Once I decide whether or not to sell it, I may go that route. These things have a relatively small but avid market. Don't see too many on eBay, but have seen a few west coast offerings on AutoTrader.

    Thanks for your info, folks!

Contemplating replacing our X5 with something more trucklike...

    Denver, CO
    2005 BMW X5 4.4 V8 AWD
    57K miles
    Black with Tan interior

Sport, Premium, Cold Weather packages, shades/rear heated seats, Sirius, Bluetooth, Premium sound with DSP, Tow Package, pano roof, xenons, etc... Basically everything but nav.

Great condition, no dings, brand new tires and brakes -- pads and rotors (<3,000 miles on both), front bushings/control arms replaced, have maintenance records. Needs nothing, all common issues addressed and corrected.

    No paint work/accidents, freshly polished/waxed.

Drives great, averaged about 19mpg over 20K miles.

    Thanks in advance!

Well...all those things checked out just fine.

Very smooth going into reverse and when driving in reverse...no odd noises or vibrations when the car is shifting/down shifting...no whining.

It has BF Goodrich tires on it (would not be my choice)...but the ride is smooth and controlled.

The climate control works great...seems to have a little bit of a dull "ticking" sound occasionally. Funny, my buddies MDX makes a similar sound...heard it the other day when we went out to lunch.

All cars and trucks have the ticking sound. It's the countdown to the crusher.

    burgundy
    alloy, sun roof
good tires, brakes, 2 more year of factory warranty
car has clean title and drives good and straight, but carfax shows side impact accident on driver side, bought from used car dealer so i don't know the whole story, repaint job is good match perfectly..........however, under detailed inspection you can see it has been fixed by looking at the fit and finish (the are wider gaps between clad moldings and sheet metal, etc.) and, now the car has been under the sun, the clad moldings on driver side (on fender, 2 doors, and rear wheel well) have faded to a lighter gray color compared to the front and rear bumpers (maybe they used aftermarket parts?)

i am trying to trade in at the dealer for a new vehicle, TMV trade-in is $10552, i would like to know the trade in value for this SUV with an accident, as supposed to one that's never in an accident, how much less i get on this one?

    thanks kindly

proverbial little old lady car. On Long Island, NY.

Just under 50K on the clock. Overall clean, and well maintained, but does need tires.

I believe it is that beigy color that was common at that point.

    Normal stuff (roof, etc.).

How much on the trade? And hopefully the miles save it!

Is this car considered a classic? It has a corvette engine and everything else is original.

What firebird is considered a classic if any?

Where can a person find out this type of information easily?

    What could it be worth?

    Thanks

Stick it on craigslist with some clear pics - you'll do far better than on a trade-in (2 grand or better more). If you have the time, you might do even better on ebay.

Folks go nuts for low miles. Low mileage older Lexus cars are virtually impossible to find.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
The market for these is not real strong except for the ones with the 3.8 turbo motor. The first and second generation cars (through '81) bring some money though.

What it's worth depends wholly on it's condition. Follow third generation cars (1982 - 1991) on ebay for awhile and you will be able to determine its value with high accuracy. It would also be worthwhile to spend some time on Firebird websites.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
Not mine. I am helping a distant relative sell it, and she isn't doing the Craigs thing.

So, if it doesn't get traded, it might get complicated!

Did anyone know of a RWTIV on the 07 MCS? Was hoping to run by a Carmax this evening but didn't want to come unprepared! :)
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Looks like about a $17,000 car to me.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Unmolested you are closer to $10,000 than $10,500.

If the repair is as noticeable as you say AND you have a bad Carfax I'd say the you'll lose another $2,000 maybe $3000
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Hemmings is the guide for classic cars. Although, I doubt that an 89 Firebird qualifies.

Last real collectible Firebirds were the 80-81 Turbo's.
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
Still technically not a classic because it is not 25 years old yet but one of 1,100 or so Indy 500 edition 20th anniversary 1989 Turbo Trans Ams would be a collectible if not yet a classic. They had the Buick Grand National turbo V6s in them.

    Thanks Volvo.

Guess Ill stop by Carmax tonight and see what I can get. Kind of bummed its only about $17,000
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
No matter the miles, it's still a 10 yr old car. Dealers either don't want those cars or want to steal them.

Trade in its a $4-5,000 car. Craigslist could see $8000

1 month old, drives like ****. Worst car ever.

Dealer says about a 20% hit, somewhat less if I trade it in for yet another **** BMW...right, that's a good idea.

So if I trade in my $40,000+ BMW can I go financially sideways on a used RX? I shoulda coulda waited and gotten an RX right off the bat...stick rusty fork in thigh..twist. Such is the experience of a brand new BMW.

What's wrong with it that makes it that awful? Transmission troubles, or?

If you list color & options & location volvo or maybe others can give you a price.

You ever driven an X3 woody? They all drive like [non-permissible content removed].

Loud, rough riding just kidney punishing hard plus rock hard seats even worse then most german cars. and funky throttle response to boot.

They handle great on smooth surfaces but try and turn one on a rough city road and the suspension just goes nuts. The ride is so hard and so rough that they will walk to the outside of a turn on a rough road just as bad if not worse then your old Range Rover would over washboard roads.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806

No, I haven't, that's why I asked the OP why he hated it. I've driven some X5's (w/o SPP), both highway, & on boston roads that would shake up a lexus, & thought they were great. Is the X3 that inferior to an X5 in your experience? (Just askin' because I've considered shopping for a used X3, but maybe not hearing these comments).....

At least my old RR didn't "drive like [non-permissible content removed]", LOL. Handled like the 5000 lb SUV it was, but I don't recall it being shaken up on rough roads. Enjoying those great leather seats always improved things too.......
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
Stuff that would never show up on a test drive :confuse:

I didn't think they drove that bad, but I can see the sport package making it extra rough. I
  • lrguy44lrguy44 Member Posts: 2,197
I had an X5 trade on the lot or about 45 days. Every customer that I had come in on it wound up buying an LR3. Unfortunately, the X5 was sent to auction. The X3 is a stiff ride compared to the LR2. Rough roads will beat you up. Some people may like the X3 ride, it is a personal issue.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Early years had a very rough ride, but they supposedly smoothed it out.

I drove one at the BMW Ultimate Driving Event and commented on the stiff ride, concluding I'd like to try it without the sports package.

The funny thing was - I WAS driving a model without the sports package, which was even stiffer.

    Mama-mia, my kidneys.

A friend has one and likes it, in fact she now wants to trade for an X1 when that comes out.

Such a strong case of buyer's remorse, followed by the desire to buy a soft-riding Lexus RX, can only be due to a not-long-enough test drive.

    Not nearly, nearly long enough.

Those 2 vehicles are worlds apart. Opposite ends of the ride-and-handling scale.
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602
How does the ride in the acura rdx compare with the x3? Another question -- there are bunches of cpo x5's around with prices 45-55k. These are used trucks with 20-30k miles. Who is going to buy them? What happens to the dealers bottom line if the have to be sent to auction? If you make an offer to a sales rep to contact you before they ship for a price that allows 1k over expected auction prices, is that reasonable?
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
The X5 is a much better riding vehicle then the X3 but I have driven them on a couple of roads that just punished me way too much.

A couple of months ago I sold a CPO 2008 S80 T6 to a guy who had a 2004 X3 and his first comment, after saying how comfortable the seats were, was that the ride was just so nice and smooth. I replied well just about anything is smoother then that X3 which got a chuckle out of him cause he never liked that car but his wife did at least until she got a hip replacement. After that she just couldn't stand to drive it anymore. It was too hard to get into, the X3 has a huge door sill, and the suspension just hurt her hip too much.

The old Body Range Rovers like yours that have the solid axles have a tendency to walk or drift on wash board or really bumpy roads. They don't do it so bad as other solid axle vehicles like my Jeeps because of the air suspension but they still do it some. You may have just never hit the right kind of road or the right series of pot holes to experience it.

The X3 and sometimes the X5 has such a rough ride that on a turn with a lot of pot holes the car will walk to the outside at a much lower speed then it should.

I had it happen to me once when driving a sport package X5 back from the BMW dealership in Hartford. I went around a moderate speed corner at say 30-40 mph but there were so many pot holes that the car skipped over to the next lane like a stone skipping over a smooth lake. A softer suspension would have kept the tires more in contact with the road and kept that from happening.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
that I asked about the other day.

Ended up being traded in for $4,650, so right in the middle of the range. Did need 4 tires, + a few other things.

Went for a 2010 TSX that was had on a real mini, so no apparent overallowance.

    "...is that reasonable?..."

You'd think so since the dealer would save the cost and hassle of the auction. However some of the stories I've heard on these boards indicates that dealers would rather burn a car than sell it to a retail customer for auction value.

Must be some sort of "Dealer's Code". :(

Any dealer would rather sell a car at a profit - the auction is the court of last resort. We will even keep cars we have wholesale bids on for a week or two with the hope of making a little on them.
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602
I drive by the bmw store daily and the same cars have been sitting there for monthafter month. The ads in the paper show no sign of even the hint of a drop in price. My take -- if you can spend 50k on a used car -- you can spend 60k on a new one. A 2 year old 60k car should be marketed at 37-40k to get my interest. Doesn't seem to be happening that way.
  • lrguy44lrguy44 Member Posts: 2,197
Jayrider, Once again prices are dictated by what is moving. On higher end lots cars may sit a little longer but still may not be distressed. At the last LR off lease auction, the prices were 2-3k above what they had been a month before.
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602
I'm sure my perspective is flawed. Their doors are still open. I just can't see much of a market for an 08 x5 priced at 49k. Ad in the paper. Whatever.
  • lrguy44lrguy44 Member Posts: 2,197
And the dealer can always drop the price at negotiation - he cannot raise it.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
And the dealer can always drop the price at negotiation - he cannot raise it

I've had car dealers/salesmen try to do that to me at least twice. Once was at a lexus dealer, where I got real interested in a used M-B, but then they claimed the price was a "mistake", & went out & changed the window sticker price, with a big show of sorts. You'd almost think they did that all the time, it was so efficient.

2nd time at a VW dealer, they claimed the price on the vehicle was a "mistake"--Unfortunately I stuck around long enough to manage to buy the used VW at the "original" price--of course it just got worse from there.......until 6 mo. later I managed to unload the POS.....

    I haven't driven an RD-X.

I did check them out on the car show circuit but I felt it was too small.

Great story woodyww. I wish I could have been there for both price adjustments.
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
The RDX has just about a rough a ride as the X3 but gets worse gas mileage with that thirsty Turbo motor and only a five speed automatic.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
True, but if a dealer's inventory prices are sky-high, I'm less likely to walk in the door to begin with.

Huh. Ya know, its the damndest thing and I need someone to set me straight here. As posted not long ago, I have an '05 XC90 2.5T AWD with 51k miles. According to Vmax and Galves, its a ~$16k vehicle.

Now, by all accounts of dealers I've visited, it is in very nice condition. Yet, not one is coming anywhere near that trade value. Highest offer I've had is $14,500. 3 other offers have been "$13,500 to $14k."

So what the heck is going on? This is getting very frustrating. 2 of them say they were getting their numbers from "a database, the market, blah, blah," and 2 of them were looking at Galves. I showed those 2 the error they were making was not adding the $1200 premium package, but even after pointing that out, they wouldn't change their number. Have I just not found the right dealer? Wish I was closer to vmax or BR cause I'm getting fed up with BS.

I think 14.5k is the most you will get.Maybe 15k but that`s stretching it,I think. Used 05-06 Volvos with less than 50k miles are listed from 16.5k onwards which again most probably are negotiable.
So trade in of 14.5k is in line with the retail prices. And packages-like premium or tech package or any other extras don't add much to the resale value.
Just my opinion though.Lets see what volvomax says.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
WELL, there may be a sliver of light. I stepped up a bit and went to a real franchise type dealer. They gave the XC a thorough inspection and were very impressed. Tough to say exactly where the money was, but the offer on the table, as written up, is $16,300 for the volvo and $8890 for an '05 Sentra S 5-spd with 42k miles. That's high on the Sentra, but I think equally high on the Volvo.

I THOUGHT this was good and was going to take the deal... but then something happened. The wife! uh-oh. She squashed it. Says no way. We're sticking to our guns and buying me a $4k car, max. Anyhoo... now it turns out, after I just ran the carfax, it has accident history. So who really knows. The GM claims they have more than $8k in the Sentra, but I'm sure that's BS.

Now, another story I heard I wanted to ask about. GM tells me there are 2 auctions, Mannheim and Bordentown. Says that most small dealers with inexpensive cars visit Bordentown. THERE, our XC90 might only get $14k. But at Mannheim, where the nice cars are, it would get considerably more. And after the inspection, he determined mine is VERY nice and would go there and fetch a premium. Any truth to this?

The dealer was definitely overallowing on the Sentra. An 05 Sentra S with 42k probably has a trade around 6k and most likely around 5.5k and with an accident carfax its value would drop even further.
And with the Manheim vs bordertown query,I have no idea but I dont think they would be that different. There are no free lunches anywhere.I would suggest you try a different more straightforward dealer. If you have Carmax in your area try there. They usually give top dollar for low mileage or well maintained clean vehicles.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
Is it out-of-warranty? I wonder how many people or dealers want to step up to a potentially expensive to repair 5 y.o. Euro-SUV w/ no warranty.....Have you tried to sell it privately?
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736

Yup. Exactly what numbers I had. So my offer was $8k on the Sentra and $15,300 on my Volvo. He said "no can do." Then turned around and hit me with $16,300 for the volvo and $8,890 on the Sentra. Ummmm.... math impaired anyone? Sure!

But, I agree, the bad carfax queers the deal anyway. Had I known that, my offer would have been much different (if I offered at all, which I probably wouldn't). I think it would have been a fair deal on a NICE AND CLEAN '05 Sentra.
