Never...Never...Never Trust a salesman that knocks or bad mouths the
    competition...Totally Unprofessional...Don't know a thing about your daughter's
'87 Cab, but that was 14 years ago...In the fifties, the Japanese only made
cheap transistor radios that worked for a week...Think about that, and then check
    out the 2002 Q45.

I have searched high and low for a 1.8t automatic but no one seems to be able to find one. I opted for the 2.0 fully loaded; i just left a deposit is this the right move? Will i regret it later? Is it true that the 1.8t's no longer exist because the wolfsburgs have taken over?
  • mellismellis Member Posts: 150
    Nuride:

If you went for the 2.0 with an auto then you will be sorely disappointed vs the 1.8T. The 2.0 will be SLOW compared with the 1.8T.

For the rest of '01 99% of the 1.8T will be Wolfsburgs. If you want the 1.8T with an auto then I would wait for the '02 (which will be 170hp vs 150). You will be happy you waiting IMHO.

Nuride: Go test drive a WE to see how the 1.8T is. The 2.0 is not near as slow as everyone makes them out to be. In fact, when I went to test drive a WE I was suprised how slow IT was after hearing all the wahoo's from the 1.8T owners. I will say that the 1.8T starts shining at 4000 rpm, but the 2.0 will get you going just fine. It has plenty of power.

But, if your goal in life is to race Civic SI's then get the 1.8T. ;-)

Hi I am new to edmunds and I have a few questions ????? I am interested in getting a 2001 jetta. This will be my first "new" car purchase... was doing some background searching and I think I am interested in a Gls gas v6 2.8l - manual - standard features
I want the power and I love everything about the car - I was curious about the initial offers I should make for the vehicle I've heard so many things e. 4% - 10% over invoice blah blah blah - I would really like to keep my payments around 300.00 a month - I do have a down payment (3500) and a trade-in (87' izuzu trooper - stop laughing!!) I just lack experiance and i NEED help!!!
  • roninjoutenroninjouten Member Posts: 201
2.0 is a poorly performing engine and from what I've heard, it's the source of most of the Jetta's poor press and low JD Power Initial Quality survey rankings (it's near the bottom among Korean cars).

The 1.8T on the other hand has great performance out of the box, is considered one of the best engines available and the engine can be massaged to produce even more.

Isn't the 2.0 essentially the same engine VW has been using for over a decade? I remember that we had a 89 Golf with 2.0L engine. It had enough torque for city driving but the car was otherwise a dog and had numerous electrical and tranny problems. We got rid of it when it could no longer shift to 3rd gear.

    HELP..........

Planning on buying a Jetta today.

Made an offer for 21,000 out the door including taxes and fees for a :

    2001 Jetta VR6
    6cd changer
    Velour seats
    No packages
    5 speed
    Blk/Blk

A good deal???? Too dark blk int and ext?? The gas seemed overly sensitive on the VRS 5 speed....... I was jerking the car........ do I just need to learn how to drive it smoother.....

    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • fischdafischda Member Posts: 272
I disagree with both roninjouten and bluejetta. First, the 2.0 is a very solid engine, descent torque, reliable and will go for 200,000 miles easy! Idrove one for 3,000 miles before my wife totaled it. Then i got the 1.8T (had to, insurance co. gave me more $ than I originally paid for the 2.0)!!

When I first test drove the 1.8T, the advantage over the 2.o was immediately and surprisingly evident - plenty more kick 'n the pants!

So both are great plants! I wonder why you don't hear about chips for the 2.0...

is it true that if you buy a volkswagen from one dealer, u can service it at another? I am in the process of purchasing one in nj, but might not always feel like servicing it there because i live in ny. Any comments? anybody out there know where i can but decent rims in bklyn for a reasonable price? I don't particularly care for the ones that come on the 2.0 or 1.8t.
  • roninjoutenroninjouten Member Posts: 201
With any car company as long as the car as warrantied by the manufacturer you can get service at any associated dealership.

    RE: MARY1421
That price you offered is great if the tax rate is 8.5% + tag fees...
Take a step backwards on the math if you live anywhere else in the US.
    INVOICE on a GLS, VR6 is: $18,164
    EMISSION EQUIPMENT(if req)is: $99
    SIDE IMPACT AIR BAGS(all)is: $133
    DESTINATION CHARGE(all)is: $550
    Sub Total................. $19,846
ADD: Dealer Installed 6CDChgr$400 (no more than)
    GRAND TOTAL BEFORE TAXES= $20,246 @invoice appox.

Anyone else who can revise or refine these #'s please do...
Yes, Mary you'll have to get used to driving the VR6 5speed. It is a severely high amt of power and torque to tame. Good Luck !

    HELP WITH WOLFSBURG!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I have decided to go with the Wolfsburg after all. How much did you guys pay out the door.... NO packages, sunroof, cold weather, etc. Just a base model Wolfsburg out the door.

DO you like the Turbo, they haven't had a great history. Please help if you can.
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
BTW...1.8T for VW/Audi most highly and most frequently awarded
    new engine in recent history....
  • roninjoutenroninjouten Member Posts: 201
Yeah, 1.8T is considered one of the best engines available. Don't know where he gets his info. If the 1.8T were not that great, would it be 7 VW/Audi offerings?
  • downbylawdownbylaw Member Posts: 15
aight, i ordered a silver manual 1.8t with leather and lux for $22,115 out-the-door, but i was told two weeks later that they were impossible to get. so i decided to order the vr6, which i found out was one hell of a smooth engine after the test drive. if you're looking at the 1.8t, i suggest that you DON'T test drive the vr6... you'll fall in love with it. i digress, but anyways, i'm paying just under $23,000 out-the-door (including tax and doc fee). oh, i also got him to throw in splashguards (installed) for free. i'm a bad negotiator, and i have no poker face, but according to edmunds i got a pretty decent deal. i just hope he can find this one...
  • krellmankrellman Member Posts: 1
I agree with roninjouten and vwguild, the 1.8t is an awesome performer. The 1.8t really does not leave much reason to want to purchase the VR6. I've been driving a 2000 model which now has 18,600 miles on it. It has been trouble free, and I'm still as happy with it as the day I drove it off the dealer lot. As for nuride who is looking for a good deal on wheels/tires, should check out tirerack.com. I have purchased a few sets of wheel and tire combos from them with great success and at much better pricing than I could find locally.
  • mellismellis Member Posts: 150
I have to disagree on driving the V6. I loathed the V6 from a handling/braking standpoint. Too much weight on the front end! I liked the chipped 1.8T much better.
  • mary1421mary1421 Member Posts: 8
PLEASE........... What should I pay for:

    2001 WOLFSBURG
    No Sunroof
    6 disc CD changer

    MSRP: 20,250

Is $21,000 a rip off out the door???

SHOULD I GET THE IN-DASH CD PLAYER????
  • k_h_bk_h_b Member Posts: 54
I paid 20,100 with all 3 options. Don't pay anymore than 3-500 over invoice.
  • roninjoutenroninjouten Member Posts: 201
I agree with Mellis about the VR6. While it's a smooth engine, it's far too heavy and impacts the handling of the car drastically compared to a 1.8T (especially chipped ones I imagine). I like the power, but if I can't push deep into a corner, then the car is sorta useless to me.
  • mary1421mary1421 Member Posts: 8
Do you pay for the whole destination charge of $525??? or do you pay for part of/ none of it? Should I include that in addition to the invoice price? HOW MUCH OUT THE DOOR DID YOU GUYS PAY FOR THIS CAR W/NO SUNROOF?????????????
  • mary1421mary1421 Member Posts: 8
Is the clutch effected by the turbo??? Does it wear out any sooner?

Does the "turbo lag" effect you guys on hills......

    PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!!!!!
  • nuridenuride Member Posts: 19
help which is a better decision, a fully loaded 2.o including leather or a 1.8t with velour? i really wanted 1.8t withleather but impossible to get. Some dealer told me he had a 1.8 t black on black velour lux package he claims no one in dealership knew it was there and did not put it back in inventory. I had 2 different dealers try to locate this car to no avail. should i give up the engine for leather or wait for both?
  • balticjetta18tbalticjetta18t Member Posts: 146
    A Wolfsburg Jetta Pricing:
    INVOICE BASE:.............$17,713
    SIDE AIR-CURTAINS:........$133
    EMMISIONS EQP (if req):...$99
    DESTINATION CHARGE:........$550
    Sub Total @ INVOICE:......$18,495

FULL M.S.R.P. for this example car is: $20,250
+ appox. $400 (no more than for the CD Changer installed)
Mary, put aside the out the door stuff and concentrate on the actual cost for your BEST deal. The #'s might look better for a deal in your mind if out the door is your only concern.
No matter what the tax rate is in your State, City, County + tag fees, they will be added on with no exception... Now sit down and don't panic and put yourself in control of the deal.
The clutch on the 1.8T will of course last for many many miles if you do it well. As for on a hill; if your RPMS fall below 2000, then you'll need to downshift. The Turbo boost will add power as the ECU reads the demands of your driving situation. You will be satisfied as long as you shift for optimum power when you need it. The 5 speed will put you in control of that and give you a more deserving fun factor !
& BTW: The Turbo Lag in this engine is very minimal if that...
  • balticjetta18tbalticjetta18t Member Posts: 146
No matter what you do, get the 1.8T. Do not compare engine vs. leather. Get your cake and eat it too ! Remember, you'll buy this only once and the dealers have to sell many cars to many others and try to offload what they have by talking a perspective customer into it. Remember that you are the one stroking the check not them. If you must compromise, then consider the Wolfsburg with Moonroof + Monsoon. (unless you have to have an automatic tranny) Good Luck... !
  • nuridenuride Member Posts: 19
i really appreciate your input thanks alot! the only problem with the wolfsburg is that it's a manual. I do not drive manuals, i have beendriving for over 15 yrs and never had the desire to drive one unless its a porsche or something worthwhile drivinga stick with! i might just wait awhile to get exactly what i want or opt for the golf 1.8t?
  • balticjetta18tbalticjetta18t Member Posts: 146
OK, I understand. The automatic is the issue. You know that the Wolfsburgs are a 20K production run this year and are hogging up the 1.8T engines that would otherwise have been installed in GLS's with automatics, leather and the rest of the color choices and goodies etc. The 2002 model will have the Horsepower increased to 170/180HP and the extra torque to boot. Maybe you can order an 01 or 02 the way you want it.
  • roninjoutenroninjouten Member Posts: 201
I wanted a 1.8T with leather. Obviously that's a pipe dream in 2001. I'm stuck waiting until September. By then I may opt for the cheaper, faster and more reliable Sentra Spec-V. We'll see.

    Hi everyone,

I am looking at the WE Jetta but have yet to drive one. Have to line up the coin to buy first. Anyway, someone mentioned above they cant find 1.8Ts on non-WE Jettas. I have just been to 3 lots in Houston, and there are oodles of manual and automatic 1.8Ts that are nonWE. Few WEs though, especially in Galactic Blue/Black which is the one I really want.

Anyway, check houston (DeMontrond, Archer) if you want a good selection of non-WE 1.8Ts (most seem to come with lux package, sunroof). Haven't seen a cold weather package yet, but then again this is texas where people cant even drive in light rain to save their lives - so I guess the lack of cold packages isnt surprising. Most WEs are packaged with moonroof + monsoon and the yucky barf-beige interior (I reckon the blacks have been scooped up).

By the way, is there a premium for WE or can I hope to get out the door for approx. $20500?

I know there's been lots of discussion about chipping, but to my memory, nobody has posted who has actually chipped their engine. So, ANY TAKERS?

    - Did you just get the chip, or go with the spare ECU as well?
    - Any problems with dealer service? Did you consult dealer before chipping?
    - How's performance? APR claims 196 hp and 240 ft/lbs. Wow!
    - Did it affect gas milage, engine temperature, effectiveness of ASR, etc?
    - Overall impressions?
  • k_h_bk_h_b Member Posts: 54
Read the 1.8T forum on http://www.vwvortex.com for answers on chipping.

Why doesn't my '01 GLS Jetta have rear cup holders? The manual shows them but I don't have any. Also, what's the musty smell coming from the AC? How do I get rid of this smell?
    Thanks.
  • jpvwaudijpvwaudi Member Posts: 139
There are no cup holders because no one old enough to be able to handle a soda in a moving vehicle can fit in the back seat!! I can't wait until the redesign....
  • roninjoutenroninjouten Member Posts: 201
The back of the Jetta is nearly cavernous for most women and any guy under about 5-nine. Cramped backseats are things like a Celica or a Porsche.

Right behind the center arm rest/console, under the ash tray...

That's what puzzeling. I have pushed and nothing. I am missing the cupholders for some reason. It's that unusual?

    Hi again -

Do any of you know how the 2001 Jetta or Jetta 1.8T does in the consumer reports ratings? Does it have mostly black or red spots?

Thanks in advance, I hope to test drive one tomorrow!

CR rates the 2001 Jetta as below average in reliability so they no longer recommend the car.

    Hi k_h_b,
I was reading your post on Wolfsburg you bought. I'm interested in getting one too and looks like you got a pretty good deal. The price you got, $20100 w/ all options, was that before or after all other fees and tax? can you email me at hy0ga@yahoo.com? Thanks in advance!
  • flacaflaca Member Posts: 168
cupholder: it is not there!!! I have pulled, pressed... There is no symbol at all like of the one in the front. I have no cupholders...have others experienced this also? I am not nuts or blind.
  • obmotobmot Member Posts: 61
There are plenty of those models on the lots here in Houston, but that might be because I think Houston or Galveston is the port of entry for the Jetta so there seems to be a very good selection in this area.

Did a test drive of a WE today. Great car, very tight and solid (jeez 8 airbags...will need "pins of life" to get me out after an accident!). The only thing lacking is power, but I am comparing this to my 5.0L mustang it isnt a fair comparison(can pull from 15 to 70mph in second gear on the mustang with gut wrenching torque). I also don't like that the only way to play a CD is by accessing the trunk CD changer. Anyway, I think I am sold on the Jetta and just have to line up the coin to buy a blue/black WE. Hard to find one with bum warmers down here though :(

Oh, the rear cupholder was definitely there.

someone left mine out. Cupholders were not installed in my jetta. Believe me, I have looked hard. Really wierd, i guess.

The 2002 are supposed to have 170 official hp (really 180hp) and there is talk a CD player will finally be standard on the higher end models. Guess VW has decided the CD is not just a fad!

and sat in a Jetta GLX and first off, there is no rear cupholder but my 2001 Jetta GLS has it, and my leather seems of better quality than the one at the car show
