terry :-)
The Yota's are good vehicles, this one I agree 100% with Mathias on, kinda Camryish, 4 banger, 2wd, no toys ` that doesn't make it bad, it makes it what it is. The miles are low, so the Dealer might have the $17's in it, could have as much as $18,5, so a "fair" price for both would be $20,0 ..
The Pathy is a LE with all the toys, low miles and it's a 4x4 (if needed) .. they are doing "around" the low 19's on the dealer side .. so with an asking price of $21,9 is not bad, try $20,5 and go from there ..
Before you do any dealing, get a drive in BOTH of them .. give them a copy of your license and Drive each on your roads, hills, Malls for an hr or so - then make a decision.
Remember ~ Always buy and drive what You like .!
Terry.

However, When I went to drive the Pathy, the salesman did most of the driving. He said it was their policy to drive it off the lot, but he kept driving and driving...the gas gauge was really low, so literally 2 minutes after I started driving he said we had to head back. I told him that wasn't very much time to get a good feel for the car, but he insisted it was about to run out of gas. He kept asking about my husband. Even after I told him several times that my husband wouldn't be making the purchase, I would, he didn't seem very interested in helping me. I didn't catch a good vibe from this guy; I felt like I needed a shower after riding around with him. Needless to say, I won't be going back to that dealership.
The Toyota dealership that I visited was a completely different experience. The salesman seemed very interested in helping me, and I drove the HL for quite a while.
Thanks again for the input. Hopefully, I'll be driving my new ride soon!
She thinks she want's something smaller, new Corolla, new Civic, she's not sure. But before she grabs us and we go trekking all over gods green earth what do you think she will see on a trade, some of the books show $22 and her credit union says $28, I can't take the pressure.
Again as always, thank you for all your special help and don't forget we owe you some big steaks in Philly when you come back.
M.
If she really insists on getting something smaller no matter what, she should not take anything less than $26,5K absolute bottom.
Were I you, I would make sure you do not let here even talk trade in until you have the dealer cash price for the smaller car, then get a real cash trade in for her Acura. Then if she still wants to proceed, offer her $500 more than the dealer will give for the car.
I really suspect the dealers are going to try and go $23K to $24K (real money) on that car, especially trading it in on a Corolla or similar.
Do everything you can to talk here out of trading it in. If it is the fuel prices and the slight fuel economy increase, put it in dollars and sense in the loss she will take on the Acura versus how much gas money she will be saving.
Ok color, it's an auto, tops, low in miles and based on what you are telling me, it's a clean one .. the good news is, spring is on it's way for all the yankee's and that's a big help for you .. 2 months ago, nobody would want it, now it's probably worth in and the high $14's, low $15's on a trade if needs -0- ..
Terry.
It's just sheet metal and the dealer can get another one ..
Terry ;-)
I have a feeling if this is a real deal "baby doll", she is going to be looking at $23ish on a trade .. the way to go with this beauty is, to waddle down Retail Rd put in a Great 5 liner Ad, describe the vehicle to a tee and have an asking price of $27,9 .. and let the first person wearing the American Flag take it proudly home for $26/$27,5 ..
This shouldn't take long .. I'm always looking for the ultra nice low milers and this one is a hard to find, hard to get, most folks stack up major miles on RL's, they just don't break ~ Personally, I would keep it.
Let me know ...
Terry.
Their only saving grace, is to retail out of them - I understand it, but I don't really agree with that type of "thinking" or perhaps the lack of .. Me, I'm a firm believer of "turn em' and burn em'" - I don't car how pretty a vehicle is, how low the miles are, how ultra nice it is ~ if it ain't moving, it's going bye bye in 70 days or less ..
But if you ever need some help, let me know and I will be more than happy to help .. a dealer would rather take a weak Retail deal, than to get hammered at the block. That's why that dealer took $25,5, probably might have taken less .. the alternative was going auction side and maybe seeing $21/$23ish ..

The car is located in Cincinnati. The dealer has it listed for $9,500 ... but he has had it on the lot for 65 days ... while he has been moving out a lot of high-end inventory.
This car is in excellent shape. The dealer sends about 80-90% of his trade-ins to the auctions and generally only keeps the best.
My gut tells me that $7,200 COD takes it home ... in 30 days. Any thoughts?
Let me know on this one ..
Terry.
However, he will move it in 90-105 days. I will be patient.
Thanks for teh input.
50,500 miles, no accidents, no paintwork, no smoking, all-around clean vehicle, one owner.
Two-tone green/silver with matching fiberglass Hop Cap.
Usual pwr stuff, cold AC, 5.9L auto, tow pkg, class IV hitch, electric brakes.
Maintenance done by owner with 3k oil changes; new battery & plugs, will need tires before next winter, but fine for now.
Buddy of mine is selling privately, what's it worth at the block/on the street?
Many thanks as always,

What are used 2003 Camry LE autos for in/around Portland, OR going for in the auctions? What do you think is a reasonable offer for one? Given the soft economy and Toyota's 0% on new Camrys, I expect the used market is taking it on the chin right now. This should translate into significant savings on used O3s, right?
Also, Consumer Reports rates the O2 Camry as only of average reliability. Does this match the experience of the car professionals on this board in terms of problems seen, etc?
Also, is it likely that there are 03 Camrys coming off 6 month leases? Is there a way to get access directly to them directly as a consumer, or will they all go to auction/dealers?
Also, if I do find a Camry LE with a relatively rare option combination (e.g with Side airbags) does the fact that it isnt common get reflected in higher used values down the line?
Finally, I'm looking at used 03 Camrys because the 02 Camry LE got only 2 stars on govt. side- impact crash tests; the 03s got almost 4 stars (3 stars, but on the 3/4 star border). I've looked for 02 Camrys with side-airbags, havent found one yet.
Long list of questions
Regards,
AK
$13,9 would probably be a good asking price with a Great detail ..
And yes, you can come out of your room now, I don't want you in there with all those particles.

Ok here are the specs.
2000 Chevy Impala LS - Regal Blue (they don't make this color anymore)
21,500 K miles on it.
Original owner.
Leather seats, DS is power
Keyless entry
Power windows and locks
spoiler
Um, cruise on the steering wheel.
CD player (one cd)
ABS, 16 in wheels (needs tires though)
Traction control
Information gage (like low oil, tire pressure, low gas or coolant)
Air bags and DS side air bag
RDS radio
Automatic 200hp engine 3800 series
Huge back seat - seats 3 easily and huge trunk. Great family car, would think it would sell easily.
Anyway, not sure what else you need.
I got offered 7k. That is a little low in my opinion. Do dealers NOT want this car?
Thanks
Nicole
Terry.
I'm guessing here, but they are probably asking in that $18,9/$19,5 range - when it comes to options, don't go crazy and don't let them *know* that "You gotta have the side bags" .. act kinda passive, and if you get em' fine, if not that's fine too, this will keep the price more in line .. as a matter of fact, look at the ones without first, then see the price difference as you slowly meander down to them - I can't see them getting more than $300/$500 more, they certainly don't look hard enough for em' at the auctions .l.o.l..
I hope this helps ....

Using Edmunds - I thought I would expect between Good/Fair to be honest with myself - which I though it would be in the 7k range. When I use NADA - I am getting 10K for a trade. What do you think I can get in the Northeast area for this vehicle?
I sent this to you via email as the board's database was being update, but I'll post this for the benefit of the board...
I'm in a bit of an urgent situation as I am probably going to negotiate later today. Carman over in the lease area referred me to you.
Here's my situation.... I'm looking at buying a used BMW that was returned early on a lease. It was a steel gray 2002 325i (spt pkg, prem. pkg, manual, xenon lights, heated seats) the lease sale price was $32,702 and was leased around 2/02 and returned 2/03. The car has 18k miles on it and is located in NJ. Car also had a ding on the driver side wheel well that had some minor scratches on it (Ding about size of tip of index finger). Driver side door also has a small ding (size of eraser), but no scratches. Otherwise car is clean, but hasn't been reconditioned since he just got the car in last weekend. What do you think might be buyback price or price at sale in wholesale auction? I'm willing to slip in a reasonable profit (is 2k reasonable??), but I just don't want to get hosed buying from this used car dealer who bought it at auction. What do you suggest as a bottom line offer? I'm thinking around $23k based on soft mkt, condition and Edmund's prices for private party. A quick reply would be immensely appreciated. Thanks.
1994 Ford Escort LX/Sport, caymen green/gray, 2 dr, 5-speed, no stereo, sunroof, alloy wheels, no pwr stuff (well, pwr mirrors, but the switch doesn't work), 105k, runs excellent. Its not the prettiest car in the world, there honestly isn't a body panel without some sort of ding or dent. The interior is in fairly good shape and it drives really well. Its sneakers have a good amount of tread, the front are new and the rear 50%. The glass is all good in the car and other than cosmetic stuff, its a great car.
I'm thinking $1500 obo and take 1000/1250 and kick it down the road. Am I in the ball park?
We have our new car all picked out so little car needs to get on down the road unfortunatly. Can't afford to insure 3 vehicles.
2002 Chevy Prizm base, 20k miles, dark red, 5speed, power locks, CD, cruise. Great condition (put in service 6/02). Single previous private owner, all oil change records, clear Carfax title. I am in the Twin Cities.
I bought this car recently, but due to an unexpected change at work, I will have to commute to a farther away office and fight rush hour traffic. Weighing my options on getting a midsize automatic.
Car is a 1988 Toyota MR2 2door coupe, 5-speed manual, not supercharged, 118,000 miles.
1 owner, no smoking, interior and exterior in good condition, no rips/tears/cracks/stains, only 1 real door ding, garaged most of its life. No leaks or rust, starts and runs perfectly, not burning oil, A/C still cold.
Includes power windows/locks, factory aero kit, alloy wheels, leather steering wheel and shift knob. Black paint, gray/black interior.
Car will soon need new timing belt, coolant flush and 2 tires.
Located in Pacific northwest US
Please let me hear your opinions on value for trade-in or private sale
I noted the '88s and '89s (non-supercharged) going for $2,500-3,500 - I saw several examples. Your best bet is a good detail and a great local ad, as well as an on-line ad and a shot on ebay. I don't see why you wouldn't get close to $3K.

All the incentives that GM and the rest of the domestics are throwing at new car deals are now coming back to haunt the resale values of these cars, very big time. $7k doesn't sound that far off the mark to me...
Nicole
Since your profile doesn't contain your e-mail address, I can't send you the article. In any case, it implies strongly that the bid you got on your car is right on the market money at the moment.
Your car is a great candidate for a retail sale - you certainly stand to do a heckuva lot better than trading the car. You'll lose the tax advantage of trading (in my state, $10,000 trade equals $600 in taxes), but I think you'll do much better taking that route.
