Thanks, there's an s&%*load of 09 & 10 former rental optimas and sonatas in the stores over here. Edmunds TMV has the 09s at around $9000-11000 trade in so I was hoping to get away with one for no more than $12,000 + t&l

well, if it is indeed a buyers market, you could get closer to trade value. $12k seems like a stretch, but anything is possible.

This is tax refund time and those cars get decent mpg. You will be better off buying in august. dealers are tough in the spring. reality sets in later and they are more willing to deal. Check the completed listings on ebay for real prices.

My dealer gave me a base 328i mit slushbox for a loaner. It wasn't all that bad- as a matter of fact my wife loved it. As for me, it's either three pedals, Sport package, and RWD- or nothing.
I'm probably going to help with my dealers ride-and-drive event tomorrow. I'm going to try to get some seat time in a 335i M Sport with the DCT. A couple of fellow CCA instructors are really praising it.

Assuming its 4x4, its worth roundabout $13,500-$14,500 on a trade. So expect to pay $16,500-$17,500 retail.

If its 2-wheel drive, its $2k less.

Back in the mid to late 80's a guy at work bought AMC Gremlins. If they didn't run, he got them running and did an awesome detail job. He could add striping and wheel covers and spiff up the interior. I have to admit, the ones I saw were pretty nice. There was a market for them with young ladies who thought they were cute and he turned over 2-3 per month for a few years. Parked them along a busy road with a for sale sign. Bought them for 5-600 ---- put in 1-200 and sold them for 1200-1400 as fast as he could park them at the curb. Have no idea how he handled the titles or taxes.

    Hey, well done Ray.

You've gone through five or six cars while I've done two ('00 LS & '08 TSX), so it's always interesting to hear where you're going next.

Let's see, was the 'vette the one before this, or did I miss one?

The only reason I got the auto is because it was free at the time, and it was cheaper to lease one with auto. I'm seeing if it's possible to get out of my lease a few months early to get into one of the nice 24 month Z4 lease deals going on now.

Qbrozen, any thoughts on my trade-in from this post? Thanks.

Thanks, q. The dealer is offering 25,8 on trade (27,2 minus cost of new tires), and 1000 over invoice and buy rate on the money factor on a Z4. It looks they are stepping up to the plate on this one.

I am not sure which is the right forum to post this so I thought I would try here. I see the numbers being suggested in this thread and I also see trade in value, private party value and retail price that Edmunds quotes for vehicles.

If I am doing research on a car, should I expect to pay closer to trade in value, private party or retail value. This would be for a used vehicle so I am unsure what 'invoice' would be.

    Thanks
  • cdnpinheadcdnpinhead Member Posts: 5,617
what it will bring at an auction (only dealers get to play), plus any necessary refurbishment, plus (gasp) profit.

Most of the books available to mere grunts are dream lists. They have nothing to do with the real market, which is very volatile & location-dependent. The Phoenix auctions aren't going to bring the same prices as Philadelphior Detroit or Seattle. Florida will screw you all day long.

Your car is worth what it will bring, not what some pinhead (like me) calculates that is "should" be worth.

    Good luck.

Does this mean that I shouldn't use the numbers that Edmunds suggests for TI, PP or retail?

When I am ready to purchase I was planning to negotiate using the numbers Edmunds suggests between TI and PP as well as whatever is suggested in this thread for the vehicle I want.

I am planning on getting either a 2009 or 2010 Infiniti M35 but unfortunately the Real World Prices Paid thread for these years hasn't been replied to since last year so I have no idea what prices people are paying for these vehicles.

You can always check the completed listings on ebay. Lots of variables but it will give actual sold prices and the vast numbers of overpriced cars that didn't sell. Lots of gameplaying by dealers on ebay but there are a few actual sales.
Cargurus.com has a nice site that gives prices for used cars and how they compare to market values.
  • Kirstie_HKirstie_H Administrator Posts: 11,242
Sure, use those values, and as jayrider suggested, check final sales prices on EBay. If you combine all of that information, you should be able to come up with an offer that is at least close.

Used cars are different than new in that they don't have a set "invoice" price like new cars, where the options and packages all have the same MSRP. Each used vehicle is unique.

Just make sure you're comparing apples to apples - for example, if you see a vehicle with cloth seats & 53,000 miles that sold on EBay for 19,000, and you're looking at one with leather and 36,000 miles, you'll want to factor in the upgraded options and lower mileage. Mileage & condition is a big factor in what used vehicles sell for.

And remember, dealers and private parties can ask any price they choose. You won't truly know whether your offer is in the ballpark until you make it.

Cargurus shows pricing for the M35 in the mid-20's. Of course you can buy a variety of nicely equipped new cars for that price but it wouldn't be an M with all that luxury. Still ?????
  • logan00logan00 Member Posts: 13
Thank you all, this helps a lot and gives me some more direction when putting my pricing together.
  • logan00logan00 Member Posts: 13
Thanks jayrider, you are right, I could get plenty of new cars for $25,000 but I have had my mind set on the M35 for years now and since it is time to change my current car, 2000 Nissan Maxima, and I have the funds and ability to get a newer M35, 2 or 3 years old, why not get what I like as opposed to getting a different new vehicle, but not what I want? :)

I can't afford a new one, but I will be happy with this. This will be the 4 car that I have purchased in my lifetime and I still haven't bought new, maybe the next one.

I have purchased a 7 year old Plymouth Horizon, 2 year old 1990 Nissan Maxima and 1 year old 2000 Nissan Maxima, time to step up in class a little. ;)

A good target price is $2500 over real-world trade-in value for a regular used car. In my opinion, NEVER more than $3k over.

For CPO, however, you'd have to add extra cost. This varies greatly by manufacturer. For Infiniti, I believe $1k-$1500 is sufficient.

FYI, I dig the previous M35, too. The new M37 is even sweeter.

That helps a lot gbrozen, I will ask in this thread what the current trade-in prices are when I am ready to purchase.

I assume that cargurus website gives valid numbers?

    24,000 miles
    clean

Infiniti 2010 M35x with both tech and advanced tech packages

    2009 Nissan Murano LE AWD

    Leather, Nav., Dual roofs, etc.

Not a bad price if you really want a nice suv with 38k miles. Traded my SL equipped the same minus nav for 25k in August. 22k miles. You might want to check the tires --- pricy on the LE. I would think that any nice awd loaded suv would bring 25k or so in this market. Question is do you REALLY want it. Happy hunting.

Me personally, I'd rather have a brand new Kia Sorento AWD with leather for 2k more. Nice ride and great warranty.

Could someone be so kind as to provide some real world values for the two MINI's listed below? I am looking to sell/trade in one or both of them and don't know what a reasonable expectation of return might be.

I've heard MINI's residual is high, but I'd like to see what the pros say

Both of these vehicles are in Chicago:

    2010 MINI Cooper Hardtop Base
British Racing Green / Black Roof and Mirrors
    8k miles
    6-speed auto trans
Cold Weather Package (heated seats, mirrors, folding mirrors)
Premium Package (Sunroof, leather seats, piano black interior, Premium Audio)

    2009 MINI Cooper Clubman Base
    Silver/Silver
    17500 miles
    6-speed auto trans
    Cold Weather Package
    Premium Package
(One accident reported - only damage was a broken reflector on driver side fender - no structural damage)

Both are in very good condition with no physical defects or mechanical issues. 2010 is still immaculate, 2009 has some normal wear (carpet around pedals)

Thanks in advance for any help.
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602
20 inchers would be at least $1200 a set with taxes and install. Maybe more.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Ouch, but can't say I'm surprised. We got a flat and the 17" tire was nearly $200 to replace.

I may actually seek out the smaller tires next time I buy a car!

I did a feebay "completed listings" search for 2009-2010 mini's, most were "unsold", but there's a 2010 mini base with 9400 miles that sounds similar in equip., it sold for $17,300.00.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2010-MINI-COOPER-LIKE-NEW-LOW-MILES-AUTOMATIC-/29- 0564326851?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item43a6fbc5c3

There's only one sold 2009 Mini Clubman on feebay, but it's an S, & certified, with 15,673 miles, for $21,750. Not sure how you'd deduct for the S, & certified, for yours, but here 'tis:

You have scared me. $1200 on tires is basically a deal breaker. My friend's wife has an ML Mercedes and he said the tires were just as pricey. Then again, that is an awful lot of car for 26,900.

I like the Murana and almost bought one last year but my insurance company fixed the car instead of totalling it.

My problem is that I don't love any car that is "smart" purchase. I need a SUV or a big wagon, think 5 series, which is out of my budget. The other car that I am considering is a an 2008 RX for 28,900 with 32,000 miles. Base model no nav. I realize that this is more but I feel a "Lexus" is worth the extra.

Alternatively, I am looking at new Pilot LX AWD which truecar says is 26,700. I really don't care about having leather and nav so this may be the way to go. However, the one dealer I contacted quoted me 29,400. Not even close to the truecar price.
