...... Well, lets see .. it's kinda red, thats a plus -- and it is a late model 90ish vehicle.

What will really decide what the value could be is: what color the tie, Rush is wearing and what end of the dial he's barking through ..

Hmmmmm, I'm thinkin somewhere in and around $2 maybe $16 if the barometric pressure is correct and on Tuesday's could hit $29,000 if the Magnolia's are getting ready to blossom.

    I'm sure this will help .. :-))

    Terry.

..... The color is great for the area, and the miles are just super low ...

    This is a A6 Quattro ..?

No slider ..? No Leather ..?

Hmmmmm, let me ponder this one .. Ok, I'm done -- I have never seen one without leather .. and certainly not without a slider...

Hmmm, Gheeez ... well, here's a guess ( I just called 2 Audi dealers I know, one in Denver, the other in Richmond) They never have seen one either. Ok, their thinkin' $20/$21 even with the ultra low klicks ...

Bill, Sober up and tell us what you think ..

Now, the Trans Am has like --- Nooo miles, certainly the right color for the area .. and all loaded up, tops, chromes. If, this thing is a baby doll, showroom condition as in puuurrrffect, it will bring all the pesos.

This puppy should ring the bell at the right dealership. Ultra $14's are written all over the place..

    Maybe this helps ....

    Terry.

    Whoa.

An A6, A Quattro. NO Cowskin? No hole in roof for you to throw cigarette butts and beer cans out of?

What has this world come to?

I know! You are gonna look at the car, on the 31st day, of the 36 (or 39th) month, and sing the following:

"So Long, Fare Well, its off to auction hell"

Geez. I mean, no miles, nice shape, totally wrong equipment. Methinks this is, with real-world equipment (lots of little buttons to push, sunroof, CD, Leather, Radio, Air Conditioning, steering wheel, you know.. the basics..) a $23-24K car if its "all there" and does look new.

Now, your car is gonna get smacked. (Pulls out Bullwhip).

(Proceeds to bullwhip car to the tune of $3,500)

(Vodka is wearing off... Bill starts to Sober up)

It is, as Terry said, a $20,000 car. On a push. See, nice as it may be, I think you have a car here that anyone who sees it is gonna lowball. I dont see anyone stepping up on it.

So you are sending it back in, right? Dont buy it out... awful awful idea. Seriously.

What could I expect to get for my 96 Accord EX 2dr, standard transmission, gold color, a couple very minor dings, interior is in very good condition, 89k miles. I am in South Texas if location makes a difference.
  • ampeg66ampeg66 Member Posts: 4
Black, 160K, AT (42K on rebuild), AC, alloys, 3M tint, new AC compressor, good Michelins, Infinity speakers but no radio (could drop in a cheapie), never been damaged, runs good, drives straight and smooth. Hauls [non-permissible content removed] to Houston and back . Shows about as well as a car with this age and mileage can. Have maintenance records since purchase in 1998.

Interior: Gray cloth, overall very clean but does have 3 cig burns from previous owner. Rear power windows hang up a bit (common for this model), but they do work.

Exterior: No major problems, paint is pretty good, minor door dings but sheet metal is nice and straight, front bumper is pushed in about 3/4”, the shiny vinyl/plastic covering has come off one of the rear center door pillars.

Mechanical: Motor runs great, so far so good on rebuilt AT, needs PS leak repair. OK, I could play dumb on the leak, but really it needs a new rack. Dammit.

I’ve been to every car pricing site and guide I can find, and they are all on crack (except maybe the Black Book), giving an average trade-in value well over $2000, even with the miles! Black Book says the bank loan amount minus the mileage deduction is still $1700. I don’t *even* believe this.

So, maybe a few bucks at trade, try for private sale, keep as second vehicle?

Great board here, thanks for any input you can provide.

A ChicagoLand Infiniti dealer has offered me $2700 for my '95 Cirrus, white, 41,000 miles, condition as good as it gets for a '95 Cirrus. Edmunds.com tells me the TMV as a trade is $4170. Who's right?
  • petepie1petepie1 Member Posts: 25
    Hi,
What's your estimated trade-in (and retail) value of a 1990 Mercedes 190E 2.6, white w/ navy blue MB-Tex, A/C not working (but may be small fix, periodically has needed freon), 165,000 miles, all records, Mid-Atlantic (MD/VA). Thanks.
  • petepie1petepie1 Member Posts: 25
Forgot to add that it's in ok condition, the paint has some dark areas, and some chips & scratches. Inside in good shape, except that the vinyl on the door panels is separating in places.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Hmmm..

Say the scratches can be airbrushed for, say, $300... otherwise clean, good rubber, no accidents... Still, its Black in the tropics and its a ZX2...

    $5,000ish is where I think we at. I.E. $4,700-5300...

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Ok, so we have an Accord. That is good. A Gold Accord EX. That is good.

Coupes are OK... but its a sticky-shiftee and the miles are a tinge stiff.

Oh dear. Still we are gonna be $5,500ish to perhaps $6K if its just bangedup.com like new.

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Hmmm... Oodles of Miles and it sounds like it is showing its age. Miles like that generally make it a absolute wholesale piece.

See, as a trade its' worth 1,000-1,500 MAYBE.

But why not pop it in the local paper for $2,950, write the ad well, and grab the first $2700 you see?

    Hmmm..

    Trade? $3Kish.

    Retail? Should be worth $4,500.

I just sold its twin, retail (Yeah I let it go cheap..but...) in White/Grey that was just MINT for $5K with 134K

Those values are pretty much what I expected, thanks for your input.

A scenario for your evaluation: I go to my Austin, Texas Nissan dealer with the 94 Maxima as a trade-in, maybe $1500 or so cash to put down, and a blank check (pre-approved up to $15000).

I'd like to get into a 98-00 Max GXE. What sort of sticker price and what sort of deal am I looking to make here? How much would a dealer come off a $17000-18000 sticker on a vehicle with 30-40K? And what are "normal" dealer fees (doc, prep, whatever) to expect to pay here?

Thanks again for any input you can provide.

Thanks in advance for your help. I am preparing to buy a new car this summer and thought I would try this to get a good idea of the trade I could expect if I decide not to try and sell.

    1996 Chevrolet Lumina STD Sedan
    Automatic Transmission
    AM/FM Tape
    Power Doors, Windows, Driver's Seat
Good Running Shape, Northeast Car (Meaning Salt, small amount of rust starting on bottom of doors, I took this and the AC into account when I did a kbb.com value check, was almost equal to the TMV trade-in value, also was a smoker's car for a time, took this into account too)
    Needs New AC Compressor
Here's the kicker; by the time it would be traded it will have around 195,000 miles (best guess).
I am at the age (pretty young still) where I have seen plenty of friends sell their cars and the miles have be believing it may take some work to sell this, and even if I do, I'm not sure if the difference between what I would get and what I would get from the dealer is worth it.

So I know I may be looking at wholesale value for this, but what do you think is a realistic estimate of what I would be offered for this as a trade-in?

Thanks again for all of your help.

Ok, let's say that I only wanted to keep my Camaro until I take a bath on it, then I want to move on.

'00 Camaro SS, white with black leather, t-tops, auto, power everything, Monsoon CD.

12,000 miles, cleans up like an '02, tires are in good condition. Located in metro NY.

Thinking about trading for a C5. What am I looking at? Thanks in advance.

    Good Skippy! :)

$3,500-4K if its as nice as you say.

Wait, why not pop it in the paper for $6,500/bo and let someone beat you with a switch until you say OK to $5,700-5800?

If its super perfect with miles that lw, should be doable.

    Whoa...

98 GXE? Should be able to buy that for $12K-12,500ish with 40K on it.

    99s with 35K? $13,500ish.

    00s with 30K? $16,500ish.

    Ouch.

THat would be a real tough private sale. As a trade though.. $1,000 on a good day I am afraid. No AC and astronomical miles... :(

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Hmm...

Low $19Ks I think... if its that nice. Maybe $19,500.

    Glad to help!

    Write it like this:

1995 Chrysler Cirrus LXi. Loaded. Immaculate condition, No accidents, only 41K carefully maintained miles. A must see! Priced to sell at $6,500/bo

Try that... Accentuate the positives as they say.

I have a 1997 Mercedes C230 with 18,500 miles. I was hoping to trade it in, but am considering selling it myself. It is midnight blue with parchment MBTex interior. It has always been garaged and is in perfect condition with the exception of two small door dings from other cars in the garage. I was offered $15,000 at one Mercedes dealer, where another 1997 C230 (with 39,000 miles) was on the lot for $23,000! For $7,000 - $8,000 difference I should try to sell it myself, right?
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Hmmm...

Real Money? $15,500-16K on your car. Ordinarially more.. but Midnight Blue isnt a great color for those. Yes, I think it looks nice, but Black, White, Smoke and Brilliant Silvers will all do more $$.

Retail? If you can get $23K I have a job for you! Reality is, there isnt that kind of spread, as a rule, in cars like these. But on a Merc with ultra-low miles, you can be a tad greedy.

Ask $19,900 and take $18,500 or ideally better. I think you can get $19K out of it. Seriously.

That $23K asking price was nutto.

Wow! You even wrote the ad for me!
Thanks, Bill. I'll let you know what happens with the Cirrus.
I guess one question always leads to another...so here it is!
In the edmunds.com article "auto trade in value" (http://www.edmunds.com/advice/buying/articles/48934/article.html) the terms "buying right" and "to buy the car right" are used several times.
Perhaps I didn't "buy right" with my '95 Cirrus. With $35,000 to $40,000 to spend on a new 4-door sedan, can you give me some suggestions about the 4 or 5 most "right" buys I could make for that money. I need something with good leg room in the rear seats.
    Thanks again for your help.
Good Skippy :) or Bad Skippy:( ????

    Good to do yer research!

    First,

Look used. You got a HUGE pile o Cash to spend. I think you should lookused, say, 2000-2001 low miles.

    Here's what you can swing:

2000 Jaguar XJ8L maybe even a Vanden Plas... yeah. a Vanden Plas too for $40K.
    2000 Mercedes E320 maybe a 99-00 E430
    etc...

What do you LIKE first? We'll do resale later.

Need a trade in value for a '98 Pontiac TranSport Montana Extended Length with 42,000 miles, red. Rear air, CD, roof rack, power driver seat, cruise, PW, PL, alloys, privacy glass. Very good condition inside and out, Edmunds says 11,000 + but that seems a tad high to me. Are they close? Wife has her eye on a Toyota Highlander. Thanks in advance for your help. We're in Southern California.
  • skippy59skippy59 Member Posts: 7
Whoa! An XJ8L!! I wasn't even thinking Jaguar, but I like it.
Okay, since you asked what I like, I'll throw out a few ideas. BMW 540...maybe 740???, Merc E320/430 would be fine. Audi A8?????
How about new? Anthing that'll really hold its value in my price range? The thing that started all this is that I was looking at the Infiniti G35.
    Thanks for your replies---
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
....seems like a lotta car for the $, but they don't seem to be holding their value too well, IMO (again, I'm not a dealer, but I'm constantly looking at cars on the internet, etc.). Also, the A8 is nearing the end of its life cycle, so consider that as well.

Personally, for that money, I would LOVE a 740iL ($40k will likely buy, what Bill, about a '98, maybe a '99?).
  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
    I'd buy:
    (1) 740i Sport
    (2) E430
    (3) XJR

I'm looking for a price on an original Vauxhall, blue, about 15k miles, in NJ. Not sure of the year. excellent condition (estate sale)
Guy down the street is looking to get it out of his garage to settle the estate. He said he won't take less than $1200 for it. Is that too much?
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
Are you TRYING to get Bill to jump out of his seat? LOL.
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Nah - Bill would never even consider this Vauxhall. A unit worthy of his attention has to have been sitting for 30 years out on a farm in nothern Saskatchewan with most of the parts in cardboard boxes.

I am considering selling a 98 740iL, 23K miles, BMW certified through Oct 2004, overall very good condition, some very minor nicks on the paintwork. Navy blue with sand interior (popular color in this area). Any idea what I can expect? I also put a similar post on the BMW 7 board. Many thanks.

    Afew weeks ago I wrote:

Please advise on trade in value on 96 Mazda Protege LX, auto, pw, p.locks, am/fm cassette, michelin tires w/7,000miles, "sparkle green mica", AZ car (NO RUST) clean car, had some minor body work (RF fender replaced..paint matches) interior clean, non smoking car, glass was tinted in AZ, I understand that front door glass needs to be UNtinted in MI??? 46,000 miles being traded-in in Detroit area on a new 2002 (or 1 year old) Protege LX. Also realistic purchase price on 2001 LX auto 1.6L no moonnroof or alloy wheels, 13,000 miles, seabreeze (light green?). THANKS!

    Your reply:
If it's as nice as you say it is, then this is a $3,500 vehicle, could creep to $3,7/$3,8 if it's perfect. (if not, start deducting)

We traded the 96 for a new 2002 LX, got $4500 for the 96 against $100 over invoice PLUS $2000 in rebates on the new one. Thanks for the great service guys!

Bill, thanks for the info on the 190E. Now I have another question, I'm thinking of replacing it with a Volvo. Where do you think the best deals are: 1999 or 2000 S70, 2000 S80, or 2001 S60? The S80's have horrible reliability records for 1999. What would be a reasonable price for a 2000 S70 GLT, 30K miles, silver, mid-atlantic area (dealer is asking $24K)? Finally, I've noticed that a lot of the newer cars on the lots came from auction (checked carfax). Is that a problem? Do dealers send only the dregs to auction, or is that now the way dealers are picking up most of their used cars? And, when carfax lists a car as sold at auction as a fleet vehicle (but no commercial title), does that mean it was a loaner or salesman's car? Thanks for all your help

    I have a 1998 Audi A4 Avant wagon.
It has heated seats, cd changer, alloy wheels, moonroof... I think all options except leather and quattro. It has 36,500 miles, and is green with a tan interior. I would say that it is in excellent condition, very clean in and out. What can I expect for this car in trade? Will I get more if I trade it at one type of dealer versus another?
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... If it's super nice, super clean, new sneakers, looks 01, then that's a big help .... the low miles, that's another big winner.

Depending on where you live -- No Quattro .. no ticky, no washy, no help. The Quattro's are what the folks want -- unless your waaay down south. Your biggest savior here is .. it's a Avant, wagons are back in full stride.

You should see around the mid $15's or so on this puppy, if it was a Quattro .. you would be on the right side of the $18's.

Unless you are dealing with Jethro Motors .. a GOOD dealer will know some outlets to drop this vehicle, it sounds nice.

Good luck .. and let us know.

    Terry.
