Thanks for the info now here is the update! (How is that for quick turnaround?)
I went in to do the deal and sice they are getting ready to load it on the truck they hit me with 17,600 as is...or...18,500 infiniti certified. They were very adamant that they were not making ANY money on this deal and that the 18,5 number was rock bottom if I wanted it certified since the brakes would not pass the infiniti certification (because of wear)so they would be required by infiniti to do a brake job. I said that I was ONLY interested in "certified" and after some back and forth we agreed on 18,200...so I guess there was some room afterall!
It is more than really wanted to pay but after hearing your auction estimates...throw in a 100K mile "certification" warranty...a little of this, a little of that...new breaks...and infiniti pays for my first oil change...I think I did "OK"

I bought it in 10/04 with 67k for 10,900. I am wanting to trade it on a new rubicon. KBB says 7750-8375 on trade Edmunds says 8892-9593
The numbers you gave me were all VERY close. My dealer initially offered me $35 for my trade. When I informed them that I had an offer of $45 from a small used car lot, they raised it to $40. Even considering the sales tax implications, we were still almost $200 apart. At that point, I asked them to throw in a couple of hundred dollars worth of accessories. They agreed and we closed the deal. I think what I learned from this is that in the future, if I plan on trading a vehicle, I won't even bother looking at KBB, Galves, Edmunds, etc. Having someone in the business that deals with this stuff all the time is way more valuable and accurate than all of those other sources. thanks again and keep up the good work!

Many messages and a lot of people owe you thanks for all your time and effort. I'd like to add me to that list. We're located right outside Kansas City, MO. We are looking at trading in our 2002 Odyssey EX-L/RES (factory DVD) during the process of buying a new 2005 Ody. Our 2002 has no accidents, good paint, 38,XXX miles, small amount of white dog hair needing to be clean out along with toys, etc. It has always been serviced with records at the Honda dealer (a different one unfortunately - I'm in the military). What should I be expecting the new dealer to hit me for? I'm almost got him at invoice for the new Ody at this point without talk of any trade-in. v/r Sapper ==============================
Well thank you Sapper, might I add .. (I'm in the military) if it wasn't for the great job you and yours are doing, we wouldn't have a "me", an Edmunds or probably not even an Easter -- Thank you.!
Anyway ... in KC (I think you live pretty close to Host Kirstie) we have an 02 Ody EX with the Disney package, we have 39k, we have that friggin' dog hair all over the place (sneeze) and the Toy Story needs to go ..... "IF" it's a nice one with deep sneakers and 100% service, no Wal-Mart battles, no paint brushes stuck to the headliner, no 10,000 M&M's rolling around the floor .. if so, then trade side you should be in and around the super ultra tall $16's low low low $17's ....
.. **Unfortunately wifes disdain for vehicle forces sale...(sigh) so here goes- 5.7 hemi/RWD 1800 miles bright silver/grey leather interior no hickeys, deep rubber major options- driver info center, power adjustable pedals, seat warmers, dual zone climate control, stability/traction control, Boston Acoustics 6cd/mp3 player/sat. capable NO sunroof. Have you thought about replacing the wife and not the R/T ....?
Right now these things are kinda all over the place .. this one has no miles, right color and all of the good stuff ... as long as this one hasn't bounced off the trailer park sign .. then trade side, in and around the super tall $25's low/mid $26ish range, might "maybe" could get some dealer to stagger towards the $27ish zipcode, maybe ....
Don't forget to let me know, I would like to hear what numbers you are seeing .....
Where's the good news.? .. it's a black vehicle in Florida and we've had the Engine Elves doing their deal at 10k ....
If we haven't gone the route of using Brillo pads for the wash and wax, we have ALL the service records, deep sneaks and it looks and drives like 20k ... depending on the dealer and how they "view" the work, then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $7's, maybe on a real good day and the Easter Bunny is hopping in your direction, the low low low low low low $8's, Maybe ....
Down the windy path to Retail Rd, super clean, super Ad: $9,900 *asking* and cut that puppy loose for the first $8,9/$9,5 .... selling a black vehicle in Florida is not the best experience in life ..
Above is your reply to a question I asked back in late 2003. Well the vehicle has been hit again and it needs the rear quarter and rear door on the drivers side to be replaced. The insurance company has handed me a check for $3500 which they say is 50% of ACV - not enough for a total. I'm not going through another repair on this vehicle.
To refresh your memory:
1998 Honda Accord EX sedan Heather Mist color - halfway between gold and silver Boston area Leather interior sunroof, alloys, the usual EX stuff 86K miles Dealer serviced from day 1 so everything is up to date Tires about 75-80% Brakes about 50%
Accident in 2003 in which they replaced:
front supports front bumper and cover AC radiator exhaust rear suspension gas tank came out close to $10K
New accident:
Rear drivers door and rear quarter to be replaced I can't open the either door on that side.
I was figuring before the recent accident I could get in the $4-$5K area on a trade. What would I realistically get from a dealer on something like this?
Thanks for your input.
BTW - I'm shopping for a mid 70's Fleetwood Brougham or 98 Royale or a new Hummer H1. Wife wants me to be safe.

Saint Paul, MN 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Base 2 Dr STD 4WD Standard Cab SB 4.3 L V6 engine, 5 speed manual transmission 38,000 miles, original tires 90% worn Indigo Blue Metallic paint, grey cloth interior A/C, stereo with cassette player silver camper shell and rubber bed liner Regular maintenance, excellent mechanical condition. Interior condition 9/10, just minor wear Exterior condition 7/10, paint looks new but there are a few small hail dimples, and the bed has a few dings and inside scratches from loading but nothing bad. The camper shell is about 10 years old and in fair condition, fiberglass with carpeted interior. Should I replace the tires, or have the hail damage repaired? If I am going to market it myself, what is the best way (ebay, local paper, auto trader)? Thanks again for you time and expert opinions.
==========================
In the Land of the big Mall .... the good news: the miles are low and it's a 4wd ~ the bad news: the rest of it needs some work, we got the handshaker, we have that crazy camper, some hail damage, V6 and the bed looks like it got into a cat fight, other than that - everything is going your way ..... trade side, in and around the low/mid $6's, might "maybe" get a dealer to waddle towards the $7 figure if he's Dyslexic, and off to the auction it goes ..
Me personally, it's actually a great vehicle down Retail Rd ... I would get that camper out, a visit to the Dent Dr, a superb detail by some pro's, finish any service, get some Sears rubber on sale, find me a cheap bedliner and get me a super 4/5 liner Ad going on in the Minni/St Paul paper - and $9,900 *asking* and send it south for the first $8,9/$9,5 ..... oh yeah, wait til' Spring and clean up the Camper thing, drop it on somebodys lawn and someone from somewhere will pay you too much for it ...............

Terry,
Just wanted to say thanks again and to let you know how it worked out. It really helped to have read your post before a visit to the dealer. I would have laughed and walked out if I hadn't been prepared to hear low/mid $6's when I was hoping for at least $8 or $9. After reading your post I was looking into getting it prep'ed for retail road and sinking in about $1000 or so to get it ready. I got an appraisal from the local dealer as-is and they offered $6000 with no chance of a bump. About a week later I got an e-mail from a dealer about 30 miles away that had sent me an e-quote on a special order asking me to come in for an appraisal. They started at $6,5 and went up to $7,5 at which point we inked the deal. The quote on the new car from this dealer was only about $200 higher than the local dealer. Both were going to be a special order. In the end they picked up a car from another dealer that was close enough and everybody's happy! I know I would have needed to sell it for $8,5+ to match or beat the trade offer, which could have been ok, but I'd rather be done with it instead of sinking more cash into the truck.
.. ** is more than really wanted to pay but after hearing your auction estimates... throw in a 100K mile "certification" warranty. ..a little of this, a little of that... new breaks... and infiniti pays for my first oil change ...I think I did "OK" What do you think?** ...
I try not to think .. life is much better that way ...
$18,200 ...? .. you did really good on that dude ..
$18,200 - 900ish certification _________ $17,300
You did fine .. 100k warranty, great vehicle and when you go to sell it, you have the warranty to back you up .... sounds great.!
I'm hoping someone can help me. I am looking to get rid of my 2005 Chevrolet Equinox LT AWD. I bought the car when I had a round trip commute of 50 miles to work. I've changed jobs since and put about 10 miles a day to work now. I like leasing and really want to go back to it now that I've cut my mileage way down. I would like to trade it in before I spend any more $$ on it. It's exactly one year old and has about 15,000 miles on it. Interior is still in great shape. It was hit while parked at the mall though, but the damage was minor and has been repaired. Any idea what I could expect on a trade-in for it? I live in the Philadelphia area if that makes a difference. It's black with grey interoir. Optional package 1SE which includes leather seats, 6-disc CD changer, heated seats, power seats and On Star. Also has XM satellite radio.
.. "dealer said he called around and that was the best he could do" ... About a $34ish MSRP.? .. Sounds like you might be trading with an import dealer, the DFW dealers are seeing the strong $26ish figure at the auctions, and can't find enough of them, especially with tiny miles like yours ... I think you need to shop this dude around, what are you trying to buy.? (ooop's, I mean what does the Mrs. want ..?)
Down Retail Rd, superlative Ad between you and Dallas, big detail, $29,900 *asking* and wave bye bye at $28,5/$29,5 ..... the sunroof holds it back and the baby miles save it ..... whats your pay-off.??
My father is about to purchase a new vehicle. I will be taking over his (one owner) green 99 CRV EX (auto) with about 125k. The exterior is ok, interior is good, new tires and runs almost like new. I'll obviously want to reimburse him for the car, so I think the number between a trade-in and private party value would be fair. What would these numbers be? Please, let me know what you think.
"If" it's nice one, no rust, no Maaco, no Swiss Army knife interior, serviced from "jump street", deep round things and it looks/feels and drives like 50k ..... then a Vikings dealer will probably drop the the low/mid $6's, might get psychotic and drop the low low low low $7's in it (real money) and throw the dice at the auction, maybe ..
Whats fair for both.? .. I dunno he ain't my Dad -- maybe $7,5/$8,0ish(?) depending on what it may or may not need .......... whats he asking..?
For a co-worker: Where would you hit this down Retail Road?
2001 Lincoln LS V8 (the kid's 24, fresh out of school!)
Silver outside/light gray leather inside, sport shift (all V8s had this, right?) 6 disc in dash changer, heated seats, traction, moonroof...etc, etc. 34k miles. Really a standup car...no scratches, dings, smoke, creases in the leather, nothing. In Iowa City, IA. How would you hit this one up?

Yep, we do a little of everything around here .. if you stick around I will be giving out my recipe for the Poached Scallops with the Caviar Sauce .....
Anyhoo ... we have this 00 Jeep (my ex is from the ABE area) Wrangler Sport, 6 banger, handshaker, 70k, good color for the area, no breeze, 4wd, tunes, wheels and a soft top ....
If the rubber is deep, no rust, no I bounced it off the Penn State sign, no click click in the 4wd, no paint by numbers and the service is 100% ... then trade side, in and around the mid/high $8's, because of the area, you might maybe get a dealer to drop the low low low low $9's if he misses the no-air deal .....
Thanks Terry! We haven't discussed the price as it is not going to be an issue, I get a feeling he'll be on a low side and I'll be on a high side just to be fair.
..... Sounds nice, right color, loooow miles and all the toys .... Iowa City.? do people actually live there..?
Cleaner than the Board of Health ~ and twice as sanitary..?? ... dealer dropped the strong $14's in it, figure a this and a that and it hits the table in the mid $15's .... $16,9/$17,5 on the retail side if it's super sharp .. nice car, lotsa Bang for the buck ......... 24.? .. he needs to be drivin' a 99 Cavalier ..l.o.l... what are they asking.?
LOL...yeah, Terry; IC is the home of the U of Iowa. Pretty nice town, actually, if you're ever out this way (and I say that as a jaded east coaster.) He picked it up for $17,500 OTD yesterday, so I think he did ok by this one (he's an engineer; don't think a Cavalier would have done...LOL) Thanks!
..... Tax rate is 5%ish in that area.? ... so he paid $16,5ish plus the tax, the wax and the roof rax ..... good deal ... and it's almost as nice as that 99 Cavalier .......... ;^}

We (he) might consider dent-busters to fix the dings if worth it. -brakes new, tires new, all maintenance done at honda dealer as per owner's manual -no insurance claims
Bud .. between you and Aka, you need to be driving bumper cars at the State Fair - only .... what, no Mooses's's's ....?
Sounds about right, $4ish - maybe $5ish ... as long as you don't hit another meteorite on the way to the dealership ... ugh ...
So you're saying that before the most recent incident it was a $4-5K trade unit. I've got a $3500 check in my pocket from the insurance company. Do you think if I can get $1-1.5K on a trade I should take it and run?
I know the thread is so busy, it's easy to miss posts...thanks for your help, Terry. ------------------

Who me?? Surely you have me confused with your ex-wife!!!
Actually its not ME hitting things, its my hubby, my mom, my dad, ect, lol, you get the picture!
Thanks for the support and your sacrifice. It's a team effort.
You hit it on the nose. The dealer pitched his "best" offer up front in order not to haggle. He threw out 17000 after I told him I wanted 19900 for it. I was pretty happy he started there but couldn't get him to budge at all. Finally to close the deal he dropped 200 off the new car and threw in another 100 worth of accessories. Since the price of the new car was locked - I'm going to say he gave me 17300 for the 2002 Honda. Add the 1250 the trade in will save me in taxes on the new car and looking at 18550 net worth on doing a trade in.
I think I would have had a hard time getting that without putting 400-700 dollars in new tires and brakes if I would have tried to sell it privately.....at least I hope.
We're happy so I guess that's the BLUF. Again, thanks for your insight prepared me for the pitch.
...... Import dealers kinda live in their own little world ... Bimmer dealers think BMW stand for: Buy My Wonderful automobile - and Honda dealers sometimes think there is nothing better ..
Shop the vehicle around, or start down Retail Rd ... if you don't know what your lookin' for, then it's hard to point you to a direction ...

Hello Terry, I just found this board and the timing is perfect so..... by the way I live in Pittsburgh, PA I have a Pearl White 2001 Hyundai Sonata GLS (V6) w/Leather Package It has 90,500 Miles Options : Leather Power Driver Seat Power Everything (Heated Mirrors, windows, ect) Aftermarket Keyless Entry w/Alarm Tilt/Slide Sunroof w/Deflector Aftermarket Taillight Chrome Trim Aftermarket Tinted Windows Alloy Wheels AM/FM/CD/Cassette (I actually have a very expensive aftermarket stereo in now, but they never give you what that is worth) K&N Air Filter Aftermarket Woodgrain Dash Inserts .....I think that about covers it, It has every option that was available at the time except for ABS and TCS It is very good condition, no extraordinary wear...I recently put in some new items (New Tires Nov. , new plugs and plug wires (last week), new front and rear brake pads) I have taken good care of it, used mobile tri-synthetic oil, etc.
I am looking to purchase a 2005 Kia Sportage 4x4 Ex with Luxury Package (Basically the most expensive one) I have agreed with the woman on the sale price, but the trade is the negotiation point.....Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks a bunch (I realize it is Easter (Happy Easter), but if you get a chance to read this by monday, that would be great). thanks again, Brian
You MIGHT see the low $3s on trade side. I've seen a few Sonatas come through the lot. Boss rarely/never has more than $3,000 for the ~90K-100K fully loaded ones, 2000-2001. The $3,000 includes all the costs for bringing maintenance and repairs up to date, good detail, etc.
There really is little market on a dealer lot for a used 100K Kia or Hyundai. The long term reliability and repair history just is not there yet, even though they have improved quite a bit a last 4 years or so. The reputation precedes them still.
Thanks for the help Terry, Actually I originally proposed the KBB.com of $5,500 and I haven't gotten down to the nitty gritty with them about it yet, but they didn't seem objectionable to it........which leads me to believe that they must have some dealer incentives going on backdoor style.......It is strange, I know exactly what you mean about there not being a big demand for 100k Hyundai, but I see a great of higher milage ones (60-75k) with less equipment around here for an asking price of $8,900. I know that is asking, but still.......Anyway thanks for your help, and let me know what you think, I would like to get a little more than $5,500 but if you don't think it is possible (even though they seem okay with it so far) I will still try, but I might not push it and lose any sleep over it, thanks again,Brian

I bought it in 10/04 with 67k for 10,900. I am wanting to trade it on a new rubicon.
KBB says 7750-8375 on trade
Edmunds says 8892-9593
What do you think?
Starting to get short fuze on walking into the lion's den. Tomorrow evening.
Your advice on what I should be looking at realistically for my honda ody would be a of great assistance.

Sounds like you did super on the GTP deal ...... enjoy your new vehicle and have a Happy Easter ...
Terry.

==============================
Happy hunting and let me know .......

Terry.
Thanks for the note. My friend is either going to see it himself or trade it in on the new 2006 Solara Convertible he is buying (red, not black).
I will let me know what happens.
Thanks Again for your help and advice.

1998 Honda Accord EX sedan
Heather Mist color - halfway between gold and silver
Boston area
Leather interior
sunroof, alloys, the usual EX stuff
86K miles
Dealer serviced from day 1 so everything is up to date
Tires about 75-80%
Brakes about 50%
Accident in 2003 in which they replaced:
front supports
front bumper and cover
AC
radiator
exhaust
rear suspension
gas tank
came out close to $10K
New accident:
Rear drivers door and rear quarter to be replaced
I can't open the either door on that side.

Base 2 Dr STD 4WD Standard Cab SB
4.3 L V6 engine, 5 speed manual transmission
38,000 miles, original tires 90% worn
Indigo Blue Metallic paint, grey cloth interior
A/C, stereo with cassette player
silver camper shell and rubber bed liner
Regular maintenance, excellent mechanical condition.
Interior condition 9/10, just minor wear
Exterior condition 7/10, paint looks new but there are a few small hail dimples, and the bed has a few dings and inside scratches from loading but nothing bad. The camper shell is about 10 years old and in fair condition, fiberglass with carpeted interior.
Should I replace the tires, or have the hail damage repaired? If I am going to market it myself, what is the best way (ebay, local paper, auto trader)?
Thanks again for you time and expert opinions.
==========================
In the Land of the big Mall .... the good news: the miles are low and it's a 4wd ~
the bad news: the rest of it needs some work, we got the handshaker, we have that crazy camper, some hail damage, V6 and the bed looks like it got into a cat fight, other than that - everything is going your way ..... trade side, in and around the low/mid $6's, might "maybe" get a dealer to waddle towards the $7 figure if he's Dyslexic, and off to the auction it goes ..

Thanks again!
What do you think?** ...
I try not to think .. life is much better that way ...
$18,200 ...? .. you did really good on that dude ..
$18,200

_________
$17,300
You did fine .. 100k warranty, great vehicle and when you go to sell it, you have the warranty to back you up .... sounds great.!
Terry.
$7,500 .....? .. you my friend got -ALL- the money, the Big Kahuna ...
Thanks for the update.!
Terry.
Oh, What numbers would you recommend down
"retail road"
"Have you thought about replacing the wife and not the R/T ....?"
LOL!!! Talk about being upside down!
Don't forget to let me know ...
Terry.
Thank you in advance!
Sounds about right, $4ish - maybe $5ish ... as long as you don't hit another meteorite on the way to the dealership ... ugh ..
Terry.
Terry.

Updates are mandatory here ......
Terry.
Thanks again!

Please evaluate trade-in and retail road for his car as follows:
-Tucson AZ (Sweet 16 here we come! can Elite Eight be far behind?)
-2001 Honda Civic 4 door EX 5 speed (power pack, and moon roof standard)
-52,000 miles
-Dark blue with grey interior
-factory spoiler, alloys (stock size on stock size tires) tinted windows (it IS the desert)
-interior is good, no tears or obvious wear that wouldn't be expected in 52,000.. no smoking, no french fry invasions..carpet floor mats were just replaced, as the originals were getting religion...overall, it shows nicely
-exterior has a few parking lot dings (the hazards of college parking lots!) We (he) might consider dent-busters to fix the dings if worth it.
-brakes new, tires new, all maintenance done at honda dealer as per owner's manual
-no insurance claims

So you're saying that before the most recent incident it was a $4-5K trade unit. I've got a $3500 check in my pocket from the insurance company. Do you think if I can get $1-1.5K on a trade I should take it and run?

01 EX .. The miles ain't bad for the year, the color is not a helper, we have that movin' around thing between the seats, tinted lookers, all in all (based on what your telling me) it sounds like a pretty nice little Civic .... trade side, in and around the mid/tall $7's, might get reeeal lucky and see the low low low low low (did I say low?) low low $8's ....
Down Retail Rd ~ super Ad, super detail, super service: $9,950 *asking* and it off it goes for $8,9/$9,5 .... most times it's better to trade a Honda -- you pay taxes on the difference in AZ, right..?

Another AZ resident ... 01 GLS TDI Bug, we got the auto, 30k, the color is not your friend- the combo helps, we have the hurricane stereo, slider, wheels, cold pack and the warranty is a Big help .... if it's nice, no Armadillo attacks, no Maaco visits, no Bonnie and Clyde interior, then the dealer probably hit this one in the mid/tall $9's, maybe $10 if his bookie missed the NC games ..
Your "right" on the money ... $12,900 *asking* and cut and snip at the first $11,5/$12,5 ... remember, it's a VW, not a Versace ....
Good luck and let me know ...

Who me?? Surely you have me confused with your ex-wife!!!
Actually its not ME hitting things, its my hubby, my mom, my dad, ect, lol, you get the picture!
Payoff is approx 19800.
"what are you trying to buy.?"
Something with 4 doors and v-6
Looked at maximas, altimas, accords so far.
Next step?

Thanks for all of your help here and have a Happy Easter, also.
Dern right!!!
I just found this board and the timing is perfect so..... by the way I live in Pittsburgh, PA
I have a Pearl White 2001 Hyundai Sonata GLS (V6) w/Leather Package
It has 90,500 Miles
Options :
Leather
Power Driver Seat
Power Everything (Heated Mirrors, windows, ect)
Aftermarket Keyless Entry w/Alarm
Tilt/Slide Sunroof w/Deflector
Aftermarket Taillight Chrome Trim
Aftermarket Tinted Windows
Alloy Wheels
AM/FM/CD/Cassette (I actually have a very expensive aftermarket stereo in now, but they never give you what that is worth)
K&N Air Filter
Aftermarket Woodgrain Dash Inserts
.....I think that about covers it, It has every option that was available at the time except for ABS and TCS
It is very good condition, no extraordinary wear...I recently put in some new items (New Tires Nov. , new plugs and plug wires (last week), new front and rear brake pads) I have taken good care of it, used mobile tri-synthetic oil, etc.
I am looking to purchase a 2005 Kia Sportage 4x4 Ex with Luxury Package (Basically the most expensive one) I have agreed with the woman
on the sale price, but the trade is the negotiation point.....Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks a bunch (I realize it is Easter (Happy Easter), but if you get a chance to read this by monday, that would be great). thanks again, Brian
There really is little market on a dealer lot for a used 100K Kia or Hyundai. The long term reliability and repair history just is not there yet, even though they have improved quite a bit a last 4 years or so. The reputation precedes them still.
How much were they offering for trade?
Actually I originally proposed the KBB.com of $5,500 and I haven't gotten down to the nitty gritty with them about it yet, but they didn't seem objectionable to it........which leads me to believe that they must have some dealer incentives going on backdoor style.......It is strange, I know exactly what you mean about there not being a big demand for 100k Hyundai, but I see a great of higher milage ones (60-75k) with less equipment around here for an asking price of $8,900. I know that is asking, but still.......Anyway thanks for your help, and let me know what you think, I would like to get a little more than $5,500 but if you don't think it is possible (even though they seem okay with it so far) I will still try, but I might not push it and lose any sleep over it, thanks again,Brian
