........ 7k with all the junk ..? .. there kinda floating all over the place right now - "hard money" would be around the $32/$33ish range, anything over that would put you on the last Greyhound bus out of Vegas ....

Thanks for the response! I appreciate it. I have to get $11,800 for it to get out from under my loan.

I have to get $11,800 out of it to get from under my loan. Man, I'm never going to get upside down on a car loan again.

These little dudes get ALL the money, especially when you say the words 4x4 and ecab ... $15,900 ..? .. low miles, V6, 4x4, TRD - even with the handshaker it's cheap money anywhere .... be there.

be there... in laymans terms, means sounds like a good as long as all checks out a-ok (ie - hasn't been wrecked, flooded, doesn't need a ton of work, is clean, etc...) As long as all thats good, wouldn't hesitate to buy, otherwise someone else will scoop up the deal and you'll be left holding.... thin air.
• steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
".. will be left holding thin air."
I respectfully disagree. He'll be holding $15,900.

I would also like to point out that the Tacoma is going to be redesigned within months and that in some areas of the country, there is some serious discounting going on.

Tacos, esp. 4x4s, are among the cars where I would look long and hard at buying a new one.... they hold their value extremely well, and sometimes only depreciate 15c/mile or so, depending on the model. Seeing as how those are the best and cheapest miles in the life of a vehicle, I'd check into buying a new one.

figure of speach... :) Mathias, you are technically correct that he'll have $15,9 (or no lien), but sounds like that truck won't be there at that price for long....

Hey, I'm not going to disagree with you on the strategy of buying a new one either, it may be a better option to step up to the plate and buy a lot of Yota's new (if one can afford to).... but someone's buying the used ones at a "premium" b/c for the most part, they don't seem to be distressed merchandise.....

Here are the details:

'02 Accord SE
4cyl, Auto, 32K miles, Silver
PW, PDL, CD/Cass, Power Slider, Power Mirrors
Air, Cruise, Tilt, Alloys, 1/3 tread left
2 years into 3 year lease(12K miles/yr)
Lease buyout right now is $14,900

'01 Tacoma PreRunner SR5 Double Cab (no TRD)
V6, Auto, 58K miles, Silver
PW, PDL, CD/Cass, Air, Tilt, (No Cruise)
Alloys, Power Mirrors
Running Boards, Spray In Liner, Bed Extender
Advertised internet price is $15980

My lease payments are $259/mo on the Accord. I'd like to trade it in and be OTD on the Tacoma at no more than $17K. Does this sound feasible? Should I be OTD for less? Should I wait until I'm closer to the lease end and shop for a Tacoma then? I really want to keep my payment close what it is now, hence the &17K ($278/mo for 72 mo @ 5.5%).

I'm in Raleigh, NC area.

Thanks for your input!

"hence the &17K ($278/mo for 72 mo @ 5.5%)."

maybe some financial advise, in my opinion, if you can't afford a car/truck at a maximum of 60 month term on the loan.... you're probably in too much car, maybe a little more than you can afford... if you can afford the 60 month payments, I wouldn't stretch it any further than you need.

... ** Price of 2001 Lincoln LS 5 speed & '96 Neon by hypersion May 17, 2004 (11:46 pm)
I interested in getting a 5 speed LS; I drove it at the dealer on Sunday. While I was a little (ok very) rusty at the stick I loved it. What do these go for? It stickered at $17,9.
Grey
V-6
45K miles
Auto
Leather
Good condition
It if certified by Lincoln/mercury for 75k miles or 6 years.
My current car is a '96 Dodge Neon coupe automatic with 103k miles it leaks oil, trans fluid, the A/C, Speedo & gas gauge doesn't work. It runs and paint & interior are in good condition but with all the problems will the Lincoln dealer give me anything for it on a trade in? My friend offered me $300. :) Thanks.

======================================

Grab the $300 and run like the wind, it's a 10 year old Leon coupe with leaky guts and 100k+ ~ whats it worth .?

The LS is actually a pretty nice driver .. this one is only the V6, *>Handshaker<* no slider, probably no Sport package and we have the leather with 45k .... dealer probably paid the the high $12's, maybe the low low $13's to make a deal, did a little service and added the CPO, so it probably hit's the table at the low $14's ........

$17,900 ..? .. he's not trying to kill anyone, but I have a funny feelin' that $15,5/$15,9 can find a new owner ... folks just don't wake up one day and say ~ gheez I gotta have a 5 speed Lincoln, so I'm sure the dealer wants to see the tail lights, like soon .......... :)

Let me know what the heck goes on.!

Terry.

PS: You wrote Auto - and 5 speed, this is based on a handshaker ...

What the Heck is it .....?!?

< and that in some areas of the country, there is some serious discounting going on. >

And where might that be? I've been looking for a couple months for a 98-00 Tacoma Xtracab Prerunner for under $10K for my son and here in Orlando I haven't found anything w/o high miles or needs work. I've seen trucks advertised in autotrader.com and on dealer lots that aren't selling, yet they won't budge, doesn't make sense to me. I've even had a guy looking at a local auto auction and the auction prices for a '99 Tacoma Xtracab Prerunner are 9-10.5K, told him I can do 9.5K at the auction, but so far no luck.
.
If you can show me an area of the country where this serious discounting going on, I'd even fly there, buy it, and drive it back.

........ I gotta agree with you .. whether they have a new model coming out with platinum headlights and 18k gold mirrors, it's not going to change the prices on these silly little critters ..

"I'm sure" someone-somewhere-someplace can find a new one for invoice, but while thats all going on ~ the used one 50ft away from it will get ALL the money ... and don't ask me why ...... :)

Thanks for the estimate, Terry.

I still can't figure out what everyone else does with their cars to only accumulate...what's considered average? 12000? miles a year. Mostly sit and admire it in the garage? It is a good year when I don't put 30000 miles on a car, and it is not like I am a traveling salesman or something... What is the point of owning a great family car like the XC90 if we are then going to rent another vehicle every time we go on one of those day-long road trips? Then again, my wife accumulates almost as many miles on her car as I do on mine, just taking the kids back and forth to school twice a day (their school is about 25 miles from home) and running errands.

S2000 Trade in by habitat1 May 18, 2004 (7:10 am)
I've been offered $22,000 on a 2002 Honda S2000 18k miles, mint condition. I'd be getting a TL 6-speed with Navigation at $1,000 over invoice, a very good deal by my research. The trade deal came after the TL negotiation.

======================================

02 S2000 with 18k - $22,000 ..?

You did super good on that super little dude, Spring has Sprung and someone jumped all over it, can't blame em' for that, it will sell a lot faster than a 6-speed TL in a few years .l.o.l.........

In Lansing, MI, home of Oldsmobile (RIP).

Run-of-the-mill yotas sell for invoice-rebate in this area, please don't shoot me.

$1,500 on Tacomas (excludes Double Cab) per advertisement.

I didn't say, buy a new one, I said, check into it. Used Tacos bring ugly money, that doesn't mean you HAVE to buy them.

....... Hey, not knocking the miles - as long as folks know with "eyes wide open" that high milers are not the vehicle the *Broad* market will be lookin' for in 2/3 years, thats why you pay for it ..

I love the XC90's .. bought a few, sold a few, put almost 3,500 miles on the last one ...

** their school is about 25 miles from home **

.. 25 miles away ..?!?

Might that be Reform school.? ........ :)

"maybe some financial advise, in my opinion, if you can't afford a car/truck at a maximum of 60 month term on the loan..."

I thought the same thing, but for this vehicle I plan on keeping it a long while.

The interest(@5.5%) on $17K over 72 months is $2997. Over 60 months it's $2483. Payment is $278 vs $325. So for ~$500 I can be in a vehicle I can afford now. This to me makes sense, given that I plan on long term ownership. If I were only planning on short term then I'd be more inclined to only go 60mos.

Plus, interest rates are on the rise right now. Who knows what will happen if I wait until I can afford the payment on a 60 month loan.

If only I could find those misplaced money tree seeds.

Mercedes 2000 C43 AMG Trade In Value by andre1 May 18, 2004 (2:43 pm)
Looking to trade in a Mercedes 2000 C43 AMG and I'm getting values all over the map. Which value can I expect to get?
Southeast Location (North Carolina)
49,000 miles
StarMark vehicle (MB extended warranty)- 5 years 100,000 miles
Silver
4 door
Automatic (Manu-matic)
Only option - CD Changer
Excellent condition (non-smoker)
KBB Trade In - $24,000
NADA Trade In - $28,000
Edmunds Trade In - $30,000

Thanks.

==============================================

In the Raleigh-Durham area .. 50k, right color anywhere, if the paint glows in the dark, no-repaints, no Jack the Ripper interior, service is 110%, we are knee deep in rubber and no curb attacks on the wheels .. then trade side, in and around the $23/$24 zipcode, "might" "maybe" get a dealer to hang in there for $25 and reuse the Star Trek warranty if it's a "baby doll" and it's needs less than -0- .. if it needs stuff, start deducting ..

$30,0 ....?!??? I'm sure thats a missprint, right ...? that's a retail figure ..

It's a stick; I don't know why I wrote auto? I'll go in on Memorial Day weekend; last day of the month and see if I can get a good deal. Should I have a third party mechanic check the car out or should I trust the CPO completely? Thanks for your help.

Terry, if you remember last Monday you advised me to drop the asking price for the car to 9900 and let it go for 9500. That day I did just that on cars.com and the autotrader.com. Last week I had four calls, nothing serious. On Tuesday a young girl emailed me, and on Wednesday she bought the car for 9750. I have also placed an ad in the Washington Post for four days starting yesterday. Got four calls yesterday, one idiot called me at 11:30 PM. I am not looking forward to this weekend. I will probably get flooded with calls. In the future I will just place an ad in the paper and not bother with online ads.

Overall I made net profit (after detailing and advertising) of about 900 over the 8500 that Carmax has offered me. It is almost not worth it to bother with selling the car myself.

What I don’t understand is why are there so many people who are willing to pay 10K for a 5 year old Accord w/ 57K on the clock when they can get a new Corolla for under 13. Not that I am complaining or anything. :)

Thank you, Terry

I know I've asked a lot, and I appreciate the info, but I found yet another candidate on a local new car lot:

1999 Olds Intrigue GLS
23500 miles (checked Csrfax...usage was 3-6K per year)
No sale green, tan leather guts
No slider
CD/Cassette + 12 disc changer in trunk

Trunk...brings me to a bad point. I smelled a horrible mildew smell. After test drive (man those things drive well), I pulled up the cover over the spare tire and there were puddles of water. Tire changing instructions look like they were wet at one time or another, too.

They are asking $11,0

I'm thinking waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy less....$8,0 or so.

What say you, oh wise ones?

Car is in Columbia, SC.

Terry,

With all the talk about Lexus from Jacksonville a month or so ago, I have one to run by you. A dealer/broker friend of mine picked this one up at Ocoee last week and I want to see how his price is because my better half is very interested. here goes:

2001 Lexus RX300 2wd
champagne over tan leather
40,600 miles
slider, 6 cd changer, side air bags, memory driver's seat, wood steering wheel (which makes it have the premium package, right?)
VSC
In service date appears to be 11/01, giving it a few months of warranty still
It is a lease return that was leased at the (really, really big) Lexus dealer in Broward County, Florida

I'm in Brunswick, Georgia (halfway between Savannah and Jacksonville)
He's asking $24,450, and from what I can tell he owns it, including transport, for around $22,850.

I am debating selling/trading my car and keeping the wife's for me. I know this is going to be really ugly, but I'm at the point I just want to be rid of my car for ANYTHING else. Here we go:

1999 Audi A6 Avant (wagon)
2.8 30V V6, 5 sp Tiptronic Auto, Quattro (the only way the wagons come)
Silver over Ebony leather
Loaded with everything but the warm weather pack, including:
front and rear side air bags,
front and rear heated seats,
slider, Bose stereo with cassette and 6 CD changer,
Xenon headlights with washers,
dual auto climate
no third seat
It is in decent shape, but has some scratches on the top of the rear bumper from loading and unloading things.
I'm going to have pulled a 2" dent in the tailgate where some elderly man in his brand new 2004 Town Car hit me in the parking lot
Now, for the ugly: 110,600 miles.
Also in Brunswick, GA
I know it'll be bad, but how bad does the master say?

Thank you as always!
Sean

+ ex...pie-in-the-sky, only 70k clicks.

- 12 year old, a few nicks, paint-by #, in the big apple.

im thinking easily $1500-$1700. well oiled and spit-shined, with no leaks or funny noises, you might bring $2100-$2200.

private party, there are TONS of mommies and daddies looking for a car just like yours for the newly-licensed teenie bopper. an ad in the paper or ebay should have it sold in the $4500-$5000 range within a week or 2.
• dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
I'll give it a go since we see more of the lower price undesirable auction vehicles.

Retail side, around $4,000 is pretty much the best you can expect. Ask around $4,500. Retail is the way to go. Bring ALL the maintenance up to date, tires, battery, belts, fluids, and a mechanical inspection. Vacation season is coming up, so advertise it as ready to drive and fully inspected (make sure you have the inspection report on the seat).

Trade side about 1/2 the retail side, $2000-$2500. Might, maybe see high $2K's on a push if it is perfect in every way and needs nothing for dealer resale.

As a rule you will usually get a better response when you go with a Big paper in the area .. you have to be very *patient* with online buyers ~~ "Hey, I can offer you $6,500 -CASH- for that 01 Acura 4dr Integra LS" .. sometimes you feel like yanking their lungs out, but it's hard to get your fingers thru those tiny little wires .l.o.l....

** Overall I made net profit (after detailing and advertising) of about 900 over the 8500 that Carmax has offered me. It is almost not worth it to bother with selling the car myself **

$900 ...? .. hey stud boy, that's alot of money .. for $900 I would probably chop-up my neighbor and bury him in the backyard .. if he doesn't get that yapping dog fixed pronto, I will be doing it for free .l.o.l.....

Thanks for the Update, I appreciate it ........... :)

Last Request (Honest) MB C280 by chadwick32 May 19, 2004 (12:41 pm)
In case anybody is keeping track this is my third request for Terry and co. but its hard work buying a car if you want a good deal so I'm still at it!!

96 Mercedes C280 sedan
61k miles
Desert Silver
Beige leather (the real stuff)
Starmark certified and fully serviced through 60K
Sunroof
New tires
Small ding in rear but hardly noticeable
local trade in I'm told
Ohio market

Thanks again.

=======================================

Man ~ your like a fat lady in a dress shop .. lotsa stuff to try on, but your don't fit into anything.!

What happened to that nice Infiniti that you were looking at.?

Anyway, we are now off looking at a 96 C280 with 61k, sand and tan, Star Wars warranty, got a little slider action and new sneakers .... Buckeye dealer might have the ultra high $6's low $7's in it, he has to service and drop the CPO in there so it probably hits the table at the low to mid $8's, I'm thinkin' $9,9/$10,5 .... whats he asking ..?

thanks guys for your responses to my question, i know that the new model will be coming out soon, but at 18 yrs old i cannot afford a new vehicle.
i love toyota's 4x4 trucks and im just looking for a great dependable truck, as i will be going to college and working part time.

i'm looking for that truck right now and dont plan on rushing to buy the first good deal i see. if u have anymore helpful tips for a first time buyer let me know.
(since a whole new design is coming out for these trucks, do u think i can use this to get the price down for a used one?)

"(since a whole new design is coming out for these trucks, do u think i can use this to get the price down for a used one?)"

Fat Chance. NEW trucks, yes. USED, no.

There appears to have been a little bit of a misunderstanding regarding "discounting" of Tacomas as the new models get closer.

The fact is, Toyotas hold their value, trucks hold their value, 4x4s hold their value. So guess what it's like to buy a used Toyota Tacoma 4x4....??? Anyone?

These are stout little vehicles, they are remarkably unrefined and not all that pleasant to drive, but there's no doubt they're built to run at Armageddon. And people are willing to pay for that.

The trouble with Terry is that he's a car dealer. He buys today and sells next week, and he knows the market like a supercomputer, except that a supercomputer sometimes is down for maintenance, and Terry don't need that. A couple months back he wrote about a Tacoma doublecab 4x4 he bought and he said, to paraphrase, "you wouldn't believe what I paid for it... but I had it sold the next day to a Toyota dealer.... on a phone call."
I don't doubt it for a second.

But you're buying for keeps, and that makes it different. I submit to you that if you cannot afford a new Tacoma, you cannot afford a used one. The depreciation curve for all cars is going to one point: 0$ after 10 or 15 or 20 years. And a 5-year-old truck for $16 is a worse deal than a new one for $22. 'Cuz 5 years down the road, when it's finally paid off, it's what? And old truck, maybe starting to rust and to leak, and you paid $16k for it. Better to buy the new one for $22, and have it be worth $15+ on the street in 2009. Better yet to spend the $16 on a NEW Matrix with 8" of ground clearance, fwd, 30+ mpg and a ton of room inside.

See my profile on a lengthy and laborious treatise on the subject of driving cheaply.

To reiterate: NOBODY is discouting used Tacomas because the new one is coming out. The dealers don't have to, people will pay big money for them.

Long-windedly yours,
-Mathias

*****Hey don't start those rumors, I don't smoke cigars*****

Ok, Ok, well, I would be low on gas running to the store to keep the cigarette supply up.

We drove to Anchorage yesterday and back, that was a very nice trip. Explorer averaged 19.6 mpg. No sense in buying a small car, the savings just aren't there.

Glad I waited and thought hard about it.......not to mention getting the reality checks in here. I will STAY AWAY FROM THE CAR LOTS........and the bike shop (ouch).

Damn, only $900 for a neighbor? How much is to for a mother-in-law? Do I get a sympathy discount? Actually my mother-in-law is a treasure, that has to be buried in the backyard…lol Maybe I should send her to Florida, it is “God’s waiting room” after all.

Oops, my wife is coming, bye.

Tempted by all the amazing MFs on those 04 Odysseys right now.

We got into an 03 at the height of the mania in December 2002 (full Monroney less $500, 3.9% financing) and then some SOB went and customized the left side doors one afternoon last week while it was parked at the curb. Guess he miscalculated a Uey and might have had a cocktail or three...? No witnesses. Didn't even leave skid marks, much less a note. It's being professionally repaired as we speak to the tune of $2500, $500 of which is mine. All cosmetic, nothing structural. So, how bad would we get hurt getting out right now and into one of those giveaway leases?

Los Angle-leez area
2003 Honda Odyssey EX-L DVD RES
Silver hide, gray leather innards
Low low 7500 on the clock, dealer maintained
All the goodies--twin power sliders, roof rack, DVD, CD, keyless entry, auto, air
Exterior WAS perfect $%@#*! until--you know--
Interior with a little beach sand, hardly any french fries, minor scuffs on the plastic behind 3rd row seats, mostly protected by the trunk tray and good floor mats

What say you o wise one? Trade, retail? I suspect I'm not gonna like it...probably just keep it 10 years and move up to a 2013 model...

...... Nothing like a little "hit and run" to start your day ...

Nowadays $2,500 isn't a whole lot of money as far as repair costs go, I remember back in the olde' days when you could have 3 Vettes stripped pealed, sanded and shot in day-glo paint and win a Car Show, now it's $2,500 just to shoot left side doors ..

It's going to depend on what kind of job it is - the finished product, if there is any overspray, orange peel, the guy next door was sanding his 34ft Motorhome and all that junk went airborne ... if it looks and feels right I'm guessing the $21/$22ish zipcode, it might make it towards $23, it's hard to say without me lookin' at it, but thank goodness it doesn't have 35k .. here is a link that Mathias stores in his vault for what to look for:

trade-in value 96 Audi A4 Quattro by edgriebel May 20, 2004 (12:06 am)
Terry-
I'm hoping you could give me an idea of trade-in value. A local used car-only dealer offered me 6k on trade for 03 Taurus SES w/20k, Taurus price was 11k. My guess is they were bumping up my trade, and bumping up the Taurus in kind. Around here, 10,9 to 12,9 for 03 non-duratec SES w/ 15k-30k mi. Wondering how much the defects noted below will hurt the value, should I take whatever I can get?
Audi Details:
96 Audi A4 Quattro V6 5-speed Automatic (tiptronic not avail in 96)
87k miles
Red ext., Black int. "pleather" (option between cloth and leather)
Sunroof
Heated seats (work), ski bag
Never wrecked/no accidents
New tires in Aug 03
New front and rear brakes in 03
New timing belt, serpentine belt, water pump 02
All interior electronics + A/C work
Lightly keyed length of passenger door, 1" z-shaped scratch
Driver's seat has 6" crack in vinyl, cloth underneath intact, otherwise interior perfect
Slight seepage from rear diff and tranny rear seal
Except for key & scratch, body & paint excellent shape, would show/auction well
Located Rochester NY

===========================================

The miles aren't bad for the year, we got that auto shifty thing going on, sounds like a typical 87k vehicle, a leak here a rip/scratch there, service is pretty current and the color is good .. trade side, your probably lookin' at the low $4ish figure, maybe on a really good day the high $4ish figure and if everything goes your way and you haven't been missing Church and your subscription for Vogue magazine is paid 3 years in advance, you could "might" maybe see $5,0 .... $6,0 ..? .. maybe on the planet Jupiter.

Your looking at a 03 Taurus SES, the lower the miles the higher the price, besides, whats the options.? .. if it's a 15k leather Duratec with a slider and all the stuff then they probably paid in and around the $11's for it, so figure $12,900 their side ....

Let's put all the smoke and mirrors away here .. you should be able to trade for your vehicle and "around" $8,000ish -- notice it says: "around" ...

Good luck and let me know..!

Terry.

...... Good description - thanks ....

GLS 4dr, 3rd seat, miles are high and the tires are weak .. if it looks and feels like 50k, no hits no runs no errors, no KFC sliding around the back seat and no repaints .. then trade side, in and around the high $3's, maybe the low low low low $4's .. if it needs stuff start deducting ~ I think it needs a few things so start now ............... ;^)

Hello Terry:

Looking to trade in the above-referenced Accord. It's fully loaded and has 38,000 miles. It's white with tan leather interior. The car has been garaged and is free of any dents, scratches, etc. It really is in exceptional shape with low miles. Should I trade in or attempt to sell it myself? What would trade in value be vs. selling it outright?
• 03oddity03oddity Member Posts: 60
Thanks for the info. $21-23 for a low low mileage 03 Ody with the goodies, eh? I'm guessing those are trade #s....any thought as to private party retail??

Now that Gov. Schwarzenegger's got $2400 sales tax and Honda Finance has got close to 10 big ones out of me in a year and a half for now damaged goods, it reminds me why I should ALWAYS LEASE!! Duh...what was I thinking??

Good money after bad for 43 more payments, then keep it till the wheels fall off, or cut and run? Hmmm...
