Anyway, back on topic ---> I have cloth seats in my Jetta and both my wife and I love it. She does have some back problems, but she has a much better time of long drives in the Jetta than she did in our 1991 Accord. I find the seats very comfortable, but when we went for our first long drive I did have problems...
Then I discovered the telescoping steering wheel!!! Man, what a difference! For awhile I was thinking what a huge mistake I made getting this car and I wanted our Accord back as I could not get comfortable no matter what I did.
Now though, it's such a dream to drive...

I am seriously looking at getting a Jetta. What are the relative pros and cons of
the 1.8T v. the TDI. I've already driven the 2.0 and the 1.8t but not yet the TDI.
Thanks for the help!
I'm sure the WRX will hold its value well, but remember you are paying $5,000 extra (25%) for the WRX.
I have owned both engines. I had a '98 Jetta TDI and now drive a '00 Passat with the 1.8t.
If the Passat had a diesel option available here in the U.S. I would be driving one.
Unfortunately I outgrew the size of the Jetta and moved to the Passat. (I did not personally outgrow it, my family did!)
As stated above, these are very different engines. The 1.8t has good power and will be a lot more quick than the TDI. However, the TDI makes a great deal of torque in the low rev range so it has very good acceleration, when compared to the 2.0 gas engine.
It is really a decision between power and speed versus fantastic fuel mileage.
The TDI option is more costly on the sticker price. My rough calculations during my buying experience was that you will need to drive the TDI approximately 50,000 miles before the savings in fuel offsets the added expense at purchase time for the car. So, how long you plan to own the car now comes into play.
One benefit of the TDI is that the diesel has no ignition system so you do not have any tune-ups to worry about. Of course, you have the reputed long term, high mileage benefit of the diesel.
Some people worry about the winter starting habits of the diesel, this will depend on were you live. I never had any problems, even on below zero Missouri winter nights. To me, that is a non-issue.
I would recommend an extended test drive of each. I really like the 1.8t engine in my Passat. It makes good power and is very smooth. On the other side, I have had good luck with both a VW diesel and a Mercedes diesel and would get one again.
Drive them both, see what you like. Again, your particular situation and driving miles may make the decision easier one way or the other.
As for a changer, you need to get a Panasonic or Alpine changer. There's information on my website.

Now you will know what I mean about the Jetta Perma-Smile. And also, all those goofy Jetta commercials will now make perfect sense.
Congratulations to flaca and scrible.
Have fun and drive it like ya stole it!!! j/k (Be sure and read the manual about the break-in period).

Galactic Blue, White or Black? I like all these colors and would probably get beige interior. I'm leaning towards white. I've never owned a black car but the black Wolfburg looks really cool to me. Like I said it may sound dumb but I just can't decide. Since I'm buying I want to be happy with my choice! What color are you most happy with???
Not only are they a PITA to keep clean, but they are just butt-nasty hot in any sun over 75-degrees or so.
The black and galactic look awesome when they are clean, but they are only clean for an hour or so until they are covered with grimy dust. Not to mention that the dark color amplifies any and all surface scratches or swirls.
Other than that, I'd definitely get the Galactic Blue. ;-)

To: Jamessa4 - My deal was very similar to blackjetta's. Anything in that range is reasonable.

I'm torn between the mileage advantage of the Jetta GLS 1.9 TDI and the power of the GLS 1.8 Turbo.
Can anyone share their experience or opinion on either. The prices seem equal, not sure which is in higher demand...
Thanks!
If you drive highway, the TDI is the way to go. If it is city stop-and-go, get the 1.8T so you can lane change and get the jump at stoplights. I cannot predict resale value, but I think the 1.8T will be the next fad car to be hopped up like they try to do with Honda Civics and Accords. Likewise, the TDI will be hot in a gas price war.
Tough choice. I am overjoyed with my TDI.
when you say $0 down, how much did you pay for an inception fee?
i just signed on the exact same car in NJ also.

Thanks to everyone for the advice on the Jetta purchase. I closed the following deal at an awesome dealership in Northern: Virginia
$20665 Inv.
2001 Wolfsburg 1.8T (monsoon,sunrf, heated pkg,)
$8665 Trade-in 1997 Jetta GL
This website helped alot - and also was able to bargain because I did not orignally want the monsoon & heated pkg - wasn't willing to pay for it. Dealer only had 1 in Galactic blu - and they were itching to sell last night!!!
I pick it up tonight and then time to trail-blaze!!!
I test drove one of the rare SILVER W/ GRAY INTERIOR JETTA TDI's up an Congressional VW in Rockville MD yesterday.
Awesome car - but they are not budging on the price there and giving the lowest ball trade-in appraisals.
I left there & bought my Wolfsburg at Farrish in Manassas VA!!!
Thanks
I just did the deal at the Jersey City dealership. I am paying $1,900 (fees and 1st month) at $300/month.
I guess that means i am paying $76.00 more than you are in the end.
i wasn't sure if i did a good job negotiating since i;m a girl, so i guess i didn't get ripped off.

This is the best car I have ever owned. I am getting 30-34 mpg. I already have 2700 miles in 4 weeks, This is a bit excessive, normally I average about 1200 a month. I guess this car is just too much fun to drive.

Manuals...There is a seperate booklet for the
Sound System...look at inside of booklet cover.
If you did not get all of the books you will need
to go to your local dealer...They will have to pull the head unit and get the serial number from it and run it through the computer to get the code.
Also a good time to meet the service advisor.
She/He will will also be able to bring you up to date on the Service History of your Jetta... And the Parts Dept. can order the owner's manuals for you too...
Anyone know about how much an extended warranty runs on these cars?
What about a kit for lowering the VR6...it's too high on those 17s.
