It's the right color, the right interior .. sounds serviced to the gills, good miles for the year, a baby scrape and that's about all.
But -- it's a handshaker. -- Man, they can be the "kiss of death" on a great hi line vehicle. Everyone want's to look and everyone want's too, Oh and Ah.. but, the buyers are going to be few and far between.
On the wholesale side .. it would be a hard stretch to reach $19. On the retail end of this, probably $21 and change would be the right buy price.
He will get the hint when it stands for sale til August.
Thanks for the reply guys. I had a feeling I could do a bit better than $500
Ghulet, the Benz is silver with blue mb tex interior (no tears or stains). The sunroof works and it has a Blaupunkt CD player that is a lot better than the Becker unit. I'm the third owner and have all records since the car was new.
Like I said, the a/c is inop and the odo is broken. It leaks a bit of oil (about a quart between oil changes) and the suspension groans a bit going over bumps. The tranny (original) slipped a couple of times last week.
It's an independent used dealer (one of the larger and, from what I hear, more reputable ones here in town.) He claimed to have to do nothing to it when he got it in...it had been very well maintained by its previous (and first) owner. The asking price when I stopped in there, like in January some time, was $4988. It's been sitting since then--no idea why, other than this isn't exactly Swedish car country (though I have seen more than I'd expect--mostly with Johnson County plates (Iowa City, big college town), of course.)
Probably the only thing wrong with it at this point is that it's been sitting on the lot for so long. Were it a 5 speed, I'd have begged and pleaded w/ Mrs. Lance (almost undoubtedly unsuccessfully) to pick it up myself. As it is, I think it would make a great replacement for my co-worker's K-Car.
Im with Terry here... Although I think the stick hurts it a little less than he does, it IS a BMW... but then I am partial to handshakers on these cars. But the BMW Buyer of today is different than the guy buying the 2002 3 years ago.
Wow. I just realized they havent even sold them in 26 years. Wow.
Back to reality. Or some semblance thereof.
Yeahup.. $19Kish.. but I think ya can be a tad greedier than $21K.. try $22,900 and see what happens. You can always coem down. I wouldnt take any less than $21K tho.
The Accord? $15,500-16K as a trade-in, so retail I dont think you should cut it loose for a dime under $17,500ish.. Advertise it for $17,900.
Hondas sell well, but they have no "book" on them. (I.E. On a super clean, low-mile accord, Book retail is often a fair retail price)
Meanwhile I can sell older Range Rovers for $2-3K back of Loan and make a mint on them...
The Truck? I'm thinking... Its worth $15Kish wholesale, so.. they prolly are asking $17,995 for it so start em at $16K and see what happens as Terry would say (Notice how he has me doing the lots of periods thing too?). But $17K or so I think is fair retail.
Yoda or the Volvo ... well, the thing is we need to replace both mine and the wife's car so we need a sedan and something that can haul the dog. I guess we can live with two sedans ... that means she can have the T5 and I can get my 3-series.
The SL... Hmm... I mean, I could see it touch $50k.. right place, right time... I dunno. With the 03s hitting and all, I'd be afraid to really step up on a new one right now. Ditto my buddy Joe over at Courtesy Mercedes-Benz err.. I mean "Mercedes Benz Orlando".
With them hitting, they taking a lot of 98-00s in on trade right now...
I have a great low-mileage (<30,000) 1999 2.8 Audi A4 Quattro with a couple very minor dings/scratches. But I did spill some paint in the trunk once and it got on the spare tire cover and the back of the seats. Besides this, this is a clean car. Its a 5-speed, leather, full Bose system, sunroof, heated seats, etc. Is this paint thing going to cost me a ton? Thanks!
...... I would have to see this one, or have it better explained too me.
The miles are right, it's a 2.8, it has the Bose, leather, and the slider .. not only do you have a paint problem, but you have a "handshaker" problem going on between the front seats.
I would have to guess on this one .. I'm thinkin around $17 on a trade.
Wow, $5k real money on a low-mile '94 Explorer 4x4? I don't question Terry's numbers for a minute, but.... "people crazy"!
I've got a '92 Ford Aerostar POS (which is Ranger based also), and it's nickel-and-diming me to death. I have a buddy who bought a low-mile '95 Taurus, and he got a speeding ticket for 82 in a 70... tach was showing 70 mph so he gets it checked at the dealer ... guess what: needs a new speedo... guess what again: Ford doesn't sell those parts anymore...
7 years later, the best-selling car in America at the time... WHAT??? No Parts??? Beware the ancient Ford...
Feeling better now, I remain, -Mathias East Lansing, MI
..LOL much better, thanks. The Taurus rankles, though.. he tells me about it, I say "who told you to buy a Taurus in the first place?" He says "You did!". Ooops. Seemed like a good idea at the time... -m
I am thinking of trading my '96 Villager in for a Honda CVR. My Villager is in good condition and has always had reg. maintenance. It has few scratches, no dings or dents and the interior looks new, including all mats. It had a new engine put in it spring of 2001 -- took it in for routine maintenance, put out a code of deep engine knock. Dealer said there was a recall if this message appeared and they felt it needed to be replaced. Cost me nothing to have it done. Van has 111,000 miles on it, but the engine actually only has 17,000. How much will this hurt/help when I trade it in?
I just bought a brand new 2003 Toyota Corolla which I'm very dissatisfied with and am considering trading it in for a Toyota RAV4. I expect to lose a whole lot of money but want to minimize my loss as much as possible.
I read somewhere on this website that most States give credit for the trade-in, so that you pay sales tax only on the difference in price. Can someone enlighten me if this IS THIS APPLICABLE IN CALIFORNIA??? For example if the dealership gave me $14,500 for my Corolla and the RAV4 costs $21,000, can I expect to pay sales tax on only $6,500 (21,000 minus 14,500)
2001 Jeep Cherokee Classic 4 dr, 4wd, Dark Blue Metallic, Excellent in and out, Auto, A/C, PW, PL, Overhead console, privacy glass, 42K, Towing package, am/fm/cass/cd, all the good stuff. In Colorado.
Q. '99 Ford ZX2 - Black 31,500 miles....loaded with all available options good condition.......some scratches and dings. In S. FLorida Whats it worth as a trade in ?
Thank you in advance and we hope we have enough info here. I hate being sent to my room, unless hubby goes along. It's a 99 charcoal A6 quattro with dark grey, auto, cd, CLOTH interior, NO sunroof, it has 18k. It's in like new shape, no dings or dents and the interior has seen no battles, could show as new. The lease is up next month and the payoff is 23,500. Is this worth the value to purchase or release for the next 6 months at the same payment. The next one is the tough one. It's my sisters vehicle, they have a new one on the way, so this one must get traded or sold. A 98 Pontiac Firebird Trans am, with 9,800 miles (there ist baby) black with dark grey interior, auto, ttops, wheels, cd, all the power stuff you could order in 98. This car never see's the rain and stored winters, so its like new. What do you think, trade wise or sale.
Thanks for the info on the explorer. After Bill said 3500 i passed. Now, i'm having second thoughts...thanks Bill :P
My sister won it and i thought it looked pretty good for the money. She was all panicked about buying on ebay. I thought i'd bounce it off of yous guys before checking it out.
BTW, what are some common ouches to be looking out for with these explorers? I don't recall any serious drivetrain issues. You know, like lousy trannies (tauruses)
I currently have a 98 SE, 5spd, dark blue metallic, base SE model with alloys, spoiler, etc, no slider nor power seats, 52k miles. Straight car...front line ready. No dings, etc
See, I was thinking "4WD inFlorida" and Terry is always up in the frozen Tundra.... Besides, he hits the SUVs and Trucks better than I do. I never ever buy em unless they say "LAND ROVER" on em.
BTW, I know C&K Auto. Good people, we've dont business with them before... they're very very close (4 miles or so) fromwhere I ghrew up.
you wrote: "BTW, what are some common ouches to be looking out for with these explorers? I don't recall any serious drivetrain issues. You know, like lousy trannies (tauruses)"
I looked into this a little before buying a (somewhat similar) '92aerostar 3 yrs ago. The powertrain is pretty good -- afaik, the 4.0 V6 is a straight descendant from the engine that powered german high-end Fords in the '70s and '80s. "Autobahn-erprobt", you know.
I've got 131k on mine and expect it to last until I tire of it, which may not take long. The engine management system is extremely simple and unlikely to give any trouble... no EGR, no air pump. Engine/Tranny are whiny and fairly loud, but shifts are good and come at the right time... lots of torque helps. I swear i changed the original fluid out of the tranny at 110k miles when i got it, and no problem so far. Never towed, though. These are not as strong as GM transmissions.
the 4.0 is prone to leaking oil... front seal is bad because if there's a groove worn not in the seal but the crank shaft, there's little a new seal will do... don't ask me how I know.
Other than that, expect to be nickeled-and-dimed. Ignition lock, door handle, AC leaks, that sort of thing... I got my money's worth for a beater van, but it sure is no Toyota...
Terry, tell Bill how many degrees north of 90 it got around here last week! Probably cooler in Miami!
Here is a hypothetical for the two of you:
Fresh rubber always raises the value on a trade, as you've pointed out a thousand times before. But does the type of tire have anything to do with that, and also, exactly how much of a difference does a new set of tires make on the value?
Why I ask? If I'm going to trade a car, I might want to weigh the cost of the new set against not bothering...i.e. is it worth bothering? And secondly, if I am inclined to replace the tires knowing I'm about to trade in, do I have any incentive not to put on the Kmart specials (as opposed to, say, Michelins)?
......... l.o.l.... A bunch. I love watching all these Yankee boy's sweating bullets at 10:30am, reminds me of FL. in February.
Anyway, good question.
Tires smires, their new .. and for the most part, they should get 20k++. So is it worth $645 to put a new set of Dunlaps, Michs, Cont's etc. .. or go down the street and put a new set Sears on for $200...?
Put the Sears on, save the money .. the dealer will up the value of your trade .. his new trade, has new tires and customers love new sneakers.
Of course, I'm not recommending putting a set zoo zoo tires on an Audi A8 or something like that ... l.o.l....

If the rubber is deep .. the paint and interior is 99 -- and it stands tall and needs -0- . Then on a trade maybe around $4,5/$5...
This is a great retail piece .. $7,950 and let someone torture you to $7/$7,5. Theres a lot of 4x4 buyers in NJ ...
Good luck ...
Terry.
Thank god you know trucks... I got no idea
The SL...

Leather, cloth, slider, wheels, dual air ..? what does this thing have ..?
Never the less, these vans are on the coooold side anyway, your talkin' maybe $2.

Ghulet -- Send them to their rooms .....!
Terry.
Let's see here .. tons of miles, no help there.
Right color for the area.. 4WD and an auto, big help. Plus all the "good stuff" ..
With some new sneakers and the vehicle lookin' cleeean, it will ring the bell in the low $13's, the miles are going to hurt Ya big time..
Good Luck ..

Whats it worth as a trade in ?
It is metallic paint with Alloy wheels and it has a tape deck

I'd say, No slider or auto... $9,500-10K up there across the block. So ask $12,900... but I think you can get $12K retail for it.
