Have you looked in the owners manual? I recall reading something in there about disabling the DTRL. I would go read it myself for you. However, I'm on vacation and have better things to do, such as browsing the stupid Edmunds message boards. Good Luck!

Actually I haven't read the owners manual as I don't have it yet. I get to pickup my Avalon next week. I was trying to get a jump start.

I have a 2001 Avalon XLS with, to me, an annoying problem related to the fresh/inside air button. The manual recommends outside air for both winter heating as well as summer AC use. However, each time the ignition is turned off the mode changes to inside air. This seems to be contradictory to recommendations. The setting does not "stay put." I'm having to make the manual change to outside air every time I use the vehicle. Anyone else notice this condition?

I don't understand why the owner's manual would make a recommendation either way regarding inside or outside air. You should chose what is best for you. For Summer AC cooling purposes, using "inside" air means you are recirculating the already cooled air. This is less work for the AC and usually results in better gas mileage as well as less drain on engine power. If you live in an especially hot climate, this may be desirable.

If you smoke or have other reasons you'd want to get the inside air "out", then the "outside" air mode would perhaps be best.

Strangely, my car (not an Avalon) defaults to the outside air mode, and I prefer to have it on recirculating mode.

My rear mirror interfered with the driver side sun visor. I look thru the windshield looks like the rea view mirror is not seated all the way down to the windshile mount. How do you seat the mirror all the way down? I can't find any set screw to loosen it.

My 2000 XLS is approaching 15,000 miles. I replaced the AC filter today. The job took me less than 30 minutes. I ordered the replacement filter from www.toyotaparts4u.com Instructions packed with the filter were excellent. However, instructions said to remove 3 screws and 2 bolts but my XLS has 4 screws and 1 bolt. Once I had the glove box removed, I decided not to disconnect the disable switch for the trunk release - it just wasn't necessary. Reassembly was very easy. Judging from how dirty the filter was that I replaced, I plan to do future replacements at 10,0000 mile intervals. Only tools needed were a flat blade and philips head screwdriver.

I thought I reaD previously that the AC filter replacement was required only for the XLS as this filter was a pollen filter. Can someone confirm if this filter change is required on the XL.
  • markxdmarkxd Member Posts: 4
The XL does not have the dust / pollen filter installed as standard equipment. However, there is a spot for it to be installed. I had the dealler install this filter in my XL when I bought the car.

I have a 2000 XL. It appears that I have some oil leaking from the front of the engine, but I can not see where. It is a very small amount and does not require refilling the oil. I also have some paint chips off the front top of the hood. The color is Lunar Mist. Anyone else have these problems?

    thanks

I have a new problem with my 1999 avalon. When I put my foot on the brakes my steering wheel starts wobbling (shaking). This happens only when I apply the brakes. Is this a problem with my front brakes or is this a problem with wheel alignment. Since I have not done any wheel alignment so far and lam at 50000 miles.

Steering wheel vibration when the brake pedal's depressed is usually caused by a warped front brake rotor or corrosion buildup on the edges of the rotor.

When the brakes are applied the first time I hear
a slight clunk. I live on a slight hill and when
I back out of my driveway and then apply my brakes
when going forward, this is when I hear the brake
clunk (not real loud) Only happens once each day
Does anyone have a similar problem. Have not taken it to the dealer to be checked. It has less than 5000 miles on it, and I bought it new

Occasionally my 2000 Avalon XL will not maintain idle upon startup. It will fail many times in a role (no "Check Engine" light, so no help from computer codes), but we drive it anyway "two-footed" until highway speed. After a while it fixes itself, but problem returns 2K to 3K miles later.

Dealer has no clue (he doesn't see many 2000 Avalons with 84K miles). We change (synthetic) oil regularly and use premium gas.

Incidentally, we have had no other problems with this car and have had good luck with other Toyotas (85 Cresida, worn out @ 295K miles; 84 Cressida 230K miles still going strong, but dead A/C; and 85 Camry, totalled while running perfectly at 215K miles).

    Any Ideas out there?

I have the same problem. It's driving me nuts. The dealer says it's a idle regulator valve. He was gracious enough to put it on order. Expected arrival date? UNKNOWN? It's on "national backorder". He offered me a rental for an indefinite amount of time. The car is now Toyota unreliable....indefinitely. Any got any ideas?

I have a 2001 Avalon. It is our second Avalon as our identical 2000 was totaled in an accident. I have noticed that our rear trunk lid's metal skin is so thin that a small acorn can dent it. I have no apparent dents on the hood or the roof, just the trunk. On our 2000 we had seen a small dent or two but thought that someone had accidently dropped something on it while in service and just did not tell us. Now I believe that since the trunks are identical on both years, that maybe the metal that is being used is too thin.
I have reported this to Toyota and am being told that this is an "environmental" issue and not a warranty issue. In 37 years of car ownership I have never had a small acorn leave a dent like hail will.
I am wondering: Does anyone else has a similar experience with the trunks getting dented easily?
    Let me know.
