Heh! I have both a 1998 Ranger and a 2001 Jetta!!! I love the Ranger, but the seats suck. I'd love to get them re-done with better padding.

Anyway, back on topic ---> I have cloth seats in my Jetta and both my wife and I love it. She does have some back problems, but she has a much better time of long drives in the Jetta than she did in our 1991 Accord. I find the seats very comfortable, but when we went for our first long drive I did have problems...

Then I discovered the telescoping steering wheel!!! Man, what a difference! For awhile I was thinking what a huge mistake I made getting this car and I wanted our Accord back as I could not get comfortable no matter what I did.

Now though, it's such a dream to drive...

You should try the Dirt Devil. That does a great job on my car. It gets things up a regular vac can't.

I posted this earlier and never got a response. I'm taking another stab. Thanks!!!

I am seriously looking at getting a Jetta. What are the relative pros and cons of
the 1.8T v. the TDI. I've already driven the 2.0 and the 1.8t but not yet the TDI.
    Thanks for the help!
  • tazerelitazereli Member Posts: 241
These motors are rather different. One is a diesel and one is a gas motor. The TDI will feel rather sluggish compared to the 1.8T. It comes down to would you sacrifice fuel efficiency for speed or sacrifice speed for fuel efficiency? The choice is yours. It really depends on your perogitive. May I make one suggestion? Check out the Subaru WRX when it debuts in 6 days. You may find it is well worth your trouble and the extra cash over the Jetta. You get the all weather security of AWD and the handling advantages too. The looks are somthing of an aquired taste but IMHO it looks great and is nothing like the neon (mellis' post 995) and will hold its value very well when compared to the Jetta (mellis' post 995) Remember the Day of Reckoning comes in 6 days with the debut of the WRX!!!! Happy rallying

I have a 2000 jetta with the monsoon. has anyone added a changer themselves. I heard that you have to have the radio programmed by the dealer. is that accurate? any help is appreciated. thanks.
  • mellismellis Member Posts: 150
IMHO (and everyone else I asked) the WRX front end and headlights look exactly like a Neon!

I'm sure the WRX will hold its value well, but remember you are paying $5,000 extra (25%) for the WRX.

I will try to offer some input without adding a plug for a Subaru.
I have owned both engines. I had a '98 Jetta TDI and now drive a '00 Passat with the 1.8t.
If the Passat had a diesel option available here in the U.S. I would be driving one.
Unfortunately I outgrew the size of the Jetta and moved to the Passat. (I did not personally outgrow it, my family did!)
As stated above, these are very different engines. The 1.8t has good power and will be a lot more quick than the TDI. However, the TDI makes a great deal of torque in the low rev range so it has very good acceleration, when compared to the 2.0 gas engine.
It is really a decision between power and speed versus fantastic fuel mileage.
The TDI option is more costly on the sticker price. My rough calculations during my buying experience was that you will need to drive the TDI approximately 50,000 miles before the savings in fuel offsets the added expense at purchase time for the car. So, how long you plan to own the car now comes into play.
One benefit of the TDI is that the diesel has no ignition system so you do not have any tune-ups to worry about. Of course, you have the reputed long term, high mileage benefit of the diesel.
Some people worry about the winter starting habits of the diesel, this will depend on were you live. I never had any problems, even on below zero Missouri winter nights. To me, that is a non-issue.
I would recommend an extended test drive of each. I really like the 1.8t engine in my Passat. It makes good power and is very smooth. On the other side, I have had good luck with both a VW diesel and a Mercedes diesel and would get one again.
Drive them both, see what you like. Again, your particular situation and driving miles may make the decision easier one way or the other.

Not that hard. I have not heard of very many people having to get the dealer to re-program the head unit for the changer.

As for a changer, you need to get a Panasonic or Alpine changer. There's information on my website.

OK, I never got a response in the "aftermarket" section of the Town Hall so I'm hoping someone can help me here. Will an aftermarket CD changed (probably the Panasonic) work with the steering wheel radio controls on a 2001 Jetta GLX? Any help would be appreciated!

I was hoping someone would have that answer for ya. So, the best place(s) to find that out would be the audio forum at VWVortex, or to ask the people at crutchfield.com. My guess would be yes, but check with those sites. Someone there will know.

Well, I am the proud owner of a Silver Jetta with Gray Leather. Opted for the 2.0 since the turbo was going to be pain to get. In a way the 2.0 works just right for me. It feels peppy. I love it already. If anyone is in the South Florida area wanting to buy a VW - I recommed Gunther VW in Ft. Lauderdale. They were really great and no pressure at all. Our salesman was Mike Neal and he was a sweetheart. Now my hubby wants a New Passat. Here we go again.

New poster/reader here. I'm moving to LA and thinking about leasing a new Jetta (not sure which model yet). What have you guys been getting for lease rates on these cars? Thanks for the info!
  • blackjetta18t1blackjetta18t1 Member Posts: 278
I just leased a 2001 VW Jetta GLS in NJ, with auto trans, luxury package, leather package, in dash cd, 2.0 engine, for 39 months, 0 down, 12K miles per year, for 316 a month. Just for the hell of it, I talked to a delaer in Cali to see what the cost is there, and they quoted same exact car for about 400 a month, ouch!

I know this is may sound like a trivial problem but I can't decide what color Wolfsburg to buy!
Galactic Blue, White or Black? I like all these colors and would probably get beige interior. I'm leaning towards white. I've never owned a black car but the black Wolfburg looks really cool to me. Like I said it may sound dumb but I just can't decide. Since I'm buying I want to be happy with my choice! What color are you most happy with???
  • balticjetta18tbalticjetta18t Member Posts: 146
Personally I think a Galactic Blue with your Beige interior would be the most colorful, exotic combo with the limited choices Wolfies come with. On VW.com you can see more info on Wolfies, specs, colors etc. Have Fun in your quest !
  • bluejettabluejetta Member Posts: 272
If I was choosing a new WE, with their severely limited color choices :(, I'd definitely go with white. Hands down, No questions. No reconsiderations. I traded in a cobalt blue Accord on my Jetta, and I will never EVER buy another dark colored car.

Not only are they a PITA to keep clean, but they are just butt-nasty hot in any sun over 75-degrees or so.

The black and galactic look awesome when they are clean, but they are only clean for an hour or so until they are covered with grimy dust. Not to mention that the dark color amplifies any and all surface scratches or swirls.

Other than that, I'd definitely get the Galactic Blue. ;-)

I would never buy a dark colored color again. I had a dark green camry that looked awful all the time. Stick with white. Too bad the Wolfie doesn't come in silver. To me that's the best color!
To: Jamessa4 - My deal was very similar to blackjetta's. Anything in that range is reasonable.
  • jetta143jetta143 Member Posts: 16
is a pain to keep clean! I'm the kind of person that thinks a dirty car is blasphemy, so i try very hard to keep it clean, but to no avail. Pollen, dust, dirt and everything else (not to mention bird droppings) seem to be attracted to my car. But would i change anything? nope. I think the blue is a Beautiful color, but it just takes a little TLC. it's an even trade.

    Hey,

I'm torn between the mileage advantage of the Jetta GLS 1.9 TDI and the power of the GLS 1.8 Turbo.

Can anyone share their experience or opinion on either. The prices seem equal, not sure which is in higher demand...

    Thanks!
  • k_h_bk_h_b Member Posts: 54
If you don't care about acceleration get the TDI. If you like to cruise at high speeds or drive fast Like I do , i'd get the 1.8T. I got 340 miles out of 12 gallons crusing at 90 on I-94 this past sunday, thing can just go no matter at what speed or gear. TDI's another 20 MPG to that, but louder, smellier, worse acceleration. Depends what you wanna use it for.
  • wntajettawntajetta Member Posts: 12
I've just been quoted a price of 20,500 for the WE with moonroof and single CD player. Is this a fair price? How realistic is it to buy one for 20,000?
  • lbihnlbihn Member Posts: 13
As a TDI owner, the car has no problem going 110 mph, and is rock-solid at this speed. If you get on it, acceleration is adequate with a manual, and the car can be chipped out for $400 to make it comparable to the 1.8T. I have not done this (yet!). If you can afford to wait a year, I think the hi-powered euro-diesels might be brought over to the US (do some websearch on the new 2002 Audi A4 or Passat, which I think offer this.) One more gas crunch near $2/gallon ought to do it.
If you drive highway, the TDI is the way to go. If it is city stop-and-go, get the 1.8T so you can lane change and get the jump at stoplights. I cannot predict resale value, but I think the 1.8T will be the next fad car to be hopped up like they try to do with Honda Civics and Accords. Likewise, the TDI will be hot in a gas price war.
Tough choice. I am overjoyed with my TDI.

    Hey-

Thanks to everyone for the advice on the Jetta purchase. I closed the following deal at an awesome dealership in Northern: Virginia

    $20665 Inv.
    2001 Wolfsburg 1.8T (monsoon,sunrf, heated pkg,)

    $8665 Trade-in 1997 Jetta GL

This website helped alot - and also was able to bargain because I did not orignally want the monsoon & heated pkg - wasn't willing to pay for it. Dealer only had 1 in Galactic blu - and they were itching to sell last night!!!

I pick it up tonight and then time to trail-blaze!!!
  • seanblueseanblue Member Posts: 17
    FYI-

I test drove one of the rare SILVER W/ GRAY INTERIOR JETTA TDI's up an Congressional VW in Rockville MD yesterday.

Awesome car - but they are not budging on the price there and giving the lowest ball trade-in appraisals.

I left there & bought my Wolfsburg at Farrish in Manassas VA!!!

Any one know the cost and value (is it worth it) of the VW extended warranties?

    Thanks
  • blackjetta18t1blackjetta18t1 Member Posts: 278
by 0 down i mean 0 out of pocket, but i gace 1200 at signing, whihc is bank fees, registration, first months, etc, where did u get your car? did you lease it, or buy it and if you leased it, what kinda payments are you giving?
  • flacaflaca Member Posts: 168
I opted for the extended warranty just for peace of mind. I usually don't get them. But this is my first VW and I don't want to take any chances. For a 39 month lease my cost was $390. - so about $10.00 a month.
  • galacticjettagalacticjetta Member Posts: 3
    BlackJetta18t1,
I just did the deal at the Jersey City dealership. I am paying $1,900 (fees and 1st month) at $300/month.
I guess that means i am paying $76.00 more than you are in the end.
    i wasn't sure if i did a good job negotiating since i;m a girl, so i guess i didn't get ripped off.

TDI comes at a price. Great mileage has to be balanced against horrendously expensive (at least up north) dealer timing belt changes that are every 40k for the automatic. Also, an expensive 20k fuel system servicing, although the first one is free under warranty. Filters cost more too. Then again, the 1.8 needs premium fuel. Tough choice.

I bought my 2001 1.8T about 4 weeks ago on a ZERO down lease and payments are $323 a month. I did have to pay about $450 for plates and 1 months payment. I paid about $20380.

This is the best car I have ever owned. I am getting 30-34 mpg. I already have 2700 miles in 4 weeks, This is a bit excessive, normally I average about 1200 a month. I guess this car is just too much fun to drive.
  • blackjetta18t1blackjetta18t1 Member Posts: 278
how long are your lease terms? if its for 36/39 months, then its very good, even though jettas have high lease payments to begin with. When I first started negotiating, the original price given was 345, then i brought it to 330, then to $316.89, 39 months, 0 down, 1200 at signing, 12K miles per year

I needed 14-15k miles a year and decided to buy outright even though I have leased Mercurys and Fords since 1992. My GLS 1.8t, Leather with Multi Function wheel, monsoon, sidecurtains, and LuxSport negotiated price was 21885. Sticker was 23275. I paid the tax and tag in cash and another 1700 cash down to finance 20,200 @6.9% for 60 months for 400 even... Just cut my first payment check today now 59 left to go... There is some 5.9% money for 60 months thru VW credit also now, FYI for other buyers, but N/A for the wolfies...

Blew the radio fuse on Jetta 96. Replaced the fuse. Radio is in safe mode. Bought car used. No manual. How do I reset radio from safe mode to normal? Tried disconnecting battery and locking/unlocking car but nothing works. Thx, msfiggy
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
You should find the Radio Code with the Owner's
Manuals...There is a seperate booklet for the
Sound System...look at inside of booklet cover.

If you did not get all of the books you will need
to go to your local dealer...They will have to pull the head unit and get the serial number from it and run it through the computer to get the code.

Also a good time to meet the service advisor.
She/He will will also be able to bring you up to date on the Service History of your Jetta... And the Parts Dept. can order the owner's manuals for you too...

Last night I test drove the GLX with a 5 speed and the 17 inchers. Nice. Unfortunately, the steering felt over-boosted and I have since discovered the dealer's salesman was less than honest. He claimed the difference between the GLS as I wanted it and the GLX is only about $500. Why lie if one can check prices online? The GLX with 17s is 25850 MSRP and the GLS (what I was looking for) with the VR6, leather package and sport package is $23825. That's $2000 for wood trim, auto windshield wipers and power seats!!!

Anyone know about how much an extended warranty runs on these cars?

What about a kit for lowering the VR6...it's too high on those 17s.

I have a 2000 GLS VR6 Jetta. I love it, but I have one odd problem. The material used to cover the emergency brake is peeling. Has anyone else had this problem?
  • flacaflaca Member Posts: 168
I paid $390.oo for the extended Warranty on a 39-month lease. So it runs for about $10.00 a month.

in my 2001 black jetta gls 2.0, black leather multi funtion steering wheel(i love this)sunnroof, 15" alloys, the back rear door speakers are really sticky and the lower part of the door around the speakers has these big sticky residue on it, like they peeled off tape or something, whats the best way to remove all that crap, also, that area on my rear elft door, when u push it moves quite a bit while the opposite door doesnt, also, there is a rattle from the rear elft dor, could those two problems be related?

I have owned my 2001 Jetta GLS 1.8T for about 5 weeks and last week it started having this strange problem. I went outside to start it and let it warm up and all I got when I turned the key was *click*. We jump started it and it seemed fine. The car had sat for about 2 days and the outside temperature was slightly below zero. Nothing was left on. From the point on the battery has seemed weak, I don't trust the car at all. I imagine when I do drive it again in a couple days the battery will be dead again. Just seems strange that the battery suddenly went dead for no reason. Anyone else having this problem?
