Ditto, after 42 years living in South Florida, I'm ready to come back up north. Florida, even with the lower taxes, gets you in other ways...like we can't buy an extended warranty online among other things. North Carolina is looking better and better to us all the time but wouldn't mind going back to the suburbs of New York. Cold be damned!

Guess so...but we're not leaving for at least 4 more years...my middle daughter just got into pharmacy school starting fall 2012 right near home, so we're gonna stay. When she graduates and gets a job, we'll just follow her. Sure many parents do the same thing! Funny thing, when the kids were younger, my mother made the crack that "none of my kids will ever become a doctor", which I thought was nasty. Now that she's passed, all I can say is, Ma, you were wrong...one of my kids will become a doctor...of pharmacy! We're so proud of her!

My guess is you were probably offered around $16,000 for the Wagon, that's Galves and it's quite accurate, based on auction results and the market I'd be right around the same money.
Galves is pretty much the bible for trade-ins in the northeast, here in the NYC area it's all anyone uses. Unfortunately, it's not free to view online, but the sites that are tend to be highly inaccurate.
Oh, if it has Navi you'd be in the upper 16s... If it has paintwork or an accident indicator on the Carfax you could be much less.
Wrapped my transaction this morning. Traded in my '11 Terrain for a '11 Dodge Durango AWD Heat w/ Popular Equipment Group.
They gave me truecar.com price for the Durango (including holdback) and $23,100 for my Terrain
I was shocked at the trade in as they gave me near kbb excellent condition value based on the 2010 model as the 2011's are still not listed on KBB yet. Edmunds has this trade in @ around $19k.
Location: Cleveland, Ohio Year/Make/Model:2010 Chevy Cobalt SS Turbo Body Style: 2 Door Engine: 2.0 Liter Turbo/ 5 speed manual Driveline: FWD Mileage:23000 Color: Red over Black Major Options: Limited Slip Differential, plus all SS standards, including power moonroof Condition: Great shape-no dings, dents, scratches; only minor stone chips-miles are all highway Tires - have 15K - had separate tires/rims on for winter Brakes - original, rotors resurfaced once Maintenance all performed at dealership Other: No previous damage or paintwork. Car also has dealer installed GM Stage One upgrade kit with full factory warranty coverage. Adult owned, never raced, and otherwise 100% stock.
Nothing extra. They did try to sell me the magical rust protector. Declined all extras. Didn't get any crazy interest rate quote either. Helps to have an 800+ credit score and knowing it going into the deal. Was a very straight up deal. My Terrain, the new Durango, no fluff...
They are a volume dealer, their other dealership across the street is the nation's #1 F-150 and #2 Ford volume dealer....
Actually more concerned with the performance package deducting, not adding....but since its factory sponsored, was hoping for no deduction. Thanks for the info.
Looking to get a trade-in estimate for my VW CC. It is currently being leased, with the last payment in 4 months. Residual is $17900 + fees and tax. Blue Book was $22-$23. Looking to buy car and possibly flip it to make a profit.

Dealer is asking 23,900 for it, but so far friend has negotiated down to 22,500 and the dealer says its the lowest he will go. This seems insanely high to me, but then again, so are used car prices right now.
What should she be looking at?
Thanks.

VW looks to be about $20k-$21k trade-in. So it seems you have some equity here. NY has a trade-in tax credit, right? So if you take it and trade it in (don't buy it first!), dealer doesn't pay the taxes, so you could have $2k-$2500 equity to apply to the new car, PLUS you get out of paying tax on $20k worth of the new car.
Dodge - this one is probably beyond my capabilities with what I have on hand. My WAG is that you might be looking at $16k. Definitely need Bill on this one.
Rogue - number is still a little high. Dealer might have $19,500 or so in it. It would have to go south of $22k for me to bite, personally.

In reality you're probably better off shooting for, at the time the lease is up, to get the equity out of it.
Right now it's probably a $20k trade-in car. That's now, not March. You'll also have to pay sales tax on the residual, and find a private buyer for a $20k++ car, that's not always that easy, and people who do buy such cars generally want to steal em.
See, on a car like this you'll be up against CPO ones for $23-24,995... with new tires, and the warranty, etc.
And nobody knows what the market will be like in 4 months, check back then and we shall see...
But we're talking about the dealer actually buying the car and then paying the person trading it in $20k for it, no? So why wouldn't there be a credit? I know I've gotten credit for leased cars here in NJ in the past because the dealer was buying it, not just taking it in and returning it to the lease company.
Although... come to think of it, I guess because nobody ever paid tax on that residual ...?? But I'm certain I've gotten the credit in the past. Maybe a mistake on the dealer's part? They've never asked me to come back and fix the error.
'11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S
Since sales tax was only collected on the sum of the payments, not the residual there's no sales tax credit when you trade in a leased vehicle.
If you trade in a car that you own on a leased vehicle, you can get a sales tax credit in NJ.
The only way the OP would get a tax credit is if they bought out the car, paid sales tax on the residual, titled it in their name and then traded it in, but that's usually counterproductive.
Thanks for all the information. I may bring it to Carmax to get an idea of what they would buy it for. Even if I wind up with $1000 in equity, that is still better than nothing. Considering the residual is $17900 and I have $900 in payments left, even a buyout of $20K (which is reasonable) would net me something.
Might also try to bring it to an Audi dealer as I'm looking to get into a new or used A4. That might give me some leverage on negotiating the buyout of the CC.
A while back I inquired as to the value of my 2007 Highlander Hybrid Limited FWD w/34.6K miles and all options. You provided a range of 19.5K up to a possible 21K and to shop it around based on it's condition & options. I had been checking what Carmax was getting for similar vehicles as well. Based on that info I went to a dealer to purchase a loaded 2011 Toyota Venza V6 FWD. MSRP was 37,954 and I offered 34K for their car and wanted 21K for mine. The sales mgr said my car was worth only 17K and it would be hard for them to sell it due to it only being FWD - this was in Richmond, VA. They did offer the Venza to me at 33K (not including the 1K rebate) which I thought was a good price. Anyway, he suggested I take my car up to Carmax (2miles away) and see what they would offer. I did just that and they offered me 22K!!! An hour or so of my time and I got an extra 5K for my car - not bad!! I took their offer, signed over the title and the salesman came and picked me up and I went back with the bank draft and bought their car. All in all I think I did good on getting a very generous amount for my HH, and a very good price on the new Venza. I've checked online and Carmax already sold the HH after less than a week being listed. I just hope I didn't go from the frying pan into the fire since the HH was rock solid and w/o any issues. I hope the Venza will be at least 90% as good although it is a much nicer car in many ways.
Thanks so much for providing me with insight as to what my car might be worth. It is always better to have more information than not enough!

$17k is real low, and you'd think a Toyota dealer would be strong on their product too.
I was thinking $21k on a push, so you did well. The Venza is a nice truck, people I know that have em love em.
