I put Alpine 5.5" in my rear cut outs and they fit fine. I had to drill new holes which was easy(just hold speaker up to area and trace holes before drilling). I've heard of others putting the Polks in so it should be no problem. Sound with 5.5's is considerably better.
  • gpm5gpm5 Member Posts: 785
thanks. Now that I've seen the specs, I think the Alpines would be a better speaker.

just got a Lim 2001 demo at a steal... but, did not have owner manual for CD changer. Does CD have random function; all I've been able to do is to play cds sequentially. thanks.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
It will only play em sequentially.

gpm5, I wouldn't buy speakers based on the specs. You never know if the data are accurate, plus even if they are, that does not mean that the speaker with better specs will actually sound better.

By the way, the Polk speakers are/were on closeout at Circuit City. I think the EX602 is $70/pr. and the EX502 was $60. For the money these speakers sounded way better than anything else I listened to in the same price range. Several salespeople have told me the same thing.
  • gpm5gpm5 Member Posts: 785
Yes, I was going to get them there. Don't know if the price went up--they had only one boxed set left. The Alpines were the same price but they had none in stock. I'd like to listen and compare but usually can't find the two in the same system to compare. 70 Hz is the low freq response on the EX502, and that doesn't seem that good to me.
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
I am out. I would rather buy a "better" one for $300. Thanks for the link though.

Just acquired Jensen 6.8" flip down tv and Mobile Authority DVD player. Cool stuff.....but now I need to have it installed!! Very expensive I'm guessing. Anyone have any reasonable contacts in NJ/Metro NY/Eastern PA/DE for install? Thanks in advance. 2000 "S" w/40K - running great
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
in Jenkintown PA. They are good. I had them install my IPF lights, getting the wires through the firewall seemed too hard (until I actually saw how they did it, drilled a hole through it and sealed it with epoxy). That is who I recommend, they might cost a few dollars more, but you will probably only need to make one trip (because it will work the first time) and they back-up their work.

Had a Pioneer DVD player, Clarion & Audiovox monitors + wireless headset done at Gino's Auto Sound & Security(732)356-4466 in Piscataway early 2000. Excellent work.

Alternatives are the 'chains' ...Circuit City, Best Buy etc..

I just put 5.25" Boston Acoustics coaxials in the rear of my Trooper. Pretty easy, just had to drill new holes.

Suprisingly, they are more efficient than the old whizzer cone speakers, had to adjust the fader a little. Definitely a broader range too, though most of the bass still comes from the front.
  • bluedevilsbluedevils Member Posts: 2,554
Well put some good speakers in front, too!
  • sdc2sdc2 Member Posts: 780
Yep, still trying to decide what to do. I bought some very nice $300 Boston Acoustics component speakers (separate 1" and 6" speakers with crossover) on clearance, hoping they would be a drop in install. That was a little optimistic. The store wants $80-90 for install, which may be worth it, but my alternative is to just buy much cheaper 6" coaxs and leave the original tweeters in there, and sell the component speakers on Ebay or something.
  • gpm5gpm5 Member Posts: 785
Do the 6 inch fit up front? What's the tricky part, the tweeter install?
  • bluedevilsbluedevils Member Posts: 2,554
My experience/opinion is that the factory tweeters work/sound fine with the Polk EX602s that I dropped into the front factory locations. Sure, the Polks have tweeters too but I think it sounds good.
  • sdc2sdc2 Member Posts: 780
I think the speakers will fit fairly well, the "problem" is in the wiring. The crossover (if you can call it that) for the factory speakers consists of a resistor inline next to the tweeter. You can see it if you pop off the triangular piece that houses the tweeter. This is the same kind of crossover that cheap home audio rack systems use, as I remember from my days selling audio, oh so long ago.

Lazy @ss that I am, I had hoped that I could just re-use the factory wiring, but upon looking at it I am not willing to use their setup with the Bostons. By contrast, the crossover that came with the Bostons is a box of electronics the size of an Altoids tin, one for each side.

Which leaves me with two choices. Rewire with the new crossovers for the new speakers, or bag that idea and go with a 6" coax and leave the factory tweeters alone.

I got such a good deal on these components I am leaning toward having going ahead and having them professionally installed. They retailed for $300 originally, I got them for $110 on clearance/open box.
  • bluedevilsbluedevils Member Posts: 2,554
That's a great deal. Even if you need to pay someone to install them, you'll be better off than with a 6" 2-way and the factory tweeters.

I have the rs 9000 on a 00 trooper with 265,s with 8" wheels. I have seen several people using the ome springs on the rear with the stock torsion bars back around post 500. Seems like noone has complained very much about the softer bars up front after raising them. I love the 9000, especially after taking the trooper up to knebec pass Durango in June. The last 4 miles was very rough and tecnical for a flat lander. I had 5 adults in the trooper and put the shock on 1 and really smoothed out the big rocks and dip. The problem is the thing still wants to go through the travel in the back really fast which is annoying even with the shocks on 4 all around. My question is where is the best place to purchas a set of these things. And are there any unacceptable conditions these things create. I do not want to make it beat you to death but understand that it will make a more tawnt ride.

my OMEs didn't make it considerably stiffer, but raised it about 1.25 inches, and when loaded the progressive rate springs kicked in nicely to prevent the back from going too low.

Did you ever get your Sway-A-Way T-Bars installed? If so, what do ya think so far?
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
I am starting to think about upgrading the suspension in my truck. I am pretty sure about the OME springs, this will eventually allow me to add additional weight in the rear, possibly steel bumper someday, at minimum more load capacity. I am concerned about the front. A bull bar is only about 90 lbs, so new shocks really helped there, but what about adding a winch? What can I do to add additional capacity to the front? Do I need to? Can I just crank up the torsion bars? Or maybe add stronger torsion bars? I don't know what is necessary? I am starting to think ahead about future modifications, which may never happen, but I want everything to work together if they do.
  • sdc2sdc2 Member Posts: 780
the Sway-Aways haven't arrived yet. Not sure why it is taking so long. I have been getting weekly updates from Dan at hotrod-offroad.com, but they are just waiting for them to arrive from the manufacturer. At least he is communicating...nothing worse than no word whatsoever.

    Hi every body,
I've just replaced my stock shocks with Rancho 5000. I'm very happy with them. As sdc2 mentioned in Message 1113, the new shocks make a vast improvement.
For those who don't do a lot of off road nor towing often will certainly be happy with Rancho 5000. A set of 4 cost only $153 at 4wheelparts.com including handling and free shipping, plus $48 installed by Pepboys.
  • raydahsraydahs Member Posts: 449
FYI, I called Sway-A-Way today and checked p/n 1549, they're at the painters and will be out in a couple of days. I tried to go through them direct, with no luck. What is Dan charging these days?
  • gpm5gpm5 Member Posts: 785
How stiff is the ride with those. Is it worth the 9000 if the 5000 give the best overall ride anyways?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    IIRC the 5000 = 9000s on setting 4 or 5,

I personally find setting 5 too harsh for daily driving. I only use 5 on the rear for towing, and 5/5 for off-roading. Daily driving I use 3/3 or even 2/3.

No way! R5000 is equivalent to Setting #3 on R9000 (check this Web site: www.rancho.cc) I'll get back with you on this after I retrieve Paisan's remark on R5000 equivalent setting.

Anyways, I'm sure they are not much stiffer than the stock. I pulled and pushed both R5000 and the stocks. The stock can be pushed so easily, with no effort at all.

That means R5000 resists more in compression resulting in less diving during braking and less rolling when turning. Also, less vibration under cross wind. I can feel the differences.

R9000 differentiate from R5000 for adjustability. They can be adjusted when going off road or towing, the front and back can be adjusted differently. So, if you don't think you'll do those thing often, I believe R5000 are good for you. I'm positive you'll like them. If not (very very unlikely), you can get refund, www.4wheelparts.com offers satisfactory guarantee.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Ok, so setting 3 would be perfect for the on-road driver. That's what I run mine at. Ireally like the adjustability, but like you said if there is never a towing or off-road need, then the 5000s will work out fine.

    gpm5:
    Read Message 311 by radman6. R5000 equals to Setting #3 on R9000.
  • ilitilit Member Posts: 71
    Hey,
I didn't disagree with you. I mentionned first about adjustability, didn't I. I rarely go off road or towing so I don't want to spend almost twice as much for R9000 ($37 vs $67).
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
If you are looking for non-adjustable shocks, the OME N65/N15 set is great.
  • gpm5gpm5 Member Posts: 785
I do go offroad and tow some. For $120 more it seems adjustability is worth it. Paisan, how easy is it to make the adjustment?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
It takes me less than 1 minute to adjust all 4 of them, maybe 2 minutes if I need to use a pair of pliers due to crud on the knobs. The rears are easier than the fronts but all around pretty easy. If you want you can also get an in-cab controller, then you can vary them on the fly.

Ok this message is to let all of you guys with bug deflectors in on a little secret. In the past there have been many posts about noise the bug deflectors make while driving. Some have referred to the noise as the deflector slapping the front of the car. Well actually the noise is not coming from the deflector rather it is coming from the plastic molding strip on the windshield pillars. They are under cut and the air is now hitting them differently because the deflector is creating turbulence on the hood and windshield area.

Ok here is what i did to correct this problem. In past posts there were people who said they had either put silicon in the under cut area of the molding strip or actually put black electrical tape over the strip. I didn't want to do either of those since the tape is ugly and falls off and the silicon is somewhat permanent and would have to be scraped off in the event your windshield needed replaced.

I was replacing a screen door screen this weekend and had bought some rubber splining to replace the spline in my screen door. I had some left over and a light went off in my head.....hey this would work perfectly on my windshield. I cut two pieces to length and simply stuffed them under the under cut area of the molding on the windshield pillars. Worked great and if I ever want to take them out all I have to do is pry a corner out and pull the remainder out. If you have a bug guard and also experience the annoying "slapping" noise give it a try. A package of screen spline should cost you less than $2 at the local hardware store (I paid $1.99).

Hope this helps some of you.

You'll have to email Dan at hotrod-offroad.com for a firm quote, but he is charging me $210, shipping included. That is considerably cheaper than Calmini quoted me ($249 + shipping).

I have read a lot on here about upgrading bushings on the trooper? Where are these on the truck? What does performance enhancements do you get from this modification?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
They are on the sway bars, they will allow the vehicle to have less body roll and nose dive, etc. Hopefully.

I received my OME springs from matt this afternoon and spent about an hour putting them on. They raised the back 1.5 with quater tank and 1.25 filled up. I raised the front to match. Much nicer ride and stability and really nice look with the ride height. Very happy. Put the rs9000 on 4 up front and 3 in the back. I dont know how the height would look with stock wheels and tires but with the 8x16 and 265/70/16 it looks great. Thanks Paisan for the info. I did not talk to Matt but ordered on line. Took 7 days to get here. Troopers are!
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Matt is a good friend. He's quality stuff. Do the $20 JC whitney poly bushings and you'll see an even better improvement.

I have been told the torsion bars will ship out to me next week...
  • beer47beer47 Member Posts: 185
is installed w/ dvd mounted under drivers seat. Hopefully this will keep kids occupied on the next trip. TV reception is iffy like in any limo but the dvd player rocks, sound and picture top drawer. Equipment was reasonable but the installation was very expensive; but done right. I went to the guy recommended to me on this board (Piscataway, NJ). Let's see step rails, tinted rear windows, Mobile TV, hands free mounted phone, could I be having a mid-life crisis!? I have not even started with the bushings and shocks like most of you guys!! Hey, my wife has QVC.

sdc2 - Looking forward to your report on Sway-Away's. I had an interesting conversation with a guy at ARB while checking availability of the shocks and springs. They're doing a project Trooper. They did the suspension in stages, first he drove it stock for a month, then added shocks only, drove it for a month, then added springs and torqued the (stock) T-Bars up an inch. He highly recommends that the springs and shocks are done at the same time, the springs make that much of a difference IHO. The project truck has way too much to list on here, but can bee seen at http://www.planetisuzoo.com/ in a few weeks. I'm going to hold off until your report, and possibly buy everything as a package deal.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
They are as strong as ARB and 1/2 the weight, also they match up with the fender flares better. Oh and I sell them as well :)

The Project Trooper looks decent, but I have never had a need for a rack, and the snorkel is a bit over the top. (I can get those snorkels as well)

As for suspension, I'm loving the Rancho 9Ks + JC Whitney Poly Bushings + OME rear springs.

Paisan - You've seen it? I looked on Planet Isuzu, do you have to be a member?

Someone e-mailed me the pic. I'll check for it tonight and post it.

  • raydahsraydahs Member Posts: 449
to see it. From what I was told, it's at Isuzu America now getting tricked out for the SEMA Show in Las Vegas at the end of October. Do you have any connections to get pics of that too?

I also got the impression that those two crazy guys on "Sport Truck Connection" are going to get thier hands on it, maybe they'll do a show on it, they did one on the Rodeo.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Last pic I saw was yesterday or 2 days ago. It is a silver LS model with a silver Arb bumper, black roof rack, OME springs in the rear, cranked t-bars, and black snorkel. Other than that it looked 100% stock. Also had some square IPF lights as well. It is supposed to get some tires and rims IIRC. I am almost definitely going to go with an ECB bumper bar setup in silver sometime this spring, and Pirelli 275-70-16 tires as well, and some of matt from http://independent4x.com side step/boulder bars.
