Try Mitchell's in Canton. I used to dealer trade with them when I sold Subaru, and I hear the VW guys are pretty good too. You can track down Rich (audi8aq) for his opinion also.
Hey folks, Have a question (for the pricing experts)... the invoice price for a 2002 GLS (loaded) Passat is 37.5K (all included), how much should I pay over this to the dealer? also, I am gettign a 2001.5 same config. for 37K (all incl.).. is it worth it? The difference being warranty? HELP ME!!!
I dont think VW charges for the colors.. be it metallic or pearl... at least in Canada.. I dont see reason why in US? Check it out... there no price on the color option
I was going by what I saw on the Carsdirect.com web page. If you select reflex silver on the 2001.5 or 2002 passat, an additonal $500 is added for the color. I would be happy if the surcharge is restricted to that particular seller.
With regard to earlier thread on factory ordering, vwguild said this:
"You should probably expect to pay a bit more for something that is custom ordered for you...just as you would with a suit or a shirt...What that exact number is will be determined by you and your VW Rep."
This doesn't jibe with edmunds.com comments on dealer holdback. (http://www.edmunds.com/advice/incentives/holdback/index.html). Since the dealer receives holdback from the manufacturer on any new car, and since the dealer is turning around and selling the car immediately, they essentially get to purchase the car below invoice and pocket the difference (this doesn't include the extra profit and amount they sell the car for over invoice). According to Edmund's this is 2% off of Base MSRP.
So, in some ways it seems as if a special factory order is more lucrative for the dealer.
A brief explanation on order pricing: VW allocates cars on a very limited basis, and it takes one of your allocations for a factory order. The factory order cycle can take an excessive amount of time, and in fact, some orders NEVER get filled. From my experiences, there is probably about a 20-30% backout rate on orders. So the dealer has used up an allocation slot on a car that may take 4-6 months to get, and then have no buyer for it! If its a nice car that they won't have trouble selling (e.g. Reflex Silver) they won't worry about that, but that makes one less silver one they would get in the normal course of events. If its not a nice car (e.g. Mojave w/Beige Leather) it is seriously worrisome to think that you specifically went out of your way to order a car that will be extremely difficult to sell.
I heard the same from a VW dealer too.. he said holdback is to offset the cost incurred by the dealer for other cars who couldn't find a buyer faster (before holdback expires).. but my question to him was.... SO? They will give you this crap not to negotiate on the price.. but I am sure there will be someone somewhere.. I just wish I find him SOON... ciao

Any feedback will be appreciated. Car is a beauty and drives so smooth.
Alumj, even though the theory that you posted sounds reasonable, I personally have found just the opposite to be true. Dealerships are usually much more anxious to sell vehicles that they physically have on their lots than they are to swap for or order a vehicle for a consumer. I think that a major reason for this is that they have to continuously pay interest on the vehicles that they have on their lots and would like to sell them as quickly as possible. Furthermore, from a dealer's perspective, a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. A lot can happen during the weeks that a consumer is waiting for their ordered vehicle. Most dealers would rather register a sale immediately rather than run the risk of having their customer back out of their deal. Not only that, but many consumers who order vehicles do so because they are looking for a vehicle with an unusual combination of options that can not normally be found on a dealer's lot. If for some reason the consumer who has ordered this vehicle with an unusual color or set of options backs out of their deal, they are then stuck with an undesirable model that may sit on their lot for quite a while. So generally speaking, I think that consumers will be able to negotiate the lowest prices on vehicles that dealers physically have on their lots already.
will the 2002 passat come with a cd player standard? just spent an hour with a salesman on a glx v6 4motion but no cd and he said he'd have to try and locate one. price was (with a cd on back order for 3mnths) 31k before taxes. (approx 800 over invoice) is this good? bad? indiferent? all help greatfully received. thanks
I've been researching purchasing a New Passat, but I can't decide between 2001.5/2002. I know I can get a better price on 2001.5, but want to do more research. Can someone please post what the differences are (however small or cosmetic) between the 2001.5 and 2002 Passats. Thanks. Much appreciated.
I am thinking of buying a 2001 GLS 4cyl turbo manual Passat with leather, Monsoon stereo, luxury package, and Homelink with 7K miles. The owner will take 22K. It seems like a good deal - what do you think? Also, any special problems that happen to new Passats that I should be aware of? Thanks.
Vikingfan2, the biggest difference between the 2001.5 and the 2002 Volkswagen Passat is the warranty. For the 2002 model year, all new Volkswagen vehicles will come standard with an increased four-year/50,000 mile (whichever occurs first) bumper-to- bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. The warranty covers wear- and-tear items and adjustments during the initial 12 months or 12,000 miles of ownership. In addition, Volkswagen will offer a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles (previously 10 years/100,000 miles, but transferable only from the original retail owner to a family member). The new warranty is a big improvement over the old one. The only down side to the new coverage is that it no longer includes free scheduled maintenance.
Regarding the last 8 digits of the VIN, if the first character of those last 8 digits is a "1", then your car is officially a 2001 model (or 2001.5). If that character is a "2", then you have a 2002 model.
A dealership we have been speaking with said that VW is increasing the price of those 2002 Passats that have the CD player standard (they said the price increase is approx. $300). Is this true?? (Why all the discussion then about having the CD player "standard" if there is a price increase?) Also, have more dealerships now been receiving 2002 Passats with CD player standard?
I live on the north side of Chicago, and the current joke/contest with my friends and I is to see how many new SILVER Civics and Jettas we can count on one block. It's seldom less than six, seriously. It's so stupid. I mean, silver is 'hot' now, but what about at trade-in time? Ever noticed how many 92-96 hunter green with tan interior cars are on used car lots right now? And nobody wants them now, but that was the hot combo back then.
It amazes me that anyone would want to spend $20-30k on a car they can't even find in the parking lot at the supermarket. Is anyone here going to be excommunicated at work or the country club if their car isn't silver? Everyone has a silver Passat, get a blue one, or burgundy, seriously. Or maybe predict what's gonna be hot in five years when it's traded in.
I've only seen a few white Passats (or A4's for that matter). Personally, I wanted a white A4, but couldn't find one. I settled on Melange (goldish metallic). I would have taken silver, too, but the Melange was equipped how I wanted it.
that's great pomchi, but I guess you must live in NH, otherwise what happens when the passat starts leaking or the windshield distortion becomes unbearable or the passenger's side window begins to have a mind of its own? Please, explain.
Or you could post the phone number for the dealer with the name of your salesperson. I would be happy to call and verify. I did this before with an Escape that was sold for 500 under invoice.
I have only one question...Did the boys at Tulley realize their error and make good on a quote that you were given, or is this a mistake that you feel that they made, and did not recognize?
Bought a 2002, GLX, 4-Motion, 6-CD changer for $30,300 in northern NJ last night. 200 less than the carsdirect.com price w/o CD. didn't have to mention that price to get it. About $500 over invoice with the cd thrown in. the invoice was about $250 over the edmunds invoice accounting for port and ad fees. seemed like a fair deal
Once substantial sales numbers of 02 models can be assessed, Edmunds will be able to accurately determione TMV. It would be unfair to generate such values on very limited sales.

If it is, is it worth the money?
Which color do folks here like better?
these two colors...
VW does not surcharge for Metallic or Pearl paint except on the
EuroVan...

Correct?
let you search out the detailed version on your own...
*Holdback* is a pooled asset that offsets an ongoing Debt... Holdback is
never figured or used in accounting against a specific car...
So your presumption is incorrect...

Last 8 digit of my Passat's VIN does not start with 1, in fact it does not contain 1 anywhere....
nevertheless, tell us about whats the deal with last 8 digit of VIN starting with 1...
thanks in advance

Regarding the last 8 digits of the VIN, if the first character of those last 8 digits is a "1", then your car is officially a 2001 model (or 2001.5). If that character is a "2", then you have a 2002 model.

It's the other (darker) colors, like hunter green, that are fickle.
Do you remember when silver with burgundy velour was big (late 70s-early 80s)?
I'd almost bet $$ that that was not a wholly factual post.
Re: Color. That depends on where you live...
I.E. A White/Beige car isnt super hot in NY City, and a Black/Black car is NOT good in FL...
