I have a '99 Trooper w/ leather/power seats. At 6'3", am just a bit too tall for the front seat, which has always seemed too close to the dash. Any way to pull the seat and make adjustments to the seat and/or rails to move the seat back another 4"-6"?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Someone here a long time ago brought their truck to a body shop and they were able to re-mount the seat further back. Shouldn't be too difficult. If you do it, give me a writeup for http://isuzu-suvs.com

A relatively cheap conversion. Not anywhere near as good as HIDs with the proper reflector, but a decent upgrade to stock lighting. Also probably illegal.

I am looking at getting a JVC CH-X1000 or 1200 CD changer. It connects with a J-Cable? Does anyone know if this will connect directly to the Stock Radio and if I can use it to control the CD Changer?

I have a 99 with the Airlift 1000 system. I have the manual fill with separate airlines (I like separate air lines as this type of setup contributes to a reduction in bodyroll). I was happy but not thrilled with the system. It appeared as though the bags were a touch short. With the vehicle at rest, unloaded, the bags didn't have firm contact with at the top thus they weren't supporting any weight until the springs were compressed (even with upto 15psi). Given the limited compression travel inherent to the suspension I wanted the bags to do more, sooner, in hopes of adding a more progressive feel to the rear suspension (without having to raise my vehicle via OME springs. I am one of a very few who doesn't want to lift my Trooper.) My solution was to use a piece of composite decking material (fake wood) as a shim on top of the bag. I took a 4" holesaw to a 1x6 piece of the fake wood. I then took the round pieces created by holesawing through the plank and used them as shims on top of the bags. A little JB Weld on the top surface of the shim to ensure that it stays during supension extensions and I was done. The improvement in smoothness of ride and progressiveness of the rear suspension is very noticeable and welcome. Shimming as I did doesn't appear as though it will cause any pinching or binding of the bag even under full suspension compression. It should make the bag last even longer as the top surface sans shim isn't particularly flat. Hope this is of interest.

The Sway-A-Ways arrived yesterday - finally! Unfortunately I am going out of town each of the next two or three weekends, so I don't know when I am going to put them on...

    Kinda funny, my priorities have changed, I found out that I'm getting LAID-OFF ":0 on Friday. Could be a blessing in disguise though, maybe it's time to leave San Diego and put the Trooper into action in the Pacific Northwest. Watch out, San Diegan on the loose :}
I'll be looking for your report sometime down the road.

Sorry to hear about the layoff. Been there, no fun (except for the free time).

Seems to be a lot of that going around...
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Sorry Ray:( Everyone is being laid of now, and it just sux :( On a side note, I can now get extended range fuel tanks, roof racks, snorkels, etc. here in the US. Check out http://www.ecb-usa.com and http://www.ecb.com.au

raydahs, sorry to hear you were laid off. I can sympathize with you as I lost my job too in July. I worked at Lucent and it went down fast. A lot of companies are having difficulties especially in Technology, DotComs, Telecommunications, and Airlines. Good luck.
  • bluedevilsbluedevils Member Posts: 2,554
Very sorry to hear about your layoff. I've heard that things are very expensive in San Diego but wages are pretty low, making the cost of living quite ridiculous. True?

You'll definitely get more utility out of your Trooper if you head north!
  • raydahsraydahs Member Posts: 449
San Diego's cost of living is out of control, I'm outa here ASAP. I knew that the glory days would come to a end, that's why I bought the Trooper in 99. I'm in a fortunate position where I can go just about anywhere in the country, and the Trooper will get me anywhere, as you all know. Luckily in the early 90's I did work on the B-2 bomber, most of the mechanical engineering work out there now is DEFENSE :] so things are going to be o.k.

For those who don't have adjustable lumbar support, but want additional support. I got a support from Peb Boys. It's black and has a curved steel frame with beads. You can bend it to fit your lumbar. It work nice for me and cost only $2.50!

OK, so I need to get serious about installing my driving lights on the nudge bar. Instead of the switch that came with the lights, I seem to remember one of you installed an additional factory fog light switch (with the lighted indicator) in one of the blank switch locations on my 99 Trooper (I assume next to the existing fog light switch). Correct?

Do Luxury Troopers have any other switches that would work for this, such as for driving lights? Not a big deal, but if there is such a switch that would have a different marking on it than my fog light switch it would be less confusing. I just assume the Luxurys fill up all those blank switch locations with something...
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Not in the US. outside the us, there are all kinds of gizmos in those switch spots.

I'm sitting here trying to figure out what else would need a button that I don't already have on my PP Trooper...let's see

    heated seats?
    moonroof
    multimeter controls?
    headlight wipers (overseas)

That's about all I can come up with right now...

My weekend plans changed, so I was able to install the Sway-A-Way torsion bars on my Troop on Saturday. 20-30 percent stiffer than stock, according to the brochure, they certainly are thicker and heavier than stock.

I'm still fiddling with the ride height before I give a driving review, and they probably need some breaking in, but my initial impressions are favorable. I was afraid that the ride would be rock hard, but it isn't.

Mike, I could do a write-up for this mod, if you want.

I'd love to get a writeup for the how-to section, with pics if possible :)

Hey for any of you who are interested in ECB nudge bars, the cutoff date for the nudge bar group buy is Oct 31st. Big Tube Bars ship as single units so they can be ordered whenever. E-mail me ecb@iace.com for details etc.

Where can I get a trailer hitch 2" reciever light made with the logo lighted up with regular tail lights? Even more since I am filling out a wish list here, the light could get bright for stopping. Still more each side of the logo would blink with turn signals. All these lighting features are available on my standard 4 wite trailer hitch electrical plug. I would like to plug the trailer hitch plug into a forward facing (not visible from behind) area to one side of where it insterts into the hitch.
    Thank You
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Never seen it before. You could get one that does that and just spray an isuzu logo over it, like the Dodge boys do with the rams head.

    -mike
  • boxtrooperboxtrooper Member Posts: 843
Add to that wish list for a trailer hitch Isuzu Logo light that it be dual color LEDs. Yellow when it is a turn signal and red when it is a stop light.
    ..
Anybody building in LED lights o aftermarket bumpers? They are so reliable that they could be mounted without easy access for bulb replacement.
    Thank You
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Of putting LEDs on the rear bar protector.

On a side note, I saw one of the manik bars on a durango today. I was laughing my butt off. They are so cheesy. The thin tube that goes across the back, was crushed and pushed into the bumper. Thereby protecting nothing! the bumper was scratched pretty bad. Thought it was funny to see it on the street like that.

    Hey gang, been a while. Still not working, but I kinda like it, I'm sleeping in to 6:00 a.m. and riding my bike 30 miles, up and down the coast every other day. The ladies are out in force:}

Just wanted to share something with the OME guys or potential buyers. I drove up to Overlander Monday to pick up some shocks. ARB is back ordered for a while, and I wanted them now! I got home and was checking them out, and noticed the fronts (N65) had 2 different seals. That seemed funny to me so I pulled off the sticker and WOW!
    I had (1) N65-Firm and (1)N26F-Soft, but the boxes said N65.
So I called ARB, and they shipped out (1) N65 FED-X, because I had an appointment today at 9:00 a.m for installation. This could have been a nightmare if I didn't catch this, so I guess it's wise to pull the sticker and see if you have the same ones. I can't believe I waited 53k miles to do this. Tires next! Oh, the owner (Ken) at Overlander has a 99 lifted w/LT 265's, real nice. See ya!

What happens with the ride quality and speedometer reading if I switch from P 245x70x16 to LT 245x75x16 ? Thanks for the info
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
with such a narrow tire. If you want to go to 75s I'd go to 265s. Here is a calculator that will tell you what happens to the speedo.

    http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

i'm getting 265-70s or 275-70s when i have to replace.

Just got something in the mail from Isuzu today. It's a certificate from Isuzu, for a discount on Isuzu brand accessories purchased from Isuzu dealers. It's not valid on replacement parts, wear items, warranty work, etc. Things like running boards, bug shields, etc. are the intended items.

    Discount is as follows:

    Purchase price Discount amt.
    $25.00-49.99 $5.00
    $50-74.99 $10.00
    $75-$99.99 $15.00
    $100+ $20.00

Certificate says one per person per month. Expiration is 12/31/2002. If anybody is interested, I can mail you my certificate. I don't foresee needing any Isuzu brand accessories in the near future.

It's been, what, two weeks since I installed the Sway-A-Way torsion bars. Haven't been driving a lot of miles, just to work and back, mostly. I have been curious if there would be a change in the springs as they break in, which is usually the case with new springs.

Well, in the last couple of days I have noticed that the bars seem to be mellowing a bit, and feel better than ever. I noticed I am smiling a lot more now when I drive, so it's got to be good!

Anyone install 80/100 Watt bulbs? Did you notice a marked improvement? How about Xenon? Are those even available for the Trooper? I used the sylvania 9004XV ("extra vision") before, they were incrementally brighter, but not super.

I want to upgrade my bulbs this weekend and am looking for feedback.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    Http://isuzu-suvs.com

I have 80/100s in mine. They made some improvement, worth the $20 it cost for Hellas. I also upgraded my 55w H3 Fogs to 100w H3 Fogs which helped somewhat. My Hella 4000s however with 5watt city lights and 130w bulbs are awsome for mountain and night driving. I have them hooked up to my highbeam switch which is very nice.

I'm also planning on going with HID replacements which are setup for conversions from non-HIDs but have to get the $450 first.

  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
with the Fuses or wiring? I think the standard setup is set to handle 8 Amps? Don't the 100W bulbs use close to that amount of power?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
If anything the wiring harness wouldn't be able to handle it. I do 80% of my driving at night and have had mine in for about 1.5yrs w/o a problem, so I'm not too concerned.

  • zman21zman21 Member Posts: 46
i too have these lights for a year now....no problems so far. i got the 80/100w Xenon blue from a japanese aftermarket specialty store for $39. big difference from stock and sylvanias....the closest you can get to HID.
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
Does anyone know if there are any laws against running 80/100 bulbs?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
It's probably illegal, but chances of getting caught in a trooper is unlikely because we have such a poor reflector system. :(

    -mike
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
did you get your lights from paisan? I want to order a pair today. I am tired of going on holiday road trips and driving home with poor standard lights.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Susquehana motorsports, check out Http://isuzu-suvs.com for a link. Call up Ken over there and he'll direct you to some good 80/100w bulbs.

    -mike

  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
Ken talked me out of the 80/100w bulbs. Well not completely out of them, but he didn't think I would get the performance increase I wanted and would blind other drivers. He didn't talk me completely out of them, but enough to sleep on it.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Yeah Ken is a good guy, he won't try to sell you snake oil. Your best bet is to just use the IPFs when there is no oncoming traffic. Our reflectors and lenses just plain suck.

    -mike
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
am going to do. My IPF lights were aimed somewhat low since installation, since I really only planned on using them off-road, I didn't adjust them further. Tonight I re-aimed them against the garage, and took them for a test drive. Much better for on-road use. Now I need to get off-road at night to really see how they perform with the new settings.
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
I went to PEP boys and got a set of sylvania 9004 XV. They advertiswe 20% brighter light, which is hard to do without more power, but they are much whiter, and seem to reflect significantly better than stock. The best part, $7.99 each. They supposedly put out 700/1200 lumens and are street legal.
  • keepontroopinkeepontroopin Member Posts: 297
Can anyone tell me what the difference is between a $250 pair of IPF or Hella lights and a set from Wal-mart that are the same wattage that sell for $40 - $50?
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
were $165 from the web, I don't remember the site off hand. The bulbs are 130 Watt. They are good. I don't know what the difference is? Maybe it is because the IPF's come with the wiring, mounting brackets, possibly better reflectors and "proven technology?". Maybe I got ripped off? I like them, they work well, and I think they look cool. I can't ask for more than that.
