Seems that you like updates so... I sold my truck yesterday (post #12580). Flashback, it was a '95 Ranger STX, drk blue, MA area, ext cab, 4X4, 4.0L, auto, cap, liner, all the toys plus some custom stuff, 92K, like an '00 throughout. You nailed it at $3,0 trade side... bullseye. You suggested $5,9 on the curb, and to send it packing at $4,0-4,5.

Well, I'm happy to tell you I put it out at $6,3 with a nice fat 5-liner (couldn't resist, it was my baby after all). Got 4 hits the second day, first guy plunked down $6,0 cash. The STX has ridden off into the sunset, and I'm counting my money. Thanks again for all the help on this one Terry.

.... Of Course they don't want you to buy it .l.o.l.. it's Xtra low in miles, they are extremely hard to get or find, they will buy it themselves from the leasing co. for $500 under the residual .. put a CPO on it, throw some wax at it and sell it for $27/$28 .. I wouldn't want you to buy it either .. l.o.l...

    2001 model year
    ~40,000 miles
    2wd on both

all the popular options on boths

I'm looking for what I should pay at the dealers lot not private party.

    Thanks in advance

Do all dealers generally only give the value of the chasis on a conversion van trade-in?

I have a 2001 E-150 Midwest Van conversion. I am thinking about trading in. The NADA guides list the conversion at ~$5000 wholesale and the van at ~$13000 trade-in....

I have heard horror stories about only being offered the value of the cargo van...Are these true or could I expect to get the wholesale value of the conversion as well....especially since I'm sure the dealer will include that in his retail resale price!

I am looking for some input on trade-in value.

    I have a:
    97 Ford Explorer 4X4 XLT 4dr
    87k miles
All the bells and whistles except sunroof and leather
It has minor paint damage (door dings, etc)

The only major problem is there is a little front-end damage from a minor collision. The exterior body parts are not damaged (bumper, grill, etc), but the bumper is at an obviously incorrect angle (pointing up a little) and the headlights are out of line. It is a job for a body shop.

My question is how much this damage may affect my trade-in value? Is it better to suck up the cost of the repairs in hopes that it will be made up in the trade-in value?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Ken

Or did the "new books" come out, and values across the board dropped here just recently?
  • tomcat630tomcat630 Member Posts: 854
    yeah, my ZX5 dropped from 12,3k to 11,7 :(
  • KCRamKCRam Member Posts: 3,516
July 1 started a new fiscal quarter, so yes indeed new values have indeed been established. Expect another drop on October 1 which to the industry begins 2004, regardless of when you actually purchased your vehicle.

For example, I got my 1996 Dodge Ram on May 24 1996, but on October 1 1996, it was 1 model year old, even those its chronological age was only a hair over 4 months.

...... If it's Cleeean, a nice one, looks, drives and shows new, then you shouldn't have a problem selling it ..

These ZX5's are popular and get a lot of action ~ try to find one at the auctions with looow miles .. right now a nice one with 12k/15kish will do the ultra high $8's, low $9's at the block, by the time they get em' home they have almost $10 in them .. most dealers are asking $11,9 for the ones with 25/35k ..

                             Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... Some of the books have changed, but they need to tell the dealers at the auctions cuz' right now, most of the prices are going right out of the books ...!

...... Vans are like blondes, some are real and some ain't - if you know what I mean ..

            Who's the conversion co ...?

    leather .. ? cloth ... ? hi-top .. ? low-top .. ? Disney package ... ? dual air ... ? size motor .....? miles ..... ?

If YOU don't know this stuff you can get crushed at trade time ..

There's as much as a difference in the Conversion co,s as there is blonde's ....

                 I N F O ......!

                  N

                   F

        I N F O

         N

          F

...... With some of the manufacturers, model year change doesn't make much difference - depending on the change .l.o.l. .. right now, a super clean 98 SC300 with 80k will do the strong $14's at trade time .. if it's a "baby doll" and the right area of the country it could see $18/$19 on the retail side ..

Now on the other side of that coin, the New ES300's are weak and kinda cold, might see $27/$28,0 at the auction with 10k .. but take the old body style a 01 with 20kish and it will do $22/$23,0ish .. the car business is a funny business, it's kinda like water ~ it's seeks it's own level - in a hurry .!

The Van is a Midwest Vans SR3000 conversion..

    5.4 liter V8 with 27500 miles....a 2001 Ford

...... 00 LX with an auto and almost 60k .. well you know the deal, if it's a ok one, should see the the high $6's, low $7's - if it's super clean, the mid $7's the miles aren't helping on this one ...

The zoom zoom zoom, probably has the high $12's, low $13's in it (it's just a 4x4 DX) .. add a little this and that and $15,9, she should be able to trade for her vehicle and $8ish ..

                       I hope this helps ...

Can you help? It has only 46200miles. 2nd owner. Carfax looks ok.

He said he probably can sell to me at 13500 if I buy it soon. Is that a good deal?

"All" leather. You might be surprised how little is really leather and not naugahyde.

Usually it's just the seating surfaces.

I hear that "all leather" pretty often.

..... The bad thing is, these Acura's start breaking down around 200k .. so you only have another 160k to go :) .. premium package ...?

$13,5 is a little steep, low miles, good history, hard to find .. private/dealer seller ...?

It's more than I would pay on the retail side, but if it's super ultra killer clean, brand spankin' new Dunlops, service is 110%, glows in the dark, then you gotta go with with it .. personally I feel $12,5 is all of it, but then again how many of these do you see around with 40k ...

                            Terry.
  • twhantwhan Member Posts: 45
I am not sure if it has the premium package. It has climate control, moonroof, and a lot of fancy stuff. History is clean and the owner didn't drive much(He has a M-Benz and a SUV). He just replaced the wheel with bigger RSX wheels. Tires look new too. I don't think he did service (I didn't ask) too much since he only put 20,000 on it after got it. One thing I have noticed is the service light is on and he think he just forgot to reset it.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Get it checked out and find out "How Much" .. forgot to re-set it ..? oh yeah, I always use that line .. I'm sorry you ran out of gas, I forgot to put some in it ..

So 'bout how much of a drop should I be looking for in October? As much or more than it dropped the beginning of this month?

Yes...I realize that the auction is where the real numbers are at, but seems like most private sellers I've talked to price based on the books...and hopefully book values can be employed in negotiations to bring 'em down.

Now...as far as auction values are concerned, when does the yearly drop occur? Or does it just slowly slide all year? Or ???

Now...as to Lexuses....my SC 400 took nearly a 10k hit in the 17 months I had it...I don't know if that was because of the SC 430, the economy, or the fabled 5 year dropoff.

Terry, one last thing...I think I've found an M3...'01, *all options* except for park distance control, dark metallic blue with brown & black interior, 14.5k miles, needs new rear tires, one door ding, otherwise flawless (supposedly), no paintwork, located in Indianapolis...what would you put it at private party? I'm thinkin $39k
  • twhantwhan Member Posts: 45
Terry, would you please recommend a place to do the inspection? Dealer or independent mechanic or national store chain(like pepboys, midas)? which one is better? Thanks.
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
develop a good relationship with a mechanic whether he is independent, Pep Boys, whatever.

A couple of years ago, I was shooting the breeze with the service advisor at one of the Pep Boys here in Chicago. Found out that he was a Lone Ranger freak. Took him a CD ROM with 100 mp3 files of old shows. Now, my car goes into the shop at 8 am on Saturdays and is out by 9 am. The guy also gives the car a good lookover.

It helps if you have a mechanic friend who can go out shopping with you ...

Looking to trade my 97 A4 1.8T Quattro AWD in Connecticut:
Black exterior, a few door dings (nothing major-- I think there are 3, maybe 4)
Off-white (ecru?) interior in 'perforated leatherette' (the Audi euphemism for VINYL)
    83K miles
    5-speed manual
    Cold Weather package
    Power moonroof
    non-smoker, clean history, no accidents
Needs new tires, could use a polish/waxing since there are some minor surface scratches that could be buffed out.
Some pitting on the alloy wheels from brake-dust hanging around too long (corrosive stuff apparently)

Just had new timing belt, new water pump, tune-up, also new fan clutch

Probably needs new lower control arm on the driver's side (had passenger side control arm replaced last year)

New rotors and brake pads on all 4 wheels last year (approx. 20K miles ago)

Any ideas what I can expect for trade-in? Thanks.

...... Good morning Megan .. great description, thanks. !

It's a V6 2wd, short on miles, it's an XE .. no parking lot kisses, no internal organs missing, just a clean one .. now is the time to be cutting this puppy from the herd, come the winter time the Seattle dealers don't get too comfy with the 2wd crowd .. trade side, in and around the high $14's, maybe the low low $15's .. is this a domestic dealer ..? this "sounds" like they don't know what they are looking at and sometimes being cute and 23 doesn't help ...

                            Terry :)
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... Me personally .. I would spend the Xtra $100 or so and have a Acura dealer eyeball it .. never trip over the dollars to get to the dimes.

..... Good questions, I dunno if I have good answers ..

It's always kinda hard too tell, but to use an approximated time, the late fall - dead winter and snow up to your artichokes doesn't help .. right now is a very funny time, rates are super cheap, so you can buy a 00 ABC and get 4.9% at most lenders.

I keep reading how there is such a glut of used cars, but dealers are paying more now for CLEAN used vehicles than they were paying in May .. see the problem is, most folks think their 2001 XYZ with 55k is a nice and "wanted" vehicle - it's not, but they really believe it is -- nice, clean, low mileage vehicles always sell ~ the words here being *nice* clean* low mileage* .. a 02 with 25k is just average, a 03 with 15k is just average, nothing special, nothing major - just one of many, not one of few ..

See, the glut is on just ho-hum average vehicles, needs tires in 3k, smoked up, scratches, kisses, wheels gaffed up from grinding curbs, hasn't had a bath since 9/11 .. but trying to convince a seller is a different story though ... but let em' sit for 3/4/5 weeks, then they get a "come to Jesus" meeting, the time, the math, the effort, the "are you nut's.?" in their own driveways .. finally the light goes on -- what ..? my 55k ABC is only worth xxxxx ..? Aaahh Yeah, look around at your competitation, it's tuff and they will negotiate on that 15k vehicle .. it's not any different with selling a house or a boat, if you just have a bunch of lookers and no buyers and it's been sitting for 1/2 months, then it's time to *Wake Up* and drop that price and get the ego out of the way .. thats why God made auctions .. :-)

If you drive down any city street in America you will see bunches of homes for sale, Fisbo's, Joes Clam's and Real Estate co, etc, etc. .. everyone says the same thing, it's the market, it's the economy, it's 9/11, it's to close to school time, etc, etc, -- it's not, maybe if they weren't 10/20% over market value and got that false pride out of the way they would have sold it 9 months ago .. hmmm.

                       14.5k miles == needs new rear tires ..? $39 .?

hello, light going on yet ...?

                            Terry.

    ............ Please ... !!

Stop with the Zipcodes already .. I'm not the Post Office, Fed-Ex or your cousin Bert ..

                 Where do you live ....?

I don't care and I don't want your vehicle, I got plenty and I don't have the time to look it up .. it makes it a lot easier if you say - "hey, I'm in NY, Utah or whatever -- you guys/ladies are killing me with this Zipcode stuff .............. gheez.

Sorry, from now on you are gonna get a PASS ..

    I've got a two-year old BMW with a V6 and the 5-speed transmission.
It's got low hiway miles, and has been in an accident but now you can hardly tell.
The interior is in good condition. Color is metallic.
The location is Latitude: 42.7276230, Longitude: -84.4835663.
I'd like to know the value.

  • spatulamanspatulaman Member Posts: 157
Hello light? Are you implying its been driven hard? Funny thing is, 14.5k is actually longer than these tires should've lasted...the're soft compound and usually do good to make it to 12k. This guy must've driven like grampa....called the dealer for service recs, this guy even took it to the dealer to have the air adjusted in the tires.

This guy has had the car for a while now, and has already come down from $44.9k to $41.8k

I'm in 19446, how ya doin'?

Kidding - you're certainly right about the zip code stuff - you're providing a priceless service for folks here for free, taking your valuable time - the least people could do is write down their friggin' city and state! It makes a difference, as we all know...

GLE, loaded. Seller is asking for 7400(firm), originally asking for 8100. What do you think, Terry? It got low mileage considering the price. But it has a accident and the rear bumper has been replaced(That was 7 years ago). Senior driven. Thanks a lot for your help.

My brother is considering selling his vehicle, here are the specs:

    96 Chevy Blazer LS 4x4
    black, gray cloth
    just over 90k miles
    the usual CD, pw/pl/pseat
body decent, no rust but a few scratches/scuffs
bad stuff: ABS light on, a/c blows warm, power seat inop (I'm guessing it's a fuse, I'm gonna check it)

I'm gonna be honest, this thing is clearly 'average', there are five similar trucks on my block alone and his is not the nicest. I told him on trade probably like $3500 and he might see $5k on the street if the gods are smiling on him. Whaddya think?

    5 speed manual trans.
    Black Leather
    Power Moonroof
    Alloy wheels
    Heated Seats
    Single dealer installed CD player
32k eeeeeeeeasy highway miles. Car is in good condition.

Thanks, enjoy reading through the forum.

...... Ok, I got my GPS out and I see you are in Guatemala, a little hot there this time of the year .. a V6 ..? it's only worth half as much as the V12 .. 5 speed, oh that's good, all the Nuns at the churches loves those .. metallic is good, sure beats no paint at all and above all, it's only probably, could be 2 years old .. great, it could be worth between $6,700 and $21,546.89 on the second Tuesday of every other month ..

                   I hope this helps ...

My neighbor is hoping to get rid of (Chicago, north side):

94 Buick Skylark Custom 4-door (Grand Ams ugly cousin)
    Cubs hat blue/blue interior, 3.1L V6 automatic
power windows, locks, a/c, AM/FM (no CD or cass.)
body and interior quite good, no real damage
98.4k miles, tires OK, new muffler, runs great

    wants to buy:

    92 Jeep Wrangler base model
    aftermarket face-off CD player, 4x4, 4-cylinder, 5-speed manual transmission
black, gray interior w/back seat (driver's torn), new looking soft top and hard top
Body pretty good for a '92 Jeep in Chicago, no rust through, a few scratches and bumper scrapes but very presentable, better than average.
    150k miles

TMV private party on both are like $1800-ish, the Jeep supposedly takes a $700 hit for the miles alone. Ouch.

Knowing where we live, I don't get it. Finding a $2k Jeep (asking price $2500) is hard here, they get snapped up, especially in Summer. Lots of DePaul brats, former frat boys and young grads fighting over them, miley or not.
The Buick, uh, no. Frankly, I don't think he'll be able to give the thing away unless he takes it to the burbs or maybe the south side. It's just not a car anyone wants. My point, TMV means nothing if one car is hot and one is undesirable.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... "Sounds" like about a nick for the front bumper .. the miles are a little tall, it's a 97 and there is about 8 million out there you are competing with .. I'm thinkin you are lookin' at the ultra high $4's, low $5's on a trade .. but go to a few real deal body guys and see what they say first, the dealer might be thinking $2 grand to fix it ..

                         Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Ooooh yeah, the Buick with the hair lip .. hey right now, this time of the year you can't touch Jeeps, they are doing crazy money at the auctions and the dealers will pay all of it .. but being the dummy I am, I was buying those critters in April/May, like a squirrel saving up nut's for the winter.l.o.l.. I musta pumped 25+ up north, half the psycho students in the Finger lakes and the Dells are driving em' now ..

Now the Buick, that's a different story .. it will sell, but it needs to be seen. If you have a friend with a piece of dirt on a main drag - and you Clean it up, cold air, it will sell, the V6 saves this puppy - $2,900 in the paper and $1,5/$2,5 sends it off to summer camp ..

                           Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... Great description, thanks -- Well it's the right area for a Quattro, miles aren't too too bad .. but it needs some work here .. the paint looks like D-Day, the wheels have had mortar fire, it "sounds like a ruff ol' car and it's a handshaker .. you need to have a full blown detail on this pup and finish any service, a dealer will pick it apart and probably hit it $2 grand back of real money ..

Remember, it's not what you say, it's how it's said .. it not how it looks, it's how it's perceived .. after raising the dead, you should be seeing the high $5's, low $6's ..

May the Force be with you ...

                          Terry.
