Tint the windows and it won't matter what color the car is outside or inside. I've had a few black cars and while it's hotter initially if you don't have tint even without tint it'll cool off pretty quick and with tint you probably won't notice.

I test drove an '03 V-6 and, while looking under the hood, noticed the oil recommendation printed on the engine: something like 20W-40. Is that right? Is there such a thing?

New(er) light weight oil for improved fuel economy, and better cold weather starting.

Need a little help here. I live in Minnesota, driving a 2000 Accord with factory tires (28000 miles). Unfortunately I also live at the bottom of a hill, about 15-20 degree grade, and usually not plowed for 1-2 days after each snow. Got stuck several times last winter. Can I expect significant traction improvement with snow tires? Or should I buy that Audi A4 Quattro I looked at the other day? Thanks.

You wanted to know where all the new 03 accords were at or were the owners just hiding them.
Were hiding them,we keep our babies in the garage, ha ha. No the car is so wonderful we keep them under lock and key. I have seen one other one on the road. Not sure what the deal is??
  • ickes_mobileickes_mobile Member Posts: 675
I'd be buying an A4, Passat 4Motion, anything made by Subaru, etc...
  • slu3slu3 Member Posts: 10
Make that Ice Tires! I have the same problem, only further North! Just equipped my '00 Accord with 4 Bridgestone Blizzaks WS-50. Well, I figure it's less expensive than to acquire a new Passat or Audi is it?

There's promises to be flurries later on in the week, will update you when the going gets really tough.

If the tires live up to the reviews, they should climb the gradient without too much trouble.

I would not be surprised if Accord sales are below expectations, because this bulky redesign is love it or hate it. Usually Honda styling is timeless, this time IMHO it isn't.
  • diploiddiploid Member Posts: 2,286
I think this argument will be more interesting when autosite.com updates to September sales figures.
  • ickes_mobileickes_mobile Member Posts: 675
    Forget Blizzaks get studs...
  • bowkebowke Member Posts: 169
the recommended oil is 5w-20. only honda and ford use it for right now. the advantage is oil change recommendations up to 10,000 miles or 12 months in the i-4 models, the drawback is that its not yet available aftermarket, so its either dealer or nothing for awhile.

accord sales for october are above what they were last year...at least for our dealership. we had a record volume month last october overall, and are about to top it again this month. here in louisville, there are quite a few new accords on the road.

Get the snow tires instead of the AWD. They will cost much less, and you will get better gas mileage than an AWD vehicle. I have driven an AWD Subaru back to back in the snow with my Integra (with 4 blizzaks). There is no comparison. The FWD with snows wins hands down. Remember the AWD does nothing to help you when you are braking or turning. Remember you have to come down that hill too - a FWD with snows will stop much much better than the AWD without them. The FWD will also corner much better. Acceleration, and going up hills will be about the same.

Remember for every time you go up a hill or accelerate, you much also go down a hill or decelerate. Don't fall for the hype!

The latest Consumer reports has a good test of snow tires.

hi, i thought i'd post some follow-up comments after having had our 2003 Accord EX-I4 for 2 weeks and having driven about 700 miles.

    Mileage:
two largely city + stop and go highwy: 27 MPG
one highway trip averaging about 75 MPH: 35 MPG

i'm very pleased with the above numbers considering the car isn't broken in yet.

    How it looks:
    - interior: first rate--best i've seen in a car of this price range.
    - exterior: good--i was neutral on it at first, but i'm starting to like it more and more. always thought the front was nice. back is probably its worst view, but it's acceptable. profile is it's best view. nice seams and curves.

    What's to like:

    - very quiet and smooth ride compared to previous generation Accords while still giving decent road feedback to the driver.
    - engine noise is amazingly muted for a 4 cylinder. granted it is 2.4 litres. but taching at only 2500 going 75 MPH on the freeway is very civilized.
    - sufficient power in clean (SULEV), decent mileage I4 engine. i haven't been left wanting any more power in any situation yet. i fully expect to be seeing 38-39 MPG on the highway or 40+ if i can ease off and drive 65-70 MPH.
    - silky smooth transmission. it continues to impress me as i drive it more...it shifts smoothly and doesn't call attention to itself on hills. i still love my 5 spd, but this is nice [primarly my wife's car] and i can finally stop complaining about how bad automatics are. [actually the CVTs i've driven are nice as well]
    - solid brakes: i had to do a semi-quick stop yesterday [bottlneck on the freeway and a large truck in front of me without working brake lights!] good solid stopping and nice pedal feel.
    - steering: nice feedback as is usual for Hondas and Acuras.
    - interior ergonomics: top notch: everything is laid out where it should be [i'm used to the dumb Honda/Acura placement of the sunroof control with my 2000 Civic]
    - nice climate control system: i like the 9 or so speed fan (like my Civics) which gives much flexibility
    - back lit gauges are easy on the eye and not overly busy.
    - very quiet and smooth operating sunroof
    - handles normal windy road with confident control. it's not a sports car nor a super sports sedan, but it handles itself quite well. [far better than the Toyota Camry]. it's pleasantly nimble and well balanced [perhaps, the weight distribution with the I4 is better than the V6].

What's not to like (these are small complaints, but the car's not perfect!):

    - one minor rattle that i haven't been able to locate. it sounds like foam rubbing against something (maybe in the headliner) i can ignore with the radio on, however.
    - lame license plate holder in front: i've removed it. it's very flimsy and cheap.
    - sunroof is very slow to operate [although very quiet as indicated above]
    - lame fuel cap with retaining tether! [i prefer the normal cap...maybe i'll just snip that tether!]
    - finicky glove box that requires firm shove to close it.
-visibility is only fair in the rear of the car. the back window is short, and i find the rear pillar fairly large and wish it were better.
-rear view mirror: i wish it were a touch wider. i'm used to being able to cover a larger range of the back glass with my rear view mirror and for some reason (maybe because this car is fairly wide), it seems the lateral coverage is a touch limited with the Accord.

Overall, a great car for the money. Not the perfect car, but for the money, it doesn't get much better than this. When i compared it this weekend with my dad's 1991 Acura Legend (which he paid around 30k for out the door), i can see how much value this car represents.

5W20 oil is readily available in any auto store, Walmart, etc. I personally use Pennzoil but I have also seen Castrol, Valvoline and the Ford brand (Motocraft?). Chevron, Havoline and others also offer 5W20. Amsoil makes a synthetic 5W20 and Mobil1 is coming out with 5W20 soon.

A bigger debate is whether you should use 5W20 at all. Many people feel 5W20 is recommended only for fuel efficiency and it may actually harm the engine. They recommend 5W30 or 10W30.

last week, I saw 2 accords on the same day !
    ( silver & white )

so far since Sept.9 I have seen 4 new accords. When the new Camry came out last year, 2 months later I saw at least 5-10 a day. Could it be that people in my area ( New York / New Jersey ) are waiting for the Mazda6 or even 04 TL until buying their next mid-size ?

I think the new Accord is a nice car, not perfect but a little better than the Camry. well, in a few months I expect to see alot more.
  • ickes_mobileickes_mobile Member Posts: 675
of the new Accord. They're out there.

It's the NYC economy.People are just holding off on major purchases. My friend just purchased an 02 Accord off of a guy that lost his job. Also Toyota is offering 2.9% on 03 Camry. I saw it Advertised on the Jets Vs Browns game, yesterday.

That rattle you have may be the infamous Honda moonroof gasket rattle.
  • dfong87dfong87 Member Posts: 171
hey, thanks for the thought. in fact, i was just thinking about it reading the other board about people's moonroof issues. the only thing that goes against that theory is it *appears* to be coming from the "left" of the driver's side. ie, it seems like it's near the driver's door window along the roof/headliner or the door trim/gasket itself. but who knows? sounds can travel in odd ways in cars.

i'm hoping to track it down before bringing it to the dealer. i know from past experience that they will throw up their hands and say "we can't find it" if you don't at least play a role in helping them find it. [and in some cases, they can make problems worse by generating new rattles!] fortunately, it's "almost liveable" since it really isn't perceivable with the radio turned on.

FWIW, after tracking down one sound/rattle in my 2000 Civic, it is dead quiet as far as squeaks/rattles/vibrations go. but from my experience, that is pretty unusual. [i'm very picky!]
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
...In the winter of 99-00, I had the most annoying rattle/drumming sound that I thought was coming from the windshield seal right by my head in my 98 EX. Sounds like yours. It only happened on cold days and at highway speeds. I took 3 different techs out for rides but we could never track it down.

The weather was getting warmer so the dealer told me not to worry about it since my warranty was about to expire - it was noted and if it came back they would take care of it. It never did!! Maybe you'll have that kind of luck.

Since September 9th, I have seen 6 Accords in the NYC area. 5 on the road and 1 demo at the dealer. The demo was a silver LXV6. Very nice but I think I will go for the EXV6 because I want to feel luxury around me and the leather will just about do that for me. On the road, I have seen 1 Graphite LXV6, 1 Graphite EXV6, 1 Silver EXV6, and 2 Silver EXs. I love the rims on the EX four cylinder but I will live with the rims on the EXV6 for the extra power. I hope to get a graphite pearl EXV6 but if worse comes to worse, I will settle for a silver EX-L.

How is the 5 speed on the 03 Accord? I had a Prelude (1992) 5 speed and it was very enjoyable.
  • jud95accordjud95accord Member Posts: 58
I have an 03 EX-V6 and I heard a rattle the 2nd week. I was a little worried and it ended up being the passenger side visor was not secured in it's clip. The sound was not coming from that exact spot but after clicking it into position, the rattle stopped.
  • dfong87dfong87 Member Posts: 171
    i'll check both visors.
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
The 5-speed in the EX sedan I drove felt like butter. It definitely lives up to the Honda reputation for awesome manual transmissions.

As for comments on the Accord's looks.... people were saying the same things when the 98 Accord came out and the same things when the 94 Accord came out. Both aged very well. I expect no less out of the new Accord simply because it stays true to Hondas of the past. It's simple, nothing gaudy about it. There's nothing on it that screams "trendy".
  • bodydoublebodydouble Member Posts: 801
One way to test to see if it is the moonroof gasket is to drive around either with the interior sunshade closed or with the moonroof open and see if you can still hear the rattle.
  • robertsmxrobertsmx Member Posts: 5,525
Try some silicone lubricant around the rubber seals. That has been the only problem/squeak/rattle in my car (98 Accord EX, now about 74K miles). It works in my car, but I repeat the application every 3-4 months.
  • kennyg5kennyg5 Member Posts: 360
Has anyone had first hand experience with the nav. in the new Accord? Is it different from the nav in the Acura TL? I don't think TL's nav is voice activated? I just bought a 03 Maxima and had thought about getting the nav. I finally decided against getting it because the Max nav is CD-rom (not DVD) based.
  • bartalk2bartalk2 Member Posts: 326
That's the recommended oil, I guess. But as someone said, maybe that's really not the oil to use, as it increases gas mileage but at the possible expense of engine wear. For you people out there who own '03 Accords, does the instruction manual say other weights (e.g., 5W-30) are acceptable alternatives? What's the story? Plus I think 5W-20 may be difficult to get at Jiffy Lube and other fast oil change places.
  • slayers_boxerslayers_boxer Member Posts: 10
My 2003 LX V6 rides very smooth under like 50mph.
When on the highway (over 60), though, it is a bit bumpy, which is strange. Has anyone experienced this type of ride on the highway?
  • robertsmxrobertsmx Member Posts: 5,525
What do you mean by bumpy? Bouncy?
  • bolivarbolivar Member Posts: 2,316
My 2002 V6 also calls for 5W-20 oil.

I does NOT indicate other weights are acceptable. As a matter of fact, the manual says something along the lines of 'If 5W-20 is not available, 5W-30 may be used. But if is used, it should be drained and replaced with 5W-20 at the first possible time.

Of course, you should ask you Honda dealer what they are going to stick in your car. Mine said 10W-30 (I think, might have been 5W-30). When I asked about the manual requiring 5W-20, the service manager said 'Ok, we can put that in if you want it.'

I had the feeling, I better be standing there watching to get 5W-20.

I'm changing my own. And yes, Pennzoil for sure, and now several others are available in 5W-20, at your local Walmart and Kmart stores.

Because Honda's manual seems so picky about calling for only Honda products, I'm going to buy my Pennzoil and DelcoReamy filter 5quarts and 1 at a time. I'm scanning in my dated receipt and the filter and the front of the oil bottle. If Honda gives me any s**t, I think Delco and Pennzoil would love to give me help about their products meeting Honda specifications....

The new shifter felt much better then the one on my '02 LX. And its either gearing or the new motor, but all transitions are much smoother without any additional effort. Tilting/telescoping steering column helps a lot, too.
  • dfong87dfong87 Member Posts: 171
thanks for all of the tips.

    to follow-up:
    -it's not the visors.
-rattle is heard whether the moonroof shade is open or closed [not louder when visor is open]. when the moonroof is open, there is no sound, but the rattle/sound is quiet enough that exterior noise makes it impossible to hear. [like i said before, it's minor]
    - i *still* think its where the headliner meets the driver's door jamb but i can't seem to confirm that while trying to drive safely. one moment i seem to quell the sound by holding my hand against a certain spot above the door and then when i thought i had it, later in the drive this morning, i found it kept going even with my hand in place. sigh.

i think i'm driving my wife nuts (we commute together!): she said to just leave it alone! i think she can live with it. i'm trying to convince myself that i can, but we'll see how far my nerosis takes me. my fear is that that the dealer will make problems worse by taking apart the headline and trim, or create a new one.

i will try to investigate the moonroof more, but based on my limited evaluation driving home last night, the moonroof does not appear to be the problem.

interestingly enough though. i drove my 2000 civic last night and guess what: i think that car has the moonroof rattle! (thanks guys! =p) it is not audible with the shade closed, but when open, i can hear it rattle a little. is that the noise you guys have experienced? fortunately, it isn't audible with the shade closed and that car is still tight as a drum after 3 years and 29k miles.

thanks again for all of the comments.
  • bodydoublebodydouble Member Posts: 801
I would definitely NOT let the dealer take the interior apart to try to find the rattle. I would give it some time and see if it disappears or gets louder to the point where you can pinpoint it easier. Or your tolerance threshold may increase! :)
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
No matter how competent a technician, trying to find a pesky rattle is a job they detest.

Of course, it won't rattle when they drive it and it's possible to create another rattle while fixing the first one.

Often they will go away by themselves.
  • robertsmxrobertsmx Member Posts: 5,525
Try lubricating the seals and the rails. That should fix it.
  • dfong87dfong87 Member Posts: 171
bodydouble and isellhondas: thanks for your feedback. i agree. if i can't locate it myself; i'm not going to have the dealer do any work on the car. even if i find the location, i'm reluctant. i know of friend's who have had new problems created in the quest for a rattle-free car.

robertsmx: thanks for the suggestions. what kind of lube do you suggest for the seals and rails of my Civic's moonroof? any particular brand and type to suggest? [i presume this can be found at either a hardware store or auto supply store?]
  • krillinkrillin Member Posts: 27
Hey, I actually have that same rattling sound... right above the driver side door in the headliner somewhere. It comes and goes, I think we will just have to wait and see if it goes away. Anyways, good luck and keep us updated.
  • dfong87dfong87 Member Posts: 171
yep, sounds like the same phenomenon as the rattle we have. it definitely comes and goes. you too keep us posted if yours goes away or you find the source. it's not all that bad, but i'm picky and expect perfection from Honda! LOL. =)

otherwise, its a very quiet ride and great car. hope you're enjoying yours as well.
  • krillinkrillin Member Posts: 27
Yeah, I have about 3500 miles already on the car and it just keeps getting better. The shifts are getting smoother and it seems the car is accelerating a lot faster too. I'm going in for the first oil change this Friday.
  • prebmwprebmw Member Posts: 23
I thought that I was the only one going nuts with the rattle coming from somewhere along the top of the driver's door. I also own an 03 Accord EXL with about 2000 miles. For the last 1200 miles, I have had the rattle at the top of the driver's door. It comes and goes - though I have it more at speeds above 50mph. Weather conditions don't affect it. At first, I thought maybe it was in the door post since I thought that I heard it coming from behind. However, no matter where I listen along the top of the door, that sounds like where it is coming from. I've tried lowering the window and pushing on the black molding that runs on top of the roof thinking maybe air was getting under it, but that didn't help. Mine is going in Friday to the dealer to see if they can find it. It is nice to know that others seem to be having the same problem. Mine was built in Japan - I wonder if others with the noise were built there also. Otherwise, I really like the car. It is so much better than the 2000 that I had.

I'm wondering if I could trouble you just a bit. I would like to find out which tire (with proper inflation) would weigh more or less then the other. I'm trying to decide which sets of rims I would like to put on the new accord. Less weight is preferable (easier changing tires). Tires I'm looking at: EX L (5 spoke) and EX V6 (7 Spoke) 16' rims. I'm not too strong and would like to make tire changes easier on myself even it's 2-3 lbs.

    thanks.....
  • dfong87dfong87 Member Posts: 171
hi, my "above door rattling" accord was made in Japan as well. it's an I4-EX. please post a follow-up as to what the dealer can/cannot find.

Just purchased an 03 accord ex. is it worth getting mud guards? they dont look so good on the silver as the mud guards are black and bulky. do they actually serve a useful purpose. I noticed a lot of different cars dont have them.

My 98'accord has 90K miles on it. The dealer says it is time to change timing belt. However, Honda manual says recommended @ 105K miles. Any ideas?
  • mtr2mtr2 Member Posts: 7
My 98 accord with 90K miles has this intermittent problem. While coming to a stop from 50/60 mph, suddenly my RPM on the tach goes to almost 0 and car starts vibrating. Then, I have to shift to 'N', press the accelerator to increase the RPM and shift back to 'D' again. Any ideas?

I seriously considered buying an '02 CRV, but ultimately chose the Subaru Forester instead. One signficant factor in my decision was that the Canadian CRV included features not avaialbe on that year's US version, basically a cold weather package.

My Forester has heated mirrors, heated seats, and heating elements under the wipers, along with an outside temparature gauge.

The lack of those features, even though they were offered 1000 miles north made me feel like a second class citizen.

The Accord certainly looks promising, though. Hope to see one soon.
