What book? Please say it wasn't VMR. They're pretty good on antique cars... but some to most of their Modern values tend to be a joke. From where I sit, overall, Edmunds is becoming the most accurate (Good job JH if yer reading this).
I'm not sure where they are priced at new, But knowing Toyotas they ought to have strong resale. Corollas always have done well, and Tercels always did pretty well. The weakest Toyotas always seemed to be Celicas if I remember...
The pricing on them seems to be all over the place, but it looks like $9K or so seems like a ballpark figure on what they're selling for wholesale with 20-25K on them or so. Puts retail at about $11-12K or so IMO.
The real high numbers seem to mostly pop up in California.
Does this kosher with what you're seeing?
Bill
So you are saying that trade in value would be about 9k on a 2000 Echo with between 20 and 25 thousand miles?
I was thinking my source (for retail price) was a little high on the mileage, but if you figure that a 2000 model might have originally gone on sale in 1999, this would make it a 2 year old car so I guess the mileage is reasonable.
Its' a Jersey/NYC thing
lol
I generally liken KBB retail to MSRP+ADM+$300 Tape Pinstripes+Undercoating on a new car.
20-25K is higher than I'd like to buy a 2000 at.. but its', in reality, not uncommon at all.
Bill
I might be a Saab-drivin' dork but XK8's are the hot ticket for the single dude.
IMHO, this is where you ought to be able to buy a lower mileage 99 or 98.
But that's also in AK.
ES300s are outstanding cars, just look for service records and makle sure the LCD DIsplays on the radio and AC work.
Bill
But, you are in a market that is totally different from the norm --
State side, you would probably pay in or around $20,000 or less --- But, your in Alaska. I know you two have been lookin' for a while for different vehicles, and if this is one you truly feel comfortable with --- then go for it. The one thing that's always hard to find is ..low miles and nice clean vehicles. Combine the two, and it raises the price... that's just the flea's the come with the dog.
When I go to the auctions, I always look for nice, clean low mileage vehicle's ..and I pay the xtra $500/$1000/$1,500 that it takes to purchase them..
So, things are kinda the same ..but in different area's ...So, start at $19,000 and see how far you can go
Maybe this help's ..
Terry.
btw...you were kind to our Echo friend, Im thinking eighty five bucks is all the macaroni for this rolling shoe box on its side with a slightly heavy clock.
White, BBS wheels, wood steering wheel, ventilated seats, On-Star, and all standard opt.?
Any long ternm ownership comments appreciated : ie
are these costly to maintain for 10 years?
Thanks in advance!
Price wise I am going to try to stay cheap, hubby has decided to order a Harley this summer so that means that my car needs to be paid off by the time the Harley arrives next summer. No big deal, there are times I don't mind driving a high mileage car. He will reward me in the end with a brand new whatever I want. So, that said, I am guessing I will be looking for a high mileage 94 or 95 ES300. Either that or I will totally go off the deep end and buy a Ford Escort......lol.
Then again, I might decide on something different next week, but I doubt it, I have always wanted a Lexus. I still have plenty of time, there is a good side to not being in a hurry, I can buy what I want.
A lady at work is thinking about selling her 1997 BMW Z3 roadster. Any ideas on what it'd be worth?
It's a 2.8 V-6, pale silverish-blue, manual. No C/D player. Leather (but I guess that's standard). It has about 45,000 miles on it, and she lives in Maryland.
If she tries to put it in the paper and sell it, any ideas on what a fair price would be?
Thanks!
-Andre
Where is it at? Auto or Manual?
Thanks!
Bill
$18Kish wholesale sounds in the ballpark to me... I think it's a $21,900 retail car.
Terry?
Bill
Thanks again!
Hmm.... I haven't see results for one with that may miles on it running...
My guess, well...Put it this way, if it had 12K or so I'd say wholesale $27K, retail $30K or so.
So... $24-25K wholesale, $27-28K retail seems fair to me.
Bill
It would give you a chance to see how you liked the car with a less than 2 year commitment remaining on the lease--if all goes well, buy it out; if not, walk away.
I need to move quickly so I don't lose this other deal if the lease does not work out.
Again, thanks!

99 Crown Vic LX
36,000
Gold, Leather, power seats, handling package, electronic instruments, air suspension - pretty much all the goodies.
New tires.
Flawless interior and exterior.
They are in Florida.
Thanks in advance.
I checked the link...300hp? WOW.
Little more than I need and the buyout is the same as the current purchase on this one (although mine has more mileage and 70 less hp).
Cool car though :-)
A gold Crown Vic in Florida! I havent seen one of them in seconds! ;-)
Good color, miles dont help it tho....
I'm thinking about $12,500 or so if its' clean.
Bill
I'm not suprised you see those all the time although I thought the Grand Marquis (same difference) was FL's number 1 car. My MIL says there are so many of them at the mall, they have to use the panic alarm to find the car.
The 36K is from being new in Fall of 98 and summers in New England and 2 winter trips out west.
36K isn't high, when I looked at Auction results.. I saw one with 108K on it! Ouch! Course it also sold for under $7K IIRC. I've always said that if you drive a lot, that it's better to buy towards the end of the model year, Not only do you get lots of incentives, but if you drive 30K a year, you can trade every 2 years and not get punished.
Now, if it was Black/Black, definetly New England.

Bought a new truck from them ONCE and brought it in for warranty work ONCE. Definitely underhanded dealings. Everybody I ever talk to about them has only dealt with them ONCE. (kinda makes you wonder how he got so huge)
'11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S
I'd never work for him, much less buy a car there. It's the scum like that that gives us a bad name.
Bill
Hope thishelps
Bill
The KBB shows a wholesale of 11865 on it. I calculate that being a diff of over 2300. Is this normal for Jeeps? If so, I know what I'm NOT buying in the future.
Rich
Lotta factors. Reliability, Current Market conditions, It's a 2WD 6Cyl, (No V8)...etc..
Most domestics have terrible resale value to be truthful. The new Jeeps have huge incentives, which whacks the resale values of the older ones down even harder still.
Plus there's the new body style..etc..
$11,865? Ouch. I dunno where they got that number from, but I plugged your Jeep into a program I have called Manheim Market report. It shows me what cars sell for at auction. However, its' for dealers who subscribe to their online service.
The only Jeeps like yours that are selling for $11,500-12K or so are ones with VERY low mileage. Like.. It'd have to have under 30K and Leather, Moonroof..etc. Oh, and 4WD.
Personally, I can't stand kbb.com I mean, they aren't helping anyone out IMO. Not helping us out, because customers get the info, its' incorrect and costs us deals or makes our job that much more difficult.
Doesnt help consumers out because the values are off and their retail values are outrageous.
That being said, if you got "hit" at $6K... Ugh. FInd a different dealer. What car is it that you're considering?
Bill
Buy a Hyundai Sonata or Cadillac Catera and see what happens!
That's really not bad when you think of it. Wholesale $16K, retail $18,500 ($1300 off MSRP) and I doubt they sell for MSRP (They may in AK).
Have you considered selling yourself? You ought to get $18K for it. I mean, if that used car dealer hit it at $16K.. What's he gonna sell it for? $18,500 at least is my guess.
Bill
To me, few new cars make a lot of sense to buy new. VWs are among them actually.
Bill
I might go back and use the 9500 number in negotiations and see where it gets me. I was looking at a Sequoia and we were actually pretty close on it's price.
Well, I've gotten a little education on this aspect of it so it's back to the table I guess!!
Seems really low to me. Unless they were at Invoice on the Sequoia and it was an underallowance or something.
I'd say you ought to be able todo $1,500-1,800 or so over actual invoice on the Sequoia versus $9,500 on your trade.
Still, I'd consider doing some shopping around a bit. Also, if they try sleazeball tactics.. walk. Buying from a store that does that only reinforces that garbage.
Bill
bravocharlie, I noticed you listed some of the improvements you've performed to your JGC. I'm not a dealer, but I've spoken to enough of them to know that things like that can, if anything, hurt your resale value. A dealer can correct me if I'm wrong...

Thanks,

Stereos add zip. They can hurt if its' a huge system with a rack of 12"s tho.
Oversized tires... I dunno. I don't seethem hurting it. They don't help. Now a set of 33" Mickey Thompsons will scare me a bit. Tint is nice, adds zip, but wont hurt it in hot LA.
Bill
That's the car that will give Nissan Used car Managers nightmares...
I'd say no.
Bill
We bought my hubby's GMC used 18 months ago for $20,995.....not bad for a truck that was only 3 years old and was low miles. I imagine the original sticker was close to $35K since its a loaded up diesel 4X4.
Clean 2000 LX's, leather and all the stuff with 10/12K are doing in the -mid-$15's..there is a bunch around, it looks like the show -Cops, at the auctions...l....o...l...
Z3's -- I would think high $17,000's right now -- If, I remember these folks, they are a close to DC..so they might pay a little more --- that's what happens when you live too close to George W. l..o..l..
Alaska -- Don't get shy with the Jetta, they do all the money at the auctions -- sometimes, if they have all the toy's and no miles ..you better get ready to through the book away..
SUV's -- The Exploders and Grand Cherokees are a little on the soft side right now -- along with the rest. It's summer and people do get that "short term memory loss" like I had mentioned back in march.april-- the "hot" SUV for the summer "seems" to be the Ford Escape. I just paid $21,000 for a 2001, slider, leather, tow pack, wheels, 4,400 miles etc etc ... I will see how they do today at the Ford Sale ------
Terry.
