qote-Are you implying that smarter people buy the Jetta? Just extremely curious.
BTW, it was a Jetta poster (flaca, post #2684)who incited the Protege owner's to come over here :
    -end quote.

That post is from the Jetta topic, and not the Protege topic. I believe that a Protege fan cross posted #2684 over into the Protege topic to incite the Protege fans to come into the Jetta topic. The Protege is a good car, but it is not a Jetta and this is a Jetta discussion. Please have the courtesey to discuss Jetta's here.
My post #2703 was in response to the "facts" stated by panamaltd2 in post #2702.
And finally, no I am not implying that Jetta owners have higher intelligence, I am implying that the majority of Jetta owners do not choose between Protege and Jetta because the two cars appeal to different audiences.

And that's the last word on this issue.

Further posts persisting in this argument will be removed. I gave you an alternative to continue this conversation. Please give that a try if you have more to say. Otherwise, you can take it off-line - it does not belong in this discussion.

new for 2002 and what it will have is 201 HP VR6, 6 speed manual only, sport suspension, 17" wheels, sport interior (like the Wolfsburg), black, silver, blue and red as color choices, and options of sunroof pkg., leather pkg., monsoon, and cold weather pkg.. I think I would give up my TDI for this one.

...I'm very interested. I hear it's coming out in December and I've been holding off on buying a new car until I test drive it. Any websites with info on this car? Any clues on pricing?
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
The VR6 with 201 HP and 5 speed tiptronic (no manual available) should be available now or very soon. The GLI with 6 speed is going into production around February and will show up April/May. Long time to wait. Oh well, at least there will now be a Jetta that is equal to the GTI.

Perhaps blueguy would even like it, as long as it does not rattle.

For the new 24V Jetta, only Tip pricing is available, but it should give us a general idea. Pricing is as follows:

    $26,825

    options:
    17" Alloy wheels and Tires $600 ($400)
    Side Curtain protection $220 (standard)
    Climatronic $540 ($350)

If you want more info, go to http://www.vwvortex.com then go to the forums section. People post topics of all kinds on this site.
  • bluewolfbluewolf Member Posts: 101
I'm a VW fan, but sorry, $26,825 for the 24V VR6 is a joke. I'll do without Tiptronic/climatronic/sunroof, but I do want 6-spd, Monsoon, leather and cold pkg in a GTI hatchback for my next car.

But if the new VR6 GTI with leather & 6 spd is anywhere near $26k, I'll be looking at an A4, Saab 9-3, or Subaru WRX.

Anyone know if VW is supposed to rotate the tires of the Jetta on the 5000 mile visit? I noted when I got my car back that this had not been done and thought it curious - especially as I have almost zero tread left on the front tires.

Yes, I could look in my manual if I knew where the manual might be and if I weren't at work. Just hoping someone knows off the top of his head.

    Thanks.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
no tire rotatation at 5k during a VW service. I recommend it every 7500 miles, personally. Of course, VW wants to do a service every 5k, so either you pay for it at 5k, or get it at 10k. Now, if you have a 2002, VW does not pay for service anymore...so you pay for it anytime. :)

I read a review from "kara" dated 11/5/01 in which she describes a blown window motor problem related to the factory alarm. Has anyone experienced this problem also? I am now on my second blown window motor for my 97 Jetta GLS.

I would like to find out how "kare" found this out.

Just filled my third tank and can't believe the mileage I'm getting. Love the car however a few things are troubling. Squeaks from the windows and the seats make a "thunking" noise when braking. Anyone else with this type of problem?

Last week, I was upset by a post in this discussion. I now realize, that particular post was just one persons opinion. It was posted as part of a discussion between two Edmund Town Hall members, and I did not need to over react like, I did. I have deleted, my off topic posts. However, that does not make it "right". I apologize to anyone, I offended. Again, my bad.

I realize these cars are leaps and bounds nicer (prettier, faster, etc.) than they were a few years ago, but I still think that kind of money for a small VW is ridiculous. You can *almost* buy a 325i for that.
  • bluewolfbluewolf Member Posts: 101
it's likely your seat frame, have your dealer check it out, pretty common complaint. Some are defective from the factory. Good luck!
  • arjay1arjay1 Member Posts: 172
You have worn your tires bald in the front in only 5,000 miles? Come on, is that true?
If it is, you have no reason to complain about squeaks in your Jetta. If someone is driving a car hard enough to wear out a set of tires in 5,000 miles then the car has a right to earn a few squeaks.
I have a friend with an Acura NSX and he can get 10,000 miles from a set of tires and those things are as soft as a sponge. The tires on my Passat have 26,000 miles on them with almost no wear showing.
I must have misread your post about the 5,000 miles and worn out tires. Please set me straight!

I think blueguy has more than 5K miles on his Jetta. So far my Mich MXV4s are doing very well at 17K - plenty of tread. If you're smooth with the clutch and gas, you can still get a good take-off in the Jetta without spinning the wheels.

I paid for the extra rotation at 5k and 15k - think it's well worth it.
  • fischdafischda Member Posts: 272
A wierd story - a hit a pedestrian with my Jetta!! Well, he hit me...sort of.

I was at a stop sign waiting to turn left. Checked my left, then right, back left and went. I was turning onto a four-lane road and all of the sudden there's a man getting big in my windshield off my right front fender. I hit the brakes hard and the Jet stops dead! Great brakes on this car! His momentum takes him into my car and his hip bends the side mirror in.

I get out and check him over, push my mirror back into position and swipe some crumbs off my hood, from the cake pan he was holding that went flying. Luckily, he was unhurt and so was my car! I apologized for hitting him, and he apologized for crossing without a cross walk or looking my way...phew!

I must admit, on the way home I was itching to get out and inspect my paint for sratches - I was less concerned about the poor guy that had to go home and change his pants...

I'm at 6100 miles so far. The front tires look like they have about 3-4k miles left on them. And no I never squeal away from lights or stops, but I do take corners hard and most often turn off the intrusive ASR.

I am NOT complaining about my tires losing tread quickly. These things happen. I just have to switch the front and back tires prior to the 10k service. I'd like to get at least 15k out of this set. LOL Boy am I glad I got the BBS rims and thus the cheaper 16 inchers.

BTW, nothing I do with the car is out of the ordinary, IMHO. I push every vehicle exactly the same way. And those creaks and rattles started within the first 5 weeks of ownership.
  • arjay1arjay1 Member Posts: 172
I guess that is your definition of "out of the ordinary" but not mine. I can't imagine running the front tires bald in 7,000 or 8,000 miles without absolutely abusing the car. Those are not even high performance tires that came on the Jetta. If you had performance tires you would be lucky to get 3,000 to 4,000 with that type of driving.
You cannot wear them that fast without spinning them a lot. The ASR system is only intrusive if you are spinning the tires, whether around a turn or from a stop.
I am glad the tire wear does not bother you and I am not flaming you at all. I am glad to see someone who really is using their Jetta hard and enjoying it. However, that kind of use has to cause excessive stress on the car and I would think premature rattles.

Shopping around for a new car I read that the Jetta is not very reliable. CReports will not recommend then at all.
    Any feedback out there?
Currently looking at the Sentra and Elantra.
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
If you want reliable, go buy a Toyota or a Honda.

I bought my Jetta because of the way it drives, and because I was tired of my very reliable, very boring Honda. I took a bit of reassurance from the new 4/50k warranty on the Jetta as well.

I have 2750 miles on my Jetta and not a single problem. I'm hoping I got one of the good ones. :^)

If you're looking for ultimate reliablility, this isn't the car for you. But if you want some fun and are willing to risk reliability a bit, then you might want to try it.

    Good luck with your shopping.

CR now recommends the Jetta. Its reliability rating has improved to average.

I installed the Panasonic Changer yesterday and it looks great, totally OEM, however it does nto work. I have the adapter and all but there is no power going to it. The magazine will not eject even with the fail safe. The headunit reads nothing and sends no power. I've talked to some people and they don't know what it is, Crutchfield says its either a broken changer, or the car needs to be programmed, so I call the dealership and they say they have no idea what I am talking about and do not program them. I called another dealer and they said they have never heard anyone install a Panasonic changer but they'll try to program it for 32 bucks. One guy said if no power is going to it, then that means either the changer is broken or the wires are messed up, what do I do??
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
Have you tried posting your problem to the VWVortex boards? There are lots of people there who do aftermarket stuff. They might be able to help.

    Good Luck.

2100 miles on my 2002 Jetta 1.8T GLS already (3 weeks old this coming Saturday) and still loving it! I have a little rattle in the passenger's side door, but it wasn't found when I took the car for service on Tuesday. I will just have to take it back and drive it with them. No problem though, the rattle is only when the car is ice cold and without the radio on. Once the Monsoon is on, I can't hear a thing. :)

About the service: I went to Valley Motors in Hunt Valley, Md. They washed and vaccumed my car, and it looked great when I picked it up. Very good service. They also sell/service Audi and Porsche though, so this was expected when I went in. And they didn't move my driver's seat either, because I asked them not to. Very good. :)

Monsoon: It still comes with the single CD player if you get it optional. My 2002 has that option, and it's one of the best radios I have ever driven with.

"Stolen" car: My best friend stayed at my house on Tuesday night. I get up to go out on Wednesday, and notice the keys to his 1997 Sentra in the place of my 2002 Jetta's keys on the hook. He took my darn car! :) He is totally in love with it and wants to drive all the time when we hang out. :) I told him to get his own, and he's really thinking hard about it too. :)

I just got a dark green jetta 5 speed 1.8T w/sport luxury and leather. I love it!! No problems, so far, but I've only driven 40 miles.... ( :
  • bluewolfbluewolf Member Posts: 101
Vocus: Yes, Monsoon is good for covering up any small rattles ;) and it's a good radio too!
Glad you're diggin' your dub. I think once people take a spin in a 1.8T, they're likely to be hooked, it's a fun lil' car, no doubt!

Sarah: Nice ride! Did you buy it new or used? Sounds completely loaded which is always nice!
    Enjoy!
  • sarah233sarah233 Member Posts: 161
It's brand spankin' new. I really wanted dark blue, but they only had it in auto, which I drove and didn't like as well. so, I got green. I think it'll grow on me. It's so fun to drive! I think I agree with some of the other posters about the stereo though (monsoon.) I like the stock stereo in my civic better...
  • archenarchen Member Posts: 3
I had the exact same problem when I installed a panasonic changer in my 2002 gls jetta about 3 weeks ago. One web site that sells the adapter said that if you hook everything up and it doesn't work then the dealer needs to program the radio for the cost of an hours labor. My VW dealer claimed to know nothing about "programing the radio" and refused to touch it because they had had a diagnostic machine blow up in the past by trying to test an after market changer. I said "how about hooking up a VW changer to test the connections and if everything is OK then I'll rehook up my changer myself later." They agreed to do this for $80. After two long hours they came back and said everything works fine and charged me $91. Then the service manager said the problem turned out to be some faulty wires in the head unit that had to be replaced. I just about blew my head unit. (in thoughts only) I want to try to maintain a good relationship with the service guys. I got the feeling they were giving me the evil eye for not buying the changer from them. I hope this helps.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The 1.8T hooked me from the test drive. I hadn't even planned on buying a new car, since I had just gotten one 8 months ago. :) I drove the GLS 1.8T with the auto and I couldn't leave without the car. I originally wanted Blue Lagoon with cloth, automatic, and Luxury Pkg. I didn't feel like waiting to have the CD player in or waiting for them to locate the car, so I took a cool white Sport/Luxury one from the lot with leather and Monsoon. I LOVE IT! Have 2200 miles in only 3 weeks. I just can't stay out of it. :)
  • bluewolfbluewolf Member Posts: 101
Cool white is awesome, especially here in the desert heat. I plan on getting the wife a Golf TDI in white next...
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
My last car (a 2001 Protege) was black, and it was hell to keep clean. It was also so hot inside, I had to get the windows tinted. I vowed then and there never to get another black car again.

I am trying to find a last-generation gently used Jetta or Golf for my dad to drive. He is just starting to drive, and he likes my car alot. I might get lucky and find another one like mine for a cheap price. If I do, then we will be a 2 Jetta family. :)

I've got a black jetta withblack leather, o boy does it get hot, and dirty so fast...plus I tok my car to a car wash twice in the very beginning that I got my car because it was February and way to cold to wash it myself, and they messed up my paint so much..swirl marks, scratches galour...the scratches are very annoying, VW's paint is very soft, I accidentaly swiped the hood with my hand gently and it left claw marks from my nails, and I had just cut them to....lol
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
You said your car was leased right? You better damn site get those scratches off that car before the lease ends, or you will be charged for them.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
Don't worry about it. I've got friends who've returned cars to VW with tons of body work, scratches, mistmatched paint, etc...no charge from VW. Cosmetic flaws are to be expected after a 3 year lease. Don't sweat it.
  • blackjetta18t1blackjetta18t1 Member Posts: 278
yea, there are some fine scrathes and swirl marks, but maybe 2-3 noticable ones..anyone i got a good two years to go

I have been the owner of a Silver 2002 Jetta 1.8 Turbo for around 4 weeks, and already put 2400km on it. The fuel consumption is pretty good, mixture driving of city and highway requires 8.0 litre per 100 km, (I am a new 5-speed manual shift driver), for such great performance I am pretty happy with that.

The feeling of driving on 1.8T Jetta is super, last Friday kicked [non-permissible content removed] of a BMW 328 @ 170km on the highway... This is in Quebec anyway.

I have a '97 Jetta with 80K and reliability starting going down hill around 60K. AC occasionally doesn't work but if you jiggle the key in the ignition it will kick it on. Currently 3 of the 4 electric windows don't work. VW wants about $400 a window to fix. That is BS and I just want to get rid of the car. Will not buy Jetta again.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Jetta reliability has improved with the redesign of the 1999.5 model, and even more so now in 2000 and 2001. Consumer Reports upgraded the Jetta to "average" for reliability this year actually. The older ones weren't very reliable though.

Thanks to all for the incite and experience of this message board. Long time reader, and a first timer posting a message. I have a 97 Jetta GT with 128,000 miles. No major problems except the cruise control. It is very sporadic, and lately not working at all. I have tried pulling the fuse (the brown one) out and cleaned it. Worked for a day and then stopped. Anyone have any suggestions or is this best fixed at the dealer?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I would say go to the dealer, but I am not very technical when it comes to a car either. If it's not the fuse, it could be something else in the actuator or something like that. Have the dealer check it out if you use it often enough.

I have owned my Tulley(NH) 2000 Jetta for approx. 2 yr/48,000 highway miles. Here are the problems I have experienced...

    * The car burns oil rapidly between oil changes and requires maintenance
    * My drivers side AND passenger side window fell into the door and after the secretary told me there was nothing they could do (mind you, it was raining and I had a 1 hr commute home) I had the manager help, if you call it that...I was charged $250.
    * The sunroof broke at 30,000 miles(its $85 just for VW to look at it)
    * The Mass Airflow Sensor needed replacement at 40,000 miles ($550)
    * There is a rattling in the passenger side speaker (dealer can’t figure it out but charges for checking)
    * The dash board lights sometimes don’t come on

Please note that all of these problems are not due to misuse of the car...at one time I ran a car detailing business and I treat the car very, very well and have been disheartened by its problems.

VW service is horrible!! and the workers are very unsypathethic to any problems. Since its not one problem that recurs over and over I dont qualify for the lemon-law; a loophole if you ask me.

I will never buy a VW again.
Feel free to ask me any questions… jeffebay2000@yahoo.com

has anyone driven both the manual and tiptronic transmissions on the 1.8T? I test drove both while deciding which car to buy, and I prefer the manual....the tiptronic is kinda cool, but just not as satisfying a drive.
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
Well, then you should buy a manual.

I drive through Seattle traffic everyday, so the Tip is a nice compromise for me. :^)
  • sarah233sarah233 Member Posts: 161
that's exactly what i did....just was curious what people who've driven both thought. L.A. traffic is no match for me and my 5 speed. ( : Luckily I don't have much of a commute so I can get away with it.

After reading about the A4's CVT, I gotta say that sounds pretty darn nice. Still, I think I'd miss the clutch on my Jetta.

BTW, I spied a 2002 A4 twice today. It was the same woman and car, once on the drive into work this morning and once on the drive home tonight. Regardless of her blatant stalking (LOL), she's got one smooth looking ride. Very nice job those kids in Germany did making the new A4. Almost makes me willing to buy another VW. Almost. Well, maybe an S4. :)

My son has a 97 Jetta 5 speed. It has a noticeable whine in 5th gear. The dealer says it is nothing because they don't want to honor an extended warranty. My mechanic put the car on a lift and heard the noise in 5th gear. He thinks its a transmission problem. Is this a common problem? Does anyone have a site address for recall notices or technical service bulletins? Does anyone have any other information that might help me? This car has about 45k on it. Thanks.
