I picked up a 2005 GLS Passat Wagon + Leather/Wood Trim for 19.9+ttl -- I got an excellent deal b/c the car has been marginally damaged by hail. The majority of the damage is to the hood, but i'll get it fixed soon enough. The list price was dropped to 23500. Plus the dealer was offering either the special financing rate or $3500 off. I took the rebate.
I had one of these negotiated for $24,000 out the door with 2.9% financing. I ended up going with something else (04 GLX, V6 5-Speed, see above), but I thought somebody might be interested in the price. I think the profit margin is getting pretty thin with this when you add the financing. A couple of dealers told me they couldn't match it but the guy who offered it assured me it was a go.
This is how I understood the breakdown. I emailed him he said he had a hail damaged wagon listed @ 28K and would sell for 23500. On my initial visit to the dealership he said there was an additional 2K of that price which dropped the price to 21500. I said I would think about it some more. The second time I visited the dealership (about a week later) -- he said the discount increased 2K to 3.5K - which dropped the price to 20K.
Now I don't know if that is an official VW discount or what -- but for the marginal damage to just the hood -- I could live w/ that price.
Just checking to see if anyone had some advice on a potential purchase. Local dealer (Maryland) has an '04 GLS Wagon silver , auto, black leather, wood trim (Listed as $685 dealer item! ). New with 125 miles. I'd prefer an '06 but have heard they are several (6+ mos. away) Other than an '06, it's what I'm looking for, could care less about the wood. Their sticker shows at $28k.
Any ideas on what this car should be bought for? I'm not under the gun for a new car but am looking in the next 1-3mos. Haven't talked price at all yet. They mentioned up front a $500 owner loyalty incentive. But as I said, no talk yet on the price as I just stopped in for a quick look.
I usually do fairly well in my negotiations but the '04 model year has thrown me off as to how low they should be going, considering it's almost two model years old.
my recent purchase (3 weeks ago) of a '05 Passat GLS sedan auto is $22500. basically I think at the time of purchasing, for the MSRP $26070 model, with all the incentive and holdbacks subtracted from the invoice, we were looking at $21905. as reasonable profit for the dealer, I think the price was OK. actually dealers all rejected my $22200 offer. hope this helps someone in the market.
Hi, I'm thinking on buying a Passat. At a nearby dealer they have one 2002 1.8T, GLS (triptonic), 26k and they're asking around $17k. The dealer gives me 2 more years of warranty. Although the price is negotiable, does it sound like a good price to you?. I've read really good comments about Passats for years but I would like some feedback from the owners. Please let me know your experiences with this particular model. Thanks in advance. Bruno
Just bought a 2005 passat GLS yeaterday at $22,400. I think I could do a little bit better, but all well. Thanks for the previous post on the GLS purchase. I got the black color, not my first choice but I really love the interior color and the cobination.
You think there's a difference? DUH! I'll never buy another VW again. My 2002 Passat GLS Wagon w/1.8T engine SUCKED, and not just gasoline. I spent $18.8K on a car that gets 18/27 mpg and VW says that's "within normal parameters." My 2002 Cadillac Seville with the Northstar V8 gets 18/26 regularly and has one helluva better ride and MUCH MORE room. The plastic parts on the interior that are exposed to heavy finger wear are made of some kind of rubberized plastic that shows every scratch and chip and VW knows it...which is why they didn't balk at my demand they replace them for free. The roof, door, and window molding ALL were coming off after long highway trips...why? Because they're poorly fitted and not glued in place...only held by gravity. Even gravity gives at 75 mph for extended periods of wind. Why did I buy the VW? I was stupid and believed it would get better mileage and not shake, rattle, rock, and roll like it was made during Octoberfest and destined for the fate of the Bismark. My recommendation: don't waste your money on VW.
My 2002 1.8 T regularly gets 25mpg around town, and I've gotten up to 33mpg on the highway. I don't know your situation, what kind of driver you are, what conditions you drove in, but your mileage is not typical. I'm not a conservative driver, and I'm really pleased with my mileage. I have not experienced the trim and molding problems you have either, my interior and exterior looks new, and has held up better than most of the 40 some cars I've owned. In fact I would rank the Passat up near the top of all of the cars I've owned for best all-around driving experience. It has a great feel to it, good handling, acceleration, mileage, beautiful interior and exterior. If it wasn't for the ignition coil and some front suspension problems, both of which were each corrected in a day, the Passat would probably be at the top of my list of favorites. My all time favorite was a 1967 Porsche, but that type of vehicle would not be practical for my current situation. I've had all sorts of American, European and Japanese cars. A close second for favorite would be a 1993 Infiniti I owned, and I would have to admit that I like the new M35 Infinti. Edmunds says my 2002 is worth $16.5K, but I'm not ready to sell, even though the M35 is very tempting.
Just bought the 2005 Passat GLX 4Motion in Northern Virginia. We got the last one that this dealership had. The MSRP was $33,230, the invoice was $30,974 and we paid $28,750. That's $3,000 than comparably equiped Volvo S60 2.5T AWD that we were considering as an alternative.
I just filled up the first time in my 2002 1.8 passat gls and got 27mpg, that was alot of idling with the ac on and about 50% highway driving. Love the car so far, wanted better mpg with optional performance, so far perfect.

I assume everyone's excited about the new B6 but I decided to stick with a classic and purchased a new 2005 B5 wagon yesterday. I just couln't pass up the discounts they are offering. $3500 VW to Dealer discount - $500 VW loyalty discount - $1500 dealer discount means I got a new GLS 1.8 Auto Wagon with a sticker price of $27,070 for $21,570.
In order to get the $500 loyalty discount we had to finance with VW's non promotoional rate but this can be refinanced after 90 days with a non VW loan for a much lower rate.
Planning to purchase a 2003GLX wagon 30k for 17000. I am wondering it is a GLX but has no leather, what other option do I miss or do I need to look for. Any body out there has the certified experience? Thanks Fredlj
Hi; Looking for a sanity check will buy Friday a CPO Wagon GLS 2003 with 30K miles for 18300++. Is that a fair price? Dealer (VW) claims new back brakes ( incl rotor) and new tires. Are brakes lasting that short on a Passat? TIA Frederik
Carsdirect.com is reporting that there is a dealer rebate of $2000 on the GLS sedan. I know that some companies offer incentives/rebates more often than others (Acura is notorious for their few incentives); does Volkswagen offer such incentives often? It seems to me that a $2000 rebate is pretty significant, and if they only come once or so per quarter, it might be wise to hasten my search?
Also, from those of you who own Passats, do you think it would make a practical collegiate/post-graduate car? For $21k, it seems like it has a lot of space, class, safety, etc. to it without being a complete dad car. Any responses would be appreciated.
I only have 600 miles on my new Passat, so I cannot answer that specifically. However, I suspect that short brake life more reflects driving style. I drive some back roads where the speed limit is 45. Unobstructed, I can zip along at 55. But I usually find myself behind an unskilled driver who brakes into every gentle turn and on every gentle downgrade. That driver will wear out brakes in 18,000 miles or less. I can get 40,000 or 50,000 since I can control my vehicle better and I do mostly highway driving.
Decided to Go for it..... the GLS Wagon 2003 it is a certified preowned, so with 3 years extra warranty for 18300 the wood trim is cool too According dealer and it looked true they gave me new tires and a new rear brakes Thanks all hope this car will last.
The discounts are offered on the 2005, which are almost gone now. If you want one, you better hurry up to get the color and configuration you want. We couldn't find a GLX 4Motion in the collor we wanted in a 200 mile radius. Ended up buying it in silver with black, interior, which was close to the bottom of our color preference. That was over a month ago...
Has anyone done an off-lease purchase of their leased Passat from VW Credit? Any information on experience, ability to negotiate (i.e., price, CPO status, financing, necessity to work with VW Credit or local dealer, or other negotiable factors) would be appreciated.
Sorry about that...I am referring to the 2.0T standard model. The price of the car is approx $24k. That is invoice price according to the dealership. I'm trying to negotiate and need to get some more numbers to go back to them with. Their offer: $355.35 + tax, no money down, 3 years, 12,000 miles. I want it lower....
ive heard of people getting there advertised offer with zero down. that would be a 2.0 with premium @ ~290/month(+tax) for 36 months 12k miles/year. its a msrp of just over 27k . They are paying up front fees like aquisition and security deposit i believe.
Well the one that VW is advertising is the 2.0T with Package 1, which apparently comes with XM or Sirius? That is at the VW site. It's $289 plus tax. Not sure about the mileage. It's 36 months though. The driveaway is like $2400+ but the dealer has to discount like $500. The money factor is like .00065, although one local dealer quoted me .00080.
Would be interested to see if anyone has actually leased these yet.
Don't see too much advertising. They don't even list the EPA figures on the VW site.
Thats the one. I would use that as a reference point for negotiating. People are getting it without paying the cap cost reduction referenced in that deal. Seems like you can buy these at very close to invoice.
Does anyone know if VW is offering any sort of owner loyalty programs on the new 2006 Passat? And, can any owner loyalty program(s) be combined with the low lease rates that are being offered on the VW website?
Where (which city) did you get that deal dayna17? What was your out the door cost? What is the sales tax where you bought it?
Also, what options did you get in Package 1? Xenons? Homelink? Power memory seats? Rear Shade? Tiptronic? Do you mind listing the MSRP?
ej1111 where did you hear there was a zero down deal with low monthly payments?
Also, anyone hear about the VW Supplier Purchase Program? I guess VW has agreements with some companies to give discounts to the employees of those companies. I can get to a special VW site with a code and then print out a coupon but there is no indication of what kind of discount I would get.
I hate to be the "i have heard" person, but i have heard people going in and mentioning the advertised offer(the one posted above with money down) and saying ill take one now if i can get that deal without the money down. After talking with my local dealer i have a lot of confidence in that working, particularly if they have something on that lot you will drive away in.
There is no Owner Loyalty thorugh VW Credit on the New Passat. It is available on all of the other models. They (VW) feels that the lease incentive is good enough to get people in the door and down the road in the new '06 Passat.
Hmm, did some research on cars.com. Edmunds doesn't have this info yet I believe.
First, EPA is 22/31, apparently for both 2.0 and 3.6 models. That may be optimistic for the 3.6.
Second, you can't get xenons, HomeLink or Rear Shades at all until you move up to the V6. And even then, you have to buy it as a part of a huge package.
Pretty limited. You can get xenons and HomeLink on a Mazda 3 for heaven's sake!
We got the car in Plainville, CT. I assume you mean $0 down for out the door cost?
We didn't get Package 1, we got the "Standard" edition (base), right below package 1. They are also advertising a "Value Edition" which is only about $1000 less than the Standard, but not much of a difference in options. The MSRP was $23,900.
I bought my 2002 Passat after a 36 mo lease. I was not able to negotiate a lower price but paid about 14K for the car. I was under the mileage allowance and thought I should buy it for now. It was quite simple to purchase. If you have any questions, let me know.

Can't wait to get the cross bars and a phatbox.
$3,500 rebate?? Or is that the $2,000 discount plus another $1,500 discount due to the damage?
Thanks.
Now I don't know if that is an official VW discount or what -- but for the marginal damage to just the hood -- I could live w/ that price.
Just checking to see if anyone had some advice on a potential purchase. Local dealer (Maryland) has an '04 GLS Wagon silver , auto, black leather, wood trim (Listed as $685 dealer item! ).
