A good price for both would be $12 and perhaps a little change, but they are all over the place .. actually a lot of vehicle for the $$ ..
Good luck ...!

But anyway, the LE probably has at Least $13 in it, so at $14,9 there not trying to kill anyone, so throw $14,5 at em' and see what they say .. the XR, again a new vehicle on the market, it's a Corolla wagon trying to chase the Ford Focus .. the miles are low here, I gotta think with the slider, ABS, 3/1 pack cd, side airbags, 17" wheels, it would run "around" $20 grand new MSRP ~ "probably" be able to buy it new for $19 or less .. loaded up like this, there doing around the $14/$15's at the block, so $17 isn't really bad .. I gotta feeling that they were offered $14/$15 at a few dealers, so they went down Retail RD, that's fine .. offer them $16 and see what happens, but if you really like it, I wouldn't lose it for a few bucks ..
Like I always say .. buy and drive what YOU like.!

rworrell - that's disrespectful - you're talking about a vehicle, albiet in fair shape, that's 11 model years old, alomst 12, over 100K and rusty - there's no way on Earth it's a retail piece, anywhere - throw the books out the window when you'er dealing with a vehicle that no one can finance, over 100K (on a domestic vehicle) and rust spots.
In my neck of the woods, it's a $1,000 trade in or $1,995 in the paper. Good luck.
Thanks in advance.
Biscayne
But I certainly didn't intend to offend anyone.
It seem to me that people seem to have split ideas. One guy said, $500 which does seem low, and another guy said probably around $1500 to $2000.
Now, I did mention the problem with Muffler and Bumper.
Edmund's used car valuation puts THIS car's trade in at $2420 at ROUGH condition. with over $1700 condition adjustment. I know I can get muffler fixed up for $250 - $300 or so. Now, would it make my car instantly over $3000 trade in or is Edmunds just too optimistic at evaluating trade ins? Other than the bumper and muffler. This car, mechanically, is in fine shape with 10K miles left on Honda Extended emissions warranty so for another 10K all major Emissions parts are covered - O2 sensors, Cat, etc..
Thanks everyone for your input.
There's too many things wrong to warrant all the time and money it would take ($2000-2500) in order to sell a car at retail ($3000).
Bear in mind - you REALLY have to take these books and ohter values as what they are - guides. They aren't the Gospel, and they surely provide you no guarantees.
Let me start out by saying, you are a LEGEND!
I know you've received many accolades from the folks visiting this forum, and I would like to add my voice to the gratefulness for your work. I have followed, enjoyed, and benefited from this discussion for the past few months. And I now find myself in a position that requires your seal of approval.
I am this close (putting my thumb and forefinger real close together) to purchasing a 1995 Infinit Q45T w/ 125,000 miles from a used car dealer for $6500. It's dark purple, has leather, touring package, CD changer in trunk, and appears to be in pretty good condition (notwithstanding a few door dings and occasional rock chips, stands tall and shod w/ new rubber). The car is in Dallas. Is this a good deal? If not, whaddya reckon it should sell for? Thanks a million.
God Bless,
What would be the trade in and private sale price for the following.
1999 Chevy Tahoe LT 4x4
Color - gray/silver
52,xxx miles
Leather (in good shape)
Power driver side seat (bench seat)
PW/PL
New tires
No overhead console or rear heat.
Good/great condition
I'm in the Midwest, Omaha, NE
Looking to trade in or sell privately for a new minivan.
Thanks.
I was looking at a new Avalanche a few weeks ago and was stunned by the lowball trade-in figure the guy gave me on my Yukon. Just want to see if you guys come up with a similar figure....
2000 GMC Yukon (I ordered it, took delivery in April 2000)
SLE Package
A95 - Cloth bucket seats
Running boards
2WD (I live in an area where it's mostly 4WD)
AM/FM/Cass/CD player
Rear A/C AND REAR HEAT (you could only get that on the Yukon, not Tahoe)
Brand new Michelin Cross Terrain tires
3rd row seat
5.3 V8 engine
3.42 locking rear end w/ traction control
54K miles
This has been driven very VERY gently. I drive like an old man
What is trade-in value?
What is the sell-it-myself value?
Thanks!!
It's 2-tone - Bright red top, pewter bottom, and SHE IS A LOOKER!! Even after 3 years and 54K miles on the clock, it looks brand-spanking new and turns heads constantly.
By the by....I had to order the vehicle for 2 reasons:
1. I live in WV (DC Metro tri-state area) - Not too many 2WD's around here. Some, but not many.
2. You don't see too many bright red Tahoes and Yukons. In fact, I understand that you can only get the dark red ones now...bright red is getting hard to come by. Yet several dealers told me when I was ordering my new one that the bright red ones "flew" off the lot the minute they got them in.....Hmmmmmm....makes one wonder.
Terry.
What's the deal with the cheap prices on used Land Rover Discovery (and Disco II's)?? They certainly aren't cheap new - $35-$40K....but I see used 1999's and 2000's advertised in the mid to high teens...low 20's at best. That's a heck of a lot of value to lose in a couple years.
We've been thinkin' about trading (or selling) my wife's Intrepid and buying a used Disco or Disco II. Will we be forever sorry if we buy a used Land Rover?
Up in your area, you "might see" $1,0/$1,5 on a trade, if it's deep in rubber, no french fry invasions - ooop's, no freedom fry's hanging from the mirrors, no click click in the 4x4 .. but, the way it's described, maybe more towards the ghee whiz figure ..
This is a great vehicle for Retail Rd .. $3,900 in the paper and $2,5/$3,5 sends that puppy down Bagdad Rd ..
I hope this helps ...
Terry.
Which ones are you looking at .? model, miles, years, options, color, etc.
Terry.
Thanks for the compliment (I think) .. my g/f thinks I'm a legend in my own mind .. I never did understand what she meant by that
But anyway, if this dude has a good service history, a good Carfax, no or very little paintwork and let's not forget those rounds things, if they are deep, then $6,5 isn't a bad price .. try $5,9 and I will bet he takes it.
Happy St Patty's Day ..
Terry.
Just don't trip over any blarney stones..
Terry
Steine13 (Mathias) .. can tell ya, these are great drivers for those looking for some good transportation ~~ a good detail, a great 4/5 liner Ad in the paper and $2,900 for starters and let the first $2,0/$2,5 cash money, makes it dissapear ..
Terry.
This would probably do the mid to high $14's if it is clean and needs -0- on a trade .. no rear breeze, more into the $13's .. yeow.
Down Retail Rd, $16,900 in the paper (after a nice cleaning) .. and drop kick that puppy off at $15,5/$16,5 ..
May the force be with you ..!
Terry.
Its nothing I would ever want, I'm looking more towards an 04 Jetta wagon GLS TDI. Actually, if I had *my* way I'd get an SUV or minivan, but nooooo, hubby is dead set on the Jetta. That is unless someone comes out with a fuel efficient SUV. Hmmm, fuel efficient and SUV, yeah, like that will ever happen.
I'll post back and let you know how I do.
Thanks again!
Probably a 95(ish)
Honda Accord I4 EX Auto 4dr.
Try to stay around 90k.
What do you think they will run in the Portland, OR area? Dealer and Private. Thanks.
The Disco II's (1999 and later) get better ratings, and they are priced higher - I've seen them from upper teen's (say $17K) to mid $20's.
I had really planned to buy a used 2dr Tahoe Sport (cause I'm putting too many miles on my 2000 Yukon) just to drive back & forth to work, run around town in, etc....but heck with the prices of used Land Rovers, I can get one cheaper than a used Tahoe it seems!
Are there any years that you advise staying away from?
Geez, I paid 17,500 for this just 7 months ago. Good thing I put a good chunk of change down and got a decent trade in allowance on the transaction.
Bringing the maintenance up to date, fixing the body damage, repairing the exhaust system, cleaning up the underbody rust, is going to cost a dealer $2000 give or take. Add the overhead and profit required to keep the car on the lot, and they are looking at wholesale of $500 to $1000 on trade.
It really sounds like you have by far used full value out of the price you paid for the car. Were I in your shoes. Do the major repairs and maintenance and bring those up to date so you can keep driving the car while you look (take your time for your deal). If you chose a less fuel efficient vehicle, SUV/truck, KEEP this car. You may find that you will either wish you had kept the car if fuel prices keep going up, OR as fuel prices go up and the car is in fixed up shape it will be easier to sell yourself as the demand for more fuel efficient cars increases.
Already locally dealers cannot keep $3500 good running fuel efficient cars on the lot due to fuel prices. People who own SUV's are now starting to look for economy in a second car.
1999 Jetta GLS 2.0 4 cyl
Sunroof
50K miles
Black interior, black cloth interior
Automatic
I've done all the service, but haven't kept all the records. The car runs great and there was a problem with the windows that was fixed at the dealer.
Took a 1997 BMW to Accura dealer. Advice here was @$12K-$14K trade - sites go $14-$16K and yep, that's all Trade.
Finance guy does appraisal, but says the Sales manager (not in) has the final word. I'm ready to be high-balled.
They want my keys to "test drive", I say "great, I'll go along". (after all ... I didn't get to drive THEIR car alone). Manager says: "No need to drive, I just want to start it" I give him the key.
I sit inside and watch him yak on the cell as he looks so carefully. I say to the sales guy: "I would have gone with him to the BMW dealer if he wanted", and get a blank stare.
Mgr says about $9K. I say "ouch" and that I'd rather keep the car, but we part on friendly terms
Leaving, I find an appraisal pad with my name, car info, and BMW dealer's phone on the car. Can't resist bringing it back: "You really shouldn't leave this on customer's cars, but I told him I'd be glad to drive with you to the BMW dealer if you asked." He just says: "That's where my pen went". I leave with chuckle.
BTW: I'm betting the BMW store knew EXACTLY whose car they called about. I've been there. They offered $10K.
I'm leaving and the salesman comes out with the KBB price to justify the offer. I say how odd that the '96 BMW they just sold had an Edmunds price listing on it, and it seems they use high price sites to justify sales, but the lowest places for trades. He just gives me a "blank stare" like he doesn't understand, and says how he'll "work hard to get more from the sales manager for me." What a friend he is!
Note this isn't Trade/Retail compare here, but trade on both. They sold the same but older, worse shape car in under a week for $4K MORE than they offered me in trade. And that car was advertised as "below book price" .... yet they argue they're being fair to me! Wonder what they paid that poor sole!
I just can't wait until he calls to tell me how he worked over the sales manager and can get me $1K more in trade. Oh yea, they want about $2K too much for the Accura anyway (according to Edmunds)
You guys in the Biz deserve to make a living, but do some of these guys think we're all stupid?
2000 Yukon, 2WD, Bright red top, silver bottom. 54K. 5.3 V8, running boards, SLE package, rear air and rear heat, front bucket seats, CD player, 3rd row seat, new Michelin tires. Truck looks and drives like it's brand new. Not a scratch or mark on it, 100% MINT.
Thanks!!
Holding on a trade isn't a crime, but lying about it when the customer is HOLDING THE FREAKIN' TRADE SHEET is a problem!
In the past few years, it hasn't been unusual for me to sell the trade to dealer A, and buy from dealer B, simply because B has no interest in buying the trade at a realistic price. While this takes a bit longer, the differences have come to thousands of $.
Of course, I am also brutally realistic about the market, and understand well how the business works. Thus, I am almost never disappointed by the prices I've received on trades - in fact, I've even occasionally been pleasantly surprised by a quote [usually on Honda products] compared with my expectations.
The current new-car incentive frenzy has, predictably, pulled the rug out from used car values...which seems to result in a lot of disappointed people. I agree completely with the observation that folks always seem to think their houses and cars are worth more than they really are - but then they think their kids are all models of decorum, as well....
1997 Nissan Quest XE - Red

Power train - good (got it checked)

Thanks a lot.
What - no "Build Your Royce" button on their website?? LOL!!
It took me a few searches to even find a website for Rolls Royce. Not even a link from BMW.

"Well into the $300,000's". Given it's a comparable vehicle to the Maybach, which runs mid to high 300's, you can be fairly confident that the car you saw was in excess of 300 grand.
Shoot and here we were pulling up near it in our beat up 94 Escort that we paid $1500 for.....hehehe.
I could NEVER imagine paying that much money for a car, most we ever paid was $30k and we cringed about that.
If I had $300k I would have a beautiful house, in fact, I can think of the one I would buy too.
Dang, talk about outta place in Fairbanks, Alaska.....that car definatly was!!
Remember my friend with the Sat SL1 about to wrap up its lease? Well, she stumbled across a diamond in the rough courtesyt of her parents - seller is a friend.
A 1990 Dodge Dynasty - granny car, you can almost eat off the carpet. Just 31 clicks. Owner in her 80s, giving up driving. Her children were asking $1500. My friend took a look at it with her dad, it fired up clean, offered $1000 cash and took it home. She'll put a few hun into tune up, etc., and pay herself the equivalent amount of her SL1's lease payments. The Dyna should last a few more years, and she'll have plenty of bucks in the bank to go new again (she hates used cars).

This is probably not a bad little driver for a Ghee Whiz .. it's a LE I'm assuming, and it probably has the 3.0 V6 Mitsu motor, still see lot's of these at the auctions with 125/150k still ticking away .. this was a good buy.

Aaaah gotcha, you sneaky little devil. I see were you popped that "sport" part in there .l.o.l..
Well we have a soft top, no miles, it's no-sale green, no miles, it's a handshaker, no miles .. if it's a clean one, no freedom fries scrunched up in the seats, no kisses, no re-paint, drives strong and it looks 02, then down Retail Rd -$10,900 in the paper and $9,5/$10,5 sells it to the next guy with a 50 caliber machine gun ..
