I think that Truck, wholesale, to the right buyer is about $23,000 to perhaps as high as $24,000 on a good day, but that's "all the money to the moon".
Retail? Figure he ought to easily be able to get $26,000 out of it. Werent those only like $30K new??
Bill
I have only seen 3 of these "Fat Daddy trucks....."
And all 3.. brought all the money...I'm assuming you have the glass running boards and power rear window..tow pack
It has no miles..and no snow....if it's as nice as you say it is ...( sounds like it's in the wrapper ).. Whatever dealer you may go to will hit that truck in and around that..$23,000 to that $24,000 ish+ figure - real money - .."maybe" a hair more...
I would assume...you might be trading it on the Z3..... Import dealers don't much like those manley trucks, so I'm quite sure they will have their most experienced person available to check it out.....
Street side...I'm thinking (-remember- you need the right buyer) you can ask..$27,000 ish...and negotiate down ...depending on your area.....
So, Yeee HA'....give it a whirl..
Terry.
Yeah, the BMW dealer didn't love the truck but they were a little better than the others he had look at the truck (Nissan and Mazda--they both had used coupes on their lots). I'm not certain, but I think BMW offered him around $22k or $23k on a trade. Maybe a little light, but I guess not too bad. He had the truck for sale a while ago at $28900 but he wasn't real motivated to sell it and not much happened. Now, though, he's ready to move. He is planning on listing it for $25k to get a quick sale.
I did some research by looking at the F-150 and SVT enthusiast Web sites to see their classifieds and I think he's pretty aggressive at that price. Problem is, he's only got about 2 weeks to sell the thing (based on when his Bimmer coupe is supposed to arrive). I'm wondering if he might be able to move it quickly at $26k; maybe 4-5 days at $26k OBO then drop it to $25k for the next week? I don't want to have him risk the difference between trade and private party, but I don't want him to leave money on the table if $26k is as good a number for a private sale as I think it is. If you only had 10 days (let's tighten it up for fun, since I'm not sure of the exact timing), what would you do?
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
Hope this info helps you.
What are the current auction prices, and what can I expect for a Private Party sale of:
1998 Acura Integra GS - Dark Green - Auto - Leather - Spoiler - 40,000 miles. No paint work or accidents.
I am in Tampa, FL.
Clean 95 Mazda Millenia S - Black w/ Tan Interior
Loaded w/ everything except heated seats. Runs great, though it needs new front axles (or something like that - repair to cost consumer $550) Also needs new windshield ($120 - if I do that myself will I get it back in the trade?)
130,000 miles
Any thoughts from the experts? I'm in Orange County, CA.
Also, how thoroughly do they really check them over. The first guy that looked at it got in, turned on the engine, checked the windows, looked over the engine briefly, but nothing else major.
Thank you very much for your help,
Derek
If he wants $25K... and the dealer will go to $23K (Which it's worth) He ought to trade it assuming you live in a state where you get a trade-in tax credit
Think aboot it....
At 6%... $23K trade, $1,500 tax credit = $24,500 versus another $500 for going through the aggravation of selling it yourself and getting jerked around...
What think you?

Even so... It strikes me as about a $2,500-3,000 car or so with the miles and mechanical issues.
When I appraise a car, here's how I look at it:
First I walk around it.. try to look for damage or obvious paintwork as well as condition. Then I open every openable panel (Doors, Trunk, Hood) and feel all the edges of all the panels to spot paintwork. If I also dont feel it but suspect something I start looking closely. I also look for VIN Tags on body panels if the car has them.
Then I go inside... Is it a smoker's car? How's the leather? Wood? (Wood can be hellishly expensive to fix if chewed up or cracked... you can sometimes see this on a 3-4 year old car.. especially here in FL). Does the AC Work? How does it run? Do all the power acessories work?
Then It gets rtoad tested around the block. I check for CV Joint problems, Steering, brakes, etc..
So maybe I spend an extra 5 mins per car.. but I VERY VERY Rarely get burned by overallowing a car with Bad AC or Blown axles.
Bill
My thought is that if I sold it to a private party I could get the low-side of what the public uses for info (KBB/Edmunds private party sales pricing), In this example I used edmunds. I could argue after the repairs that it would be excellent, but I'll call it "Clean" to be safe. With that, the price a private party would see would be roughly $8,579. Knowing the repairs are roughly $1,000 - $1,500, that number comes to $7,000 on the low side (again, after repairing all defects). The difference between that number and the trade in is $4K...let's say that somebody were to negotiate me down to $7,579...that's still 3K difference AND twice what you're offering me. Please do tell.
Not trying to argue, just trying to get your thoughts. Locally a dealer is askinhg 14K for a Millenia S with 64K miles.
Thanks,
Derek
I would sell it myself. Heck, I'd pesonally put it on eBay. I have my 94 J30 with 141K on the clock on there right now and the bidding is at $5,600. The car also has a few cosmetic issues so I am happy. I was in the $3200-3500 range from wholesalers.
So, for $50 in listing fees.. I be happy
If I were you, I'd fix the car before you tried to sell it. Shop around for the axles.. Some companies can do remans for like $185 or so a side installed. And the Windsheild.. shop for that too, sometimes you can get em real cheap.
As far as valuations go.. If you're looking at KBB trade-in, I'd rate the car as fair. Good or Excellent is simply an overclassification on a car with miles like that. And it follows Black Book data. Take a 97 BMW 328i. One with 65K on it is a "rough" book car, no matter how nice, the 50K mile one is " average book" and the 30K mile one is "clean book"
I based my appraisal on what they're doing at auction... it's just not a car most dealers would want. The miles are real high and it needs a bit of recon work. And remember, it's a high mileage supercharged car. 95 S's with 120-140K seem to be in the $2,800-4K range. I was a bit conservaive as the car has problems. Now, when we look at the cars with, say, 55K-68K miles or so on them, they're doing $7,500-9,000 wholesale. So $14K seems like a pretty optimistic price for that car. I'd say it's worth $8,000 or so wholesale. Bear in mind, we rarely get full KBB retail for cars. If I did, I'd double my salary
So I'd say that a fair retail price for your car is $6,000-7,000 depending on condition. I assumed a $3,500 or so wholesale if it's clean and all there, so $2,500 as it sits. Figure that a dealer wants to make $2K or so on a used car after expenses.. so $6K seems fair. If I retailed that car, I'd take it in for $2,500, spend about $850 or so in recon, another $150 in detailing.. perhaps some touch-up assuming the tires and all are OK..etc.. And I'd put it in the paper for $5995.
Hope this helps... if I was off target (Im real tired..lol) let me know!
Bill
Thank you.
So, I think I'll go ahead and have him list at $25k and stress the importance of doing the paperwork at the dealer for the trade-in credit.
Thanks again for your help.
Good Luck
Terry.
but it is a 4 cyl.....and a manual transmission ...-- If I may recommend something --- On your next purchase ..car or truck..always try to get the bigger engine...and especially ..Automatic
I hope this helps
Terry.
For the new car, a 2001 Accord EX sedan, 4-cyl, auto, we are at 150 over invoice (20450).
Thanks everyone!
Paul
Great little cars...........and thank goodness..it's a automatic
..2dr..and if the tires are real good..and if the vehicle looks sharp....
Based on what you are saying .....the vehicle should be worth..somewhere in and around that $11,500 to $12,500 range - real money -
on the retail side..depending on the area..Im guessing $13,500-$14,500 more or less.....
I hope this helps....
Terry.
Still, a Millenia is a lot of car for the money for the person who is willing to take a chance.
Thanks!
Sam
and figure it, as any color but purple....with the A wheels..and tires with a spoiler... you are going to be in that $16,000 to $17,000 figure ...if it's super clean, more towards..$17,000...it's a little stiff in miles...but it really depends on your area...
I hope this helps
Terry.
I pegged the Integra at $12K down here...
And, Bikerguy, glad we were able to help!
As far as that 99 EX V6 (Coupe you said....right?) I could use a bit more info...
Color combo and Region would help. A Black on Black coupe is a dog in Florida, while it's very desireable in Chicago or NY City.
Hope this helps!
Bill
I'm thinking about buying a 2dr Blazer if anyone has any comments or ideas for me.
GM is going to discontinue that Body Style.
If you do want one.. I'd buy a 2-year old one (The smartest way to buy a domestic anyways IMHO) so you dont get killed in depreciation.
Bill
With this in mind, maybe you could steal one. Do think about the resale down the road.
Had to roll negative equity from a Neon into the loan.
Talk about Buried For Life..........
With rebates, a new one with the options I'm looking for should be around 17172, according to Edmonds. I know the 16k price for the used one wasn't the "real" price but pricing used cars while at the dealership is difficult when trying to figure out what the options are worth, mileage, etc.
What would be a good ball park price for a one to two year old blazer? Either 2d or 4d. Automatic, with say the basics on it, power windows and locks etc.
At least he sorta knew he was doing it to himself.. I hope...
Bill
I figure a 30K mile 99 ought to be buyable for about $17,500 or so... If you can get a New one for within $2K or so of that... Heck.. go new...
But I went and looked up a 2-door like that... $15-16K ought to be doable on the retail level for one with decent miles so I'd still say to go new...
Not the norm for a Chevy tho!
Bill
I recall talking to him about the Neon. I told him to look at a new Civic, like a LX sedan, silver, auto, nice and reliable and affordable. Gwinnett Place Honda will probably sell it to him at invoice. Nope, he wants an SUV.
When I saw it I thought "oh no! Neon part 2"
He's a nice guy. Just hasn't experienced the Brilliance of Bill like all of us in here.
Terry.
On a side note. I noticed a new 2000 GMC Jimmy in front of the GMC Dealership last night with the options I'm looking for on the 2001 Blazer. (Unfortunately it's not the color I'm looking for) The Sticker Price is, of course, higher than what would be on a 2001 Blazer because the Jimmy is the luxury version (rolls eyes). However, it is a 2000, so I was wondering just how bad a dealership would want to get rid of it? I couldn't find, nor did I expect to find any rebates listed on-line. So what would be the best way to haggle for it, and how much, it any, do you think I could expect the dealer to come down.
The car is a manual, AWD, L model with power steering, windows, door locks, and brakes. New tires and suspension, newly tuned up. Air conditioning. 97,000 miles. Body and engine good. It's clean. I asked $4650. Is that too much?
Thanks for any wisdom.
Diane
Thanks so much for the info! Looks like I will be holding on to it for a while longer. I still owe 19,900
And he wont until February of 2006!
Bill
Wait. I could see if I can find out maybe.....
Bill
$1,000? Sheesh... If it's clean, not rusty and free of previous accident damage it's a $2,000-2,500 car in the right market. It's a $1,000-1,500 car here in Orlando, but it's good merchandise in New England (Where they bring the most money).
As far as your asking price... seems ok to me. If all else fails.. reduce it to $4,250 or $3,900/bo and try it from there... But I do think that if it's a nice car that $1,000 in the snowbelt is light.
Bill
Well, you could prolly get $19,900 or thereabouts retail for it.. perhaps more even...
Wholesale on it, Like Terry said, Is floating around the $16,500-17,500 range. It is a desireable car, and in a good color combo, particularly for your market... even if the miles are highish.
I'll go a bit higher than Terry as they seem to be stronger than normal in the southwest...
But even so, I'd keep it if I were you. It's a nice car!
Bill
Bill (who is probably tired of advising me) and Terry are about to become my new best friends. I need to really buy a car now, since I just sold my old one. A 1995 mercury Mystiques LS V6/5 speed, nice shape and only 48K miles. Offered about $3,300 on a trade (and that was grudingly) for this "saleproof" car. Put it in the paper, first looker loved it, gave me the asking price 5,000).
Now I'm sorry I missed out on some of my recent finds (missed on the low miles Volvo S70 by one day).
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
I think a '99 TL was discussed a few posts back. Seem to recall $23,000 was a strong price for that. I can actually get a new 2001 for about $26,300, if that factors into the equation.
Last one: 1998 BMW 528i (5-speed), miles in the 30s for $28,500 (not a CPO car).
Of the 2 '98s, whats the best bet to hold its value since I will probably sell in 2-3 years for some new toy?
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
Terry.
Well my friend...Acura's are very strong right now - and I don't think that will change for a while --- even the clean 95 and 96's can pull out of the book ( on any given day ).....and I have seen few run lately....so this will give you some 'idears"
I just got back from the Manheim in Pa ...which is the largest.....3500 imports and about 8500 Domestics...that's a bunch...it was a long day...l..o..l.......
But anyway, a 1998 Acura 3.2TL low in miles..30 ish, clean-look's new, needs nothing ( that's the only way I buy them )..you will be in that $18,000 ish to that $19,000 ish range...
The 99's will be in that ( no nav )...$20,000 ish to $21,000 ish figure....and the 2000's will yank close to new.... I just saw a bunch ( 15 ) 7,000 to 10,000 miles...they were new...except for the miles....$23,000/$24,000 ish..some with nav's.....
Ok, Bimmer land.......525i, with a meat clever..l..o..l..In my humble opinion....I would go with the Acura - only because you will have this vehicle for a short time....and in re-sale -- 5 - speeds are hard to sell ....your market dwindles from.. let's say, from the size of a refridgerator to the size of a shoe box...age buyers are very reflective in that purchase....so for what it's worth.......But, as I always say -- Buy and drive what you like......
Hopefully, this is helpful..
Terry.
Just to clarify, your 18-19ish price for a '98, is that what they pulled at the auction, or what I can get one for? Assuming thats the auction figure, is a reasonable retail (all spiffed up) in the 20-21 range?
Prices in Autotrader, etc are all over the board, especially when you get some private sales in there. Acura dealers in particular have a high ambitions. I assume the mild redesign coming in May (as a 2002) might push prices down a little?
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
ps..That would be a reasonable retail...I don't feel a body change is really going to harm Acura's in any way....Like, I had mentioned before Clean 95's and 96's are pulling very strong...and have been for some time.......so, all I can do is just watch
Terry.
Terry.
Given that, my question is: am I better off leasing if I have to have a 5-speed? i.e. are there penalties in the residuals for manual transmissions? I leased a BMW 3-series and I think I asked the question at the time and I got the response that there wasn't a penalty for a manual tranny and the only difference was that it lowered the purchase price by ~$1300. Does the same apply to options such as no sunroof and leatherette instead of leather? I guess my point is that the manufacturer wouldn't lower residual because that would imply that they are offering something less desirable?
How can I explain myself? OK, I have a Miata. In MY2000, they sold a very small number of cars in a color called Evolution Orange (they are horrible). Any sane person buying a used Miata would knock the car down for being Evo Orange. However, had I lost my mind and leased one of them, the residual would have been identical on this ugly color as on a normal color. Does leasing insulate you more from mass-market tastes?
Let me know if this is unclear and I'll try to explain myself better. I basically just want to know if I should always look at leasing if I want to drive more enthusiast-type configurations of cars (i.e. 5-speed, don't care about sunroof or leather or big subwoofer...). Thanks again!
I have an order in for a new Passat wagon. Unfortunately with VW's allocation system I have to wait a while to get what I want or pay for the Luxury package (sunroof and alloys). I may go for it but I dislike the wheels and hate paying for stuff I don't want. I wanted the 16" wheels but cannot afford a GLX and don't want power seats.
Anyway I can get a 1.8T 4cyl w/o the lux package and the price jump to a V6 is significant ($2500).
My questions is what will the V6 return on resale? When I compare at kbb.com the difference on a 99 is about $800 but on Edmonds it's about $2100.
Also as an alternative to this car what do you guys think of a approx 2 yr old Audi A6 Avant or Volvo V70 Turbo?
A Gls wagon -2000 - in the 4 cyl is running around that $18,000 + figure...that's strong....and the 6 cyl wagons are running around that $20,000 + figure....So in this case....I guess what you pay for, is what you get....they are both very strong at the auctions...and personally I love VW's........I bought my nephew a 99 Passat GLX V6...and I love it ...( I mean, he loves it )....
And your second choices are great...I have been a Volvo person for a long time...and the Audi's I love...Even though they are a VW in disguise..l..o..l...........
Like I always say -- Buy and drive what you like.....
Maybe this help's ..
Terry.
for example, in my town there are virtually no used '98-'99 Monte Carlos for sale in the ads. However, in another city 100 miles from here, there are at least a couple dozen at various dealerships, and their asking prices seem to be a little higher than when there was one advertised here. So does that mean that there is good action in my model over there, or does it mean that market is swamped and I'd never sell mine there?
