She is thinking of getting this one, what say you on the price. It will be a private party sale (my friend is buying).

1999 Toyota Solara SE Coupe 2D
    Engine: 4-Cyl. 2.2 Liter
    Transmission: Automatic
    Mileage: 38,700
    Color: Gray (Metallic)
    Title: Salvage

    4 Wheel ABS
    Single Compact Disc
    Power Seat
    Power Moon Roof
    Rear Spoiler
    Cruise Control
    Air Conditioning
    Alarm System
    Remote Keyless Entry
    AM/FM Radio
    Cassette
    Power Locks
    Power Windows
    Power Steering
    Power Brakes
    Power Outlets
    Power Mirrors
    Folding Rear Seat
    Tilt Wheel
    Mudguards

They are asking $6400 and only has 38,700 miles. Looks good from the outside and inside and pretty good rubber. Located in Houston Texas. I asked about the salvage title and they said that the previous owner was in a front end accident. I could not tell it was in a accident, but then again I am no expert.

Should I run away or look further into this salvage title Solara.

    Thanks again.

    Terry,
hope you've been working on that golf game, staying away from the barns...lo.l
wanted to inquire on some rough values of a few cars to get an idea of what these should be had for in East Tennessee... assume clean, no accidents/paint, body/interior normal shape for mileage.....

'02 Infiniti I35's.... roughly 15-20-25k mileage range, avg options (slider), do heated seats/sports package make any real difference? Is Color (black/silver/maroon) causing a huge swing >$500/750?

'02 TL Type S... roughly 15-20-25k miles, what real $'s does the Nav add? I'm guessing $20/21,5...

'99/00 GS400... my personal preference, just hard to find around here. mileage in the 30's,low low 40's, maybe.

Any others i should toss in with these ones?

    As always, you da'man!

RUN, unless you where standing there when they put
the car back together and your friend will drive the car until the wheels fall off. Salvage title cars are difficult to get rid of and insure.

Remember, you are also responsible for those seven remaining lease payments. You can add them up, add for the excessive miles and that's what it'll take to get out of that lease.

The residual means nothing unless you are planning to buy it.

Someone from another board suggested I come here and get your opinion on a van I'm considering trading. I've received numbers from 2 different dealers but both are significantly lower than Edmund's TMV, Kelley, and NADA. What's your opinion?

    2000 GMC Safari SLE AWD
    Excellent condition w/ 39,000 miles
    Front and rear Air
    Front and rear Heat
    AM/FM/Cassette/CD
    Rear Window Defroster and Wiper
    8 Passenger
    Power Windows & Door Locks
    Tilt Wheel & Cruise
    Roof Rack
    Privacy Glass
    Rear Dutch Doors
    Keyless Entry w/ Alarm

Condition is excellent without so much as a shopping cart ding. Paint has been Teflon sealed and renewed annually - still shines like new. Only "problems" are the tires being original (still have about 10K life left) and a small patch of dried road salt that needs shampooed out of the pedal area.

    Edmunds TMV = $9500
    Kelley = $9800
NADA = $10,800 (even I choke on this one)

    Dealer 1 offer = $8500
    Dealer 2 offer = $7500

I've always felt Edmunds is closest to the real world because I was told they get their numbers from actual deals being made around the country.

Thanks for any light you can shed on my dilemma.

Lease is up. Doing something next week. Gotta decide whether to trade or sell the
    2001 ES300
    white/over ivory
1 year of new car warranty left
just rolled over to 18k miles
    Prem. PKg includes
       leather interior
       moonroof
       6 disk changer
       universal garage door opener
       heated mirrors
    wood/leather steering wheel
    trunk mat
    wheel locks
    upgraded 16" all-season tires

One accident...they replaced the right front fender and the bumper + paint by the Lexus dealer.....no intrusion into the engine and didn't break the head lights or turn signals.....$3k to fix...... looks good to me. (do you remember me.....I asked about this car before?)

3k oil changes by the dealer
    15k maintainance by the dealer
no paint chips, door dings, scratches
interior looks and smells like new (no smoking)

Dealer is offering $20,500 which happens to be by lease payoff. He offered to arrange the transaction if I wanna do a private sale (as I'd have to buy the lease out and pay the $1300 sales tax) + cut me a check for the difference.

The loan is actually a baloon payment type of loan (simular to what they do in New York now). I have paid the amount due (still owe about $300.00 towards the car before the baloon payment). I have beem a couple of payments ahead, and saved some $ on intrest charges. I am guessing that it is worth about 10-11k so I think it would be cheaper to turn it in vs trying to trade it in. Just wanted to get an opinion of value to make sure.

....... Whoa it's an 02 and we have 70k, *ouch* no help here, color is kinda yuk for the area and black seats in the land of Phil Mickelson are like black seats in Florida, there not your friend ..

You "might" be able to negotiate the pay-off at lease end, maybe get them down to the $12/$13 range in 7 months, not now .. trade side it's worth the $11's, maybe $12ish if the winds of luck are blowing your way and you haven't missed church in the last 5 years ...

$1,200 isn't much money for the miles, your options in 6/7 months are buy it at a lower negotiated price .. Or .. just pay for the extra stuff and go on, check back in June/July ...

                      Thanks for stopping by ..

                           Terry :-)

......... Salvage vehicles are worth about 50% less than wholesale pricing, depending on the damage, work, parts, color, miles, stuff like that ..

Even with the low miles these are awfully hard to insure, finance and then try to sell later and the emphasis is on the, "sell later" part - you will see more rejections than your first year in Junior High ... like someone has just posted, unless your going to get a better price, then drive this pup until the wheels fall off for the next 5/6/7 years then it's just not worth it ......... :)

This is like trying to sell a Rolodexter watch, it may look and feel like a Rolex, but it's not , so whats it worth .?

........ Are we back in the looking part again ...?

02 I35's with miles in the 15/20k range are doing in and around the $18's, low $19's with all the stuff, nice vehicles a lotta bang for the buck .. with you being in Tennessee, color is almost a no counter ..

The 02 TL "S", hey your right on the $$ $20/$21ish .. Navs.? .. you pay big $$ new for those things and then at trade time they are worth around $500/$800 more .. whats funny is there is probably 400/500 posts on the "benefits" of the Nav and how they just picked up their new vehicle 2/3 months ago .. we never hear the stories how they have had the vehicle for 10/15 months and the last time they used it to drive to Aunt Mary house at Xmas time .l.o.l..

GS400 (my personal preference also) .. 99's 30/40kers are doing in and around the $19ish zipcode, some might be hitting $20ish - the 00's are doing in and around the $23/$24 range ...

Keep in mind while you are looking you have to add another $1,0/$1,200 if they have the CPO ... (pssst, don't forget to add a fair profit) .....

Let me know how it goes ...

                            Terry.
  • tiredofmanualtiredofmanual Member Posts: 338
Sorry about that. I didn't know either, but I just checked Edmunds and it says that all LTDs are V6. Thanks.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... I don't have a *location* .. but I remember reading the word "salt", so I'm assuming this is a Yankee vehicle, today you live in Baltimore .....

There is no such thing as *Excellent*, unless your driving a 03 SC430 with 2,800 miles .. It's a 2000 SLE AWD with 40k, needs sneakers, we have hot and cold running air, roof rack, power pack and dutch doors ...

You were offered $7,5 from one dealer and $8,5 from the other, I would have to say it's worth in and around the $8,0 figure .. maybe the dealer that "said" $8,5 is the way to go because SLT's aren't doing that kind of money ..

$9,5 ..? .. not in this lifetime, that's a retail figure, plus they are kinda cold in the market and a little hard to sell, *01 SLE* 4WD's with miles in the 20ish range are hardly breaking the $9,5ish figure at the auctions ...... Edmunds, Kelley, NADA these are guides only, "guesstomations", it very hard for them to know market conditions .. the AWD and the miles save this one.

                        I hope this helps ...

                            Terry.

..... I remember this car .. pearl with 18k, it has all the stuff, had a little problem with a tree, or maybe it was a guard rail, no maybe it was the neighbors mail box- whatever ...

$20,5 is a very fair figure .. on the right day, buffed and detailed to the max, it would see $20,5 at the auctions, "maybe" even the $21,5 figure with the work being puuuurfect .. you know the previous owner and if you have to, you can always sell it for $23/$24,5 .. the color and the miles save this one ...

The car mechanically is in great condition. Clean inside. The only issues are typical nagging older VW issues which I haven't resolved. Two windows need new motors (I've replaced 4 motors in past 3 years...one of the reason I need to get a new car) and the power moonroof is off track.

    It's only got 80K miles.

What would be a fair value for this?

I've been offered a 2004 Volvo XC70 that I was told was used as a demo by the dealership. They're asking $31,999. Seems like a good deal considering that its probably a $38-$40 car new.

What do you know about demos? Is this deal too good to be true? Etc?
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
I'm going to guess Terry will need the following info......

    on VW:

    body color
    body condition
    any accidents ever?
    transmission type
    where do you live

    on Volvo XC70:

    engine type
    trim level/options
    color
    certified?

    interesting handle, by the way...

On the Jetta, having a jammed sunroof and inoperative windows shoots a big whole in its value. A dealer, who would be looking at anywhere from $500-1000 in repairs is going to pass on your car, simply because it's not a retail vehicle anyway (too old for normal used car sales at a dealer).

You'd really be lucky to see $500-700 for the car on trade.

Your best best, of course, would be to repair the windows and sell it privately, or sell in privately as-is. Check with your local VW/Audi private repair shop - they may be interested or should certainly know someone who is.

....thanks you very much. hey, I'm always looking...l.o.l. I like to keep up with the market and check in every few months on a few of my fav's, but your right on, i'm getting closer to pulling the trigger! i'm going to take a look around this weekend, i'll let you know whats out there.

yes, i like the i35's for the $$$. little nicer than the max for ~ same price. i feel they are a fairly good buy on the used side. tl's are always nice vehicles, but has to be the 'S'.

Fair profit these days are what.... $200/300?? l.o.l...... Figuring $21,0(maybe $22 if a great cpo) for the i's, 23/24ish for the tl's and $24's for the gs's.

    thanks again!

Terry, I was working on a deal for a 2003 FX a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately the deal fell through @ the last minute.
I was wondering if it possible to tell how much a dealer paid, for JNRAS08U83X000202 @ an auction here in Georgia.

    Repost....IS300 by racer63 Feb 01, 2004 (3:28 pm)
    Being nosy about this one:

'02 IS 300, lipstick red, 5 speed do-it your-selfer, black leather, roof, etc. New summer rubber. 20k in Noo Joisey at a Dodge dealer of all places. Advertised at 24,995.

                  =================

Depending on when he got it, the dealer probably has in and around the high $19's low $20ish in it .. miles are low, but it's red and it's a handshaker, not a big audience there .. should be able to buy it for the $22ish range ...

                          Terry.
  • tdomatdoma Member Posts: 48
It fell through because they said someone offered them a $1000 more than we had agreed on. My 'mistake' was that we agreed on a price on a Tuesday, but could not make it to the dealership until Friday, & did not sign anything before then.
  • driftracerdriftracer Member Posts: 2,448
I don't think it's cool to ask Terry how much a dealer paid for a vehicle. It has little to no bearing on the deal, and a dealer is in the business to make a profit.

If you want a vehicle that's in fair demand, you'll have to pay market value for it - just like diet pills promising weight loss while eating pizza, I don't think anyone should come on this site and basically ask for the keys to the dealership, whether Terry knows what something costs or not.

Do your homework the old fashioned way, make a committment, make an offer, and buy a vehicle. Please.

2003 Toyota Highlander LE by tiredofmanual Feb 02, 2004 (2:17 pm)
A friend of mine is looking to pick up a new vehicle and found a Highlander. He'd like to know if it's a good deal or not. It's at a dealer in the Chicago area:

    2003 toyota highlander LE.
    4WD 4door
    Black exterior, Tan interior.
    18503 miles,
    JBL audio
    Leather
    Spoilers
    moonroof

    The asking price is $23,400 ----- *V6

                   ======================

I hope your friend has already bought this one .... $23,400 ..? it's a "03" right ...? .. have it looked at Reeeeeal close, check the history .. $23,400, that's less than wholesale, I must be missing something here ..

........ Not a whole lot of these running around .l.o.l.. it's not a Corolla ya know ..

Haven't seen any 62's yet, but a few 57's have run through .. loaded up with 4/5k they are doing around the $275ish zipcode, these are around $320,000 range new, I think ... (ugly, spend all that money and have the 2nd ugliest vehicle on the road) ...... :)

I'm always whining about how used Toyotas are too expensive; you're better off buying new.

But I checked this puppy; to buy a new '04 is going to take $31k invoice + $1k or so, dunno the market on these.

Even at flat invoice, say they have a little trunk money going, $23 to $31 is $8k for one year and 18k miles, that's almost 50 cents/mile.

Buy that puppy, that's really cheap compared to a new one... that's kinda surprising on a popular car...

Hi Terry and other used car experts.

any info is appreciated as I'm contemplating the purchase of an '02 JGC, limited quadra drive, with K package (all the goodies etc) 27K miles (lt blue and in the pacific NW)

What do you think the dealer has invested in this, they bought it at auction as a lease return

    Thanks in advance

    Russla

                  =================

Ok, it's an 02 and it's GC Limited, we have 27k it has a good color and all the toys with the 4wd ...

If it's clean, no terrorists attacks, no Popeyes chicken under the seats, no re-paints, no Granny hit's, new sneakers and a V8 .. then the dealer probably has in and around the $21ish figure in it, probably can be bought for the $23ish range in your area ...

    Hello again Terry!

I need to know the trade-in value of my 97 Contour. I will be trading it in at a Mazda dealer in the Harrisburg, PA area for a Mazda3 in March.

    Details:

    - V6 automatic
    - Pacific Green exterior/Medium Gray cloth interior
    - 82,XXX miles
    - Power windows, locks, and mirrors
    - "Sport" package: Leather steering wheel, shiftknob, foglights, and 15" alloy wheels
    - cassette
    - two front tires match ( new at 78,000 miles when I got the car in Sept 03), and two rear tires match ( good condition), but they don't match each other.

Unfortunately, I do not have maintanence records, but I know that many of the hoses/belts were changed out just before I bought it, and all the fluids were changed also.

The exterior is in very good condition with a couple of touch ups on the lower rear bumper, and the interior is in above average condition with seats that show almost no wear on them (They look hovered in :) ).

I would be satisfied with between $2000 and $2500 trade-in. Is this a reasonable request?

    Thanks again for your help!
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    ..... Thanks for a good description ...

We have the V6 duratec, it's an auto, we have 82k, we have the froggy lights, power pack and the 15"s .. when you go to trade it get it CLEANED, dirty cars get dirty money ... right now they are seeing in and around the $1,500/$2,000 range .. the cleaner it looks, the more you get, no help from the miles and the color.

Thanks again Terry! I'll keep you updated. I was really impressed with the Mazda3, and I know this will be my next car. I just needed to know what loan amount I need to apply for, and your advice has made my calculations more realistic.

Now I know I should be thrilled if they offer around 2K :)

    Terry,

Need to know what the true value of my car will be when I trade in for a new 04 Toyota Camry or 04 Honda Accord.

    Details of my car are:
00 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro - Automatic with Manual Tiptrontic Shift
    Miles - 42K
    Color - Silver
    Leather
    Bose Stero & 6CD Chgr
    Moonroof
    Xenon Lights
    Alloy wheels
    Dual front & side airbags

Been in one accident, had front bumper, hood, & radiator and Xenon replaced. Hood & Xenon was OEM. Small minor scratch on drivers side door.

I should mention also that I live in Philadephia suburbs and the tires have not been replaced, probably need new one around 50K miles. Have followed all maintenance schedules.

Also, when is the best time of the month to trade in a vehicle for a new car purchase??? I was thinking toward the end of March.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... So we have a little meteorite hit to the bow.? ..

Audi's are in the same category like the Benz and Bimmers, the paint and finish work can kill you if it wasn't done "jam-up puuuurfect" .. without seeing it myself, I'm guessing a pro can see the new parts and the paint work (all they hafta do is open the hood) and it's going to come back to haunt ya, it might slip by a Honda dealer though .l.o.l. ..

Color is fine, miles are ho-hum, we have all the options and we need new sneakers .. with the new front end work, I gotta think you are looking down the barrel of in and around the low low low low $13's, maybe even the the high $13's if you get reeeal lucky and you catch somebody asleep at the wheel ......... :)

Your from the Philly area, so you have had lot's of snow and cold weather, the best time to hit those dealers is dead winter, like maybe the end of February, most folks think as soon as spring hit's the dealers are clamoring for business, they are, but they also realize they have had their "tumbleweed" time since December and they will work those spring/summer months to death ....

Good luck and let me know ...

Trying to find out whether there is a site that can tell me how much an older car might bring in a private sale. We're talking about a 1969 model vehicle, not classic, not restored. I can get more details if one of you guys dare to appraise it, but I was looking more for the resource. Thanx.

    I'm trading in a 00 Chrysler Sebring LXI, coupe...loaded with 53K on a 04 RAV4L

    MSRP on the RAV4 is $22.7K - TMV $21.7

The dealer is willing to give me $7K in trade but will only come down $500 on the MSRP. Stating that he was not going to make a profit on the trade.

Think this is a good deal or is there more wiggle room?

There are older car price guides at bookstores, like 'Hemmings' and 'Old Car Trader'.

....... $7,000 for the Sebring LXI with 53k ..? .. not much of a description and no location.

But instead of being here and reading this, you need to be at the Yota dealer .. $7grand is "ALL" the monies, the Big Peso, the Loooong Dollar ..

Coupes in general aren't breaking any records, a 53k Sebring for $7,000 big ones.? .. wiggle room .? .. You just have to worry they won't "wiggle" out of that figure .l.o.l. - obviously they are working hard for your business, the ones with 25/30k are barely breaking that .. sounds like a Great deal .. ~ be there.!

    Hi Terry and others --

Remember in our youth when Chrysler products were more expensive than their Dodge counterparts? Is that true today?

Specifically, I can buy a Chrysler Town and Country LX for the same price as a Dodge Grand Caravan SE. The equipment is essentially the same.

Would one be worth more than the other at trade in time?

Thank you. Enjoy the Florida sun. It was a beautiful day today in Northern California -- mid 60s and not a cloud in the sky. Sorry Jolie and others!
