We ended up with a 2010 Sonata as our rental this week in San Antonio. Very nice ride! I really liked the interior too. Car was very quiet both while driving and idling in the parking lot. You couldnt tell it was on. Power was definitely underwhelming though especially with the AC on. So with an extra 25hp, 16 ft/lb of torque and a hundred plus pounds lighter, I am hoping the 2011 version has more oomph although I think I am holding out for the turbo Sonata and Optima to test drive.

My 2011 manual Sonata gets 5.6 L/km (42 miles/US gal) highway a 110 km/h and about 9.9 L/km ( 24 miles/US gal) in the city. This is better than advertised for highway but not for city. The USA promised to convert to S.I. in 1980. Isn't it about time they join the rest of the world.

Not much into learning new things, I guess.

It's just that I never really cared for fiction very much.. ;) .

I guess I am surprised the moderator hasn't stepped in. First you say I do not tell the truth. Second, you say it again. I would think calling a poster a liar would deserve a reprimand or being banned from the forum.

Anyone know if the turbo is available now? What is the price?
  • mikemartinmikemartin Member Posts: 205
2011 GLS Automatic quoted to me in writing (email) for:

$188 including tax sign & drive, with $0 down, on 36 month lease

    $18,716 purchase plus TTL.

Manual purchase was $200 less, but more on the lease.

I didn't step in because, believe it or not, at 7pm my time, I am not always working. However, I've really had enough of this - please don't insinuate that another member is lying. Please don't tell other members that they deserve to be banned.

Everyone taken care of? Good. Move on.

If leasing worked for me, I'd be seriously considering that.

mikemartin: Not sure if you meant to respond to bobbo555 or not but he's asking about the turbo.

bobbo555: The turbo is not available yet, due out in "fall" of this year. No official word on it's pricing that I'm aware of. I'm personally guessing between 26 and 30k depending on trims and options.

I'm confused here... Your Sonata uses 5.6 litres of gas per kilometer???? Or am I reading that wrong? I think an M1A1 tank gets better mileage. About a gallon per mile. Maybe two gallons. Bob D.

I have noticed several posts about security alarms going off for no apparent reason. This has happened 3 times to me (that I know about) in the month that I have owned my new Sonata. My wife and I recently were on a 350 mile trip in Colorado and we stopped at a rest stop In Eagle for about 30 minutes. As we sat in a shady spot about 75 yards away from the car, the security alarm went off twice (20 minutes apart) for no obvious reason. It was a hot day, but there were very gusty winds. Perhaps the winds were setting off the alarm? Perhaps I was accidentally pushing the alarm button on the fob?

Otherwise, the car was a total joy on this trip through the mountains. I was worried that it would be underpowered in the high passes, but it performed beautifully. If the trip computer can be believed, we averaged 39 mpg on this trip. Fortunately those gusty winds were tail winds.

I had a similar problem and I found that mixing the key block with small change was causing the alarm to go off. Haven't had a problem since I keep the key block in a seperate pocket with no other metal.

The one complaint I have about the Sonata is the key pod, its bigger than my cellphone.

When I first got my Limited, I also had an alarm problem.
I would get to work, go in, and people coming in after me said my alarm was going off. It turned out to be the switch for the hood. The dealer adjusted it and ordered a new one to be sure. Haven't had a problem since, almost 2 months now.

What dealership did you get this quote from? That seems like a hot deal. Looking to purchase a GLS in a few weeks.
  • mikemartinmikemartin Member Posts: 205
Numbers are the same for me at any dealership b/c I get Hyundai Partner Supplier discount of whatever 3% of MSRP is taken off invoice price.
  • carzzzcarzzz Member Posts: 282
I think the OP means to write 5.6L/100km
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
If in fact the $188/month is a sign-and-drive lease, with everything included i.e. first payment, and all taxes/license/fees, that is an incredible deal. It's about $60 less than the best sign-and-drive lease on a 2011 Sonata GLS that I've seen in my area. And it's lower than sign-and-drive leases I've seen recently on smaller cars like the Corolla LE, Civic LX, and Mazda3.

In fact, $188/month isn't much more than the depreciation on a car like that over 3 years. Hard to go wrong with it.
  • mikemartinmikemartin Member Posts: 205
Backy, the $188 is sign and drive, but does not include title or tags.

Tax is built in to it.

If I didn't get the Hyundai Partner Supplier Discount, the same GLS Auto would be $239 or $249 per month (I forget which amount), sign and drive w/$0 down.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Depending on what title and tags cost in your area (for me it would run around $350 or so), that's still a great deal. Are you going to jump on it?

$249 with everything included is the best I've seen locally. Including title and tags, your deal is still about $50 less per month.

My bedroom is just outside where the car is parked and several times I've looked outside to see that I've accidentally opened the trunk by mashing the key fob up against a chair arm or something while in my pocket. This is because the buttons stick up too much from the casing, which makes it easy to do accidentally. Ever since then I just leave the keys on the desk when I'm going to be sitting on that chair - problem solved.

I purchased a 2011 Sonata Limited in mid Feb. In late March, I had a power steering problem that would lose all electronic power steering. This happened 3 different times. The engine and all other functions worked fine except for steering. I would pull to side of rode, turn off car and power steering came back on. After the 3rd time I drove straight to dealership with no power steering. Cause of problem could not be found by tech, they called Hyundai tech line are were advised to ordered/replaced a new steering column. This back order took about 2 weeks. I have been drive car since and have no problems.

FYI: I looked at different forums back in March and there were no other reports of any power steering problems so I just considered this as my car's problem. I looked today at forum and I see others had some type of power steering problems too. This is only reason posting.

I have to set up and pair my phone everytime I turn off my car and get back in. For some reason my cell and bluetooth in the car don't stay connected. What am I doing wrong, or is this the way it works? The bluetooth function is on in my cell. If I turn the function off on my phone and then back on it tells me divice is out of range.
  • jlflemmonsjlflemmons Member Posts: 2,242
I cannot speak to a Sonata, but our 2010 Tucson doesn't have that problem, in fact, just the opposite. It will grab my wifes cell signal if she is upstairs in the house on her cell, and I pull the Tucson into the garage!

Rather startling when you are pulling in and your wifes voice suddenly comes over the speakers, "Hey, what are you doing?" Scared the bejeebers out of me the first time it happened!

I have read in some of the other bluetooth related forums that some have had issues with specific phones failing to connect automatically.

I haven't had access to a computer for a while.
I did not and do not intend to destroy Hyundai's reputation. I will state again...I only want people to be aware of what happened to me and my family. I hope that no one else has to go through the same thing.
There may have been twists between posts, in which should be considered additional details. None of what I have stated was fabricated, and I suggest that someone contact the Hyundai Corp. again. When we spoke with them, we were very upset to hear that they had no record of what happened to us in "their" system! They are finally investigating the dealership. No...I will not give the dealership's name. Do you really believe that they will tell you anything? They wouldn't tell us the truth, what makes you so special? You would not believe how frustrating it is, just to get someone to really note the problem in a file. The lady we talked with said that this will not stop with her and she will be contacting us once she gets answers. It has been weeks and we haven't heard from her at all. I will be calling her again soon, and I wonder if she will have record of the emails and phone calls...let alone our case number. No I will not give you the case number. I am afraid and unsure about giving out certain information. Unfortunately, it happens to be the information you demand. I am happy to see that some have actually contacted Hyundai about this. The more people who contact them, the better chance that someone important enough in the Hyundai Corp. will find out what is going on.
As for the video....I will not be bullied into posting it on you tube. I almost did....then realized that I was just feeding the bully what he/she wanted. If I did that, then Hyundai would get it. They don't need to see it....After all, they already know what happened...if not through me, then through the others on this forum who have stated they did. It will be posted when I feel that Hyundai has really done enough of an investigation. You do not have to believe me. However, you do not have to be rude and accuse me of making the whole thing up. The name calling and sarcastic remarks are ridiculous.
I do not have a lot of experience with computers, nor how these forums work. I am learning. Please excuse my ignorance of it. I did not think for a second that people would attack. I should have considered that some people are very defensive about their favorite auto brands, and didn't. I was just so focused and angry about what happened to us. It was selfish of me to just jump in and force my experience on everyone and everywhere. I have learned my lesson. I have learned how nasty people can be. I have also learned that I have to prove before trying to warn or help anyone. This is a sad world. :(

I'm glad to hear that they replaced the column. The power steering unit has a safety feature which will shut down the power steering as soon as there is any problem. It worked. This is great news! Can you please tell me around how many miles did you have on the car at that time?
    Thanks!!

Can't be 100% sure about this, but his failure and your failure don't sound the same. You said your vehicle jerked and pretty much, in your description, forced you into another lane with oncoming traffic. His complaint was that he just lost power steering, no jerking into oncoming traffic or anything. I think that maybe your vehicle just lost power steering too, probably while you were making a turn and you couldn't steer the car the way he did and lost control. I may be wrong, but I know people who had similar situations with their GM cars with the eletric steering.

No one has accused you of fabrication, but people want to see the PROOF of what you have described.

No...I will not give the dealership's name.
As a potential buyer, I nor anyone in the forum do not want to end up with the car(s) you've described in your own statment that 4 -5 cars had a similar issue. If you're really concern about the public safety, what's so big deal???

As for the video....I will not be bullied into posting it on you tube

YOU were the one who said about the video and YOU were the one who said you would post!! and now, you're claiming that you were bullied??

I am happy to see that some have actually contacted Hyundai about this

So far, Hyundai has not received information you've described.

you do not have to be rude and accuse me of making the whole thing up.
Once again, no one has EVER accused you of anyting, but People want to see the PROOF of your serious claim

that's clearly an utter fairy tale. It seems like other manufacturers are getting really desperate to derail Sonata sales.

The statement in italics was a few posts after mommyt''s original post and even insinuates that she is a rep for another manufacturer(will the paranoia never end?). There were more like this soon after. So, yes people did accuse her of farbrication. I'm not sticking up for her story and personally feel that emotions have tainted the facts in this to some degree but do feel she was treated pretty badly.

What made me have doubts was the statement that the car pulled. Power steering will not steer the car, nor will losing power steering. It just makes it take about 2x-3X more effort to turn the wheel, but is perfectly safe. I've driven lots of cars with no power steering or broken PS, and it's not really bad.

Now,,, I'm not saying it's impossible that it steered on its own, but it would be like pushing a rope.

If you had a video completely proving your post and discounting all the naysayers, why WOULDNT you post it? and if you were interested in public safety, wouldn't you WANT Hyundai to see it so they are made aware of your alleged problem as soon as possible? I lot of people have raised valid questions about your story and you have not provided us with a single actual answer, detail, or piece of evidence - naturally we remain very skeptical.

I'm not sure, just going by the name. What does it matter to you what I call the person?
  • schdyschdy Member Posts: 233
You didn't have to get up tight. I was just trying to make a point that very little is known about Forum Posters so the information they supply is always questionable unless they supply documented proof. For example I own a 2011 Hyundai SE but unless I provide some proof You can't be sure. I have posted photos with my installed mudguards but again I could have taken them from another owner. However I have no axe to grind with Hyundai or any other car and my posting here is to help others and to learn anything new about my car. I also have a case number with Hyundai questioning the power steering problem reported but when I posted it the Forum monitor removed my post. To date Hyundai has not been able to substantiate the power steering failure of the 5 autos at a single dealer. Therefore I feel more than happy with my purchase and have no worries of a serious safety defect in the Sonata.
  • schdyschdy Member Posts: 233
I was just curious that after the Dealer refunded your money on your Sonata with the steering problem which car did you finaly purchase and how do you like it. Also any info on what the Dealer did with the other 5 cars with the same defect.
  • schdyschdy Member Posts: 233
Did you try to get the Dealer to refund your purchase. Others have been succesfull getting their money refunded with such a serious defect. You might want to relate this to your Dealer.

I have a 2009 Sonata 4 cyl. 5 speed auto trans. with 7,000 miles on it. I don't think my gas mileage is high enough. On 2 recent 600 miles trips, in near ideal conditions, (road and weather) at 65-70 MPH I got only 24 MPG. I get 20 MPG driving around town.I spoke to my dealer. He said that the EPA estimate is 23-27 MPG (combined driving) and that my mileage sounds "about right". I told him that I get 32 MPG on the highway with my 2000 Elantra (4 cyl., 5 speed manual with 145,000 miles on it).He said that I would get better mileage with a manual trans. I told him I didn't see what the difference should be once you reach highway speed in 5th gear with either car. He said had no complaints from other Sonata owners and didn't know what their actual mileage was. I wasn't happy with the dealer's response. I have 2 friends with Sonatas. One a 2010 4 cyl. says he gets 31 MPG (combined town & country and highway). He recently got 31 MPG at 70-80 MPH on a trip from Pennsylvania to Chicago. My other friend with a 2007 Sonata 4 cyl. says he gets 32 MPG on the highway.
I wonder if their is a problem with my car. This is the first new car I ever had.

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    Charlie

24 mpg does seem too low for that car on the highway. Have you taken those same trips in other cars, and if so what mpg did you get?

One thing to check is, find a stretch of highway that is flat and allows you to cruise at the speed limit without stopping. Reset the mpg computer at the start of the trip and drive for as long as you can without stopping. Use a very light touch on the gas pedal; do NOT use the cruise control. You should easily get over 30 mpg on that kind of trip (if under 70 mph). If you don't, I'd suspect there is something wrong. Of course, be sure the tire pressure is set to the recommended settings.

I think your dealer is wrong about the 2009 Sonata getting better mpg with a stick on the highway than the 5AT. There should be little difference if any, and that is borne out on the EPA ratings.

BTW, you might want to post this in the 2009 Sonata thread vs. this one, you might get more responses.
  • schdyschdy Member Posts: 233
I can tell you that on my 2006 six cyl Sonata my gas mileage increased substantialy when I reached 10,000 miles.
I was told this is called the break-in period.
  • kukoofishykukoofishy Member Posts: 11
Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I'll have to wait. Too bad my dealer didn't mention anything like that. I asked him about a 10,000 mile "break in" period and he said he didn't think that was the problem.

Any other comments about poor mileage on a Sonata will be welcomed.

    Thanks again.
  • kukoofishykukoofishy Member Posts: 11
Thanks for the reply. I don't do many long trips but I'll try your advice. I'm new to this site but I'll try to get on the 2009 thread.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
What I've found on Hyundai engines is that the fuel economy does improve markedly with time, with the biggest improvement in the first 1500 miles or so. But with 7k miles on the car, you should be getting much better highway FE than 24 mpg, IMO. Since you bought it used (yes?), there's always the possibility of some problem. You might have the car thoroughly checked by a mechanic you trust, and if a warranty issue is found, you can always take it to the dealer for repair.
  • jlflemmonsjlflemmons Member Posts: 2,242
Tire pressures? I found a case where all four tires on a car were about 5lbs low due to a bad tire pressure gauge. Put them back where they were supposed to be and picked up a couple of mpg.

Might not hurt to have the static timing checked and the ECM re-flashed to make sure those things are okay. Also, check the operating temp. If the thermostat is not operating correctly, the engine will run in "cool" mode, which is a bit richer and will give lower mileage.

Just a few ideas to check on if the car is running okay otherwise.
  • moontrainmoontrain Member Posts: 83
Try putting some STP fuel injector cleaner in. Dirty fuel injectors can cause lower fuel milage.
My 2005 V6 Sonata gets about 25 in and around the city and about 30 on the road.
