We are buying the Civic regardless. I figured if nothing else we can buy it, clean it up real purdy, and put it in the autotrader (what's a good private party price by-the-way?). Worse that can happen is it not sell and then we have to keep it
Also, do you think $4250 is a fair private owner price for a 93 Civic EX coupe 5-speed? It's that teal green color over dark gray int. 141,000 miles. a few sctraches and dings but no paintwork. It has the spoiler and we have records for the timing belt within the last 15,000 miles. Tires are great and it needs nothing but a good owner

Oh, and its got a nice dent in the front fender that we did an OK job of straightening, but I have yet to get it painted.
My wife likes the LR Discovery, so I'm thinking about it. I don't think, however, that we'd be able to get out from under the Subaru so early (only had it about 20 months). Not to mention we overpaid for it to begin with to get out of a lease.

What do you think ? maybe 13 grand ??

I have sent a ton, of 4x4's your way this year. Thank you very much.
Ok my friend .. it's an SLE with new skins. The miles are super right for the year ..
We have about a ghee whiz in some "fix me ups" .. 4x4's draw big "cake" in your area, so I gotta think your lookin' at "in and around" that $6 figure on a trade, even with the stuff to be fixed .. IF, the rest is clean, and it can stand tall.(if not, start deducting)
Me personally .. I have it cleaned and detailed .. make it look like a diamond (forget the fixes) .. drop it in the paper with a FAT five liner for $8,950 --- and let some one come over, and slap Ya around for $8,2/$8,5. this vehicle has no miles ...
Happy hunting ... and let us know.
Terry.

Ok, I'm guessing it's a LE. It's a 99 with 30 short klicks. If it has "eyes" .. looks good, no fruit loop stuff.. on a trade, it "could" do in the short $11's, high $10's -- So, Abs is all over this one ...

I shot the seller a quick email and told her to post here... she hasn't, but she's bought this thing for about the same money fairly recently from a private person, and she was a little bitter when I told her what I *thought* it might be worth... my guess would be just under $3k on trade, take anything over $4k on the street. But what do I know... low miles but wrong color... good car but unpopular... let's suppose it's pretty clean...
Please enlighten me, oh Knowledeable Ones!

I want to get rid of my '97 Accord EX 4-dr, black, 60k, auto, superclean (once I detail it). Tight .. no squeaks/rattles .. and all records.
There are hardly any '97s around here to base anything on .. I'm thinking $12 and take the first 11.5?
The object of my affection is a black '92 Lexus SC300, auto, 85k, very clean, with all records
but he's asking $12.5.
What do you think, Terry and Bill?
Thanks.

Jeez!
I mean.. I dunno... $12-13K maybe?
Bill
If she's reading this she is about to hate me.
That sounds like a $2,500-3K wholesale car. No miles helps, Purple hurts.
Umm.. $4,000 retail... maybe she can get $4,500.
$6,400? Nuh-Uh. Not since 1999.
Sowwy...
Bill
Your car:
$8,000-8,500 wholesale, $10,900/bo in the paper, Grab $10,500-10K.
You're a tad high here I think... But if you can get $12K and make ya a "three and a half pounder" good for you
On to the SC. The 6-cyl SCs arent all that super hot. What color is it? Oh.. ok.. Onyx. So say its just like NEW.
It will waddle across the block at $7,500-8K or so and the check you write should be no more than $10,000-10,500 or so.
$12,500? Not unless you get $10K on trade for the Accord...

Buy it. I think that this truck would do $10,500-11K across the block easily. So then you have fees..etc...
You can by it for what a dealer would pay for it at the auction, actually maybe a tad less.
$13K is what I think you ought to be able to get for it on a private sale... And what I would tell you to shoot for (Id say grab $12,300+ tho)
Can you make money on it after you buy it out after paying taxes? Prolly not a lot, not enough to make it worthwhile (After taxes..title..etc.. maybe $700-800 on a private sale) but if you like it, I doubt you could go out and buy one for that.
Bill
Sorry if I missed one!
Feel free to send me to my room... And speaking of punishment, where's Terry hiding?
OK... So you had a very light game of bumper cars with it, and it has about as many miles as I'd wanna see on a 1996ish Subie...
That being said, righ market for it...
Still, I think we have $6,500 to maybe $7K here...
Bill
If you're thinking of buying yours, offer them less. My residual was sky-high as well, of course, but $9550 is still too high.
good luck
Thats not a bad deal at all. Figure... say I pay $9K for a Rodeo at the sale. Now I'm into it automatically with Fees for $9,175 or so. Add $100 or so in floorplan, $40 to transport it..blah blah blah...
The Question you gotta ask yourself is... Can you go out and Duplicate your car on the market for that kind of $$? Answer is likely going to be a NO.
On a Private sale you'd be crazy to sell your owncar for within $500 or so of what it would do across an auction block.. it would be a waste of time. I certainly cant sell cars for within $500 of what I pay for them... Otherwise I;d have to get paid by Edmunds
Bill
Ooop's an excellent price for both of those ...
Especially Pondview ... if you can buy it for $11, that's a deal..! You living in the NE, it would do an EASY $11 and change at the chutes. A dealer will buy it, send it home, service it, by the time he's done he's will have the high $11's in it. That would be stuck in a paper for $14,900 --- you can throw yours in for $13,900 and let someone come over and "steal" it from you for $12,8/$13/$13,200
IF -- you decide to send it back, make sure your paper work is *signed sealed and delivered to you*. Gecal is horrible on returns, I have a customer that's being charged $600 for a headliner ....Yup, a headliner.
Good luck ..and stay in touch...
Terry.
Unless it's all trashed out, tires are burnt off and you have Antlers still hanging off the hood from your last hunting trip .. :-)

You guys are about a grand apart on the wholesale, but since Bill called it a 96ish, sorry, I gotta go with Terry's 8 (not to mention I WANT to go with the 8
Anyhow, taking the 8, what might I get if the fender was painted?
Also, what do you guys think of a 96ish Land Rover Discovery with the dual moonroofs and jumper seats? Say 70-80K clicks. automatic.

Thanks for your help, guys.
Where would you guys peg (retail) the following:
'98 V70 non turbo
Pretty basic- 5 speed, cloth, no roof, no alloys, only real option is cold weather pack. 53k miles. Dark green/gray. It's been sitting on the lot of the local Euro joint for a couple months now.
'97 850 GLT wagon... auto, cold weather pack, roof, CD...the whole nine. 67k. Maroon over gray leather, on the same lot.
Tempted...(Mrs. Lance will most likely slap me back into reality, though...)
It's that Flippin' handshaker you have sticken' out of the console that doesn't help it (to your advantage)..l.o.l.
But, if it's a nice ride .. the dealer probably has maybe $12 in it ..and that may be a stretch, based on the time he has had it .. Jan right ..? I'm surprised some College guy hasn't grabbed it yet. . ..I'm sure the dealer would Love to see that puppy go -- by by!
The 850 has a lot more stuff, miles are right, plus it has one of those new fangled inventions called an automatic transmission (I have read about those) ..l.o.l. ---- I have a feeling, that he has "around" $13 in this puppy. What's he asking for em' ..?
So pick your poison .....
Terry.
I was looking into relieving my nephew of his '96 RR because he's having probs making payments and discovered all these horror stories about mid-90s
Rovers (RR's and Discos) -- even from diehard LR owners.
Unless you really want it for offroading and are willing to do alot of the maintenance yourself, you'll be in for many (expensive) days at the shop.
looks like the kid will have to get thru this on his own.
JP
Sorry, got a little carried away there. :-)
Ok it has 17k, low for the year... right color (kinda) .. it's a manual, hmmm how strange. And it has all the good stuff going for it.
If it's clean, no Bug bites, no little critters running around the interior, then you are driving a vehicle that should Swat "around" $12/$12,500 on a trade.
I hope that figure doesn't Bug you ...
Terry. :-)

That said, I like the new Discos and may lease one for the wife when her lease is up.
Well I never ever buy em... and youre in the NE now... So I will defer.
Ya surprised me there.. really... =O
Re: Rovers... I have had decent luck, but 95-early 97 4.0/4.6s are hit or miss...
Bill
$28,900 doesnt sound all that bad really...
Is it me, And Terry has me beat on these, but I gotta think thats a $26K truck at the sale easily... So $28,600 all said and done isnt all that bad really... $27,500 would be a steal.
I'd rathe Terry hits this one... I dont pay much attention to em.. I hang out in the exotic lanes
Bill
I went to Carmax last week and they offered me $12,050 for it (of course, I expected more). I haven't negotiated any numbers with the dealer my wife wants to buy a new car from, but I wanted an idea when we go in and your numbers and Carmax's are very helpful.
Two questions:
What do you think I can get selling it on my own? I've looked at ads and price estimaters online, and the prices are all over the place. What's a realistic private sale number? It's in very good condition (no bug bites and a clean interior).
Has the resale value of Beetles dropped a lot lately? I could have sworn values were much higher just a few months ago. Do you think they will go up as we get nicer weather, or have Bugs finally caught up with thier faddish demand?
Thanks!

Saturday Night Fever, is a super top 10 movie, but the "Disco" Rovers, well their ratings aren't doing so well ..l.o.l.
It's got a ton of klicks ..and so you are lookin' in and around $6/$7ish ..
Stayin' Alive ...
Terry.
Find a price, you both feel comfortable with and go from there. I just paid $26,500 in Manheim for a 00 SLT (has it all) 22k, I paid $27,500 for one last week in N. Carolina. 01's are doing well over $30++ if they are nice -- and I'm in the "wholesale" end of it.
So, now what ...? The price seems fair.

I have no idea how much the fender on the soob would cost. Its not bad. It wasn't in a traffic accident or anything. The wife just needs a little coaching when parking next to poles. Somehow she caught the side of the fender. So, picture a football sized dent and missing paint. We sorta did a backyard bang-out on the dent last year and primed the spot to prevent rust. That's where its at now. So, does that clear anything up? I kinda feel like getting it painted might not be worth it since you guys always say that paintwork can be spotted by the educated. I mean, if they are going to know it had body work, why try to hide it? But, if it would cost me, say, $250-$300 to fix and add $500 to the trade-in, then I'll do it. Any thoughts?

But, after today's posts, should I be considering a 98 or 99 Discovery instead of a Grand Cherokee? Goal is to drive for 18 months or 30K, and have the lowest depreciation. I doubt reliabilty is an issue, since neither has a stellar reputation here. Assume the Discovery has higher repair costs, but other than that, what's your opinion, Bill & Terry?
But on the retail side, they have a huge book, and people will use em' as say "Hey the retail book say's it's worth this and that" .. so if it's worth $7 on the wholesale side, then $10 is a more than fair offer. But if you can give some more details on specific a vehicle, we can be much more helpful.
And yes, get the Forester fixed. They are popular, especially up north and the reliability and build quality speaks for itself .. they might be a little goofy lookin' (nothing personal) .. but people love em'. I can spot a bad job a mile away, but if it takes me a few, then the body guy did his job the right way, and it will sell.
Yes, it's funny. I have read some posts about the Volvo's .. but people who know em, drive em', live em .. know they are a fine vehicle. If you get some spare time some night, read through the Benz post's -- you will be on the floor. l..o..l...
I hope this helps ...
Terry.
There easy to sell, the market is vast ... if you get a Riskovery -- Oooop's I mean a Discovery, your market dwindle's and buyers are scarce at trade or sell time ...
Terry.
