    Okay?

We can go to the Comparisons Board to arg... er, discuss the merits of the Jetta vs. the Protege.

We SHOULD be able to feel free to say what we want here in a dedicated discussion without having to endure attacks. This is just as true here as it is in the Protege discussion.

If someone who owns a Jetta thinks the Miata is the only Mazda vehicle worth considering, SO WHAT??

Maybe over in the BMW 7-Series they are trashing - or who knows, PRAISING - the Protege all over the place. So what? These folks have made different choices than you folks who chose Proteges. That does not make them wrong and you right, it simply means that our different personalities, needs and desires make the world go around.

To those of you who own Proteges and who apparently are hanging out here looking to pick a fight, please STOP it!!!

Let these folks talk as peacefully and vociferously as you do in the Protege discussion.

Everyone needs to go back to their respective corners and worry about their own vehicles and their own thoughts, and stop cross-arguing this Protege/Jetta thing within the dedicated discussions of the two vehicles.

I'm going to have to start removing these posts if they continue, I guess - I didn't think it would have to come to that.

    Those darn Jetta wannabes

Venus and Katzer: Congrats on your new Jettas!! Isn't it amazing that a car in its fourth year of production, with not ONE external change except for clear side marker lights (and the addition of the stationwagon), is still selling so well? Other cars come out with updates every year.....incentives......two 4 one giveaways (kidding, but that will be next ;)), and they still don't get it right.

Venus - The Tiptronic and 1.8T is a great combo, it really is. Like all VW automatics, it still has that half-second delay from D to R or vice versa, but you get used to it.

And, yes, the MPG's in the 1.8t have been, for me anyway, much better than my VR6. Guess that is what 8 more valves and 1 liter less displacement will do...:)
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
Newcar31 - I would totally buy a Protege over a Civic or Corolla. In a second. I really have no prob admitting that the Protege is nicer/more fun than the sedan Civics and Corollas. But I would, and did, buy a Jetta because I wanted something nicer than a Protege. But, I don't go in the Protege room and start bashing it. I don't have to. I was in "my room" just mainly talking to Paul/Vocus since he just recently got rid of a Protege, but now has a Jetta.

The point I was making was that it looks like Mazda might be finally taking this car-making business seriously with the new 6 and RX-8. Aside from the Miata, they really have done nothing spectacular in recent times. The Protege seems to handle well, but they half-a*'d the car in the engine department. Also, they had the Protege looking right in 1999 with the new generation - then they went and got all Pontiac on us and revised it.....WHY? Why are car makers so afraid to use a little restraint in exterior design?

There, no more Mazda talk from me in the Jetta department. :)

Except that I still love the Miata, and I have seen pics of the new prototype Miatas, and they are making a big mistake.......WHY is Ford letting them do it????? I better get one soon....

I was at the dealer today. I did not see a single NEW Jetta. With the new VR6. Is it officially here yet?

Hi all. I have never posted here, but have been reading for a while, especially since I started having problems with my 2001 Jetta. I'll try to make a long story short. :) I bought a 2001 last August. (GLS, cloth-Wolfberg interior, Galactic Blue, monsoon, sunroof, alloy wheels...) I didn't look at any other cars because I knew I wanted a Jetta. Once the weather got cold (in November here in Va.) I started noticing a lot of rattling/squeaky noises from both front doors. The dealership tried fixing it four times and couldn't get rid of the noises...it actually got worse. I documented everything and insisted I was not about to accept that all Jettas sounded like that. (I also contacted an attorney and educated myself on Lemon Laws.) Everyone I have had ride in the car (including the shop foreman at the dealership) said it was unacceptable. I finally got an appointment with a VW rep. for the region and he offered me what I think is a good deal. I can either have VW buy my car back at full price, or get an even swap for a comparable 2002. I got the paperwork from the mediator the other day and decided to take the 2002. (I am upgrading to the leather interior) They will contact me as soon as one is found. I am just really worried that the 2002 will make the same annoying sounds the 2001 did. I did look at other cars before making my decision and I just didn't find anything I liked as much as the Jetta. I have heard many complaints/comments about rattling in these cars. I am hoping my 2001 was just a fluke and they don't ALL do this. Any thoughts on this whole situation and my decision? Sorry this is so long...you all just seem very knowledgable about VW's and I would love any feedback you want to give. Thanks!

I heard that happens pretty often heyowen1 with this car! Good luck anyway.

Yep, it seems like Jettas in recent years have a tendency to rattle or squeek. Your 2002 could be perfect, or be even worse....

Sorry no good news :( If it helps, the dealer fixed my squeeks with clear tape. Mine is a 2002.

As Justin said, door squeaks seem to be quite a common problem. It seems the material VW uses for the door gaskets on the inside upper door panel is a soft "brushed rubber" material that rubs against the paint on the top of the door and creates a squeaking noise. I had the dealer install the "foils" Justin recommended, but the noise came back. I have since installed "X-Treme Rubber Weather Seal" (3/8"x1/8"x17'); available at your local Home Depot, and this has completely alleviated the noise on all doors.

I also have heard that Silicone Spray works great too. However, this requires repeated applications. Just spray it onto a soft rag and rub it onto both the top of the door and the gasket.

Good luck with the '02. BTW, are they giving it to you with the complete 4yr/48K warranty?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Drive the car extensively on a test drive and bumpy roads before taking delivery.

And even if you do have a rattle, don't despair. I had one in the dash, and two dealers (including my "selling" one) could not find it. I took it to a 3rd dealer, and they found it right away and fixed it. They also gave me a free loaner two different times because they had to diagnose the problem then order parts. And it wasn't a smelly crappy loaner either, it came from Budget car rental both times (one Echo, one Maxima SE).

So even if you do have a problem, what says they can not fix the car? And I will tell you ahead of time, a car with leather is going to have more "sounds" in general than one with cloth. This is what I have found out, at least. There are "rubbing" sounds of the leather sometimes in my car (dealer said anyway, and said it was normal). Only when cornering hard and stuff (your clothes rubbing on the seat), but it's not loud or annoying.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
They would have to give the full warranty. They can't take that away for any reason, that's state law.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I let a friend drive my car the other day (he has a 2001 Protege 5-speed ES) and he loved it. He said he looked at Jettas when he bought his Pro (about the same time I bought my 2001 Pro) but was scared off by the short warranty and reliablility issues (I didn't care, I wanted my darn Jetta). :) So he loved my 1.8T when he drove it. And he even agreed that it "felt" alot different than the Protege when driving it. You can feel the weight and all to the car, and he agreed with my assessment of it.

He said he was going to wait until his Pro was paid off maybe, and get a Jetta or A4. We shall see though. I figure, you still will pay a car payment, right? Why wait and pay 4-5 years on a car you intend to trade anyway? Get the car now, pay a little more per month, and enjoy it NOW! :)

And this is not meant to be one of those "Jetta vs. Protege" things either, so don't anyone (including the host) go off about this post of mine. It was just a friend's opinion and mine, that's it.

Hello, could anyone out there tell me if you need any special tools to install a windshield in a 82 Jetta, and how to install.
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
That's one of those technical questions that you will probably have better luck with on http://forums.vwvortex.com

They should be able to answer your question and a lot more. Hope this helps.

Do not despair regarding a car that has door creaking noise because several car companies out there sell a range of compounds designed to lessen or eliminate these noises. Refer back to post #4145. Buy the product from your local GM dealer. Good luck!

Yeah, vocus, my Jetta started in DC, moved to Dayton, OH and now to Omaha, NE with me. I'm in the Air Force, although I just transitioned to the Air Force Reserve so I'll be staying in Omaha.

For all you squeakers out there, my 2000 GLS makes no unwanted noises at all. I have 23,000 on it.

My Toyota Sienna blew an injector, so we had to drive almost 900 miles to Akron in the Jetta. Two kids in booster seats, wife and dog. The dog just for the first 280 miles, and had to sit up front because she's big. Dog loved the heated seats! Wife hated being cramped in back between two car seats. Trunk was loaded to the gills.

After dropping of the dog at Mom's, we put a new RCA VCP/TV unit in back for the kids. It sits on the seat between them and has a flip up LCD screen. Worked great - you can't travel with two preschoolers without movies! I sent the power cable between the seats into the trunk outlet. With a max load we still got 33 mpg on the highway. When my in-laws saw all our luggage piled up in their living room, they couldn't believe it all fit in the Jetta's trunk! What a great car!

I took my car back to the shop today, because they left their dirty handprints on the trim around my driver's door window (the cloth part) and I wanted it cleaned up. Also, the dash was still rattling a little bit. Turns out, they didn't fix it right the first time. So they have to order parts again, but this time I am keeping the loaner until the parts come in (their fault, so they can pay for my rental). Hopefully they will get it right this time. At least I get the free loaner and all, so it's no big deal to me. And the service manager is really nice, and works with me on stuff.

Never had better customer service before, and (ironically) my first Protege (the 1999 DX I had) came from the same exact dealer. Amazing how much a step up in customer service you get by buying the VW at the same dealer. I was not treated this well when I took the Mazda there before.

there's a nasty pothole near my house, and I've had the misfortune of driving over it a couple of times. Now my right front tire looks low, but it's not (I checked it with a tire pressure gauge). Could there be anything else wrong with the tire besides a leak or something? I don't want to drive around with a bad tire, but it seems OK except for the way it looks. Any thoughts??

Took the Audi A4 over the Jetta. Was a tough call because the Jetta was so much fun to drive, but I'm quite happy with my decision. Thanks all for the advice these last couple weeks!
  • sarah233sarah233 Member Posts: 161
ooh. I really like the new A4s. Congrats!
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
You were "kind of" kidding? The A4 and Jetta are two different cars.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
On paper the 1.8T in the A4 makes 170 HP, yet every Audi salesguy quickly states it's really 180. Dunno why Audi bothers. They used to worry about the 1.8T stealing 2.8 sales and if the HP difference were really only 10, more people might go for the 1.8T. with the greater power of the 3.0 in the A4, it makes sense that they finally come clean and at least announce from this point all A4s are pulling 180 HP.
  • katzerkatzer Member Posts: 5
Purchased a Jetta; however, I had to have it specially ordered, since none was available within my service area--manual 5-speed, my color and that. Anyone know or can relate from their experience how long a factory order usually takes to show at the dealership. Thanks! Anxiously waiting for my Jetta.
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
One thing I noticed about the new A4 when I was sitting in one is that I'm able to adjust the seat and steering wheel to get perfectly comfortable. This is very rare for me, because so many cars do not have a telescoping steering wheel.

The wheel in the A4 extends a little further than the one in my Jetta, which is a blessing because I have really long legs.

I sure wish I could afford the new A4. I really like the interior and the new bodystyle.
  • venus537venus537 Member Posts: 1,443
i heard the difference in horsepower between the passat/a4 and the jetta is due to the way the engine is configured. with the passat/a4 engine oriented 90% from the jetta engine, it's not able to get as much air forced in. i'll have to look into this further to see if it's true. because right now, i'm wondering why they were both rated at 150 bhp the previous year.

Picked up my new car on Monday as planned and I'm LOVING it. The 1.8t is incredible, it's actually quieter, silkier and smoother than the vr6. It's amazing all the improvements VW has made to the jetta from the nov 2001 (as in model year, picked up my first jetta in nov 2000) jetta to the march 2002 jetta. I include the months because of all the constant "running" changes VW makes. The new cloth seats are no longer lint collecters like the old "rib" styled seats.

and (justin, you'll love this) VW has posted a bulletin to its dealers indicating that they NOW recommend using 87 octane gas for the 1.8t. premium gas can actually be harmful in cold climates (that's me, wisconsin boy). In warmer weather it's ok to use the premium gas if you want to get that little extra thrust at high rpms. It even states on my gas cap to use 87/91. but is the engine still rated at 180 bhp with regular gas. if you can get this little extra power using premuim, you would think not.

    Hi all,
I just bought a 2002 Jetta GLX, Galactic Blue, Beige Leather, and 17" wheels. This car has the new 200hp motor. I seriously debated between the 1.8T and this new motor. In the end, I didn't care for a turbocharged car and preferred the smoother power delivery of the 6 cylinder motor. This is my first VW after a few BMWs.

I did get the 0.9% financing and bought the car for $26,012 + tax.

The Jetta, Golf, GTI, New Beetle, & TT (US models I listed) are built on the A platform, revision #4.

The Audi A4 is on a different platform, I think on the "B" platform (correct me if I wrong)

So in summary A4 Jetta is the Mark 4 Jetta, built on the A4 platform.

Many audi TT parts (including rims) are interchangeable.
  • fischdafischda Member Posts: 272
Do I understand that you owned a 2001 Jetta and just bought a 2002? (post 4297) Did you trade or keep both? What engine did you have in the '01. Seems like a frivolous thing to buy the same model after only one year - but I'm considering trading my 2000 for a 2002 :-) What made you do it?

My other option would be to go for the aftermarket suspension mods, exhaust, 17" wheels and engine chip.
  • msealsmseals Member Posts: 257
Venus, I too live in a colder climate, Detroit Metro area. One thing that might cause the change in gas when it gets cold is that colder air is denser. Meaning that you would get a more air in the same amount of space than when it is warm. This causes the combustion to be better and more efficient, thus people put intercoolers on turbos or cold air intakes. The engine produces more power the colder the air gets. When it is cold, a lower octane could keep the engine from combusting at a higher temperature. Or rather, it would ignite with the same amount of power with 87 octane in the cold as it would on 91 in the heat. I don't think that it would necessarily affect the power rating, it may vary 1-2+ Hp in but that is very marginal when you are talking Bhp and it would be even smaller at the wheels.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
He had a VR6 2001 5-speed, and traded for a 1.8T Tiptronic. Keep up, will ya! :) Just kidding. The first was Galatic Blue, the current is the bright red color. Am I right, Venus?

The improvements for 2002 (most being the warranty) is what made me decide to buy the Jetta finally. I have lusted after once since they decuted as 1999.5 models, and I finally got it. And if you think trading a 2001 on a 2002 is frivolous, try buying a 2001 and trading it in 8 months later. I just saw the car on the way to the grocery store one day on the dealer's lot. I came home with a new car and the groceries. My dad came to help me take stuff out, and he was like, "where's your car?". I said, "right there", and pointed to the Jetta? He was like, "you bought a new car when you went shopping for groceries? Didn't they have hamburger?". :) I thought that was really funny.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I ran 87 octane in my 2002 1.8T once, and I could feel the difference. This was back in February 2002. To me, the car lost a little of its oomph. Also, mpg went from the usual 23-25 down to 21-23. Since the difference between 87 and 91 is not that much in price, I decided to stick with premium. But with gas prices going up, I will soon be switching back to 87.. :)
  • target3target3 Member Posts: 155
So is there any merit to VW's statements (post #4279) that using higher octane gas in colder climates can damage the engine?

I went on VW's website, which still recommends premium fuel for both 1.8T and VR6. With all the testing that they do, I find it hard to believe that all of a sudden, they would say "watch out in cold climates."
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
yep, the 1.8t, contrary to popular belief, is actually "smoother" than the 12v VR6. i love it. i do miss the VR6's gruff personality though.

as far as the octane thing goes, these aren't nascar or grand prix engines....i would worry about tire pressure before octane ratings. i know that turbo work extremely efficiently in cold weather - the extra octane in 93 gas could cause problems.
  • fischdafischda Member Posts: 272
I know you wanted a Jetta for a long time and were waiting to get right side up on your Protoge. So on that day heading out for groceries, were you ready, or did you make a true impulse buy?

I you could buy cars in the checkout isle of the grocery store, I'd probably buy one every month!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
No, I did not plan to buy the Jetta at all. It just happend. I had regrets when I got the Protege, not because it was a bad car, but because I really wanted the Jetta. I honestly did just go in and decide to get the Jetta though. It was truly the only impulse decision I ever made.

I was going to try to mod the Protege, but it was difficult to do (for the engine it was, because I had automatic) and would have cost about $5000. So I decided to take that money and get the Jetta instead.

Also, my mother passed away in January 2001. She worked for 30 years at Hair Cuttery, where she made it all the way to Regional Coordinator. She always said she wanted to go on vacation, get a new car, yadda yadda yadda. She died in her sleep at the age of 53. I decided on that day that I was not going to sit around and say what I wanted or was going to do, I was going to do it. Live for the day, because there might not be a tomorrow.
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
My Jetta was a semi-impulse buy. My wife and I were in car-buying mode of thought, but hadn't really decided to go right out and get serious about looking for one.

I had taken my wife's Accord to get its oil changed, and the VW dealer is right next door to the Honda dealer. I walked over and decided to test drive the 02 Jetta because I had heard about the increased power for 2002. Once I took the car out and felt the torquey 1.8T it was all over. My Honda was smooth and reliable, but as exciting as dry toast.

So I talked to the sales manager and he offered a reasonable amount below MSRP for a new-model-year car, with 5.9% for 60mo.

I called my wife and we decided to get the Jetta. Traded in my 98 Accord V6 Coupe. We both love the Jetta. We're planning to take a road trip in June down highway 101 and stay in B&B's along the way.

8u6hfd: a4 shares its platform with the passat.

fischda: you can read post #4238 for my explanation (or justification to myself) of getting a 2002 jetta.

target3: you can contact your service department to confirm the bulletin.

    vocus: yep, you're correct.

I have been reading these posts for a long time appreciate hearing about the reviews, good and bad, for the Jetta.

I own a 99 Mercury Cougar V6 MTX. When I was car shopping back in 99 I really wanted a Jetta with a VR6. Then I noticed that the Passat 1.8T cost less AND had comparable performance figures.

Test drove the Passat and loved it, however, when it came down to buying time it was still more than I wanted to spend at the time. I remember wishing that VW offered the 1.8T in the Jetta...then I could have afforded it.

A few months after buying the Cougar the 2000 Jetta's come out with the 1.8T! Man was I upset.

Don't get me wrong, I like the Cougar. One of the reasons I bought it was that it really had a European feel to it, and it had great looks and performance I wanted...but it wasn't the Jetta.

I love the teutonic style dash, the blue and red lights (my buddy owns a 98 528i, and I really believe the Jetta's interior looks just as good as the BMW's).

Now, I have 2 years left on the Cougar...I am considering trading it in when I get back to the states and buying a Jetta. My only concerns now are the high mileage on the Cougar, and my less than stellar credit.

If I can get approved through my bank I will try to buy a Jetta, if not...it will just be a couple of more years with the Cougar.

Hopefully, within a year or so, I will be driving in a silver Jetta 1.8T with tiptronic, leather seats, and monsoon. (I am debating Monsoon, most reviews haven't been favorable).

    Take care,

Just visited VW's web site and they have extended their financing deals. 0.9% is available through April 30, 2002 on the Jetta on all models except the "GLI" model. Looks like a misprint on their web page.
  • fischdafischda Member Posts: 272
Venus, I went back and read your post. You're my kind of car enthusiast. I'm the same way. I love test driving cars even though I have no inclination to buy. I will probably sell the Jetta this fall for a full-size pickup (Toyota Tundra). We're building a house and when we own a house, a truck comes in very handy. I also want to get rid of the minivan soon. Last night I test drove an LL Bean Subaru Outback wagon and liked it a lot. I want something all-wheel drive for Nebraska winters. So many cars!

I really wanted to test drive the Subaru WRX! What a sweet rally car! I'd just get myself in trouble, though. I throw the Jetta around and speed too much as it is!
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
except the "GLI" model. Looks like a misprint on their web page.

Are you saying that "GLI" is a misprint?

The GLI is the new sport-oriented Jetta.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Blueguy, how much was your rear sway bar? I looked on Neuspeed.com, and they wanted like $300 for the adjustable one. Also, doesn't the Jetta have a rear sway bar already? I thought it did.

Anakin, I know you got the front sway bar. Did it go on in addition to the one that's on there, or was it the strut bar you got? Just wondering.
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
I didn't get the front sway.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I had a 2001 Altima rental because my Jetta's in the shop getting the rattling dash fixed (they didn't do it right the first time, and they also left my car dirty). I took the Altima back because there was a problem with the door lock (it would not unlock for me). They gave me a 2002 RAV4 AWD automatic. It's slow to me, but it's still a pretty nice ride. Maybe next time... :)

I pick up my car today though, and can't wait to get back behind the wheel of my 1.8T and get that engine spinning. :)
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
I paid $225 for my 28mm adjustable Neuspeed swaybar. And no, the Jetta with a sports suspension doesn't have a rear swaybar.

I got mine through a group buy on Vortex. That's usually the cheapest way to get items like that.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
This probably isn't the place...but how do you like the Rav4? My parents are looking for a new mini-SUV thing...What options, etc? Thanks...if you perfer, just email me...I believe you still have my address.

Umm...to keep this on Jetta topic, the passenger side mirror of my g/f's '91 Jetta fell off. What's funny is that the words "Objects in mirror appear closer" is actually printed on the plastic that the mirror is supposed to be stuck to! We took her car one night and I looked at the mirror and thought that it was just dirty, but when I rolled down the window to clean it, the mirror was not there!! Too funny at the time. Now the driver mirror is shaking itself loose! I think some silicon should fix it fairly easily though.

Get the "L" package for the RAV4. Then add the other stuff. If you can get the Torsen LSD, get it.

    The options become pricey though.

    Nice car inside and out.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
Is the L the top one? Or is that the S?
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
looking at the Canada's Toyota site

I'd go with Package C or D with the RAV4.
