i would of loved to have gotten the vr6 or 1.8T but the 2.0 really isn't that bad, I feel that 0-35 or so is pretty pathetic but once you hit 40, you can get it up ti 60 and on like cake, ive gotten well into the 90's and it sills feels like goin...i know i know, i need to slow down, :)

I noticed while selecting options for a GLS VR6 that I could select velour, but not cloth. what is the difference?
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
Cloth is available only with the GL, whereas Velour is only available with the GLS...With
the miraculously; magnetic characteristics of the Velour, to every form of lint known to
Modern Man...Go with the leather ...
  • balticjetta18tbalticjetta18t Member Posts: 146
The velour is more luxurious as the GLS is a more upscale car than the "cloth" in the GL model. The Wolfsburg only comes with sport cloth I believe. The velour is very handsome, comfortable and sporty. Go to your local dealer to see the actual difference in person. Leather is optional on the GLS and standard on the GLX...

I dont hear many people saying that they have bought a Wolfsburg. With the WB price being about the same as nicely featured GLS's, I was wondering if there is a problem with these cars or if there is a better jetts for the money with similiar features.
I test drove a WB today and rather enjoyed it.
I am at the end of my lease on a 98 Civic and I would really like to get a SUV but my budget wont allow it. I was thinking of some alternatives to compact/mid sized cars. Dont really want to go the Accord or Camry route (wife has Camry). Camry is a nice dependable car but they are a dime a dozen. So i stumbled across the Jettas. The salesman directed me towards the WB today. Maybe they have incentives on them ..I dont know.
Anyways, I was looking at a 39 or 48 month lease on one. Selling price was about 20,841.00 not spectacular but not the wordt. The only thing that I dont like about the VW's are the warranties, especially if I am leasing. The lease will be longer than the warranty. I would hate to get stuck paying for major repairs just to turn the damn thing back in at end of lease.
I would really like to buy, but I dont think I can afford full payments on this car right now.
If someone could give me your thoughts on this WB car and any other Jettas (comparitively equipped) I would appreciate it.
If you care to let me know what kind of APR and monthly payment you all are paying for your vehicle too if you bought.

    thnx

Lovingly referred to as the WE (not WB), its probably the best deal out there right now on a Jetta. There's not many out there, or being spoken of in here, because it's a special edition and hasn't been on the market that long.

I test drove one and it's a fine car, but not that special. Probably the biggest factor turning people away from the WE is the color limitations. Some people love those BBS wheels, but I'm sorry, they don't do a thing for me. The Jetta looks much better with a nice 5-6 spoke wheel, IMHO.

And, yes, I am sure there are special perks to the dealers from VW for selling the most WE's. As for lease/buy, I thought there was some special financing going on? Oh crap..I think that ended yesterday! Ouch!! There were having some 4-5% thing going on. Oh well...Good luck with your decision, and I'll make one last comment: You'll have a heck of a lot more fun driving a Jetta than some Toyota or Honda. If you get a Camry, you'll regret it every stinking time a Jetta whizzes past you and you see that Perma-Smile on the driver's face.

You'll think, "Man! I coulda had one of those, but I'm stuck with soccer-mom's car!"

But, "That's just my opinion. I could be wrong."

about the warranty - buy the extended warranty. It only adds up to $10.00 a month. Worth the peace of mind. That's what I did. I just got my Jetta and love it. I had a Camry for 9 years and needed a change. The Jetta is really fun to drive. Go for it. And forget those SUV's - gas guzzlers - for sure. I am so sick of them too!

I live in Dallas and bought a 01 gls auto 2.0 with the sunroof/monsoon sound/seat warmers the sticker on it was 20999.00 I got it at $300 over invoice so it was $19500 I traded in my 93 saturn sc2 and got $1800 I did buy the extended warranty to 5 year 75k miles. The rate I got from VW is 5.9% so my payments are about $370 a month for 60 months..

    Hope this helps

Just bought mine from Quirk in Quincy, MA. Rookie salesperson, knew more about the car than he did.

But got a 2001 Baltic Green GLS, with Monsoon,
5 speed, extended warranty, 5.5% financing, all for $16,900

I drive a Wolfsburg edition, and love it. Even though it is not much different than a 1.8T/5 speed, the wheels and the little silver badge make me feel kinda special. Before I decided on the WE, i test drove a GLS VR6 5 speed, and there is a definate difference in the way the car handles, which is VERY important to me. Granted the VR6 did not have the sport suspension, the front of the car liked to dive harder under heavy braking. Not that it'a huge deal to most, it is to me. But as they say, to each his own. Well, happy driving to everyone, even if you dont have the little silver badge!!!

Have had my WE for a week now and love it! I wasn't too sure about the look of the wheels but now I love 'em. I have had a lot of "looks" and comments about how nice the car is. A comment on the seats for those of you considering a WE. The WE comes with "wrap around sport seats" they are very comfortable and I have had 0 lint problems. I bought the beige and it looks very classy. The outer part of the seats are cloth but the part you sit on is a velour/cloth combo.

I got a pretty good deal I think..$20,200 for moonroof, monsoon, CD player, cold weather package.

If you have any more Wolfie questions feel free to email me!
  • balticjetta18tbalticjetta18t Member Posts: 146
The price you just stated @16,900 and 5.5% sounds off the norm. Did you actually get a "GL" or does your price quote include a trade-in net balance. Also I know that the rate for 60mos was 5.9% from VWcredit. Confirm the info and more of your options for all of us...Thanks!

I am dying to get myself into a 1.8t 5 speed, but don't know whether I should wait for the 2002's to come out. Does anyone know if there are any re-designs planned, or if the new jetta's will be that different than what's out now. I've heard there will be some horsepower added. Also, is the VR6 so much faster than the 1.8t that it's worth the extra money?
  • k_h_bk_h_b Member Posts: 54
I've put a little over 7,000 miles on my Galactic blue Wolfsburg in the past 2 months. I shopped for the right jetta for about 3 months, I couldn't have picked a better package. The Wheels are Pimp, the sport suspension is very nice, sport seats/sport cloth are more comfortable than velour or leather, as far as I'm concerned. The leather steering wheel always feels. You just gotta love those wheels :O. All the special features .. moonroof heated seats .. 16' BBS wheels.. for 20,100. Velour blows and leathers much more, plus you're stuck with other packages just to get the one thing you want. If you Like to drive, Like to drive stick and Like Jetta's I don't see why anyone would get anything else. Unless you realyl love leather ;o. PS The 2.0 is a wheezy dog, please stop saying that it can "go". 96 Civic's can burn you 2.0 folks :(
Hehe, also, No problems or noises or rattles or ANYTHING over the 7,193 miles i've put on since february 13th. (One cross country trip wisconsin to seattle and back involved)
  • roninjoutenroninjouten Member Posts: 201
So far the best offer I've received on a WE with Moonroof, monsoon and butt warmers is 19,950. Too bad the interior is cloth.

On the 2002's the word is 170 hp from the 1.8T. Personally, if you can hold off 6 months, then do so. Also odds are good from what I've been told that finding a 1.8T in anything other than WE for the rest of the year will be nigh impossible. This bugs me tremendously as the WE has, IMO, an interior I won't pay 5k for, let alone 20k. So I'm left waiting for the 2002 1.8T's so I can get leather.

By then though I may just bypass the Jetta and get a year or two old Audi or 323i.

Well, I bought a new Jetta GLX with everything on it (including the 17" wheels)... I love the looks that I get. I have had it a week, and I have put nearly 1500 miles on it. I just got back from a trip to Baltimore, from where I live in Ohio, and I must say that this car is a treat to drive. Now that I have completed the break-in, I am excited to explore the full capabilities of this car, although I will have to remember how expensive the rubber on this car is. One note: I was going to get the oil changed early (before 5,000 miles) until I was told that the car must be driven the full 5,000 miles with the "factory" oil in order for the engine to be properly broken in (ie. rings seating). One of the guys at the my dealer had me scheduled to change it early until I learned of this from another service representative. Has anyone else been told about this process?
  • bluejettabluejetta Member Posts: 272
I called a little early (4200 miles) to my service manager and she insisted I wait until it was closer to 5,000 and yes, there is special break-in oil, as mentioned in the manual. Also, with the oil and engine technology today, it's really a waste of money to change your oil before 5K miles, especially is you're using synthetic. I decided to wait until 10K miles before changing over to Mobil 1.

And congrats on the new Jetta!!!

My 2001 Jetta GLS 1.8T has its first service schedualed for Thursday. It just turned 4800 miles today and will have 5000 on it by Thursday. My husband has spoiled the car and gotten it used to 5200 rpm shifts....which it really likes. He loves driving the car and gets a silly grin on his face everytime he drives it. I definatly have no complaints about the car, other than the slow seat heater on the driver's side (that will be addressed on Thursday). I managed to break the glove box door, but it will be covered under warranty. Definatly a cool car and I am very glad I got the 1.8T.

I've had my 01' glx for about 3 weeks and only put 120 miles on it... until last weekend. Went up to Northern Vermont for some late season Snowboarding. What was normally a 3 hour drive took 6 hours! Snow was so deep on the HIGHWAY, that it was brushing against the undercarriage, and the glx made it no problem, back roads, hills and all. I must've passed close to 20 cars AND Sport Ute's (ha!) spun out into snowbanks. God bless Traction Control! Anyways, I've got complete confidence in my glx now. Oh, and I got passed that dreaded break-in period. Got a chance to really push it on some windy roads in Boston (Storrow Drive anyone?) and she stuck like glue. LOVE this car!

Has anyone else been told that VW is putting all of its turbo engines into the Wolfsburg right now, so that if you want the GLS with turbo you have to wait a month or two (if not longer)?
  • amasciaamascia Member Posts: 5
the jetta and storrow are a great combination. it's the best when its late and no one is on the road: your own little mini monaco grand prix.

So, i signed a lease 4 weeks ago, and my car dealer in NJ keeps telling me that they are still waiting for delivery and that he doesn't know what cars to be expected. i call him every day and the secretary will not transfer me to the manager to speak to him.
i have tried everything...yelling, talking nicely, threatening to go to another dealer, etc. i cant' wait any longer and i need advice.

I cannot wait to get my car on storrow drive late at night (traffic on that road is a [non-permissible content removed] during rush hour) That will be some fun!

Last week I purchased a GLS VR6 and the car just purrrrrs! I love it to death!

I drove two WEs the night I drove my GLS VR6 and while others said they could hardly tell a difference, I definitely could...the 1.8T just had that lag compared to the VR6...although I probably would never have noticed if I hadnt' driven the VR6 first...oh well!

I ended up getting a great deal, and cannot tell you how much I love my car!!! I am one happy camper :):)

Pretty much every VW dealer I've spoken to on the West coast, either by phone or e-mail, has stated the only manual 1.8Ts likely to make it to the US are gonna be WE. Pisses me off massively. I've almost given up on this car.
  • verduganverdugan Member Posts: 7
hi hi. I think this quote is a bit high, but want to make sure. What do you think?

Black on black GLX with sports suspension and single DC player. He quoted me $24,750.

    I live in Connecticut.

    Thanks,

Find out the invoice (including destination) on your car and expect to pay no more than $100-200 over it. If he won't go for it...go to the net. E-mail every VW dealer within about 100 miles. Tell them what you want exactly. You'll get a good price. The Internet sales guys work off volume...a salesguy at the dealership on the other hand works off commission and is as trustworthy as a rabid dog that hasn't eaten for a week.

    Hi all,

Gotta question about 5W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil. I am the extremely happy owner of an 01 TDI Jetta. The owners manual calls for 5W-40 motor oil as the oil of preference, or 5W-30 if 5W-40 is unavailable.

I've been able to find 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil everywhere, but I haven't been able to find 5W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil anywhere, except for at the dealer! The dealer wants $8.00/quart!

Has anyone been able to find the 5W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil anywhere? For all you Canadian posters, is 5W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil readily available in Canada since there are more TDI's there? I'd be happy to make a trip across the border to pick a case up for when my TDI comes off of warranty.

BlueLagoon, you mention that you have switched over to Mobil 1. What weight are you running in your 2.0L?

    Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Anyone have any advice on paint protection? Here the VW dealer offers 'Luster Glaze' - which I guess is a double wax or something. For $340!! (incl scotch guard.. woo.)

There's another place in town (the Shine Factory) which does something similar (not wax tho)
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
galactic...Every dealer knows exactly what is coming in and, for the most part
when...every week I get an *Order Production Status Report* showing "open
orders". I can tell when a car is scheduled to be built, when it has been
built, when it is on a ship, and which, at that. When it arrives at Port and it's
status there...It also tells when it is on the Load Line awaiting a transporter.
If you cannot find someone at this dealership who knows exactly where your car
    is...cancel your order and go somewhere else...If you not taken physical possesion;
then you haven't leased anything...And if you have signed a lease there has to be
a VIN, and if the have the VIN; they can locate the whereabouts of it.

verdugan...If this GLX is an Automatic; you are stealing it...if it is a 5 Speed you
are paying less than $1000 over for the same car that the Chairman of VWAG drives!
Check out Edmund's True Market Value, and you will find it is pretty close.

ronin...If you can buy this car for $100-$200 over Invoice then I would suggest that
you buy as many as you can afford, and then, resell them. And as to your *rabid
dog* analogy...that guy that is working on commission is working for a living, or would
you prefer to take him, and his family, in and support them? Or maybe a good ole
fashioned life of crime would suit you better? You are on welfare I presume, because you
do not try to earn a living, or are you just another breed of *rabid dog*?

Picked up our first VW yesterday from a dealership.

We paid 29,275 CAN after taxes. The vehicle included sunroof, upgraded mags, single cd.

I was disappointed at the small paint chips missing at the bottom of the driver's side door. (It appears that when opening the door it rubs on the frame) & some other small chipped areas.

Do VW's chip easier than other cars?

Also, The hinge on the arm rest was broken but fixed as well as the glove compartment box...must be a common complaint!
  • verduganverdugan Member Posts: 7
Thanks for both of your replies. The car is manual. I looked at invoice and MSRP at edmunds.com. My quote is $1,750 over invoice and $829 over Edmund's TVM. (a bit less since the CD player is included).
I think I can do better and today I'm going to see the carsdirect.com dealer. Wish me luck.

Thank you for taking the time to answer.

Hey there. I'm thinking of buying a GLS v6, sport package, heated seats, monsoon. I test drove it a couple of weeks ago and liked it. HOWEVER, I forgot to see if the rear seats fold down to creat space for 'stuff'. If they don't I could have a space problem with that small trunk.

Thanks in advance for your help.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The rear seats in the Jetta do fold down. Also, a roomy trunk has always been a plus point of the Jetta.
  • roninjoutenroninjouten Member Posts: 201
Sorry, I'm not fond of car salespeople as in my experience they don't exactly lie...they omit, they re-direct, they pull all sorts of shenanigans to confound car buyers. And that blasted 4 square sheet!

As for the price, I guess it's good, with one caveat...it lacks the equipment I want: leather. I'm not getting into a vehicle for 7 or more years unless it's exactly as I want it.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I made that mistake two years ago. I got a 1999 Protege DX when I really wanted a top-line ES model. Not even two years later, I traded the car in. Owed $12,000 on it and got $7500 for the trade. But this time, I got exactly what I wanted. Guess that will teach me not to take something just because anymore. :(
  • tjmcgrawtjmcgraw Member Posts: 10
Thanks for the response. I guess I wasn't remembering the trunk correctly from my own observations. I just remembered a negative comment made by some reviewer somewhere... the test driver was probably comparing the trunk space with that of a Buick LeSabre or something.. LOL. Anyway, thanks for the seat info... makes a big difference for me.

I own an Audi A6 2.8q but I wish I had a Jetta too. My advice for the above is have a lawyer
review what you've signed if necessary- but
run don't walk away with your money. VW dealers
are shameless- what you describe leaves no hope
that this dealer is professional or even has manners. Jettas are beautiful little cars- when I see one in a parking lot- I scare the people by staring at the car. Enjoy.
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
Go back again to the TMV Section here...Before I responded I put in the numbers
myself... I would suspect that you need to make sure that you add the $550
Destination Charge as well as $92 FloorPlan Interest Reserve, and $25 Port
Prep. And all of the options including, Full Curtain Side Airbags, Multi
Functional Steering Wheel, the 17"s & suspension...Your present calculation
is not correct...As you may know, there are not many of these units out there,
and if this is the one that you really want, then I think you are getting a pretty fair
shake...Of course, if you want to continue to negotiate this down, then you should,
by all means do that, but do recheck the Edmund's TMV page for your own
benefit...And hard cost on that CD is about $275. Alpine & Nak Dealers mark
all of those Head Units up 100%, so a retail store would charge $550...CC & Best
Buy $375-$400...Hope you get the GLX that you want...
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
You are certainly correct in demanding exactly the car that you want...I would do
the same, and good for you...with a 7 year minimum TimeLine. Having said that,
if you are a poster here...why are you dealing with a Retail SalesRep & the ole
    4 Square???

You need to find an Internet Sales Manager/Fleet Manager to handle your
Locate or order...I *order* cars everyday! The customer who wants something
specific knows that patience is required, and in my experience do not mind
    the wait.
  • tjmcgrawtjmcgraw Member Posts: 10
I read something a few pages back that stated something about a lease/buy incentive that ended at the end of March.. is this true? Should I wait to lease a new Jetta until other deals come out?

For those of you who recently leased a GLS v6...what sort of payments did you end up with (if you don't mind me asking)?
  • verduganverdugan Member Posts: 7
The car doesn't have the 17", only the sport suspension (sorry for confusion). I'll go back and add the side curtain airbags. Thanks. I guess it's standard now, so I need to add it. The destination charge is already included.

Thank you for the CD player info. I'm feeling better going to talk to the next dealer.

Actually, I've sent e-mails to just about every VW dealer within a 150 mile area. I get the same response: "1.8T with leather doesn't seem to exist, so wait until the 2002s, or would you like a WE, it's the same thing?" I'm willing to wait until 2002...but my eye is wandering now as I feel betrayed by VW and their misleading declaration of available products. A used Audi, Bimmer or even a 2002 Sentra Spec-V are now courting me.

Last time I dealt with a 4 square was when my sister was negotiating for her Audi. Never again.

i just "ordered" a silver gls 1.8t 5 speed with leather and luxury, for $21050 not including tax and title. i dealt with the internet manager, for a few weeks, then went in the other night to put down the deposit. it was very straight-forward and he explained every charge. i wanted him to go a little lower, but his price was the lowest i could get from area dealers and he was the *only* one who assured me that he could get the exact car i wanted. that was more important to me than shopping for the best deal but not getting the car i've been drooling over for 6 months. i'll let you know how it all comes together in 6 weeks when the car is supposed to be delivered.
  • tjmcgrawtjmcgraw Member Posts: 10
And he said no way I'm going to locate the car I want... wait until 2002's come out. Just wanted to know what you guys and girls thought. Here's what I'm looking for:

    GLS v6 (non-leather seats)
    Cold weather package
    Sport package
Monsoon sound (I can live without this)

Is this so unreasonable at this point?

HI, I am trying to buy a Jetta GLS 1.8T - I have been researching this EDMUNDS AND the Invoice is $18,164 and MSRP is $19,950. At the dealership (and even a guy that called me from Autobytel) is telling me that these go for 22k I/I leather and 23k with leather. I told him about what I found on the Edmunds sight and they both told me "well, unfortunately what you see on the interned is no accurate". Can someone please help me determine what I really should be paying?
    Thanks so much

I have not changed over to synthetic yet. When I do (10K miles), I'll be buying Mobil 1 at my local Wal-Mart and then take it in to the dealer for them to change, as suggested by the service manager.

Here is a TSB, dated Feb 1999 regarding synthetic oil usage with the TDI. In a nutshell it says that 5W-30 is just fine. http://tech.vw.com/pdf/v179901.PDF

If I am not mistaken the Stock System & CD Components are Matsushita...
They Manufacture under a variety of different brand labels...Panasonic, etc.

The Monsoon System, I believe, is a Delco/Bose variant...and the head unit
is tweeked with an added DSP(Digital Signal Processor).
