Hi, i'm in a bit of a jam, i have a 99 dakota sport with 46000 miles and i still owe $11000. And i know i'm not going to get that on a trade in but we need a family vehicle and we can't just whip out money for a down payment either. So should i look for dealers who have large cash back rebates? Would that work? So i won't go that much in the hole, because we can't afford a large payment on a new car. I bought it not knowing what i was getting myself into, now i know! Kelley's blue book says dealers will only give me around $6,500. And Edmunds says i should get at least $8,796. ANY SUGGESTIONS??? Thanks alot, in advance! Shawna sdaniel34c@yahoo.com
If you want an accurate value, you'll need to tell the pros a little more about your truck... maybe Dakota "Sport" is unique, I dunno... Which engine? transmission? What color? Where do you live? 2WD or 4WD? Also, is it clean? Are there any dings or dents? Has the truck ever been repainted? Had bodywork? Has it been smoked in? What shape is the interior in? Typically, you'll be $1k+ ahead in the game if you sell it yourself, but that takes a little work. Good luck, -Mathias
Update on the XK8. Seems the dealer wants to use Kelley and offer me 24 at good condition. Got home and I get 25.5 from Kelley in good condition? He tried to tell me a car as old as mine can't be in excellent condition. But when I asked what I needed to do to get it into excellent, he didn't mention much. He was suppose to talk with the sales manager Saturday (he was out Friday), but I haven't heard back from them yet.
I can't see it, feel it or touch it, so it's hard for me to put a "hard" number on it. But it is 7 years old.
But what they are saying is true .. no dealer can put "excellent" money into ANY vehicle, unless it's a 02 SC430 with 3k, if you get my drift here.
I understand your frustration, but some of it may come from the Kelly book .. there is a old saying in this business - "live by the book, and you will die by the book" ..
I feel you guys are close enough to "play" another day. So If you can get somewhere "around" that $25ish figure .. that meaning around that $24,4/$25ish number then it's time to cut it from the herd. Kinda remember, the dealer is "thinkin' .. it's almost October, the weather will be changing in 2/3/4 wks and the Convert business is over - and I don't want to get hung in this puppy til' April or so - and if I transport it to a FL auction, I'm going to take a hit cuz' of the color.
I don't mean to play the devils advocate here, but I do understand their thinking .. And I'm not saying to fold your tent up and go home, but lets see what the next move is from the dealer, cuz' you guys are Sooooo close. You bend a little, they bend a little, and Bang it's a deal.
It has 156000 miles. Being used as an commuter, I put about 25k miles a year...
I am considering buying 02 or 03 Accord 4Cyl Sedan with manual tranny, which I believe will be more fun than Auto...^^;
Can anyone advise me how much I can get for my 94L legend in buying 02or03 Accord? I am looking for the "Real World Trade-ins", yes!, if I can get the TMV trade-in value, that will be great!, But I think I need to be prepared emotionally...^^;
Car runs smooth and great!. Water pump, T-belt, all the hoses and belts are replaced about 5000 miles ago, Brake Master Cylinder and Radiator were replaced about 20k miles ago... Fuild changed regularly. Most of all, Head Gasker was replaced about 30k miles ago. No problem at all! Maintenance is alway done with Genuine Honda Parts...
A few problems :
1. the paint near Rear wheel well is getting rusted.. a small spot as most of honda's do..... hmmmmm...
Hello! What would be a real-world trade-in value (in Texas) and/or private party sale price for my 1994 Nissan Maxima GXE 4 dr sedan? Looking to trade/sell very soon!
driver's airbag Automatic restraint in front seatbelts Great A/C Cruise control Alloy wheels Power windows/locks/steering Keypad entry, digital clock, center console, AM&FM Radio/cassette player w/ presets- however, the light no longer works. One back speaker is a little crackly-sounding.
No dents or scratches Slight stain on drivers' floor side. 4 tinted side windows- window tint mild to moderately wrinkly/bubbly Gray Cloth Seats/interior in great condition. Non-smoker. No accidents.
Tires: 1 pair has only been on the car for <4K miles, the other pair closer to 40K.
Had entire car repainted 11 months ago in same color (just for that newer, shinier look) Basic theft-deterrent system Rear window defroster, heated power mirrors I have all maintenance records since 1995 when I bought the "program" car from a local dealer.
Wanting to find out "Real World" trade-in value for a white, '98 Olds Aurora with standard equipment (V8, leather, full power, etc.). Mileage is 83K, and vehicle in in clean condition (non-smoking, glossy paint, newer tires, one minor door ding, well maintained). Looking to trade for a '02 or '03 Honda Odyssey, and the dealer offered me $4,000. Was this a joke, or what?
It was suggested I bring this over to this board. I am looking at a Beige 1994 Toyota Camry LE, 72k miles, auto but no extras. It's clean and in decent but not perfect shape. The seats have a few stains on them, the inside door buttons are a bit worn. The back door was replaced after an accident and there is a small dent in the middle of the trunk.
I offered 4500 but the people who own it won't come below 5000. They have no service/maintanence records whatsoever (of course they swear they maintained the car well) and haven't replaced the timing belt because "Timing belts don't ever break. That's just marketing".
...a friend of mine, not necessarily wanting to trade or sell just yet, has:
01 Olds Aurora 3.5 kinda green/blue, but more blue color (Marine?) natural leather interior in great condition power roof dual power heated seats dual climate control no chrome wheels CD/cassette I don't think OnStar drum roll....almost 127500 miles (not a typo, I'm not lying, I was in the car yesterday and gawked at the odo, he's a national salesman, naturally)
I guess I'm asking: is it better to keep this car to its death? When is it best to trade in a super-miley car?
00 Suzuki Vitara (not 'Grand') black, gray cloth 4x4, 5-speed (ouch) 4 doors ~20k miles power windows/locks/stereo I can't remember if CD or cassette in good condition overall, in Chicago he hates it, wants out (fortunately, he paid ~$12k for it new, not the ~$17k sticker)
Just traded in my '98 Explorer XLT for an '02 leftover Windstar Saturday. When I asked back in July you guys pegged the Explorer at 8,5-9 then and around 8-8,5 in the fall (high mileage and it was hit in the rear door). Well, procrastination pays off. We finally got the deductable check from the insurance and scheduled repairs.
We went to the dealer where we got our truck from to test the Windstars and asked about trade on the truck. We told our saleman (same one who sold us the truck)the truck would be fixed, but to give us prices on both a current and fixed basis. He came back with 8k and 9,5 fixed.
Since we had financed the Explorer thruugh Ford Credit and we buying a new Windstar, the dealership told us they'd take the truck our insurance check (less deductable) as well.
So, on paper we ended up getting 9,3 as a trade (8200, got them to up it 200, + 1100 check), but in reality, 10,3 once we add in our 1000 deductable.
We paid $199 over invoice for the Windstar, which puts it a $53 over TMV, with the trade and 0% financing, we feel we got a good deal. Best part, it was a quick, easy and no pressure sale.
Wow, sounds to me like you scored a hat trick there; got out of the old Exploder, didnt have to pay to fix it, and got a nice deal on the Windy. Well done!

Very (very) good condition, accident free, will need rubber shortly. Bad time to be selling a luxury sedan, as I can't seem to give it away, so I might have to face the harsh reality of trading in.
..... Based on your description, it sounds clean and it is the right color, with all the right toys .. but, throw some sneakers on that bad boy.
I don't have to tell ya, the miles will hold you back, waaay back.
On a trade, a Benz dealer will be in and around the $10/$11ish range ... I have a feeling - since you are trying to sell it, and you aren't getting any action on it that you may be asking too much.
If you are going by KBB or the others, it probably shows around $19ish on the retail side, that dog just won't hunt ..
If you want to "turn and burn" that puppy dog, then you need to be advertised at $15,9 and let some nice Air Force recruiter take it off your hands for $14,0/$15,5 ...
Actually it's not a trade...I'm considering buying it and would appreciate a fair appraisal of the retail value of this car.
It has 23,200 miles, beige/gold color, automatic, sunroof, leather, power seats, alloy wheels, Bose radio with single CD+cassette, and FWIW it's certified preowned. I didn't see any major dings. Car is in South Florida. Dealer is asking $17900.
..... Hmmm, seems a little on the high side to me.
But, the miles are extremely low, that's a good thing, plus it has all the options and it's the right color for Florida.. this would be a hard vehicle to shop, I would think $16,5/$16,9 or so should make the deal ..
I realize new rubber can make/break a private sale, but will it make a difference should I take the hit and trade-in (I'm thisclose to throwing in the towel)?
I've been in "turn and burn" mode since August (been advertising it for $15K, originally asking $17K mid-summer) thus the glum outlook.
Think about this, go to your local pep boys and pick up 4 cheap tires for under $200. Drive it to the dealer and the dealer will see brand new tires and won't deduct you for it. If the dealer sees worn old tiers on your car, he can deduct anywhere from $200 to $500+ for the tires. When you are in a situaion where you are trying to get every dollar, why give the other guy a chance to deduct it from you? If you get the new tires, you gain a little bit more control on the trade in price.
Ok, background. I have a long commute (60 mi each way, 50+ of which is highway) on a job I just got a few months ago. New job and damaged credit I've been rebuilding for 3 years now makes financing anything tough.
Current car: Red 93 Corsica with 47k miles on it, owned for just over a year, swapped tires and a couple of minor electrical repairs (turn signal switch, power window switch), and the A/C just sprung a leak. Cosmetically would class as clean/good.
Possible new(er) car (flyer at wife's work): 1997 Mazda Protege ES 4 DR Excellent condition Metallic Brown with Tan cloth interior Automatic tranny Power Win/Locks/Steer/Braks Cruise AM/FM/Cassette Lo Jack New Front Brakes New Rear Tires From picture, no moonroof
Located in Central/North Jersey, looking at $6,400 obo, which is close to kbb and Edmunds numbers.
Considering I'll be running in the neighborhood of 30k miles a year in highway commutes, no children yet (soon though), is this a good deal on this other car? Will this car keep me on the road relatively hassle free, assuming it's been maintained?
I'm expecting I'll only get about $2k in trade for my car, or maybe get $2.5k if I can find a private buyer, am I being rational?
I strongly dislike my current car and would like a move on efficiency, reliability and miles eating ability, but tight budget makes that questionable.
Thoughts? (will likely cross-post to Help Me Choose)
The protege is a very nice, dependable and reliable car. I would rank it right up there with both the corolla and civic. I think Terry would give you an idea on how much that Protege should be price at.
..... Sounds like you have been doing this smart, you have been traveling down the right price program .. hmmm, and still no bites ..?
Based on your description it sounds nice and clean, it's the right color and all the stuff .. no lumps, no bumps, no Mcdonald invasions -- just a bunch of miles.
Are you advertising this "big time" in the paper or in something else ..?
Also Dtwleungnyc is right on this tire thing .. Pep Boys, Sears, etc. Folks hate to spend even $5,000 when they know they have to grab new rubber .. they always think $6/$800 just for starters.
...... The Protege's are another best kept secret .. will run 150K++. (properly maintained)
You are lookin' at an ES, so you have the 1.8 .. great gas mileage and just a tuff little dude, in the land of the sub compacts (don't tell a Yota salesman, they hate the competition) ..l.o.l..
The miles are low for the year .. so if all is A1, then $6,4 is fair, but $5,5/$5,9 sounds better.
and it runs pretty strong, sits at 75-80 for nearly an hour solid each morning.
Electricals on this thing seem a little shoddy, with having replaced some switches already, and both oil pressure and temp sending units acting flaky, biggest reason I want out of it. Chevy known for this kind of problem?
This Protege, if I can look at it, like it and make an offer that makes it a great deal for me, I might. Otherwise I'll just limp through til spring and flip the Corsica when it comes time for AC.
..... Without putting an eyeball on this puppy .. if there is no rust, paint is 80%, tires are 70%, no major meteorite damage and all the power stuff works, on a trade maybe $1,5/$2,0 .. I don't know where you hail from , so I would say, cuz' it's got some age has a lot to do with it.
Then if it's a nice one, you could get $2,9+ on the retail end - the miles and it being a V6 is the saviour here.
..... Believe it not, the Legends are becoming a legend .. they run forever, still look great and folks still love em' ..
If it's clean, deep in rubber, no invasions, no drive by's and it looks like a 99 in body and soul (l.o.l.) .. on a trade, in and around $4ish .. if it needs a this and a that and you haven't seen your back seat since 98, then start deducting.
..... You can try $15 and see what happens .. But, if it's a nice one, no miles, it's certified and all toyed out, I gotta think he has at least $14 in it
..... Hi Sneezy .. I didn't forget you, I just been a little Bz .. so let's see what we got here.
Uuuuuh, a re-paint huh .? that puts a whole different avenue to travel on .. the miles are fine for the year and Import buyers aren't afraid of 100k on a good vehicle that's been well maintained.
Is the job done by a pro ..? does it look like a new vehicle, runs, drips .? anytime the paint goes on, the value goes out.
I would have to see this one ... I'm gonna guess somewhere around $1,5 and maybe some change on a trade. Down Retail RD. .. $3,900 in the paper and see what happens.
...... The miles are tall, tall, tall .. but based on what you are telling us, it's in on good condition -- no BOSE, no slider, no chromes, no bun warmers .. right. ? 98 right .?
Even though there is no real toys here and the miles are stiff .. $4,0 ..? Aaaaah, I don't think so .. unless it's been used as target practice by the Taliban, and your mother-in-law uses the back seat to cook her favorite dishes in. If it's on the rough side, it's gotta be worth at least $6,0 ...
Am I missing something here ..?
Ok, on the truck .. you have a ECab with a 6, a handshaker and some miles.
The 6 and the handshaker will kill ya here .. probably around the $7's on a trade ..
..... You know might be able to answer this better, would be Mathias .. (Steine13).. he can give you all the particle idea's, or particular, whichever you prefer .. hehe.
The vehicle is probably worth around $7/$8ish .. if it's running like a top, needs -0- and still looks like it has 25k, I would just keep it .. what can you buy today for that kind of money.
Terry, thanks for the ballpark estimate on the Aurora and C1500 truck. Yep, it's just a baseline Aurora. Miles are high, but I take good care of it inside and out. Paint is still like new, engine compartment is clean, interior is in great condition, and it gets 29 mpg on the highway (not bad for a V8). Just not big enough for family trips now that we have an two kids.
Apparently there are a lot of people who routinely buy new vehicles before they pay off their old ones. A reporter is doing a story on how being "upside down" is quite common these days, and is looking to connect with consumers willing to talk about it over the phone on the record (including names, locations, dollar amounts, etc.). He's looking for consumers who are comfortable with being upside down and those who aren't. Then if it's a nice one, you could get $2,9+ on the retail end - the miles and it being a V6 is the saviour here.

If it's clean, deep in rubber, no invasions, no drive by's and it looks like a 99 in body and soul (l.o.l.) .. on a trade, in and around $4ish .. if it needs a this and a that and you haven't seen your back seat since 98, then start deducting.
Terry.
You don't ask, you don't get ...
good luck and let us know ...
Terry.
Terry :-)
Even though there is no real toys here and the miles are stiff .. $4,0 ..? Aaaaah, I don't think so .. unless it's been used as target practice by the Taliban, and your mother-in-law uses the back seat to cook her favorite dishes in. If it's on the rough side, it's gotta be worth at least $6,0 ...
Am I missing something here ..?
Ok, on the truck .. you have a ECab with a 6, a handshaker and some miles.
The 6 and the handshaker will kill ya here .. probably around the $7's on a trade ..
Terry.
Terry.
The vehicle is probably worth around $7/$8ish .. if it's running like a top, needs -0- and still looks like it has 25k, I would just keep it .. what can you buy today for that kind of money.
For Xmas you need to get him some bus passes ....

A reporter is doing a story on how being "upside down" is quite common these days, and is looking to connect with consumers willing to talk about it over the phone on the record (including names, locations, dollar amounts, etc.).
He's looking for consumers who are comfortable with being upside down and those who aren't.
