"also - to anyone out there - my cars engine light came on today, acting very familiar (no power, shaking violently). i assumed it was a coil. i turned it off, re-started it, and it was FINE. what gives?"

Maybe you need to use higher octane. ;)

The 1.8T in other countries is a different engine code - they are NOT the same exact engine. AWD,AWW,AWP,AEG, so many different ones - I can't name them all. The software also for other countries is different also. NA software is not the same as the software for the engines in Germany. So yeah, get your facts straight. :)

For once I'm not alone on this premium fuel thing. God bless all of you!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The GLIs are suppose to come with the 3-spoke wheel, it was a running change or something. I have the 4-spoke leather-wrapped one with the wheel controls, and like it better. I have grown very accustomed to the wheel controls.

I wanted to tell you that I rode in an 01 GTI AWW stick w/a chip today, first time in any car that was 'chipped'. OMG!! What a difference! The car literally pulled so ferociously, that it pushed me back in the seat. I might end up getting the chip after all...
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
I agree, although it doesn't really even apply to me. I would love to use some premium diesel fuel, just to be nice to my car, but this stupid state doesn't seem to have any.
  • cards28cards28 Member Posts: 145
    Vocus,
Refresh my memory. What is the chip again and where does it go. Not like a chip, but this morning, I usually drive in the Tip mode, I had to get into the traffic real quick and was in 1st gear when I punched it a little bit and the torque about took the steering wheel out of my hands. It just surprised me that the 1.8T could leap out so quickly. I've driven a turbo before, but not like this one, though. This is so much quicker. I could maybe imagine what you experienced today. So, let me know what this chip is all about again. Will it affect the warranty in any way?
    Thanks very much! :)
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
So, let me know what this chip is all about again.

a chip takes the HP north of 200 and the torque over 240 lb-ft. Some (APR for instance) offer the ability to switch among programs so one can get full power or go to normal power (for service calls for instance).

Will it affect the warranty in any way?

If the dealership finds it and they claim it broke whatever part...uh yeah, it'll negate portions of your warranty. In the old days with the 2/24k warranty, losing warranty coverage wasn't a big deal. The newer Jetta get the 4/50 which makes a warranty loss pretty severe.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I know this guy had other stuff in his car, and he said he just dynoed it 2 days ago at 201hp at the wheels.

Cards, your car has about 150hp at the wheels, just imagine having 201.. :)

when i took my car in for it's 10k service, they replaced the window regulators in both front doors. now, the right window rolls down/up slower than the left one. argh. it's not that much slower, maybe a second or so, but it's really annoying. now i'm afraid to let the dealer touch my car at all. thumbs down.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
My passenger window is a tiny bit slower than my driver's window, maybe .5 seconds behind or so. It's been fine all this time. I also don't have the new regs either.
  • sarah233sarah233 Member Posts: 161
no, this only happened AFTER they replaced the regs because they said there was a recall and they *might* fail.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I know what you meant. I was just saying my one window is a tiny bit slower than the other one already.

I have 32K miles now, and none of my regs have failed yet. I guess it's just a matter of time...
  • sarah233sarah233 Member Posts: 161
oh. sorry! doesn't it bug you though? maybe i'm just too picky...i just turned over 11,000 this weekend. (i don't drive all that many miles...) with this coil recall thing, it's the THIRD recall notice i've received for my poor little car.
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
Sarah: I'm with you!!! thumbs down to the dealer!!
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
After I got my window regs fixed on my Jetta I noticed the roll down was molasses slow in comparison to the old windows. My windows used to whip down or blast up in an instant. Now they lazily meander down and up. It's like they're living in Florida suddenly.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
My windows are pretty fast now, with the old regs. I think I will keep them in until they break or something then, instead of having the dealer change the parts.
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
Funny analogy about living in Fl suddenly...
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I liked that one too. :)

Well, woke up to about an inch on the road this morning in MD. As usual, accidents all over the place. (If you can't drive in the snow, stay home! Don't make everyone else' commute miserable because you're an idiot.) When coming out of my neighborhood this morning, this Malibu hit this old Toyota because the Toy didn't get stopped in time and slid out in front of the Malibu. I got stopped about 3' behind the Chevy, thank God. Also, I had cars passing me on 295 (Balto/Wash Parkway) in the snow, and I was going 55mph! Crazy drivers!

Local reports say we could have ANOTHER 10" on the ground by Friday, in addition to the 26" that fell with the Presidents' Day storm. I am ready to move to FL now...

Welcome to New England. Maybe Maryland needs to be considered part of the Northeast now.
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
Since we are talking about weather.......I washed my car this past Sun and it was almost 70 degrees. BTW: I live in Ga
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I can't say what I am thinking right now!!! :) It's about 20 here in MD right now, and snow's a comin' down. :(
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
But we have NEVER had a winter like this one in my 24 years. I never remember it snowing this much before. If this state could handle it, then it would be a different story. But right now, with ONE inch on the ground, they are closing schools and daycare centers left and right. Also, people are spinning out on the roads, traffic is backed up for miles and miles, and the rest of the people are rading the grocery stores. It's like people lose their minds when it snows here. They cannot handle it. They should be forced to be locked inside and not drive or come out at all.

No kidding, a few cars passed me on the road this morning, and I was going 50mph (limit is 55). They had to be going at least 70mph, with the snow coming down! Then they wonder why they have accidents...because they're idiots, that's why!
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
yep, i totally feel your pain. took me two hours to get 9 miles to work this morning. TWO HOURS! i tell you, this might give me bad karma, but i hope that the idiots that cause the accidents at least lose a limb. don't wish death on them, but they better suffer a little bit since i had to! ;)

as usual, my car does just fine. not sure why others out there can't get their freaking Toyota Highlanders anywhere without crashing. all these commuters in their AWD cars, causing accidents. they deserve to get their licenses revoked.

BTW, my new regulators are just peachy. knock wood. no probs at all. but of course, my windows are tinted so it could run up and down different...
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
I think the BIG problem with accidents is not the actual cars crashing but all the darned rubberneckers who feel it's their business to slow down, gawk and roll by at a leisurely pace. I really think we should be allowed to summarily execute all people who slow down and look upon an accident when they approach one on the side of the road. Not much in the world ticks me off more than discovering the bumper-to-bumper for 45 minutes was related exclusively to gawkers...as soon as we pass the accident, everybody resumes normal speeds! It's frustrating. I want to ring their necks and demand a logical reason why they felt compelled to hold up everyone else.

BTW, this is fresh on my mind because we've had rain in San Diego for two days and that makes our freeways a nightmare.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I couldn't agree more about the rubberneckers. Always happens on 95 and 495 when there's an accident. Everyone has to slow down and look, and traffic is up to normal pace when everyone passes the accident scene.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I am not touching the whole 'limb' thing. :)

I don't know how people can't get through snow in their gas-hog SUVs with 4WD without having problems, but everyone else seems to make it just fine in cars. I think the problem is that the drivers of SUVs think they're super gods or something and can speed down the road, and their 4WD will help them. NOTHING helps on ice. I slid this morning when making a right turn, but my ASR scrubbed for traction then everything was fine.

I didn't see any accidents except the one with the Malibu, and that was a little too close for comfort for me. :)

    Rain...

    LOL
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
How about snow, then rain, then more snow, then sleet, then more snow? That's about what the weather is looking like here in MD right now. It snowed the 2' Presidents' Day, then rained for 2 days straight, then sleeted some, now it's snowing again for today and the next 2. I am about to move to FL! :)

I might actually have to purchase snow tires for my car, with all this inclement weather. What's the best brand anyway (in 15" size)?
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
I have no issues with rain. The city planners and local drivers do. They built this city without any acknowledgement that it does rain once in awhile. One day of rain (say 1 inch) will create flooding all over the city.

Now add to the mix people who are afraid of rain and go 30 MPH under the limit when it's drizzling. Add in another mix of normal people who obey traffic laws. Toss in another portion who drive as if nothing had changed. Finally, mix in liberal amounts of fog and intellectually challenged drivers who outright refuse to turn on their lights in inclement conditions.

Unless it's pitch black, Californians refuse to turn on their headlights ("I can see fine!" is the refrain when you mention one should turn on lights in rainy/foggy conditions). They don't understand the lights are so OTHER cars can see them.

So with all these elements combined - overly-cautious drivers, normal people, daredevils, flooding, fog and no lights, the result is always accidents.

I left for work yesterday and it took my 1.5 hours. I left work at 7 pm last night. I got home at 8 (1 hour drive) and it's only 14 miles!

I spent 2.5 hours in my car yesterday to drive 28 miles. It was only raining! If it snowed here the city would shut down for a week.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I can see slowing down maybe 10mph below the limit in the rain, but 30? That's just too much of a pain in the rearend.

Also, here in MD, it's (supposedly) the law that you have to turn on your headlights when your wipers are on. Alot of people don't do it though. Even though the Jetta has DRLs, I still turn on my lights, for my convenience, because it lights up the dashboard and makes it easier to see. :)

I learned to drive in the snow here in Vermont and have been driving in snow for over 25 years.

When my daughter was learning to drive, I took her to a deserted parkinglot after a snowstorm and had her slide around hit the emergency brake, go backwards, slam on the brakes...etc. She is now well inoculated to slippery conditions and is a very good driver in the slippery stuff.

BTW>... THOSE BONHEADED SUV DRIVERS DO NOT REALIZE THAT 4X4 DOES NOT HELP AT ALL (AND EVEN PROMOTES SLIDING OFF OF THE ROAD) OVER 40MPH. 4X4 DOES NOT HELP STOPPING AT ALL. ALL CARS HAVE 4-WHEEL BRAKES!!!
  • cards28cards28 Member Posts: 145
Isn't that a name of a band in MD? No, it's Birth, When and Far. The last two snow storms that hit Vocus just missed Chicago by just a few miles before it meandered to the NE. My wife drives a Toy Highlander and she under stands, because I drove it into her head, that 4x4's do not stop any quicker, but do handle a little different. The Highlander has a snow mode to help keep it going in a straight line. If that's possible. But she is really careful. I've seen the hurry-up Moms driving their big SUVs dangerously close to trouble. There is that false sense of protection and nothing is going to happen to me syndrome. I just stay away form them. It's real scary!

I was out on an Interstate highway today and up ahead was a car fire. The front was just engulfed in flames and "rubbernecks" were slowing down to take a look. I'm just about screaming, don't slow down, what if the whole thing explodes? When I got close to it, I just tore butt to get away as fast as I could go. Like you say, the road ahead is wide open. I guess that we what to get as close as possible so we can tell someone about it. Like, "I was just so close to a car fire today and it almost blew up in front of me. Boy, was I scared."

Sorry about the snow and rain to spoil you day or days. We've been lucky so far, I've only needed to use the snow blower just once this year. I think of it as an insurance policy. Ya pay a lot of money and you want to try it out, but the snow doesn't come. Fine with me. I can :).

Question to you the all knowing: Do you get better mileage my using the Tip mode versus the regular automatic mode? BTW, my Jetta's windows, all 4, move at about the same speed. From all the stories that I've read here, I'm waiting for the other shoe to fall though. I have over 1,100 miles and it's been flawless. My fingers are crossed.

does anybody know if the latest owner manuals now recommend regular as an alternative to premium fuel to match what it says on the inside of the fuel door? VW changed their policy in the middle of the 2002 model year in regards to regular fuel. for the record, i still use the high octane stuff.
  • venus537venus537 Member Posts: 1,443
wisconsin is usually a big snow state but not the last two years. we still have some very very cold weather however which my jetta and me (or is it I) don't appreciate too well.
  • 20jetta0220jetta02 Member Posts: 6
I have a 2002 2.0 manual trans, and the owner's manual recommends regular unleaded fuel with a minimum of 87. It also states the range of regular unleaded fuel, in the US, to be 87 - 90.

It also mentions the 1.8T, for which it recommends premium unleaded fuel with a minimum of 91. It states the range for premium unleaded fuel to be 91 - 93 or so (not definite about that upper range, but the 91 is correct).

What engine/year do you have? Does your manual say otherwise?
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
I have driven up to Vermont in the midst of snow storms for ski days, and the majority of cars passing me are SUVS. You know what the majority of cars off the road are? Thats right, 4x4 SUVs.

There was a pretty good 4 car accident right in front of my apartment today, which made me pretty happy I didn't park on the street (sometimes I do). Somebody went to make a u-turn into a driveway, although its a in a Saab oneway two lane street, and hit the side of an SUV passing him on the left, causing the SUV to drive straight into the car parked in front of my front door, driving THAT car into the car in front if it. God only knows what the damage total is, the sound was rather spectacular from my bedroom.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Well there is another inch or so on the ground this morning. Yeserday's commute wasn't as bad as I expected, it only took me 70mins. to get home (normally about 45-55mins.) I had to scrape the windows and headlamps last night before leaving work though, it pretty much snowed all day long. Then last night, I think it snowed some more, because my car was covered AGAIN this morning.

I had a dusting on my rear window, which the defogger took off (which, I might add, is very strong). I have these wipers called SmartBlade (from VW) that show you with an indicator when they wear out, and they seem to clean the windshield pretty well through the snow/ice/slush. The ASR also helped me get started on my street this morning through the fine coat of ice/slush/snow that is there.

I turned the corner at the top of my street to find a Honda Civic EX couple spinning and spinning, trying to get itself free from its parking space. The funny thing was (for me anyway, since I was moving and she was stuck) was that the street she was on was totally clear except for the parking spaces. I would have hated to see her try to get that car off my street. Poor Honda, I guess they're not better in everything...

    i put 91 octane in my '02 1.8T. it's putting a *serious* dent in my wallet--$2.27/gallon!
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
$2.27 per gallon? YIKES!!! I though $1.44 for regular was bad....
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Don't wanna hear it! I paid $1.72 a gallon for 89 octane this morning! Regular was $1.59, if I remember correctly. This was in Baltimore city. It's about .10 more a gallon, on average, the closer to DC you go (where I work, for example, which is about 10 miles from DC). I saw premium at $2.06 a gallon a few weeks ago in DC...
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
Georgia has the cheapest gas in the US. People here still complain even if the price is $.20 here than in any other state.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I have heard some people saying how cheap gas is down there. I have never seen fuel going for this much. I remember when I first started driving in 1997, gas was like $1 a gallon for regular. Those were the days.. :)
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
I remember in the mid 90's when I owned a Jeep Wrangler gas was $.79 a gallon here in Ga. NOW THOSE were the days. Just a year ago gas was $.99 a gallon.
  • sarah233sarah233 Member Posts: 161
land of expensive gas. it goes up every day!
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
Sounds like a big scam to me!!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The prices have been stable here since around Presidents' Day. You can see them changing daily sometimes, which is really sickening. :(
  • sarah233sarah233 Member Posts: 161
the last time i filled up (about 1.5 weeks ago) gas was $2.03/gallon at the same station where it is now $2.27.
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
I filled up last Fri and paid a whopping $1.42. Good think I can go almost 400 miles between fill ups. Even Diesel is $1.62.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
At least you can get 40-50mpg out of diesel though... I have been crappy mileage lately because of all the snow we have been having here. I filled up from about 1/4 tank today, and it cost me $16. :(
