I brought my 03 EX-V6 in for its first service interval (3750 miles). Issues that I asked to have them look at:

    Driver's Window Rattle
    Glovebox Rattle
Power seats "clunking" at end of travel
    Squeaking Door hinges

These guys went through a lot of trouble trying to solve interior panel rattles, unfortunatly, they didn't fix either of them. The window rattle isn't a huge deal cause all I do is tap the window down button to take the pressure off the seal to stop it.

The glove box is scheduled to be replaced anyways cause when I took delivery, there was a big scratch across the front. The dealer said they would replace that at a later date before I signed the papers. Hopefully that will fix the rattle.

I was told the power seats operated just fine. Lately it hasn't been as choppy and it may have been just breaking in. The door hinges were part of maintainence schedule A anyways, so that was taken care of.

I was a little scared bringing my car in for minor problems. When I went through this with my Pontiac 2 years ago, the service department was very rude and I hated having to deal with them. This Honda service department was beyond pleasent and tried very hard, from what I saw, to please a picky customer. I look forward to doing more business with them.

On a side note: I drove a 2001 Ford Taurus while my car was in the shop....man that really makes you appriciate all the accord has to offer!

Two places you might want to look at:
    (a) the little center cubbyhole door (the one you push down on to release... you know the one) rattles based on fit n finish. No solution yet that I have found, but opening the door stops the rattle.
    (b) there is apparently a small metal bar of some sort just to the driver's right of the glovebox, between it and the door (but behind the dash plastic) that my local service center says they have fixed a few times and gets rid of the customer "dashboard rattle" complaint. I have not yet had this fixed, as the service center is constantly booked solid (2 week advance for an oil change!).

Neither rattle is constant, and seems to be more road condition/temperature dependent.

is there a way to just stop the cd while it is playing? if one changes to radio and comes back to cd, it picks up from where it left off. i read the owners manual and didnt really find anything. am i missing somthing? or, is the only way to power off the system.
  • seafseaf Member Posts: 339
I believe the cd player stops when you're in radio, and it starts up again where it left of because it remembers the exact track and position (I don't think it runs continuously in the background while you're in radio).

does anyone know what speed an '03 v6 coupe with automatic is limited to? just wondering as i had mine up to 120 mph today!! she would have gone further, i think, but i chickened out for fear of getting my license yanked...!
  • canddmeyercanddmeyer Member Posts: 410
Try Dunn's in Mountain View. I used them in the 80's & they did fantastic work.
  • robertsmxrobertsmx Member Posts: 5,525
Accord V6 should be capable of going past 140 mph (like TL).
  • tlaurotlauro Member Posts: 504
03 V6's are computer limited to 130mph. Not drag limited, thus if the computer could be reprogramed, I'm sure the V6's would go higher.

I know this isn't what you asked... but I'll share anyway. Oh, and I'll probably get flamed for this too!

A few days after I got my new 4-cyl I hit the local turnpike in KS where there's a long flat straightaway and got the car easily up to 140. Didn't want to go any faster, but the car did it. Oh, and my Garmin Streetpilot GPS recorded it for me.

    FYI
  • redselredsel Member Posts: 19
In regard to top speed of 03` Accord V-6, on one exciting venture I saw 134 mph for a few miles before getting nervous and letting off; within seconds I spotted an Officer of the Law who had spotted me first. Was tagged at 98 mph, ouch! 100 seems like about 70. The Officer had no sense of humor.

I remember the first time I got pulled over, I was doing 41 in a 25....boy I was scared...and when I saw the ticket I nearly cried...and I was only driving a 1991 Honda Accord EX with the sad 2.2L engine.
  • filodfilod Member Posts: 189
Most car magazines report that it is electronically limited to 130 mph.
  • filodfilod Member Posts: 189
Can someone please explain what this means? So when you do not hit 6250 rpm, car has less than 240 hp? Thank you.
  • tlaurotlauro Member Posts: 504
what that mean is that at lower RPM's your V6 isn't pushing 240hp....it's not needed. however, if you push the rpm's to the 6250 mark, that's when the car is generating that much horsepower.

"Can someone please explain what this means? So when you do not hit 6250 rpm, car has less than 240 hp? Thank you. "
  • snowfulsnowful Member Posts: 53
Several people here have mentioned comments about having "power seats." On the EX V6, isn't only one seat power?
  • mikek37mikek37 Member Posts: 411
    Yes both seats are power.
  • fryingbolognafryingbologna Member Posts: 85
Both front seats are powered... drivers 8-way, passenger 4-way.
  • ian2ian2 Member Posts: 168
Horsepower is a product of torque and rpm. So if you have a flat torque curve, the higher the rpm, the higher the HP you get. Most engines lose torque as the rpm goes up near the red-line. VTEC improves high-end toque by altering timing and cam profile; thus increase the maximum HP. You cannot get as much torque from the 3L engine as Altima's 3.5, so in order to get the same HP, the RPM must be higher.
  • emaleemale Member Posts: 1,380
that stinks, only one seat (driver's) is powered on the ex v6 coupe. plus the coupe costs just as much as the sedan...what gives?
  • snowfulsnowful Member Posts: 53
I guess I should have included coupe when I asked about the power seats. I don't get why my coupe only has one power seat and the sedan has 2. On any car, I'd think you'd want the front 2 seats to "match."
  • mikek37mikek37 Member Posts: 411
Really? Wow, I didnt know the coupe only had one power seat. Thats strange, I thought they both had power seats?

Another thing I dont understand is the rear defroster. The website states that there is a timer, but the defroster on my sedan nevers goes off, anyone else notice this. Whats going on with that?
  • tlaurotlauro Member Posts: 504
I think the rear defrost stays on consistantly if you're above a certain speed...like on the highway...but if you're in stop and go traffic, it shuts off.

That's how some other cars I've had worked out anyway. Not really sure as I don't use it that often except in the winter.
  • pj23pj23 Member Posts: 158
The previous generation was like that too. I just assumed it had something to do with the coupe passenger seat needing to have the release mechanism to allow entry/exit into and out of the backseat.

What bothered me more in my '02 coupe was the fact that every time someone did release the passenger seat was returned it didn't assume the position it was in before being released. That was truly annoying.
  • emaleemale Member Posts: 1,380
i don't think the rear defroster has any timer on it whatsoever. this past spring mine was on for an hour and never shut off while driving around town...
  • ian2ian2 Member Posts: 168
The CL has power passenger seat and it's a hassle to wait for the seat to tilt and move forward. I'd rather have it without power if access to rear seats is frequently required.

THis morning a neighbor asked me to look at her car-said something had exploded. White powder the consistency of baby powder was everywhere. The "explosion" occured in the center console storage cavity, blowing the door open, cassettes out of the carrier and depositing a bunch of powder all over the front of the vehicle. There was a particularly large impact area on the drivers side window-on the inside. The car is kept locked and we could not find any hint of packaging or remnants of a device. She is reluctant to get the police involved.

It looks like a prank to me-she has a cute 18 yo daughter. Is anyone aware of a device that would leave this type of residue.

It exploded during the night with no one in the locked vehicle. Yeah it is off subject but where would u post a question like this????

  • mikek37mikek37 Member Posts: 411
I have a feeling the car may have been open already and then the culprit may have sprayed a fire exstinguisher in the car. Thats my only guess, might be an airbag too. Thats strange, but she should definitely call the police.
  • robertsmxrobertsmx Member Posts: 5,525
It can't be an airbag if it is a console! Sounds more like a prank to me. Or something may have been stored in the storage bin that had the potential to explode in excess heat (assuming the car was locked in hot weather outside).
  • bburton3bburton3 Member Posts: 185
Turns out cute daughter works at a drag strip-suspect someone there put some kind of device in the center storage console. My first thoughts were air bag also but it became obvious something was placed in the center storage console. What ever it was hit the driver side window with a lot of force right at face level. If this thing had gone off while someone was driving-not good. Also the white powder is still all over the place. Looks like about a half pound of talc. It definately was an explosion-not big but enough to blow open the storage box and spray the stuff everywhere. The explosion happened when the car was locked with alarm overnight. Will ask my nephew who frequents the same drag strip if he knows what kind of device caused this mess. Dangerous IMHO.

This has been a week of car shopping under the radar. Wife hates to do it, but it is necessary sometimes.

Earlier this week I drove an Audi A4 Avant. Decent car, but was SO surprised at the things that were broken on it. Drove OK, not exceptional.

Today I took my car in for an oil change and stopped to drive a Passat. Liked it a lot, drove well, and quiet.

The surprise was the LX V6 sedan I drove. The quality was head and shoulders above the Audi. The material that was used on the inside was far superior to the Audi, and the tactile aspect of the switchgear was even better than the Passat. The driving experience was the same. Smooth, quiet, fast, and I know what others have said about the Accord's handling, but I found it to be very good. It drove better by far than the Audi or the VW.

I will be very happy with the Accord.

Considering an '03 Accord LX V6 or Camry LE V6 w/5spd Auto. Which car will deliver the best performance over the long run. My driving is mixed city/hwy: 50/50. Which vehicle will be the lowest total cost of maint. and be most rewarding to own over estimated 5 year 125k mile planned ownership. I have heard pro's and con's for both and need input from previous owners.

any one have any experiance with some of the wheel cleaner sprays that remove brake dust etc.?

I bought Maguire's wheel cleaner, but it says do not use on unpolished aluminum wheels. would this not be good for my 03 honda ex-v6 wheels?
  • blackexv6blackexv6 Member Posts: 503
I own both a Camry and '03 Accord. Bottom line is the ride. Make sure you test drive the cars on routes you will drive every day. What i mean is if the roads near your house are rough and the dealer takes you on a new paved highway the experience will be different especially with the Accord. The Accord has a stiff ride and you will feel every imperfection in the road. Still a great car and will last forever with excellent resale value. The Camry is a very smooth ride with little road noise. My suggestion is to drive both and decide. I would consider the usage it is going to get. We use the Camry for trips and hauling passengers because of its comfortable ride and roominess. The accord sedan is for short distances with some extra fun with the 240HP V6. Can't lose with either car.

Anyone have any hint of what changes will come with the 2004 Accord? and when will it be available? The 2003 is very nice but I'm guessing that the 2004 will have even more goodies.
    Thanks
  • robertsmxrobertsmx Member Posts: 5,525
Based on Intellichoice reports, Accord has lower long-term maintenanance costs than Camry (for that matter almost any car). But this area has too many variables.

However, regarding which of the two will be more rewarding to own and drive depends on your personal definition of 'rewarding'. I drive Accord and will get another over Camry because Accord is more rewarding car to drive (to me). The Camry feels more like a bouncing box to me. I've never been a fan of cars that isolate the driver too much and appear to float over bumps instead of having the chassis buttoned down.

And then, you will find people who will call Accord's ride stiff compared to Camry something they might not like.

Depending on which of the two fits your needs, neither is going to disappoint you. This is not unlike picking the firmness of a mattress. Some like it soft (Camry), some firm (a typical sport sedan), and some with firmness and a softer pillowtop (Accord).
  • winbrowinbro Member Posts: 235
from all I see, not much change at all, new green color to replace 03 green color. only minor other changes more like "tweaking the product" and from what I hear, no new goodies like lighted steering wheel controls etc. that's why I went for a late in the production year 03 and before y/e clearance so I could get the model & color I wanted. probably paid $300-400 more than others I see here but I did not want to wait. my Olds intrigue was begetting more lemons as the years went by.
  • talon95talon95 Member Posts: 1,110
In addition to what Winbro said, the other sorta big news is the wider availability of side curtain airbags. They'll be available on EX 4s and LX V6s... I don't know if they'll be standard or optional. With the 2003 model, they're available only as standard equipment on the EX V6.
  • gee35coupegee35coupe Member Posts: 3,387
I agree with the sentiment it boils down to ride tuning. I enjoy driving both cars. The Camry isn't as "floaty" as some people describe under normal driving conditions. In fact I find it's ride very controlled under legal driving conditions.
  • accordanceaccordance Member Posts: 6
As a recent owner of both there are some subtle differences. First a little history...our last cars were both 1992's...her car was a Corolla which we sold with 134k miles in November 02' to scoop up a good deal on a one year old 01'EX (w/cloth). I had a Miata which truly taught me everything I know about performance driving...and provided carefree trusty service and was sold with 207k miles after 50+ autocross, and half-a-dozen track days...and still got $4500 for her with lots of extras including a hardtop. I never thought I would ever be driving an automatic...since I was raised on stick shifts.. (4spd 77' Datsun B-210...and a 86'Civic hatchback)...but the 01' tranny grade-logic is really intelligent...and did the thinking for me...up hills...down hills...in quick passing situations etc. With a 125mi/day commute and her 60mi/day commute the Accords were the answer. Smooth, fast, quite, economical, safe...and fairly stealthy. We were so impressed with the 01' that we scored for $14.3k with 29k miles and still 2 years on the warr. that I decided it was time to get less car focused and drop the Miata...lifestyle...club runs and all...and worry about they personal health rather then the next twisty mountain blast and drive-n-dine run. Instead I just wanted to get to and from work peacefully with a minimum amount of stress, and get out of cars to get into more bike riding, hikings...swimming etc. instead of doing oil changes...installing the latest carbon metallic brake pads, or shopping for more useless auto goodies online. Making the transformation wasn't hard...the Accord still offered plenty of driving interest with the occasional burst of excitement...like surprising a so-called "sports car" at the end of freeway off ramp clover leaf...thanks Mazda. Since the 01' was such a competent machine we knew the 03' would be a sure thing. At first we were hyped about the Element and had a loaded one on order...cross shopped the Mazda6 (had to...Miata blues I guess), and took a long hard look at the Civic Hybrid. In the end the Accord 4 banger won across the board, the leather and navi were just icing on the v-tec cake. Well I have to say driving the 01' vs the 03' is like going from the 92' Corolla to the 01'Accord...it just feels that much better. The 01' is no slouch and I drive it daily (current at 52k miles) to keep the miles of the 03' (currently 13.5k miles) The 01' can return 31-32mpg and the 03' is between 28-31 with a high of the as advertised 33 mpg...as the motor breaks in I expect a better average. Range wise I can wring the 01' out to 480 miles and get the 03' out to 450 miles according to the gas range on the trip computer. Interior there is no comparison...although some parts seem to be shared...like the trunk release lever, bits of the sun shades etc. Exterior the 03' just looks plain bigger in the garage next to the 01'. Styling...the 03' is awesome especially with the fog lights...just looks so sleek ...and the hood lines are beautiful ...ours is the Desert Mist color. I have caught myself admiring the fire-pepper red 01' around dusk when walking back to her for the trip home...it's more of a classic 90's design...and the 03' will maintain it's road presence for at least 10 years. I did check out the Acura TSX after the fact...and have no regrets about our 03'. The Acura felt a little cheap...the interior door panels are not nearly and easy on the eye...nor the center dash and console. Also the rear seat head room is small like the Mazda6...which is what the TSX reminded me of...the Accord is a definite step up...as far as room, value etc...our 03' out the door with the 100k warr. was equal to the TSX base price...less for more $...doesn't add up, but I am glad there are available in the US. Long term I hope Honda brings their new 2.2L diesel which is will soon be offered in the Euro Accord...and I'd luv to see a wagon. My dream Accord would be a diesel-hybrid wagon (like the COG Honda add)...sporty looks...loads of room and 50+mpg.

I have 5100 miles on my '03 Accord i4 Auto. I have averaged 30 mpg with more city driving than highway. With your navi giving actual mpg, could you tell me what the difference in mpg at 55, 60, and 65 mph? I usually try to find a speed that it can stay in overdrive for the terrain.
Not having a trip computer is one thing I have really missed on the new car. I bought it mainly for its power advantage over Camry on regular gas and its 5 speed auto.
    Thanks for your input.

Problem with the Camry is it's awkward looks and it's dull performance. I certainly don't think the Accord's looks are perfect, but it's sleek and sexy compared to a Camry IMO.

Re Post 11479 accordance by jcroberts:

My accord has a trip computer on the odometer, with two individual trip (A+B) odometers. Is that what you are talking about, or are you talking about a feature in the navi that shows you mpg over a period of time?

I always check my mileage with the trip odo's and have gotten 38 on strictly highway driving when at 4,000 miles.

I'm just looking for guidance on how to sell it. The trade-in quote I got is too low.
any answers to the following questions will be appreciated:
    1. If I sell it myself, what's the best listing service?
    2. If I sell it to a private party, do I have to pay any tax for it?
    3. What paper work do I have to do, other than sign the title and give it to the buyer?

BTW, it's a 4dr LX sedan, 5speed stick shift, 57000 miles, in very good condition. The dealships only offers $4500, which I think is too low.
  • blaneblane Member Posts: 2,017
    midsize:

Dealerships will ALWAYS offer a low tradein price compared to what you can get by selling a car privately. You will also find that either figure will be lower for a typical 4-door sedan, when it is equipped with a limited appeal feature such as a manual transmission. That's just a harder-to-sell type of car since abot 90% of new family sedans are purchased with automatics.

    1. If you sell it yourself, the best bet is advertising in your local newspaper or placing prominent signs in the windows and parking the vehicle in high traffic locations such as near shopping mall entrances. You can also try websites such as cars.com or autotrader.com.

    2. In most states, the buyer pays the tax.

    3. In most states, you just sign the title over. But you should draw up a formal bill of sale with specifics such as brand, model, VIN, color, mileage, condition, names, addresses and signatures of both buyer and seller.

The accord and accura model (TSX?) that shares its body both look like
they hit a loading dock going backwards at 30mph and smashed in the
back end and distorted the tailights. The Camry is a small step better IMO.
Earlier accord looked like a car designed for its purpose.
