(or the fact that I'm soon buying one, so of course that must mean values will decline! LOL)

Clearly, to my mind, the $7500 was a [non-permissible content removed] offer to try and recoup some profit on the new car deal I got. Do I go back and tell them I can get better trading in for other cars ? Would that help ? Selling privately is a pain I'd prfer to avoid though I know I can get more than $10K for it.
Is it an option to sell to a dealer outright ? Would they be interested without selling me a new car and would I get the same money ? I suppose I could try and find out but any forewarned information from the experts here would help me. Thanks again guys.
I may have my Explorer sold. Stay tuned. A girl who used to work for me said her husband is interested, and would be calling me tonight or tomorrow. I hope he doesn't hang out here. :-)
I have a dealer looking for a clean '98 3.5 RL Premium for me, preferable in black, since the 12 or so he has in stock all seem to have exterior issues. He called me today about a Charcoal Gray one with a black interior. I looked at it a couple weeks ago, but it looked like the driver's door had been keyed, but it was clean otherwise. He said he would be willing to get the door painted, but I know paint work would reduce the value, and I obviously don't want one with the scratch. It's a premium model, and has 28k miles. Asking price is $29k which I know is high, but the salesman told me they mark up the asking prices because they are getting beat up so badly by dealing customers. From the ads they have been running in the paper, they have been doscounting the '97 and '98 RLs from $1.5k - $6k below asking price. They can't seem to give them away here in Columbus OH, and they never seem to have less than 10 in stock. The other Acura dealer usually only has 1-3 in stock at a time, and they seem to sell one every week or two. What's a fair price, and should I even consider it if the door needs to be painted?
Thanks,
Quentin
You are rignt, they are definitely way up there!
For what it's worth - if you check the RL forum, people were getting
the '00 for ~$33K BRAND NEW. Taking into account depreciation (I would say
about $5K/year), the car is probably worth $23-$25K...
Hey, instead of buying this one, I will sell you mine - '96 w/ Premium...
And since the Explorers have been so succesfull..through thick and thin --- lets face it --- rollovers, bad tires , radio knobs fall off - l...o...l......Consumers, like the way they look - drive - and handle --- so, in my humble opinion - I feel they will do well, for a pretty long time..how much the new models will effect them ...I really can't say --- Just look a the Azteck -- isn't that special........l....o....l....
Terry.
You "should" be able to get a 2000 -maybe-...and a 1999 for sure.... -- If I remember right, you are close to the Butler auction....and I was there yesterday-- and I saw a bunch run through, this is a very good time for a purchase... because, they are plentiful...it's spring, ( I guess ) ..l...o...l... and a lot of folks forget the weather and move into convertibles ..vans..etc, you know the drill...
2000 XLT's 4x4 's were running around that $18,000 - $19,000 ish figure....and of course..the 1999 's were in that $16,000/$17,000 range....and this is your own back yard --- how's that ..for the - "up to minute market glance".......
Terry.
I mean, I think it's a possibility that they will tank.. They do have weakish residuals to begin with.
Figure a 30K mile 99 is worth $11Kish wholesale, means you ought to be able to buy one for $13Kish retail... Isnt that like $18-19K new?
That's a base car.
Bill
That and Sandstone Brown on an XC... ugh!
Bill
And I think someone on here is selling a nice Black one...
Bill
$7,500 is way too cheap, but then you did lowball them (If it was big time I *_MAY_* have done the same thing.. depends on the situation...)
$10K is a lot for that car, and if you were at just over invoice on an Avalon, then it's not like they have a lot of money on the table to play with.
Seems like a good deal to me. You could also try selling it to CarMax. They seem to pay a lot for cars too.
Bill
I'd say that fair is about $24K.. maybe to $25K if you love it.
As you know I do not like paintwork on luxury cars, but if it's touched up by scratchmaster or something it ought to be OK... (Those guys in the white vans who come out and do paint touch-up).
$29K wont get ya a 2000... but ya may be able to get a 99 for that quite easily IMHO.
Bill
I was at an auction yesterday....so this will give at least some guidelines --- The 1998 RL's that are clean..35k..nice cars, are running at the block right now, w/premium pack, are in and around that $22,000+ ish figure..the 1999's the same way are bouncing in and around that ..$27,000 ish figure .... --- so at least you have some Idea's
Just keep in mind --- they will pay a ship charge to get them to their destination -- $250..$300 for the Auction.. and just for the grins ...and the glory- just ad another $500 for cleaning, detailing, adjustments... to bring it to the front line.......
Well, I hope this helps...

Daewoo is an enormous conglomerate that is very crucial to Korea's economy. I seriously doubt they will fold. The Korean GOvt will preven that (A La The French GOvt with either Citroen and/or Renault).
Dont waste your $$ on that warranty!
Bill
Diiii -- Wooo's.. may not be my most favorite of vehicle's, but I'm sure they will do "ok" ... down the road --- and like Bill said.... they have their own Govt to intersede on all affairs ... just like George W.... ---Kidding ---

Leo - you're welcome to take a look http://www.qwalls.com, click on stuff for sale. It's located in the Columbus Ohio area.
Bill - I knew $29k was too much. :-) I just wanted to get a feel for how much too much. Also, they tried the scratchmaster - no dice. It looks like it was keyed, and the scratch was too deep. The Salesman was talking about having the door completely repainted.
Terry - I didn't know you were a buckeye, but I did know you were in Cleveland - until Easter, right? :-) The information does help.
Thanks again to both of you. I'm glad to see this forum is back in the top 10.

In MY opinion, it's a very nice car, full of features, and definitely one of the better USED values around (as can be confirmed by Bill or Terry). The only thing I don't like about it is the ride - too soft for my tastes. I think Acura tweaked the suspension in '99 (or so) to make the handling little better.
On the lighter side - since you and Terry live RELATIVELY close - why don't you ask him to buy one for you at the auction? Both of you will be happy
Just a thought
Goral - I test drove a '97 and a '98 RL. They made some minor suspension tweaks in '98. I was considering a '97 (same as the '96) since it looked the same as the '98, but it felt sloppy compared to the '98. The '99 is even less soft, and the 2002 even less from what I've heard.
Terry doesn't live near me, he's only visiting. :-) We exchanged a couple email messages, and I considered asking him to look for one for me, but since we just bought a new house, I really need to keep the car payment down, so I'll wait to see if I can find the right buyer for my Explorer. I don't want to finance more than $10k.
Bret - Thanks. Rich kid, rich parents, doesn't matter, just show me the money. :-)
Hmmmm, better get back on topic. Hey Terry and Bill, what is my wife's '96 Toyota Avalon XL with leather, roof, power everything, and 80k miles worth? :-) No need to answer, I really don't want to know. It's paid for, it should run forever, and she still likes it, so no biggie. :-)
Quentin
Here's a good question for you. You've both said that color affects value. Silver is good, brown is bad. Green was good, but is now bad. Purple is bad. What are the good colors. Are there any good dark colors? Maroon, Blue, Dark Gray, Black?
Thanks,
Quentin
Worst is I'm busy working or at the bar and I dont answer. My voice mail is screwy so call back. Terry, write that down!
I check my e-mail as often as I check my washer fluid. And seeing as how Collier Jaguar does it when they change my oil every 3K......
Hmm... Good dark colors... Generally Black cars are desireable, but in the northern climates. In the right car a Black car in FL can still bring all the money. Maroon is weak, Blue on the right car can also be good. It's the "goofy" sh... I mean stuff that people dont want. I dont see all those Yellow IS300s being too valuable down the road "Ugh, a YELLOW Lexus??!!" I can just see it...
Oh, and the 96 Avalon? Prolly somewhere in the nighborhood of about $7,500 or somewhere with a neighborhood of that is my initial (And Lazy-and-not-looking-it-up-just-glancing-at-the-black-book-guess) Thought...
Bill
Who still dislikes SUVs but that be a different story...
The new body style for Toyota...just, doesn't seem to be working ( I guess )..... The used Avalon's are very strong at the auctions...if you would have asked me that 6 months ago......I would have said something much different....
The nice, clean ones are pulling -- clean ..to xtra clean.. and sometimes a little more, depending on miles..... which brings me to your vehicle ----- it does have a lot of miles..that doesn't help....it's a XL, but with all the options..and that does help..and the shape of this vehicle-- tires, outside appearance etc,..well, you know the drill...But, Bill is right-- $7500 or maybe more, depending on these factors....but, they are nice vehicles...and they will run forever.....or... Clean it up..advertise it for $9950 --- and maybe get $9,000+....hey, on any given day..
Terry.
This is a totally regional thing, like Bill was saying..... If it's May..and it's 89+ degrees outside in Florida...and someone pulls up in a black, dark grey, blue vehicle ...as a rule... the vehicle, can be worth $1,000 or more...less money ---
It's a whole different story up north...dead winter - snow up to your eyeballs...and someone comes and buys a brand spankin' new black Benz..Towncar, BMW, Camaro.. whatever .....
At the auctions up here..it's a favored color...the dark colors, will pull a "little" more money ... the other day, at the Butler auction --- I was looking for a couple of Grand Marquis LS's... and it was a nice and sunny day, and a light blue was going through, and behind it- a candy red-- and they did just a little over average.. --- the same with the Z3's... now, the blacks..and the darker colors were doing a bunch more --- Go figure....
Terry.
Thanks,
Quentin
The $16,000 on the Quest, is all the money...and then some..--- Quests are a nice vehicle ...but, the dealer down the street that "showed" $19,500...was doing exactly that..showing you a huge over allowance.....1999 - GLE - Quests are doing just about $16,000 at the auctions..
It sounds like, you may want to deal with the guy ..the was upfront with you, from the very beginning....
Terry.
If this will help.... the Jeep you are looking at, is worth somewhere in the area of $14,000 + if it's a 4 door.... ( real money )
If, it's a nice car....the miles seem to be low...and of course --- got to have that black on black..going for it...they are running in and around that $22,000+ number...there was was 7 or 8 that ran yesterday ----
If you like this RL...and you feel comfortable about the vehicle...offer him like $24,000 ish and see what happens...
Terry.
I did some very basic research (I remember ya from the roadside cafe) And $16,500 seems to be the number o the car.
Terry's right. $14K is wholesale on that Jeep... so $16,995 seems like a pretty decent asking price (Of course you should try for less) But $16K oughta be fair retail.
If this store is being upfront with you, I'd do business with them. It's rewarding the sleazy types by doing business with them anyways that will perpetuate that kind of behavior...
Bill
I have seen probably 100, run through the block in the last 3 months..... and I can only tell you from experience.. --- what the true money is......... --- but hey....on any given day...
ps -- I have no Idea, what a snowmobile is worth.... but, I can tell you, what a 37' ft Formula SS is worth ...--- l....o....l.....
Terry.
The deal that I got, plus all the rebates, and the good monthly payment, basically makes it not worth the aggravation anymore. I did give it a valiant effort though, trying to sell my car.
Now I'm in a Maroon 2001 Camaro base coupe V6/A4 loaded plus the Performance Handling Pkg which hopefully I will enjoy for 4 - 6 years and then hope it will be easier to sell. The salespeople here tell me that they can't keep Camaros on the lot.
As a GM Supplier, I'm supposed to pay invoice plus 4% with no dealer fees. Well, they fell asleep at the wheel (a Bill Heard Store btw) and wrote me up a contract for INVOICE PRICE, which I quickly signed. Rebates were also up to $1500. Can't go wrong!!!!!!
I will have to look at some car dealers when I'm there....l.....o......l.....
Good luck..
Terry.
