Now, I've got to make up my mind if the $4K swing is worth it on the back end when I'm looking to move on to something else, somewhere down the line.
You're right.... I've driven the '05....nice cars, these TLs.**

I'm still financing my old golf clubs from the year 2000 (did I get a good deal.?) .. :P ......................... 05, 06 ..? makes ya think, don't it.?

I have a 2003 White Acura TL Type-S (w/o Navi) with a little over 32,000 miles now. There are some small scratches on the rear bumper. At what price would this trade at auction in the 08724 zip code (Ocean county, NJ)?
My lease is up at the end of July and the residual is around $20 because I paid for 45,000 miles. I see low mileage Type-S cars offered on Autotrader.com anywhere from $21 to $24. I've heard that Honda Finance doesn't really negotiate their residuals, but I'd like to put in a respectable bid anyway.
Thanks for your help,
Peter

Hey Peter, I'm fine thank you .... your not a pest if you keep posting ... it's just that I'm so darn slooooooooow ...
If this is a nice one, cuz' the miles are low .... and no razor blades in the seats, you haven't run over the ol' guy from the Salvation Army, the paint doesn't look like my hernia operation, the service is tight and the rubber is deep ..... then in March/April money, it's worth in and around the mid/tall $18's, maybe the low/mid $19's if it's a super star and it needs -0- .....
These are nice vehicles and your not far off the residual, plus you know the previous owner .... Acura will sometimes negotiate, but it's a little early right now -- check back in mid June, thats when Acura will get serious and start really lookin' at the auction reports - and thats the time you should be talkin' with them, not now .. :surprise:
Terry.
I'm looking for trade & private sale numbers for:
Kansas City area
2002 Dodge Dakota Club Cab SLT+ 2WD, Dark garnet red/silver two tone, dark grey cloth inside.
4.7l V-8, Auto tranny, two wheel drive, 42,000 miles, 16" alloys, pretty well loaded.
Major options:
Bucket seats, overhead Convenience Group (overhead console, auto-dim rearview, homelink & trip computer)
Heated folding outside mirrors, leather wrapped steering wheel, all power except seats, anti-spin diff, fog lights, etc.
It's in pretty good shape for a 4 year old. no dents, not eaten or smoked in, and if you ask me looks pretty darn good when cleaned up.
All maint. is good, new tires, front rotors & pads about 5,000 miles ago. Also, I installed a roll-up soft tonneau cover. When it was about six months old, I ran over Bambi.
As a result, the right front fender & headlight assy. was replaced, the hood, bumper cover & entire right side was "reconditioned". The repair was excellent, only cosmetic damage, and I dont think most people could tell anything happened without looking for it.
Thanks for any help. I enjoy reading these forums!
My question: The lease is ending on my 530i in mid April and I am just curious as to the actual value of it as compared to the residual.
The car is a 2003 Slate Green 530i with sport and premium packages + HID. Manual tranny (as God intended). I'm in So Cal so the only option (other than a slushbox) not on the car is the Winter Pack. It will have 45,000 miles when I hand the keys back and in great condition (well, minus one crappy cupholder). MSRP price new was $47,400 and the residual value is $28,900. I noticed used ones (at dealers) selling in the 32-35k+ range and CPO's selling in the Mid to high 30's so am a bit curious as to whether the car is worth more than the residual or if the prices out there for comparable cars is just dealer fantasy numbers.
Thanks again Terry,

What's the deal with Subaru's? I am thinking about a Forester XT (the turbo) and the asking prices seem all over the place.
I'm in Seattle. That could be part of the problem.
I have seen them range from $19,5K to $25k for a 2004 with around 25k miles on them. No granola included. Big range here; what do these things bring for trade? Let's say:
Location: Seattle
2004 Subaru Forester XT
2.5 4 cyl turbo
AWD
30k miles
Silver
AT
Cloth seats; no extra options
Good overall retail condition; no scratches, dents or bumper stickers (it is a Subaru)
I'd like to know what these bring for trade and at auction to better know what the dealer is in it for, as well as a fair dealer retail price. Again, $20k seems to around the lower end. Would adding leather and a sunroof dramatically affect the value? Is a manual tranny worth less?
Thanks!

> Believe it or not, this is a hard one to put a figure on ... Vegas is booming and it's a weird market place .. I get calls all the time from dealers out their lookin' for inventory, there's not much difference between Vegas and S. Cal, they pay big $$ for higher mileage vehicles ...
> This might be a great vehicle down Retail Rd because of the crazy market and it's still cool there, and most will miss the color ..... fix the dings, do the detail dance, get a Donald Trump Ad and $14,490 *asking* and cut it loose for $13,5/$13,9 ....
> Let me know how this one goes .....
You asked me to check back. . . And I got 12,500 for it, so I'm relatively pleased. We get a sales tax credit of 5.25% on trades here, so it really counted for over 13K off the bottom line. As I mentioned before, the tires aren't so hot. And I never had time to do a detail. So it certainly seemed fair to me. And the deal on the G35 was $100 over invoice, so I took it and ran.
You did good - real good.! ... in another 3/4 weeks, you wouldn't see the mid $11's on a good day standing on your head ..
"tanks" for the update .......

Third power, cubed .....?
.. hmmm, is that one of those trick math questions....?
Based on the third power and the alignment of the cube ..... this 03 LX auto AWD has 45k, so the miles are low, the color is good and we have this itty bitty $1,500 "kiss" in the rear deck ...... if it looks, feels and drives like an 05, the rubber is deep, no funny stuff in the ashtrays and the rear finish work doesn't look like it was painted by Carl the crack hound .... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $13's -- it will all depend on that finish work, could be more, could be less ....

Terry, you're killing me, here. Heavy hitter? I'm not retiring any time soon. I did make some money on my '05 Mustang GT, though. And, was able to get some change from when my tech company was bought out before the dotcom bust a few years ago. It bought my current house, padded my IRA, with some leftover to put JR through college and let me play with cars. Colleagues are driving 750s and S500s. Me? I'm messing around with Acuras and Fords.
Anyhoo, you talked me into it. I went last night and bought the new TL...loaded, navi, automatic....based on your always thoughtful reply.
You were spot on. Went in, offered $33.5K. They came back at $34K as their "buy it now" price. I offered to split the difference, and I owned the car.....$33,750....all in 10 minutes...easy/peasy. Plus, the sales manager said he'd play 18 with me on his dime. Says he's a high 70s man. At best, I'm a mid-high 80s guys. We're teeing it up on Sunday at his course (weather permitting). We'll see how much money he gets back on skins.
Again, TANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lease is ending and I'm wondering if there is equity in the car so I can purchase a new Honda.

Gotta admit.....automatics have come a long way, even in the last 5 years. They shift quicker, smoother and aren't nearly as stubborn to shift down when you put the hammer down.
I hope this concludes my car buying for a while. I've been through so many cars in the last couple of years, the neighbors are wondering if I'm starting a car swap meet. Although, I really like the looks of the new Challenger and Camaro, if they ever see production. Made a run at a neighbor's '05 'vette, but came to the conclusion it would be only a part time driver. Tired of having those, too.
The TL seems a good compromise. It's quick....comfy....put together well...and has enough gadgets to keep me entertained. Well, that's the impression so far after one day of ownership.
You missing your "Z", yet?
What would happen if you settled on a trade-in amount with a dealer and something happens to the car prior to making the physical switch? I ordered a car in January and met/w/dealer this Monday to negotiate the trade-in. This was done of course because we were under the impression the new car would be in a a few days. The new car still has not arrived. This is just a hypothetical question. :confuse: I don't want to jinx myself
Thanks
Assuming the work is done by an excellent body shop, why would you charge $2K for depreciation for just a few weeks? Diminished value?
Also we put the number on this guys vehicle a long time ago but he was out of the country and could not consumate the deal. We were ok with holding the number for a while but now the time between when we put the number on his vehicle and when we can put the vehicle up for sale or auction is going to be three months at least. Vehicles can depreciate a lot in three months and expensive vehicles like his depreciate a lot more then the average vehicle.
If you wanted to buy that car and you knew that the owner had crashed it into a tree a couple weeks ago, do you think you would buy it for the same price as one with no accident history?..... That's why the trade-in price would be lower -- because the selling price would have to be much lower.
Heck no, that's why I asked, depreciation or diminished value..... British_rover explained it well.
Yeah, but the nice thing is you won't be sittin' in the service department come Monday in that 750 ....

His dime...? ... now that dog will hunt.! ..... we'll see about that high 70's stuff ..l.o.l.. .. I'm always playing with the guys that can drive 350 yrds or are scratch golfers .... the funny part is, my ball "seems" to roll farther than theirs and I only hit 250/260 and I can beat them with my double digit handicap .... 3 biggest lies in the world: what someone paid for their house, what they paid for their car - and their golf scores ..l.o.l.....
great vehicle ... enjoy it and knock em' silly.!

Mornin' Tifighter .....
I remember in the late 90's when one of the "S's" (Subaru or Saab) would role into the lot with a customer and they would want BIG $$ for their trade -- and we would laaaaaugh til' the tears rolled down our faces ......
Now we still laugh at the Saab buyers ... but now, Subaru's are stronger than the 101st Airborne in a fire fight ....
They made their "niche" in the upper New England states with their AWD in those late 90's - and like a small quiet little Boston Terrier they've spread all over the market with vehicles that run 150/175,000+ miles with little or no problems and they still get all the $$ come trade side or Retail, even now ..... I might add, most of their business has been done by word of mouth .. Toyota spends more money advertising in 2 weeks than they spend in 12 months .... not a sales pitch, I just find that interesting ...
Anywhooooooo ...... in Seattle (the home of Isell) .. we have this 04 Forester XT with 30k (no CPO.?) .. no hydes, no slider, good color anywhere and it's the auto type thingy bob .....
IF~ it's nice one, clean history, no paint by numbers, service is 100% and you're deep in round things .... then the dealer probably paid in and around the tall $17's, maybe the low/mid $18's .. maybe pick it up for $19,500 or less(?) ...... figure adding "in and around" $1,500 if it has the hole in the roof and the moo cow stuff --- drop a handshaker in, then minus maybe $500/$900 ....
... these are one of the few, and I do mean "*few*" vehicles that I've ever seen that sell in a meat clever ............ it's almost common to see a guy in Denver drivin' a LL Bean Outback and shiftin' gears uphill in a $700 Brooks Brothers suit ..l.o.l.....
Terry :shades:
This is near & dear to my heart, 'cuz I spent some time looking for an older stick Subie. Then I gave up.
Strong resale across the board + incentives new means that at two or three years old, they're no bargain.
The older ones people start to ditch around the time when maintenance is due -- this will be on YOUR nickel -- or around the time problems appear. The latter happens when the car is 10 years old and has 150k, the rust is starting to bloom, but it still runs well, and they demand (and get) $3,000+++ for the darned things. Except not from me.
Call me bitter.
And the manuals are even worse... the people who buy sticks have a hold on them as bad as the guy who financed 72 months at 0%... I've scanned the auction reports; there simply ARE NO STICKS in Subarus. Every once in a loooong while there will be one, and the price will be almost in line with the autos.
There is no joy in used Subarus unless you're selling.
FWIW, $2k rebate on the "X" and (I think, check their site) $1,500 on the XT. Buy it now, buy it new.
And get the stick :-)

In Bostonia ...... 2001 Honda Prelude
- Base model ... this could be a nice one, even if it's a base ... the miles are looooow, the color is right, the clutch is new, the service is good, the oil is fresh and the rubber is good ........ no drive-by's, no KFC, no midnight visits to Maaco and no Wal-Mart curb burners...? .... then trade side, in and around the mid/ high $10's, might maybe get lucky and get a dealer to wander into the low low $11's, maybe ......
Spring is getting ready to pop in your area and these little Preludes get some serious $$ down Retail Rd (don't ask me why.!) ...... I think it's funny that people will brag about how much they paid for their house, but how little they paid for their car.... Why do people do this? I can probably understand the reason for the car, but the house? Why?
#######################################
Terry....ain't no bout a doubt that regarding golf scores (and the price paid for houses and cars). I suspect the sales manager will outdrive me. He's got me by about 4 inches vertically and about 40 lbs horizontally. Last guy who told me he was in the 70s actually shot high 80s....blamed it on using new clubs. Wheather around Cincy is 60s and rain today. That'll make the turf soft tomorrow (if we get off the tea, at all). Hopefully, squishy turf/greens will help me and harm him.
Like you, I'm all about double digit handicaps. I can do that all day long.....LOL!
BTW....you seen Tiger's house? There are some pictures running around the internet showing his home in FLA.....AMAZING!
Again, thanks!
Bought a car in '97 from a guy, then ended up working at that dealership for a year and a half 2001-2003, (got out of the car biz after that). But a while back, when I had the Camaro in for service, I heard he'd gone to the Infiniti dealer. Stored that little tidbit away, since the G35 Coupe has been on my short list for a long time. He let the Infiniti go for $100 over invoice on top of the $12,500. So I jumped on that deal.
I wasn't supposed to be looking for a car until July/August. But my gut was telling me I'd better trade now. I figured the value of the trade would drop more than the interest I pay between now and August. The spousal unit will never believe it was anything more than new car fever that got me to buy now, but at least I know I'm right. . .
Because.....
If you pay too much for a car = you're stupid.
If you pay too much for a house = you're rich.
Most folks would rather be rich than stupid, lol. Anyway; that's my guess.
Could you give me some numbers on the following vehicles? The van is leased, up in a few months but the Civic we own free and clear, just toying with some ideas...would like to walk away with two new cars!

Looking for your expert opinion. Will I get a better deal at a Mercury dealer on an 04-05 GM, or will I pay a premium? Will a Ford dealer be better to deal with?
I see on eBay there's an 03 LSE (with the console and floor shift) with 18K in Vero Beach. The Buy It Now price is 15800. Seems a little high given it's three years old and very little warranty period left.
How about this outfit on the East Coast called "Off Lease Autos"? They're all over eBay. I'd rather not buy off the internet, but if I can get an idea where best to shop, that's the battle won.
Thanks.
Oh, to keep this on-topic, how about a number for my car?
Palm Harbor (Clearwater/Tampa) Florida
1998 Olds Intrigue (base)
SilverMist with grey cloth.
Only options on the car are rear spoiler (factory) and integrated antenna in rear window (this was an option on first-year Intrigues).
53700 miles, a few door dings, but paint is great (waxed regularly), no Mcdonald's attacks. Only bodywork was 2 1/2 years ago when I was tagged by a parking lot hit and run to the tune of $680. Replaced right headlight assembly, a little hammer work on right front fender. Paint a perfect match (took to a local hot rod/restoration shop)
The standard equipment sold me on this car new. Traction control, 4 wheel disc ABS, cassette/CD stereo (not Bose), etc.
Hoping for around $4K for trade.... KBB shows $2500!!!
Thanks,
Deke

There is plenty of nice clean Grand Marquis around, especially in Florida .... the 03 LSE is probably worth in and around the super duper tall $11's low/mid $12's on the dealer side, it might hit the table at the super tall $12's with those low low low miles .......... $15,800..? .. he ain't trying to hurt anyone, but you could probably buy it for $14,5ish or less .. not a whole lot going on in Vero Beach right now ...
The thing about ebay, is alot of folks fall for the "buy it now" price .. but if you go direct, you can usually negotiate a much better price .. like myself on a particular golf club, the "buy it now" price was $199 .. but after I emailed him and spoke on the phone a few times, I got the club "and" the new Aldila graphite shaft for $129 .. a great buy considering the shaft alone is worth $80 .......
Anywaaaay ....... the base Intrigue is worth .. (drum roll please) .. in and around the $2,500ish range, might maybe "could" find a dealer that might struggle towards the $3,0 figure, big maybe - Kbb is pretty close on this one, and the low miles save it ...... $4,000.??? .. is that a new Radu I see in the glove box.? ..l.o.l.. ...... me personally.? .. down Retail Rd it would go ... you know the deal by now .. great detail, great pics, super Ad and $4,950 *asking* and wave bye bye at the first $4,0/$4,5 ..... I bet this won't last long if properly done - it's the right price and miles.!
Don't forget the update ..................
Terry.
PS: East Coast is a dealer out of Orlando(?) and they buy alot of vehicles at the auctions, I see them around quite a bit and like many dealers now, they use the eBay route .....
FOLLOW-UP!
Went to the local Lincoln-Merc dealer today to look around. Fell in love with an 04 GM GS white and gold two-tone with tan leather. Asking $17.9. Offered $13. Said they had 15.5 in the car.... Looked some more and bought a "No Sale Green" (so dark I thought it was black!) 03 GS convenience (with traction and adjustable pedals) grey leather, CD/Cassette premium stereo with 21K on the clock. Came CPO and got a bumper-to-bumper warranty to 75K. $11K!
They gave me $3100 for the Intrigue and I hadn't even washed it or vacuumed the leaves from the cowl!
I'm happy, the dealer's happy, and I'm back in a V8 RWD car again!
Thanks again for your service!

Congrats.

The Olds was beginning to cost me some $ in little things going, and there was a nagging feeling that something big was going to go. Not that I'm a pessimist, but after 8 years, something's gonna give!

I assume as a trade, I'll get about wholesale, perhaps $5K. Is that about right? Should I try to sell privately?
These puppies go forever, extemely stout vehicles... I"m guessing anything under $7 on a private sale will be gone in a weekend, unless the stick holds it back... it's a bit of a niche vehicle... just TRY and find another one.
Of course, if *I* should try and find another one, I'd trip over it in the parking lot at work... but the guy who drives it has a ring through his lip... go figure... one shudders to think where else there may be hardware... nice car, though...

They always paid too little til' they get to the dealership ....
"Hey, this is a $35,000 car.!" ....
"yep .. but you only paid $29,000 for it in 04.." .. (they always forget that part..)
Terry :surprise:
Ya can't go by that .. my boy Sergio, Maruyama and our own Florida SEC champion Camilo Villegas are maybe 160lbs and 5-8ish and they can just RIIIIP a ball ..l.o.l...
>>**Last guy who told me he was in the 70s actually shot high 80s....blamed it on using new clubs..**
My g/f and I were at the driving range last night and the guy in the next stall had a new set of Callaways .. new bag, new clubs, all shiny and stuff - looked good .. and he bragged on how he was hitting 350 yrd's (WHAT.???) ........... my g/f was out-driving him and she only rolls em' 200/210 with a stiff breeze and with the proper alignment of Mars and Jupiter - but, she's "RDM" (right down the middle) every time ...
Ya got his car, now take his money .....
As John Daly says "grip em' and rip em'" ..... enjoy the day and the new car ....
PS: Tigers house but ain't right down the street from me ... the difference.? .. his kitchen closet is bigger then my entire house .l.o.l...
