I use the key and from the drivers door I can of course open the drivers door, but no matter what it does not lock or unlock the other doors.
If I go to the passenger door, it locks and unlocks them fine, actually too fine. It seems one twist of the key should open the passenger door only, and another twist of the key would open all doors. It unlocks and locks with one twist.
As for the windows being active after the key is off and out of ignition, I think this is a nice feature so you dont have to put the key in again and turn to acc to get power to the windows to close em.
Mine stop operating when I open the door and before I open the door, they are timed so that you can not operate them.
This is what I went to check cause if the windows worked when the doors are locked BUT perhaps cracked open, that would make opening the window an easy trick for bad guys.
I am not going to bring the car to the dealer for the lock problem only. Actually I hope to NEVER see the dealer if I can help it. I dont want anything messed up by them.
If I had to guess, either the switch in the door is bad or not connected. I may see what is required to remove the door panel BUT not yet, there are no rattles so I dont want to make any either.
Maybe that is something you can post next, door panel removal.

On my Sonata, the locks work the same on the driver's and passenger sides...one turn opens or closes all the doors in the car. I was told that this is true on the passenger side only on the 6 cylinder GLS, not the 4 cyl base model or the Elantra, which I also test drove. It definitely sounds like yours is screwed up. As part of the kit I received a booklet detailing the codes to programme the alarm and door locks to do what you want. One of the features is for anti car jacking that allows you to programme the system so that the drivers door only unlocks. There are many other programmable options such as autolock when the engine starts.
This programming facility is not covered in the usual owners manual.
By the way, the Alarm Upgrade is easy to install with the hardest part locating the wire for the trunk light at the front kick panel as there is a multi pin connector and all the wires are black despite what the instructions say.

Since my car was put out of commission due to traffic accident and not through any fault of the vehicle, I don't get a loaner through Hyundai. They did provide free roadside assistance and towing the car to nearest Hyundai dealer.
Do many Hyundai dealers provide loaner cars? For routine maintenance? Warranty work? (Loaner cars are something buyers of XG300 should likely get. If Hyundai wants to go upscale, then it has to treat upscale buyers accordingly. Of course, TANSTAAFL and you get what you pay for.)
I borrowed $18,400 for 48 months at 0.9% Hyundai Motor Credit Financing and will pay only $352 total interest. Monthly payment only $381. When I had the run the numbers on the $1,000 rebate and bank financing, I lost about $2,500 dollars over the four years. So my car in 4 years will cost me only about $18,750. What will your total be?
I don't carry rental on any of my three cars. The Sonata is my business car. When it is in shop I drive my pleasure car, a '96 Impala SS.
FINALLY THE WAIT IS OVER. Body Shop called to say it is done! Took 1 month and 1 day, due to parts wait!!! Now they have to send her over to maintenance to do the MAF sensor recall. Can't wait to get her back on Monday? Hope she's wagging her tail and jumping up & down to see me.
2. Oddly, my Hyundai dealer wouldn't do the MAF sensor work. They told me to my face this afternoon that Hyundai has NOT issued a recall, none at all, for the '99/'00 GLS V-6. Claimed they had checked their computers twice today on this. And had heard nothing from Hyundai. Told them I could print out the NHTSA Recall info and I'd see 'em on Monday.

Hyundai dealership service departments! I know it's not something specific to Hyundai, or for that matter any region, but it still upsets me to no end. All it takes is one moron in there and then everyone else is backing him up to save face. I've seen this in action several times trying to get things taken care of on my car. If it was me I'd give them hell! One thing I can't stand is someone who immediatly thinks the customer is wrong. They sit there all day with their predetermined little mindset that no matter what you say or do, your'e just the dumb customer. Let us know what they say when you show them proof. I have a recall coming out on my Toyota Echo but I'm waiting until I get the official letter from Toyota before I take it in. Good luck!
As far as financing goes, giowa, I went thru my credit union with a 5 yr loan at 7/5%. I would not have qualified for the 0.9% at Hyundai because I have too many credit inquiries on my report (recently refinanced my mortgage). So compared to the bank rates I think I did ok. Monthly payment is $334 and I put down about $1850. I also plan to trade it in after about 3 yrs, since I will have reached the 100k miles (or very close to it) by that point.
I do not know the particulars of that post, but remember it deals with body damage, not normal maintenance work.
I to am interested in the Santa Fe, and will be making a purchase next month. My 'Ol blue and grey has got to get 300,000 on her before I put her to pasture, currently pushing 298,000.
Stopped by dealer to look at XG300 (quite impressive) and show NHTSA Recall notice to service dept. Parts Manager was ranking person. He told me that he had only learned about the recall around 10/7/00. He said it is not their policy to tell service advisors about the recall until Hyundai puts it in their computers and when customer comes in with the recall notice. (I told him he should post the NHTSA notice off web site once he finds out because lots of people like us already know and they should be proactive with customers.)
He has spoken with Hyundai to learn more but they don't appear to have the necessary info or parts. He is going to call them again on Monday.
The servicing body shop, a huge Chevy-Olds-Cadillac-Suburu-Hyundai operation, told me that Hyundai parts often take longer to get in. He said he would've had a Chevy Malibu or Olds Alero back on road in half the time, all due to parts availability. There weren't that many labor hours involved. Lots of days no work done while waiting to get everything needed. (And I don't say that to be mean to Hyundai. I love my Sonata GLS. Just that Hyundai needs to pay attention to issues like parts availability if they want to expand in US, esp. outside biggest cities or East & West coasts.)
Also took out a Santa Fe thursday. I love it. I drove a CRV limited, and a Kia Sportage within the last 3 weeks, and neither compares to the sense of security and presence the Santa Fe has.As well as power and quality. The CRV is still in my opinion not enough car for the dollar.
Too tin-box like for my liking. But it's a womens grocery getter anyway, and anyone who drives one is probably lacking in a few hormones anyway.
The Santa Fe, however, is a different breed. And Hyundai knew they couldn't just copy Honda, so they set out to design and build this amazing machine for less than a CRV. The V6 is what is needed in this vehicle, as well as the ability to shift manually. In the XG, I'm not sure, but in the SAnta Fe, for sure. You may find that there is a slight hesitation when you first press on the gas. But I'm told, which I do believe, is that the fuzzy logic transmission hasn't learned your driving pattern yet. Coming from the factory, there is zero in the memory for the computor chips to know that you either drive hard off the line or baby it. After twenty minutes, I started to notice the Santa Fe was learning my driving pattern of stepping down hard on the gas from a stop, and it was responding by getting quicker each time. Way cool. And there is some serious ponies under that hood. Okay not killer like, but CRV killer like.
The styling and finish of the Santa Fe isn't as supple as the XG, a little more retro and perhaps easier to clean...hence SUV! However, it does look a little plasticy,(if thats a word)in some spots. I still love it. It will dance around it's intended competition (CRV, RAV, etc) And it feels much more solid than their tin box design. The tiptronic switches just as slick as the XG's and the independant susp. soaks up potholes and road iregularities very well. I really think that this little monster would do well off road too, as it comes with skid plates and sits up high with short overhangs and good approach/depart angles. Space is no worse than a CRV, although the seating and surounding is more comfortable. Everything feels pretty solid, with very little body lean, and no bounce. It's not like anything north american ...thank GOD! And it's at least 5k cheaper.
In Canada, it only comes with a 2.7 V6 in either GLS 4 wheel drive or GLS two wheel drive. Which means all leather interior, heated seats, 6 spkr CD stereo, power windows, locks, 16 in wheels, no climate control (damn) will have to wait for 2002.
This, in my opinion, is the best SUV buy for $28,995. An XG300 loaded is $31,995. Both are excellent vehicles that will provide years of pleasurable driving. Hyundai has put together a winner right out of the gate. I hope others will see that too.
The Sonata, is still one of my favourites, cause I have a 93, thats still purring. Heh, was it supposed to last 8 years and 173,000 klms? And still have zero rust, no rattles or squeaks, no oil burn, and give 600+ klms per 60 litres? You guys with sonotas have some pleasurable years of driving ahead of you.
2. My dealership called me today. Parts Mgr called Hyundai and got confirmation on the recall is it specifically applies to my car. He was getting some information downloaded via their computer data network that morning and is waiting to get some additional information so he'll have the parts and the technician will know exactly what he is supposed to do. (I think it is a real broad recall pretty much covering all the V-6 cars made between the specified dates. My early build '00 was right in the middle of the two dates.) I've got an appointment for Thursday to have the work done.
3. Yes, as per the NHTSA Recall notice info, it the "MAF Sensor connector wiring harness" not the MAF sensor itself that is involved in the recall. Says "intermitted low-speed engine stalling" may occur if the signal to the MAF is "interrupted as a result of engine vibration". Not a big deal to fix, I hope!

What add-ons does it have besides pkg. 13? Net? Mats? Mudguards? Deflector? Keyless? Alarm?
Look for the build date on the inside drivers' door frame plaque. If it is a mid-to-late '00, you are very likely not affected by the recall anyway. Mine has a date of 3/21/00 and I have not experienced any problems of any kind in any regard. If I do get a notice based on VIN numbers I will take it in and have the SIMPLE repair done. No big deal.
Just got back from a fall trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Westminster, Md. to Blacksburg, Va. and surroundings. Moonbeam (my wifes' name for the car) averaged 25.6mpgs for 800 miles carrying four adults and a fully loaded trunk with constant A/C. Kept the gear selector in 3rd going up the steep mountains and she just flew. Anyone who drives in the mountains knows how quickly elevations can change. The GLS is sweet to drive and downright comfy on long trips, even with the firm leather seat cushions. Every one of us on the trip were truly impressed with the vehicles' performance. We were also accompanied by another couple in their fairly new Cherry Red Solara 4 cyl. They really liked the Sonata and were surprised at the price.
Hopefully all the trips we take in the future will be as smooth and carefree as this one.

Glad to hear that you are back to road running

jomorison: I strongly concur with astrol's advice. Think that price sounds pretty good for a loaded Sonata GLS, even a '00. Remember that there are no real differences between the '00s and '01s. I don't count a new grille as being substantive.
However, you'll give up some resale, though, on the '00. Are you financing? What is Hyundai Motor Credit offering? I'm thinking the price you are being offered includes a rebate but no cut-rate financing. See if you can get the financing and skip the rebate. You'll be amazed at how much interest there is even over the first two years of a loan. Go for 0.9% if you finance. If not being offered, then I might wait on the '01. The XG300 and Santa Fe are getting all the publicity. Hyundai likely will need big incentives, rebates or financing, to move Sonatas in '01.

Just received the recall notice from Hyundai in the mail today. My car has been trouble-free so naturally I expect trouble after they start messing with it. It seems Hyundai is issuing a broad recall notice as per the NHTSA site. There was nothing about VIN specifics in what I received.
I intend to book mine next week along with the first oil change. Good Luck with your car.
I am still waiting for my cabin air filter to arrive at the dealership. I'm surprised they don't stock them since I'm sure there are plenty of GLS's out there hitting 9,000 miles!!! At least that was the change interval I heard it was set at anyway. Three dealerships here and none stock it. Of course they don't stock touch up paint either which also irks me.
Anyways, I'm glad I don't have to worry about the recall since mine is the 4 cyl and mine never had any problems with the purge valve so knock on wood. This board should get more use, especially now that I know you guys are lurking around here! :-)
I got tired of going to the trunk to change CDs, so nowadays I like to simply replace the factory head unit with a top-quality aftermarket CD receiver. I end up spending about the same amount of money but the installation is even simpler and cleaner. Plus the sound quality and features are much better to boot. I don't ever listen to cassette tape any more, so I don't miss not having that. The only other downside that is that it isn't as steathy as the stock HU + CD changer in trunk setup.
I haven't had much luck with t-h-c either.
