Thank you for your fast response. The number isn't what I had hoped for, but that's what happens when you drive as much as I do.
I had hoped to possibly get into a 4 to 6 year old Accord or Camry in the 50k to 60k mile range. Is this doable for say 8 to 10k?
Incidently, I lurk a lot on this board, so I've learned what to include in descriptions. I didn't want to be sent to my room (there's no TV in there). Not that it matters, my cable system refuses to carry the YES network, so no Yankee games.:))
Yup, acording to everything I've seen, EX wagons were all autos. LX wagons could be had with a stick, though. I've heard someone who's sold Hondas for years, though, swear up and down that 5 speed EX wagons do exist, so I have to believe him.
I love the Onion, though it's not quite as fun 'on-line' as when you can actually find the paper.
Anywho, Bill and/or Terry, I got another friend wanting to dump his car for a condo (or something like that):
98 Mazda Millenia L Hunter green/tan leather (I know) automatic power roof, heated seats 48k miles check engine light on (he says he'll fix this) front corner (fender and turn signal) have been 'clipped', so needs a fixin' (says he'll fix this, too). Can you guesstimate unfixed vs. fixed value, please? He still owes $11,500, which is what he wants out of it . Thanx!!
We need to interview a few people by telephone who are currently shopping for cars and are looking at vehicles in several different categories or at least are looking for one type of vehicle and are cross shopping several different brands. If you respond, you must be willing to be quoted by name in a national publication.
Interested, qualified parties, please send your name and telephone number to carguy147@hotmail.com no later than Monday, May 20, 2002. Thanks.

#1 Ooh! Low Miles and Negro/Schwarz/Black in NJ. This is worth every bit of $18,500-19K at the sale if its' mint... $20,995 is quite fair, especially at an Audi dealer. Obviously you ought to be able to work em down a bit tho. Start em at $19,500 as Mr Formula Boat likes to say LOL but if $20,995 is take-it-or-leave-it that is not getting high-grossed as my buddy Ted says.
#2 is still a $14,500 car easily. Even with the little stick you have to push back and forth. Again, try em at $15K.. but that's not outta line either. #3 About the same deal. 1.8s come with Genuine Naugahide. Poor little Naugas getting skinned to upholster Audis Same deal here on Pricing.. they're all pretty agressive. Honest.
Maybe they stole em all on trade or something...
The Catera? Overpriced and not a wonderful car. It IS a Wonderful car that GM ruined on import.
Fixed? $11,500 would be a retail "get" price asking $12,395
That being said, Color aint always a killer... I just sold (Was a locate) today a 1997 Mustang GT Coupe. Handshaker, Hunter Green, Crank Windows, 16"s. But customer was happy wit it. Was a SUPER nice car (Baby Doll in Terry-speak) and hey, I snagged it for $8400 at the sale.
I have a 91 325 convertible. Mechanically it is in great shape.....the only problems are it needs a new top...and the leather needs to be reconditioned. Edmunds gave it a rough price of 5800....I want to trade it in on a dodge ram 1500 quad cab. The dealer said plan on getting poor condition trade on it....if I want more to sell it on my own.....how much would I expect for it if I try to trade it in.....would I get much more money back if I put a new top on it and reconditioned the leather?
Every possible goodie but leather. Very attractive non chrome rims - billet grill - knee deep in rubber - VERY VERY clean - no paintwork and only a few nicks.
I am think about either selling the Devile myself or trade it in. We have about 8500 mi on the car now. It is white exterior and stone like color interior. The only option in the car is chrom wheel and some additional wood piece in the car. What is resonable price if we were to sell it ourselves or trade it in? I lived in the SF bay area. Thanks.
BTW, my last name (the Americanized/bastardized version, anyway) is supposedly pronounced Hyu-lit. I know it's wrong, but who am I to mess with a lifelong tradition?
Thanx for the #s on the Millenia. I figured he was a bit flipped. He claims he's found a 'cheaper' car (97 Accord EX w/leather for $7k; I'll believe it when I see it, or if it has 200k on the clock). Why do people do this? He's gonna save about twenty bucks a month on the note to trade in a car he's flipped on, for an older car. This is a guy I probably see out at the bars about twenty nights a month, so he's got the $ for that, LOL.
it has 98000 miles. Black with light grey interior. I live in Southern California. It is a 5 speed. It has a six disk changer, heated seats electric top. Leather is cracking and has definite wear. Dash is fine, tires are fine ac is very cold top needs to be replaced. surface is usual wear and tear minor scratches...a couple tiny dings. It is in excellent running condition.
They were all asking prices. #1 & #2 have already been dropped in price by 1K so they've probably been around a while. Gotta make plans with the inlaws to babysit so we can go test them out. More than like we'll skip the stick, I taught her years ago when we first got married, but since we havent't owned a stick in about 6 years she's out of practice.
I thew out the Catera only due to the fact it's built in Germany and I thought it could be a good alternative. Just curious, how did GM ruin it? If it's just the styling then that could be something I could live with as long as it's a comfortable ride. If it's with the mechanicals of the car then I'm definitely avoiding it.
I was wondering if anyone could advise me on what to try to negotiate on a trade in for my car. I have a White 1998 Ford Contour. It has: 66,000 miles SE model V6 2.4(?)L Spoiler Power windows, locks, steering New tires, brakes No mechanical work needed(oil change) minor outside flaws(couple of small dents, worth getting pulled?) CD player Any info is appreciated.
OK, dealing question for you. Co-worker #1 is wanting to pick up the '95 Nissan 240SX mentioned last week (for reference: base model but with pretty much every option except alloys; slider, windows, CD, air, etc...not sure about ABS/diff package though) 88k, nice shape except tires... Anyway, the asking price is $5998. The dealer claims this is a drop from his original $6998 asking price. Well, that's all well and good, but it still needs tires. He's going to evaluate her trade (it's worth even less than the Cav was when I traded for the Volvo, which I didn't think was possible) and seems pretty firm on the price. I'm thinking $5500+ the junked '87 Aries. Whaddya think?
Yeah, well you used to own a lot of things that'd make us working schmucks drool...(well, except the Strat...) It'll be at least a year before I'm back in the market (my Brick's running great; Bryan's might have a bad ECU, though (of course, it's a Rex/Regina...ouch) but if you happen to see the mystical 850R five speed, let me know...
...eh, I might go new next time. I find myself going back to km77.com and drooling over the new 9-3 and the Mazda 6 five door...
Yea, I like the newer style too. I already have a 2000. But I'm looking replace my gas guzzler Jeep.
They also hve a black 96 LX auto w/ 59 k, asking 8995.
This is all speculation on my part, tho, because I haven't decided whether it is worth it to get rid of my Jeep or just ride it in to the ground. It's almost paid for, its been relatively problem free it just takes a lot of gas. 30000 miles a year at 17 to 22 mpg doesn't sound as good as 28 to 32 mpg, which is what I get on my current Honda. And, based on the real market value, I'm not able to make an "even up" trade. I will have to come up with more money out of pocket or extend my financing. Making payments on a 100k vehicle is something I am trying to avoid.
Can you help me determine what a dealer should offer as a trade-in amount for my 2000 New Beetle, GLS Turbo, fully loaded, premium daisy wheels, 18,000 miles - original owner, excellent condition.
Every possible goodie but leather. Very attractive non chrome rims - billet grill - knee deep in rubber - VERY VERY clean - no paintwork and only a few nicks.
Chop420, why did you trade the 2000 S70 GLT? I'm looking at 2000 S70's (prefer GLT) to replace a 13 year old Mercedes 190E that is getting too expensive to maintain. Did you have problems with the Volvo? Thanks.
I'm coming off lease on a 1999 Mercedes E320 sedan, midnight blue with ash interior, E2 package (moonroof and Bose sound) plus 6-CD changer, with approx 68k miles. The car runs perfectly and is in very good condition (but not "showroom" condition -- after all, it has 68k miles, and shows normal wear). I'm in Southern California. I understand from California DMV that I can, essentially, sell the car privately myself to a third party, pay off my lease residual, and avoid sales tax. If I put it in the paper, what should I ask, and what should I expect?

That's a $10K car if its' super perfect.
So, fixed with the paintwork.. $9200ish.

Great! Now how many miles on it? What Color Combo? Where do you live? Automatic? Stick? Options?
How bad is the leather? Surface wear? Or all dried out and split? How's the dash? Tires? AC Cold?
Tsk tsk tsk... I think we all know what this means!

Hmm... Really high $32s to maybe $33,200 or so on a trade.
Retail? $36,900/bo and grab upper $35s. (Bear in mind if your state gives you a sales tax credit on trade, that can be close to $2k++ here)
Bill
$7K? Seems cheap. He's not making a smart move from where I sit. But we knew that anyways, right?
Probably $4,500ish is what I think. If it didnt have the top/leather problems... I'd say more.. buut...
A top for that sucker is at least $800.
Why not try getting $7K for it on eBay? I bet ya could!
Bill
Lets see...
$9,500ish ought to buy that 97.. Maybe $10K. If it has a roof it is aftermarket. Personally I would pass.
#2? $12k-12,500 oughta get that one done. hey're in the $10-10,500 range at the auctions..
Hope this helps!
Bill
PS.. I like the 98 better... better buy IMO.
No.. those are fair prices for retail.. you cant get hurt there.
The Catera? I like em, but the suspension on em is wussy.. GM "retuned" it for the US (Read: Destroyed it).
Also, they arent the most reliable beasts. But that 3.0V6 WILL Go for over 250,000 miles.
Bill
Or pop it in the paper for $5,900 and it should do $5,500 easy.
