Thanks Terry. The one that was "just like it" was a 2000 model (Mine is a 1999.5, whatever that means) and it had MORE miles on it. Only difference I could see on it was it had the Bose Sound system.
Now, I still think it was WAY overpriced, but you know how it is in the car buying business......we're all loooking for affirmation baby.....
"[..] it is a Camry LE 4 cylinder. No leather. No sunroof. Base wheels. 11,000 miles "
Just this once, I think the books have it sorta ok at $14... I'm *guessing* it should trade around that if it's clean and do easy $15s on the street... a new one like that can be bought for $17s here in MI but I think they're more dear down south... if you're not in GA, forget what I said.
The books are almost always too high, but they don't adjust enough for miles... in this case, it appears to kinda cancel out. -Mathias
Did the deal yesterday with the local Acura Dealer (I'm getting a 2004 TL). They offered $3,800 on my GTP which I accepted. You were right on the money - so to speak.
Thanks for your guidance on this. I felt much more comfortable about the numbers going into the deal based on your information. To me that is priceless. Thanks and apologies again for my, shall we say ' less than enthusiastic' attitude early on.
We all need wise-asses in our life to keep us from going NUTS!
I have a 1995 Honda Accord Ex. 2 door. It has 79,880 miles, leather interior, automatic, sliding sun roof, cd player, airbags, etc. I replaced the back brakes about 2 months ago and two tires. I've never had any mechanical problems. Now the catch. My vehicle has a dent in the right rear panel, a dent in the left door and bottom left panel by the door and a small dent in the hood. I would like to use this as a trade in for a new vehicle. The Kelley blue book for this car in its current fair condition is $4,000. Am I holding my breath? What is a reasonable price as a trade-in and does the cost of the car I am looking at leasing have any impact (about 42k)on what the dealer will be willing to give me to do the deal? Any help (or advice) on what to expect will be most appreciated.
Amen to that. This is the ONE time I'm VERY glad that truck has a tendency to break down. Made us see the old girl in a whole new light.
Its sounding more and more like Boomer (short for Boomerang, the truck's new name) will stay put with us. I could use a pickup truck and maybe keep some of the miles off my Explorer. We are at *gasp* 10,500 miles now.
just about last month you got that truck. I know Alaska is a big place and I'm REALLY hoping to visit there someday but man that's a lot of miles. I hate going to the gas pump. I'd have to figure out some way to reduce that... unless I was getting reimbursed.

I have been offered $9500 from the dealer but think he's a bit off. I am trying to retail for $13,000 but realistically would take $12,500. Should I take the deal without trade and take my chances selling the car? I have been able to retail my last two cars but am concerned about fronting the cash with no definitive sale. I have a nice deal on the table for a 2004 S60R and these units won't be around much longer other than existing ivnentory.
I know I'm way too nostalgic about my Jetta, but I wanted to get a fair assessment of what to expect when I trade it in for a new Jeep Liberty. It is:
91 VW Jetta 4-door GL 133,000 A/C sunroof major dent on passenger back door bumpy (dented) hood & doesn't close properly mechanical problems, but still runs
I'm getting closer to picking up a Burb in Seattle. Have found a source for Black Book data, and am going to use this when negotiating with used car dealer or broker. But the question is, should I buy now or say wait till the end of the summer? Can I expect a decent auction price drop in the next few months or are prices tied to new model year introductions?
As you might know, the s40 is not a car in high demand. Also, your car is going to compete with Volvo retail units with cpo warranties, so asking 13k and "settling" for 12.5k is not realistic. If you can bump your dealer to get you $10k, take advantage of your net tax savings, you should probably call it a day and enjoy the new R. Last time i checked, there was a quarter in the trunk in the R...this was about three months ago in CT. I am sure the program has changed, but there is probably still money back there. Good luck.
Jayson Williams was found Not Guilty on the 4 manslaughter charges .. he was found guilty on 2 of the conspiresy charges, he might see 300 days, maybe .....
Unbelievable, 4th gun charge in 10 years, he kills a guy and still walks away .. I'm just sick about it ..!!!! ... I guess if you want to kill people New Jersey is the place to go ..
...simply amazing, isn't it? I doubt he sees any jail time, it is amazing what some people can get away with when you have a little fame and a little $$$$$...
If your car were truely in fair condition, $4000 is a could, maybe see it if everything is going your way on the day you want to trade. Your car qualifies as rough condition, multiple body damage.
$4000 minus: 1. right rear panel repair, $700 if the dent can be fixed and repainted. 2. left door, $700 repair new door skin or dent repair plus paint. 3. Bottom left panel dent, assuming it can be fixed without paint $100, if it needs pulled out and repainted $400. 4. Small dent in the hood, hopefully it can be repaired by the paintless dent removal, $100.
As is, you could maybe see $2100-$2500. Don't hold your breath.
The car you are looking at has nothing to do with what your car is worth. They can show you anything on paper, but if they show more than it is really worth, it is just built in fudge factor on the selling price of the car.
Have you even gone around to the body shops and dent removal places to get estimates to see if the dents can be fixed "on the cheap?" If all the dents can be repaired without paint, I would say retail it out yourself after getting it fixed and cleaned up, asking around $5900 and send it home around $5000ish. Should be a relatively quick and painless sale, lots going for the car if it looks nice, leather, roof, good miles.
Too late to edit, so I deleted the earlier post. Had to add a few things to the description. Looking for trade-in and retail road numbers.
1996 Nissan 200SX SE 86,xxx miles Black over black cloth Automatic Sunroof Aftermarket CD Tires are okay Good mechanical shape, needs a good detail and some PDR. Located in St. Louis
wise, I agree with dkuhajda. Try to get some paintless dent removal done. They claim they can tap out dents up to the size of a football. I know that the body shop tapped out my Altima's door skin this way, and used no filler to repair it. The skin itself is absolutely perfect now, the paintwork they did is another story...
Terry, I know it's hard to believe, but I know a few honest lawyers. They all admit that if you go into a courtroom expecting justice, you're in the wrong place! Small consolation, I know, but I believe that eventually everybody reaps what they sow.
The Explorer will be 4 months old on May 6, I bought it new with 12 miles on it January 6, 2004.
Today my dog decided to puke all over the back seat, we just got done cleaning it, never knew how to take apart a car before now. Its clean, but dang, what a pain.
There was a horrific car accident a mile from my house on Wednesday afternoon. Guy in a rented 04 Explorer veered into the southbound lane right into the path of a tractor trailer, the poor trucker swerved into the northbound lane in an attempt to avoid him. At the last minute the guy in the Explorer corrected himself and they collided. Trucker was ok, but the guy in the Explorer didn't make it. My husband was one of the emergency personel that responded, he is still bothered by what he saw.
Anyway, they are trying to spin it so its the trucker's fault, I sure hope they don't, poor guy will lose everything just for trying to avoid an accident. Very tragic for all involved.
For about 6 months now, we have been looking for a small truck as the first vehicle for our teenage twin sons. We are having a very hard time finding ANYTHING worth buying in the $3,500-5,000 range, 8-10 years old. Our good friend who is a wholesale broker and has a '92, std cab, 4x4 Dakota that he will "sell" to us for $3K, price on the windshield on his buddys lot is $3,888. I looked at it this afternoon, it is staight,no rust, clean both inside and out with nearly new tires. It does have "high miles", but I'm not exactly sure what that means (forgot to check). The engine sounded good, my husband cannot check it out for mechanics and brakes until Sunday.
Does this sound like a fair and reasonable price? I've received great advice from here in the past, ANY constructive info would be greatly appreciated.
$3-$5000 good trucks are all over the place, where are you looking?
95 Dakota V8, Automatic, SLT loaded, 124K, $3100.
Word of warning, if you really are looking at high mileage trucks, certain 4X4s add a lot of repair cost and probably want to stay away. BTW the best buy in a small truck price wise is an Isuzu pickup, the S-10 clone. Bare bones 2000s with a/c, manual tranny, 60K miles, are going for $3900.
There are LOTS of repair issues with most trucks of that age. Do some research before buying. Dodge: paint problems pre 96, slip-o-matic transmission failures (due to poor maintenance mostly), intake manifold gasket failures, etc. and so on with almost every other brand.
Toyota also has its set of issues, mostly due to lack of proper owner maintenance.
We are in southwest Idaho. It is certainly not the center of the universe for access to a variety of quality used vehicles. Our broker friend is saying that the used market values are staying high and that he is having a hard time making a living. In the past couple of months he as been to (Manheim) auctions on both coasts and is seeing wholesale prices remain high. Does this sound right to you?
The Isuzu sound like a good option. However, for a female I DO notice makes and models of cars, probably better than my husband. (He would probably agree.) In the last 15 years, I can probably count on one hand the Isuzu (P ups) I've seen in town.
We are NOT LOOKING for high mileage pickups, just ones in our price range (3-5K) for a FIRST vehicle for our sons and that seems to be part of the criteria of what's available. We've pretty much given up on Toyota in that we simply cannot find any small truck worth buying let alone a Toyota and they generally go for a premium price regardless of condition.
I have owned 3 Dakotas personally. 87, 95, 97, of different flavors.
Be very wary of extremely high mileage at $3888. It darn better be an extended cab and 4X4 with like new paint if it has anywhere near 150K on it (common for the age), and mechanically very good condition. It probably has been repainted if the paint is not peeling off, very, very common for the year.
92's had lots of computer control/emissions related issues, usually due to weak battery. The ball joints would wear out around 120K, check for signs of any vibration on the highway or wandering when hitting bumps. Under light load the engine will knock was another common complaint, the intake manifold gasket would fail and oil would leak into the cylinders, $500 repair. Then the catalytic converters were just plain junk, check to see when it was replaced, if not it needs one. Automatic transmission problems, TCC solenoid would fail on models equipped with it, rear seals would fail, the cooling lines to the radiator fittings would come loose, all damaging the tranny. Timing chain slap on the 6 cylinder was common, new chain and tensioner. The big catch is that maintenance had to be performed on time and the special areas double checked. Missing a failure at the beginning would cost $$ to fix.
I must have liked the Dakota to have owned 3 of them. Careful and regular maintenance checks would prevent lots of the expensive issues, except for the catalytic converter and intake gasket.
...... I'm not knocking the lawyers, they did their job and did it well ..
The problem with a case like this is (besides that it took 3 months and millions of tax dollars) if your a celebrity with lots of $$ you can walk on just about anything, thats the sad part ..
Williams was stone cold guilty, it's not a secret, it's not imagined, he paid off the 2 million dollar "Civil suit" last year and the judge went blind on the criminal suit - so where is the justice there .?
......... A little 200SX action with 90k and we have the auto, slider and you say it's in good mechanical shape .....
These are still pretty popular, but they have to look and feel like 50k, no rust, no Jack the Ripper interior, no K-Mart collisions .. trade side, in and around the $1,500/$2,000 range depending on how it looks ...
Get that puppy detailed, bring any service up to date, do it right with a great Ad .. down Retail Rd $3,900 *asking* and with spring heading north you should see $3,0/$3,5 - folks have little fear of a 90k Nissan if it's been cared for ................
.......... Is the question: is $24,0 a fair *asking* price for a 02 IS300 with 34k and all the junk along with it .....
$23,900 is a fair *asking* price but be ready to grab $22,5/$23,5 if it comes at ya .. there only doing "in and around" the $20ish figure on trade and let's be honest, there not the most popular vehicles in that price range .....
....... I think what Dkuhajda is trying to say is .. 2wd drive pick-ups are going to be alot less money that 4wd's .. your risk level will also be less, because for what your trying to spend you will have to kick-up into the "high mileage" range to keep in the "low dollar" range ....
I know you are in Idaho, but see if you can snag a nice little Nissan or a Toyota pick-up with a nice history .. 90/100k on a Nissan is like 50k on a Dakota or a Ranger and whatever you do, no 4Banger domestics, V6's only .. unfortunately the imports own that 4banger market so thats were you need to be ....
** In the past couple of months he as been to (Manheim) auctions on both coasts and is seeing wholesale prices remain high. Does this sound right to you? **
There is 67 Manheim auctions, it's not going to the auctions thats important ~ it's knowing what auctions to go to .... if he is going to the Left Coast to buy vehicles, then he's in the WRONG direction - have him email me ....
....... This sounds like it could be a nice one ...
The miles are nice and low, lots of warranty left, right color, we have some sound action and he's only asking $29,900, thats cheap ... IF ~ it's a clean one, no "uh oh it's Maaco" then thats a heck of a good buy ..! .. he paid at least $27ish for it, so he's not going to retire on this deal ....
...... I would love to have a dozen of these .. it's an 02 LE with no miles ...
Trade side, in and around the mid $12's ... down Retail Rd, super big 5 liner Ad, great detail, $14,9 *asking* and it should fly for the first $13,9/$14,5 .. if it's clean, the loooow miles will sell it and it won't last long in the DC area ..................
.......... Mathias hit this one about dead on, like the one above, low miles but an 03 LE ..... trade side, you will see "around" the mid $14's ..
Down Retail Rd, get a great big stellar Ad, super detail, $16,900 *asking* and off it goes for $15,9/$16,5 .. that being said, even if you get super lucky and everything goes your way and get $16,5 for it, you still gonna be "flipped" $4,500 big ones ...... refinance this puppy, getting a big rebate and flopping into another vehicle will be the kiss of death, even "If" you could get a lender to do it ...............
........ Miles are low for the year, no leather and the color is a hard seller ...
$9,500 ..? .. sounds like the dealer is stepping up to the pump .. Volvo makes a great vehicle, but the S40 is not their claim to fame, and when the new one hit's the market that should be a winner (hopefully) ..
You can ask anything you want for it, but dealers are paying the high $11's, low low low low low low $12's for the "01's" with miles in the 20k range -and- every option and only seeing "around" the $13,5/$13,9 range on the retail side, these aren't barn burners .. if you go down Retail Rd for one like yours, it being a 00 and no leather, then you need to be ready for $11,0/$11,5ish and anything after that is a gift .....
........ Miles are a little stiff for the year .. if it has new rubber, no paint by numbers, no funny stuff in the ashtray .. then trade side, in and around the high $4's, "might" see the low low low $5's if someone gets real lucky and the dealer goes blind ............... ;-)
I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty Limited with 49k on it. It is Steel Blue with a good number of features.
I have 3 questions...
1) Does the dealer have the right to know up front how much I owe on it? 2) Trade in blue book is about $13,500. Is it reasonable to expect this? 3) I have never sold a car on my own in this price range. Are there any major drawbacks to selling it myself?
What kind of shape is it in ..? how deep are the sneakers .? .. is it a 2wd or 4wd ........?!? .. and what does the pay-off have to do with Real-World Trade-In Value of the vehicle ..?
...... Actually now would be a good time to grab a Burb, especially if it's a 4wd ....
But, now that you have a Black Book, what are you going to do with it, swat fly's ..?
Do you know how to read one, do you know what vehicles are truly reflective of the figures and which ones are below the figures and which ones are doing "out of the book ..?" .. I have my new Home Builder magazine, but I still can't figure out how to build a house .............
What kind of shape is it in ..? how deep are the sneakers .? .. is it a 2wd or 4wd ........?!? .. and what does the pay-off have to do with Real-World Trade-In Value of the vehicle ..?
It is in very good to excellent shape. Sorry, I don't know what sneakers are except the kind I use to play tennis in. It is 4WD, of course! Payoff have to do with RWTIV? You'd have to ask my dealer, because they are continually asking me what I owe on it, and I am leary to tell them...
Allow me to translate the wise one's words ( before his golf match:-).
1) Sneakers are tires ( i.e. how new are they or tread life left on them etc.) 2) What Terry is saying that what you owe and what it's worth are two mutually exclusive things. So you are right to be leery of them asking that before they give you an indication of what they'll give you for it in a trade.
P.S. Terry you are right, the JW verdict is very scary....
** It is 4WD, of course! ** .. how would I know.? .. a Limited can be a 2WD -or - 4WD ..
The reason why the dealer wants to know what your pay-off is .. because most folks owe a whole lot more on their vehicle than the real value of the vehicle - and since most folks are payment buyers, that can come back and haunt the potential buyer .. see thats probably the last thing that buyers think of, the pay-off, it should be the first thing .. so whats your pay-off.?
........ I watched 80% of that case, I either taped it or caught it first hand ..
Then this morning I listened to 5 of the 15 jurors, and they "didn't have a clue" of what *really* went on in that courtroom, thats because the judge had them out of the courtroom more times than he had them in there .. when the smoke clears, this judge should be disbarred ..! ..
It still stuns me, even all the folks and attorneys on Court TV are still shaking their heads .....
........ Miles are on the tall side and If it hasn't bounced off a few carts at K-Mart, we don't have that Swiss Army Knife look in the interior and all the service is 100% .. then trade side, in and around the high $13's, "might" - "maybe" see the low low low $14's if it's "Jam-up" and it needs -0- ....
So you do have some equity with a $12,500 pay-off .. if you send it down Retail Rd, you will need a great Ad, a super detail and the service records super-glued to the front seat, $16,900 *asking* and cut that dude loose at the first $15,5/$16,5, don't forget to park the ego in the garage, it's a Jeep Liberty, not a Lotus ..............
I am so glad that I came to this board to get some advice. I have decided to take the $6K and pay my Camry down and refinance it. Besides, as everyone pointed out I would have a car that I know its history and it is safer car and no extra maintenance fees. Thank you, thank you.
You said "The Honda is a pretty nice little vehicle for the $$ .. me personally, I would get the little stuff fixed .. "most" buyers have little knowledge on even who to call, let alone the brain damage they "think" they will incur, so don't give them a reason to pass, fix-it ... $3,900 *asking* and you should see $3,500, $3,300 on a quick sale, $3,0 if they have "instant immediate" CASH ........... "
I didn't get the little stuff fixed (but disclosed everything). I did get the front brakes done since I noticed the rotors were warped. Had a deal set to sell it to a friend for $3300, but a mutual friend of ours was in a tight spot and needed a car, so the first friend said he would back out since the 2nd friend needed a car more. Let the 2nd friend have it for $3000. As always, thanks for your help. My wife should have her new van (2003 Sienna LE) in less than two weeks, then I start shopping for me. :-) Seriously considering the 2005 Acura TL.

I must have liked the Dakota to have owned 3 of them. Careful and regular maintenance checks would prevent lots of the expensive issues, except for the catalytic converter and intake gasket.
Terry.
Terry.
$23,900 is a fair *asking* price but be ready to grab $22,5/$23,5 if it comes at ya .. there only doing "in and around" the $20ish figure on trade and let's be honest, there not the most popular vehicles in that price range .....
Terry.
Terry.
Good luck and let me know ...
Terry.
Trade side, in and around the mid $12's ... down Retail Rd, super big 5 liner Ad, great detail, $14,9 *asking* and it should fly for the first $13,9/$14,5 .. if it's clean, the loooow miles will sell it and it won't last long in the DC area ..................
Terry.

$9,500 ..? .. sounds like the dealer is stepping up to the pump ..
I hope this helps ..

Terry.
Terry.
THANKS!!!
1) Sneakers are tires ( i.e. how new are they or tread life left on them etc.)
2) What Terry is saying that what you owe and what it's worth are two mutually exclusive things. So you are right to be leery of them asking that before they give you an indication of what they'll give you for it in a trade.
P.S. Terry you are right, the JW verdict is very scary....
Duncan
** It is 4WD, of course!
Terry.
Tires are in very good shape. All were replaced ~ 9k miles ago.
I owe ~$12,500 on the Jeep.
and, if it matters, I got $940 off MSRP on the Pilot EX-L
Then this morning I listened to 5 of the 15 jurors, and they "didn't have a clue" of what *really* went on in that courtroom, thats because the judge had them out of the courtroom more times than he had them in there .. when the smoke clears, this judge should be disbarred ..! ..
It still stuns me, even all the folks and attorneys on Court TV are still shaking their heads .....
Terry.
Let me know how it goes.!
Terry.
