if you visit Hyundai Motors Korea web page, there's new Elatra's picture.. (They call it 2001 Elantra(Avante in Korea), because 2001 in here is actually 2000..) They have aluminum wheel and navigation system... I hope they come with New Elantra in US version... Also, you can see new version of GT.. the address is http://www.hmc.co.kr

or since its written in Korean you can go directly

    http://www.hyundai-motor.com/cybermall/showroom/

then click avante on left menu..

I'm not sure the Hyundai Korea will sell the New Elantra in USA as same as they sell in Korea..
The Korean version of New Elantra has wooden dash board for its interior and automatic air conditioning system.. and for the exterior it has rear spoiler and aluminum wheels.. the design is almost same.. excepe they used more chrome..

My new 01 elantra has the same problem. When I use the brake, I can hear the noise from rear.

I also noticed the other day there is burned rubber smell from front. Has any one experienced this before.

    Thanks
  • tonykrapiltonykrapil Member Posts: 211
Does your beake noise sound the way mine does... like something is clicking as you slow down? Mine is coming from the right rear brake.

Maybe we can figure this problem out. A sharp Hyundai tech feels it is the rear brake adjuster making the noise.

My previous post got mixed in with some garbage about US/ Korean relations; so I am posting it again. I am interested in buying an Elantra GT and was wondering about the experiences of Elantra owners, especially owners of 01 models. Does it seem well built, reliable? Thanks for any information.

This will be my first post. I have just test driven 2 manual GLS this morning. The first was a blue one that has a gas pedal that sticks when I lift my right foot. The second was champagne and it was perfect. The dealer quoted me $13,200. It is the Gurnee Motors Hyundai here in Illinois. Will come Monday for more negotiating. Any comments from anybody?
  • tonykrapiltonykrapil Member Posts: 211
I have an 01 and aside from this brake noise, I think it is a very good car. My auto trans and with air running all the time is 29 combined city/highway. I have never gotten over 36 highway and get 24-25 in city.

This car has been exceeding my expectations.

I also have a 00 Sonata and I prefer this Elantra much more in terms of power, handling and mileage.

I have no regrest. Just wish this brake noise would be gone already!

What package does the car offered at $13,200 have? Does that price include all fees? Taxes? Does it include the $500 rebate? If it's just a base model 5spd with no options, then that price seems way too high--near full sticker. You should be able to get a base model for around $12,000 or less with a little negotiating. My best dealer offer for such a car (last October, in Minneapolis) was $11,300. Some posters have reported even lower purchase prices for a base model. Since 5spds are less desirable to the general public than automatics, you should be able to get a good discount.
  • juntzojuntzo Member Posts: 2
Yes it includes all the fees and taxes and minus the $500 rebate. I'll do more haggling!

I came from the Philippines and for all my driving years (more than 20 years!) I have been using the stick. The automatic feels weird to me!

I will post updates when I get to bring home the car.

It has 46,000 miles on it .He says its very clean and has new tires. Is $4100 a good price. He feels the dealer may throw in an after market warranty.

Just in case anyone out there is shopping for an elantra around the Indianapolis, IN area, here is my buying experience.

There are three dealers: Butler, Indy, Palmer. The Indy and Palmer dealers are willing to deal at invoice. Please contact Elder James at Indy, or Kelly Green at Palmer. Their numbers can be found under the www.hyundaiusa.com's "find dealer" link.

In Indiana, the invoice price contains $353 advertising fee. You can't escape it. The Andy dealer charges $60 "doc fee" while the other two charges $100 doc fee on top the price of the car.

I purchased 5spd with package 3 + mat + mud guard at the exact invoice price listed here in Edmunds plus the ad fee of $353 and the unavoidable doc fee. With the 5% sales tax minus the $500 rebate, the total car price came out to $13321.10

Probably you could ask for more discount in coming days, as the dealers wish to move the inventories on their lot.

Always ask whether they can sell at invoice, and if they say yes, compare the numbers with the dealers. ( i.. what's your doc fee? )

Hope you all have a fun with the elantras.

A mega Dealer in the Columbus, Ohio area is advertising '01 Elantras with no options for $9,995.00 + tax. They were at $10,995. Is this the best price anyone has heard?
  • hkchanhkchan Member Posts: 420
Freight and rebate included? Absolutely no other fees besides tax and tags? One at this price?
  • floridianfloridian Member Posts: 219
cliffords:I doubt VERY much if you will ever actually buy a car @ that price. The big mega stores in Orlando pull the same crapy scam. If you go there I'll bet you that first of all they will only have had ONE car @ that price and it was "JUST " sold before you arrived. Look for the fine print in that ad. That price will actually probably be be after $2000 down, or after "customer loyality rebate" (must be a Hyundai owner), college grad rebate,or $400 or $500 processing fee, on and on. I would be amazed if you actually bought a 2001 Elantra @ anywhere near that price, but good luck it can't hurt to try.

That was Ricart in Columbus. I have been all over the ad and no small print. I called the dealership and they said they had in stock. I will check it out, because if I can buy one at that price, it's the deal of the century. Also, we have another Dealer here in Columbus ( Dennis Autopoint) who constantly airs commercials telling you to bring in any ad from any other dealer and they will beat it. I sent them a E-mail this afternoon asking what they will do on price. I will keep the board posted. I, like all of you, are firmly in the "too good to be true" mold. But, this is the home of the Honda Civic and maybe the factory is chipping in!

He is as crooked as a dealer can get.

I got my Sonata in Melborne and my 01 elantra and Universal.

    Where did you get yours?

I have heard of a Loyalty Rebate for current Hyundai owners? Can anyone expand on this for me..do you have to ask the dealer for it..does Hyundai have to send me a certificate or something...how much is it..and lastly can it be combined with regular rebates also being offered. I live in the Northeast and I'm not sure there is a $500 regular rebate any longer?

Waiting on the GT to arrive..twice Sonata owner already...'97..'2000..

    Best Regards and Thanks,

I think instead of buying 2001 Elantra, just waiting for 2002 is probably better idea..
The Hyundai just released 2002 model, and there's few minor improvements... I think the Hyundai Korea, or some other Korean Car Magazine Company will post their test drive results...

floridian: I heard that Dealer Shop ('Bob Dance' right<?>) at colonial Drive and Longwood got sued for false advertisement.. and they still say they got 2001 Elantras for $7000..

What would be a good price on a 2000 wagon? It has auto/cruise/tilt/cd/alloy wheels and only 8000 miles. Can anyone help me out with this? Also, what kind of mileage can I expect? I would appreciate any information available on the wagon? Thanks alot.
  • floridianfloridian Member Posts: 219
cliffords: well, if anyone CAN do that deal it would be Ricart as they are probably the largest dealer in the world as far as how many different marques they sell. Gotta watch 'em tho as they play fast and loose just like ALL the dealers.

tonykrapil & jyk1981: No, I personally would not go near "Captain Credit" LOL. I danced around with BOB (pun intended) on a internet sale and found that by the time they phoney-up the deal and add on $395.00 "dealer fees" they are not even close to most other dealers. Their appeal is to the poor slugs with poor credit that can't buy a car anywhere else, but you will pay dearly for their easy credit. Check the BBB and they will tell you about them. I have not picked up my Elantra yet, it is up in Ohio. My bro-in-law is a used car dealer and knows all the dealers up there. He hooked me up with a below invoice deal (no baloney, straight up transaction)I'll get it the middle of June. It's sitting in his barn as we speak !

littlejohn: as I understand it the Hyundai "owner loyalty" deal requires you to have title to any year Hyundai vehicle. it was $1000 off on any new car. that was awhile ago and I'm not sure that they are still doing it. They did not advertise it to any great amount. Some dealers even said they didn't know anything about it when i asked them. it could be the dealer has to kick in some of the bucks for the deal and so are a little slow to promote it. If you go to the hyundai web they still show a $500 rebate as of a few days ago.

    Floridian
  • bobcook54bobcook54 Member Posts: 79
There are no loyalty rebates currently on any Hyundai models. There was one on the XG300 that ended 4-30-01.As far as advertised prices, laws vary from state to state as to what you can advertise and what you can't as a car dealer. So what can be excluded(freight,"dealer prep fees",etc.)in the advertised price, say in Florida, may be totally different than here in Ohio. Also, some dealers skirt the law and figure that it's easier(and more profitable!!) to say your sorry to the state if you get caught. Another thought.......how can anybody compare an Elantra GT to a Golf(or any other car for that matter) if they haven't even seen or driven one? Paper comparisons aren't the real world and emotions do enter into the picture when buying a car-just look on these boards to see how some people just love or dislike a particular vehicle!

If I change the oil and oil filter, would it be ok to use a Purolator filter or should I go to the dealers parts dept and get a Hyundai oil filter?
  • lngtonge18lngtonge18 Member Posts: 2,228
Purolator would be a good alternative. They use an internal bypass valve just like the Hyundai filter. It is the only aftermarket filter that I know for sure has that feature, which is generally the only reason to get the manufacturer's filter. Purolator has also been tested against all the major brands and was noted as providing the best filtration, with equal or better performance than even the oem filters. And than of course there is the savings. Purolator filters cost $2.19 whereas my dealer charges $7.50 for the Hyundai filter. Just put away your receipts in case any engine warranty work needs to be performed.
  • smiller678smiller678 Member Posts: 64
I change the oil on my 01 Elantra and have been using Purolator (model L144459 I believe) since day one. They are great oil filters and very reasonably priced.

Have almost 9K miles and no problems yet (knock on wood). I really like this car.

A belated thank you to Tucan and smitty4049 for their answer to my post about DRLs. After purchasing the repair manuals I was able to determine that the USA versions of the Elantras do not have the harness for the DRL module installed.(save money anywhere they can)
I had to install a set of running lights where the fog lights would go and add a relay controlled by the ignition switch to get a minimal version of DRLs for my vehicle.
Also added a 2 terminal flasher relay inline with my 3rd brake light so it flashes when the brakes are applied. I have seen this feature in other vehicles and it seemed to help make it more obvious that the vehicle was braking.

Had my first experience with the service dept where I purchased my Elantra.
My air conditioning goes warm whenever the RPMs decrease and my transmission randomly shifts as though it was slipping between 2nd and 3rd gear.
Called in for an appointment and was told to be there at 7:30am. Dropped the vehicle off at that time and called them at 3:00pm that afternoon. Car had not even been looked at by this time.(why did it need to be there at 7:30??)
They called me back just before 4:00PM to say there was nothing wrong with the car. Since the diagnostic does not show any fault codes for the transmission, there can't be any problems. The air exhaust vent showed a 39 deg C temp at 2000rpms and there were no fault codes so the air conditioning is also OK. They also test drove it and it seemed OK to them.
Drove it off the lot with my son and he said the transmission seemed to slip when it shifted. The air also blew warm when the rpms decreased.
    Anybody else having similar problems?
Have been called by 2 different Hyundai employees to ask how my service experience was from Rick Case. Ranked them 2 out of 5.(5 is best) They will be sending me a form to fill out to give them more detail.
Still like the car for what it cost but have never been in one where the air and transmission performed in a like manner.

The owner's manual says " it is normal that a motor consumes oil" and they anticipate a 1 liter per 1500 kilometer maximum consumption rate for this car. Does anybody has real life data on this?
  • browneybrowney Member Posts: 104
Should have said 39 deg F not 39 deg C.
  • jkempskiejkempskie Member Posts: 49
I too have noticed that my air conditioning gets colder when the RPMs are higher (accelerating) and warmer when, say, I'm stuck in traffic. It's not very noticeable to me and thus doesn't bother me much. I have the 5-spd so I don't know about your transmission issues. Hey, if your warm AC tends to happen to you while you're driving around town, maybe you could try turning off the overdrive so the car will be in 3rd and will rev a little higher. That's supposedly better for the engine anyway on automatics. Just a thought.

Not mine. Gave it its first real test this week, mid-90s in stop-and-go traffic, and it was plenty cool with the fan on "1". But I did notice a slight whine when the compressor kicks in. Anybody else notice this? Other small cars I've owned have had a definte "clunk" noise when the compressors kick in (and a noticeable loss of power), but the Elantra just has this brief high-pitched noise with no loss of power. It's not real loud, but the relative quiet of the car makes it noticeable.
  • elantra00elantra00 Member Posts: 225
My elantra does that too. Thats normal, with the whine. thats just the sound it makes when it kicks on and off....i rather have that w/ little or no loss of power and uses just a tad more gas then a loud clunk. Now, my jeep cherokee is a whole different story. It has that "clunk" when the compressor kicks on...and then you feel an extreme loss in power and gas mileage is much worse...and the A/C sucks to boot! Its not even that cold. So I don't even use it...hehe

Here is more on saga of my continuing A/C problem.
I brought a digital temperature probe home from work and ran A/C temperature comparison tests on 3 different vehicles. Tests were done at idle, 2000rpm, and slowing from 45mph to a stop.
During this time the Elantra had a 13deg F change in temperature. The other 2 vehicle had a 2deg F change under the same test conditions. I purchased an A/C pressure gauge and measured the low side pressure on the Elantra and found it was 4.7kg/cm². The spec in the service manuals(which cost me $140) say it should be no higher than 2kg/cm². I will be setting up another appointment to have some of the R134 removed since it is seriously overcharged. I expected this before I started the test since I had a 95 galant that had the same problem and was fixed by removing R134. The galant also would lose 5-10mph of speed in the 2sec it took to shift between gears before the A/C was fixed.
I expect this A/C issue is also causing what I perceive to be transmission shifts that are harsh or slipping.
My gas mileage has also gone from 25mph city to 21mph with the air on.
I'll keep y'all posted on the progress of this problem being resolved.
  • elantra00elantra00 Member Posts: 225
That is quite an analysis! I would never have thought to do that. Perhaps the temperature change is due to 2 causes, which I believe are one, the A/C unit is a CFC free unit. I notice they are not as cold as the freon units, aka. my A/C in my old toyota corolla was freezing cold. Sucked up the gas and engine power though. secondly, it doesn't take that much power away from the engine, from what I've noticed in my elantra. Doesnt use as much gas either which leads me to believe its not as strong. The stronger something is, the more power it requires. My A/C is fine though. Im more of an open window guy, so I only really use it on the highway because the A/C actually uses less gas then having the windows open and the drag it causes
  • sfbay26sfbay26 Member Posts: 2
I have the same exact problem as browne, lowering RAMs cause the A/c to briefly warm up. Driving in "3" in town keeps the air pretty cool though. A recent trip to Phoenix proved the Elantra's AC to be excellent even in stop & go driving.

From day 1, my transmission always has an akward shift from 2nd to 3rd, but only the first shift after the car has been started. Happens if it is cold or warm, heavy or light acceleration. Just recently at about 5000 mi, the trans seems to be "cluncky" when letting off the gas at speeds from 30-50. It drops to idle, then while slowing you can feel the klunks as the speed drops and the trans downshifts. Made an appt for this today.

Two other problems I haven't seen yet -
The left front wheel has been "clicking" when turning or breaking. Maybe a bad CV joint?

2nd - Had the car in for a severe pull to the right. I was told this was normal torquing.
I understand normal torque will cause this. During moderate acceleration the wheel will pull at least 1/4 turn to the right if not held. Anyone else notice this?
  • darpin1darpin1 Member Posts: 49
I believe it's normal on front wheel drive cars. It's less noticeable on cars with lower horsepower or those with some kind of traction control system. I think the term they use is "Torque Steer". Because the Elantra has more horsepower than many compacts it will be naturally more noticeable. A technique of steering, turning the steering and using the gas pedal like you would going around a curve by applying the gas smoothly while in the curve to come out of a curve.
  • sjslosjslo Member Posts: 16
I've been noticing a loud click coming frrom my left wheel too, do you have any idea what causes it? Btw, 2200 miles and no problems to report except for that clicking sound

I just a called a dealer in Northern Virginia tonite and they say 5 more months for GT!...OH Well, so we wait...

  • tonykrapiltonykrapil Member Posts: 211
To test if the CV joints are at fault for the front end clicking do this. Find an empty parking lot for example and turn the wheel completely to the right. Then proceed to make several turns with windows open, radio off, a/c off etc and listen hard. Then turn wheel to the left all the way and again make turns and listen. IF the CV joints are bad, THIS tight turn test will surely make em click!

As for the rear brake noise I had (notice I said HAD, yeah!) was a bad rear wheel hub bearing. The service tech replaced the hub and drum and its been quiet on that side ever since. I finally found a sharp dealer mechanic and hope he will be there should I have any other problems.

  • lngtonge18lngtonge18 Member Posts: 2,228
Just a thought, but the clicking noise could be the hubcap. Some cars have been known to make this noise, like the Nissan Altima and Toyota Echo, and the noise was determined to be the hubcaps flexing too much as they rotate. The noise was most noticeable when the windows were down or when travelling next to a cement wall and it changed in pitch when slowing down or taking a turn. My Accent has rubber bushings on the lug nuts that help cushion them against the hubcap so it doesn't make this noise. Maybe one of the lugnuts is missing this rubber or is tighter than the others. Worth a shot.

According to my distribution manager for Hyundai, the cars are starting to leave the port as we speak(or should I say type!). The hold up appears to be the GT badging. You can read my post under Elantra GT post. Bon

Bon, Thanks much for the update! I didn't know about the other post group on the GT.

Well, turns out they heard the clicking too. They lubed & retightened all the frame/subframe bolts. Also removed/cleaned brake pads. The noise is gone.
The did not pay for the rental car i took out though since there was no "repair" and nothing was "broken." They couldnt duplicate the transmission problem though. I'll just have to monitor it

Today I got a very detailed "Technical Survey" in the mail from Hyundai regarding my experience with my '01 Elantra. It's several pages and goes into a lot of detail. It even has a place to complain about the sticky fuel filler doors that some of us experienced this past winter. Anybody else get one of these? My car just passed six months, maybe it's a standard thing after six months. No other automaker-not Toyota, Honda, Nissan, DaimlerChrysler, or Ford-has ever asked me about how a new car is holding up to this level of detail. Maybe it's another sign that Hyundai is getting serious about quality?

Hi everyone, I just bought a new Elantra silver VE automatic here in Canada. I love this car and the price. I wish they didnt eliminate some of the options like moonroof and keyless remote like the states gets. Oh well still a beauty. Could you guys let me know what aftermarket options you have added? Thanks

I need advice. I spent the a.m. today at my Hyundai dealer, we made a deal for a 2001 Elantra with option package 2 for $12,630, minus $500 rebate for a total of $12,130. My problem was the trade in. I have a 1995 toyota corolla with 82,000 mi, I owe $5300 (I got screwed when I bought it), I asked $5500 for a trade-in, they offered $4000--they would not waver and neither would I, so I left (on friendly terms) I know that the Toyota needs work and has problems, but did not tell them. My question is, what should I do. First of all is $12,130 good for a new Elantra (that included mud guards and mats, no spoiler). Second, what about the $4000 for the trade-in. I could sell myself, but it is a hassle and hate doing that since I know it has problems. Can anyone advise me.
