Did you see last weekend's AJC? There were 30 something Civic EXs alone in the paper. There was one person with a 1994 5 speed EX with 148k mi asking $4400. There was one 1993 EX with 190k mi asking $3500. It seems like it would be kind of hard to private sell a Civic around here beacuse the paper is full of them. Not only classifieds, but all the dealers list Civics in their used inventory too.

According to the salesman the guy indeed did order his S80 with cloth :-O
Now, I'm not sure if you can order it from the factory that way, or if he had a local shop redo the interior. I DO know the cloth in the 960 didn't look as nice as the stuff in my '94 Accord, and that's saying something.

..... Like I said before .. were like the "United Nations' here, we talk about everything ..

And that is a great question -- RL's are just one super vehicle. They are a wonderful buy on the pre-owned market. They will run forever, no "brain damage" never see a service dept., super on fuel, quiet, great road cars, classy and --SAFE. A lot of bango for the bucko ... The TL's -- they run, and look after themselves.

All the vehicles you have listed are super ... there is some quirks on some, and some with little or none. The Q45 is a nice ride .. that's a vehicle that has to be driven first. A little boatish in the curves ..and soft in the corners and wet roads, because its a rwd. I35's .. well, perhaps a Maxima instead, less money, better re-sale.

Bimmers are great .. a little pricey at buy time -- a bunch pricey, at service time.

You have a great line up ... add a S70/S80 Volvo in there (greeeat vehicles), and you should be about complete.

The best way for him to find the vehicle ..that will do the most is: Take the time to drive em'. Not going around the block -- but grab each one and drive it for an hr or so .. his roads, his speeds, his habits -- only then, will he accomplish the proper vehicle for his want's and needs.

Keep us tuned ..... News at 11.

    Terry.

Okay, I remembered what you told me about mega-milers, Bill ... you have to -steal- them ... so what do you think of this:

'00 3.2TL with Nav, white, auto with sport-shift,
clean, windshield has a small chip, little scratches on bumper, carfax comes up clean (one-owner) 80kmi ... asking $17k.

    thanks.

    OK... Subypower:

02 Santa Fes with the V6 allloaded up, are doing around $20K or so, but that is with under 1,000 miles. Get to 7-8K and you're at $18K.

4cyls are around $16Kish with about 7-9Kmiles on 'em.

Day after ad was in paper, neighbor sold 86 Honda Civic for asking price $1200. Many Honda Odyssey sell used for as much as MSRP when new.
Many Honda Civic and Accord for sale since top selling new vehicles.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Yeah, like thats a really radiacal price for suure!

    /California Voice

    :)

Yup. If it were yours.. Id say $22,000ish ona trade and to not take less than $24,000. Plus it has a warranty.... Does it have a Moonroof? I assume not... But its got NOmiles, is THE Color combo too.. and a Tip... Me likes it.

    Step 1)

    Grab Checkbook.

    Step 2)

    Buy car.

If in doubt, refer to Step 2.

    Heya neighbor!

Hmm... the Audi... Cloth hurts it. Cloth bad. No Cloth in A4s... sigh... OK. Its Pearl White, I assume its clean... If youhave the old Wheels, bolt em back on and sell the old ones on eBay because they add OOGOTZ as Tony Soprano would say.Miles dont really help either.

Its a $7K-7,500 unit on trade...

On to the VW... Its got highish miles too... Hmm... OK. We got what we got then. Here in Orlando, its a $8,500-9K car on trade.

Retail? Dont let the Audi go for less than $9,200... and hold to $10,500 on the VW. Those be ROCK-BOTTOM too...

Whatcha buying? I know people all over town and can tell ya where and where not to go.

(Hint.. Royal on Lee Rd is the best for VWs)

    Uh Oh... Paintwork!

(siren sounds... like a submarine diving)

    Oh dear...

Still, its a $6K unit with 70K or so on it... And you werte offered $7,500? Yikes!

    Hmm...

Cash the warranty in. You can tranfer it to a Private Buyer, but not via a dealer. So cash it in ASAP.

THat being said, its a $10Kish unit...

    OY VEY!

$16,000 in damage? What hit it? A 747-400?

And it has more miles than a 96 should have... damn. I personally would not want to go anywhere near this. Id have to drag it to the sale and announce unibody damage too. And I am sure it has paintwork all over. Plus 80K miles. Yeah, that'll go over REEEEEEal well :(

Terry is steppin uphere. I wouldbe $6,500-7K on it if it now looks new.

    But I HATE SMashed cars.

You want me to do my rendition of "Ode to Vauxhanslobbins?"

    =D
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Yup..

    Some good choices there.

My 2 cents... An XJ8. If not big enough, an XJ8L. You KNOW how I say Hyundais should be bought used, right? Well the DUMBEST car to buy new is a Jaguar XJ8. Now, you know I love these little buggers, but they have the resale value of Beer.

If an XJ8 is too small, Look for an XJ9L with the 4.9" Stretch.

That being said, a BMW or an MB is always a really good buy. Q45s are stiff and tough to sell, (97+s..) and RLs, to me, are like Big Accords.

The Jag, MB and BMW are all "Special". Of the three, the Jaguar will be by far the most reliable, Followed by the Mercedes.

Yeah thats a BOATLOAD of miles.

So, what, they lived inTampan and Commuted to Naples every day? Oy...
Still... its a new-shape 3.2TL And its Pearl White.

$16K wholesale.. so $17K retailis a good price. Still, Strat em at $15,500.. you no asky you no getty...

I decided, ultimately, to pass on the 960 for the following reasons:

    1.) It's cloth.
    2.) It's an automatic.
3.) Mrs. Lance won't let me.

Guess which was the overriding reason...

It's a car my Pastor was looking at. I'm trying to understand their asking price of 13,800. So, are they marking their cars up 5Gs, or did they pay 10-11 for this thing? It's a franchise dealer. I suppose they're trying to recover the pack. i dunno. I told him to try to buy it at under 11k. I'll keep ya posted. Thanks!

    Thanks, Bill.
Now help me decide which is the better bang for the buck:

    - '97 Acura RL with 65kmi
    - '00 Acura TL with 80kmi

both in similar condition and exactly the same price. Looks aside, the RL is cushier, quieter, roomier, but is a bit short on the performance side and has three years on the TL. The TL is a better performer but has megamiles. Oyvay!

I have a 1994 Lexus ES300, clean with two minor dings, leather and sunroof, based in Boston, MA. Mileage is at 138K.

What is the trade-in value vs. selling myself, and what are the chances of my selling this car within a month or two?

    Thanks.

I have a 98 Silver Civic EX Coupe with 42 clicks in St. Louis, MO. It is an auto with spoiler, fogs and alarm in addition to all of the standard items.

It has been rear-ended once, very minor and I don't even know if it would even show up on carfax. Bumper was filled and repainted -- can't even tell.

Windshield has a few rock chips as does the hood but the rest is in good condition. Original tires and brakes, still in good condition.

What can I expect for trade and if I sold it myself?

    Thanks,
    Joel

...... Thanks for the Xtra info ..l.o.l...

Hey, that's a good lookin' rig -- who's that funny lookin' dude next to it ...? Texas boy ..? :-)

Seems like you have taken care of it, it's a little stiff in the miles dept -- but I have a hunch, it's been careful miles.

If it looks just like that, when you go trade it ... it will do a strong $10. On the veranda to the retail left, you can start it up at $12,950 and let some city boy come buy it, with $11,8/$12,2/$12,400 ...

Nice vehicle ... let us know.

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... If it's nice and clean, knee deep in rubber -- and the interior has missed the cantaloupe fights .. then with the miles that are just ok .. you should be "in and around' the $13/$13,5 zipcode.

The TL's they are similar (great vehicles..!) ... with low miles should hit the deck at around that $22/$22,5 figure to the dealer -- Don't get all psyched out on the Nav .. they only bring $3/$400 Xtra, wholesale.

I'm thinkin a great deal for you should be -- your vehicle and "around" $12+ the taxes and the flee 's.

    Let us know .. were just like Denny's -- open 24hrs/365 :-)

    Terry.

....... I'm not real good at this math thing ...

    BUT ---

    $23,200 TL.

    - $11,000 Accord

    _______________

    = $12,200

    Plus any taxes and flee's

    He He He .....!

    That's the Strike Zone ..!

Now, let's give them a "Courtesy bump" ...

Tell them, you will do $11,900 plus the wax, the tax and roof racks --- and you will put it bed ... Right now!(if not, take the $12 diff)

    Yep .. that's a deal.

Ok, next -- #156 where are you ..?

    Terry. :-)

    Thanks for the help, guys.

Terry--personally I like the RL as well as it is the newst of the bunch. But, it's not for me! I'll pass along your thoughts on the car.

Bill--I think the XJ8 is the second best looking car on the road, after the M-B S- Class. I had no idea that the XJ8 was so reliable--even better than an E320? I guess I'm still thinking about the 1970's XJ6s. It is amazing how they lose half their value in a couple of years!

No takers on the Hyundai XG350? :)

Well I got an agreed to price for 02 ES300 at JB dealer in O'town. Last time I talked to a JB dealer and had an agreed to price they wanted me to take the car home then, use their financing and add on numerous options. I walked and that was 5 years ago. Question for Bill: Are they playing straight on this one or will they pull same thing when I go to pick up car on Friday? I have a pre-approved loan CU where I insert the amount. The old JB Honda said no to that. They said no problem with me arranging my own financing and have said nothing about having to purchase rust protection, extended warranty, etc. Silver this time. Hope thats better that black.
    Thanks for your help/advice

Still waiting to hear back on the trade-in and private sale value of my 98 Civic EX from post #6185.

Silver w/ 42k miles, spoiler, fogs and automatic. Tires and brakes are the originals but still in good shape. I was rear-ended once but it just nicked up the bumper which was repaired and not noticeable. not sure it would show up on Carfax.

A few rock chips in windshield and paint in hood, but everything else is A-OK.

Let me know what you think.

    Thanks,

.......... SORRY, ghee whiz ---- did somebody get out of the wrong side of the bed this morning .. ---

    A little cheese with your .. Whine ..? l..o..l...

Ok slick .. it's a 98 Civic EX, it's an auto -- there's some help, is it a 2 or a 4dr? Not much going on with those tires ..ugh.

A little leap frogging on the tail end .. no help there.

Bullets in the windshield .. hmmm, bad neighborhood ..? And we have new Rustoleom on the hood -- well, based on what your telling us .. it sounds a little on the rough side.

But it does have a spoiler and some frogs jumping around it.

Well, let me ponder this -- Ok, I'm done.

Soooo, it's probably worth around the ultra low $9's on a trade -- on the retail end, start it up at $11,9 and let someone go at $10,7/$10,9/$11,200.

Sorry for the delay, I had Lipo suction today, and Bill has lost his keys for the Edsel.

Please help...what is a fair trade in for a 2001 Saab 9-3 SE 4dr with auto, heated seats and metallic paint(silver) and 14,500 miles. Car is in mint condition. I am in the phoenix AZ area zip 85296. Your help would be greatly appreciated

..... Hey good morning ... Phoenix heh..?

I will be out there in a few weeks to take a shot at We-Ko-Pa, Thunderbirds and of course my favorite ... Wildfire.

but anyway -- what's up with this Saab ..? Golf clubs don't fit ..? l.o.l..

It's an 01, and it has 14klicks, it's the right color for AZ -- If it is like new, shows 02, drives 02 .. paint and interior is still 01, no dings, burn holes, no sand barrier kisses, then you should be driving a vehicle that will get "around" $20ish on a trade ...

    Have fun ...

    Terry.

good to chat with you the other day. I miss the car business, like I miss ingrown toenail surgery. Just kidding I had a great time in the car business - I'd go back to the desk or F&I in a heartbeat if this gig ever dries up, but I don't see that in the near future.

As long as manufacturers make cars with problems, then handcuff and don't pay the service departments where they can't fix 'em right, I'll have a job.

Was wondering if you guys had a chance to evaluate my post #6184.

1994 Lexus ES300 with sunroof, clean w/138K on the odo, in Boston MA.

Is it even worth trying to sell on my own, with so many recent used cars out there, or just take the hit on a low trade-in?

Can I get some Gouda, please? ;-) No problem with the delay. After I posted, I re-read my post and knew that I would get dinged for whining. Didn't mean to convey impatience. I will go to my room now.

Anyway I was wondering if new tires, fixing the bullet holes in the windshield, and the fact that it is a 2 door make a difference in the values?

We need a real estimate as to how much we could sell our vehicle to a private buyer for. Lease is rapidly coming to an end. We already have a replacement vehicle (which we love). Vehicle is over mileage quite a bit and we're looking at a $2500 to $3000 mileage penalty. No excess wear and tear according to the inspection on the truck. Lessor has offered 7-7.5% to finance for 48 mos. Residual's around $14,500. We figure we can avoid the mileage penalty by buying (i.e. financing) and selling it ourselves. We can swing the note for a while longer until it's sold. So basically, we have two questions:

    1) What's the real life value ? Car is a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, taupe frost, E package (cassette, air, basics), very clean inside and out, new tires, good maintenance, never wrecked, mileage 65K (mostly city miles)

    2) Better to dump it at lease maturity and eat penalty or buy it and then sell it (thus avoiding mileage penalty) ?

    Thanks for all replies.
