Ok, now that I have decided to get the Jetta, probably in a couple of months (trying to sell my car on my own) what should be a good price. I want a 2002 GLS 1.8t with sport lux. pkg, monsoon and that is it. I don't want leather, I don't want heated mirrors, though that would be nice :), but I don't want to pay too much. I was thinking or rather hoping I could get this for about 20900, does that sound unreasonable. Especially if the demand is a little low. I figured it is since they are offering low interest rates. Sales are bad for everyone for the past 6 months anyway, so I hope I could get a deal!! if not a steal.!!!

The only bad thing about the Velour is, that is picks up lint like crazy. Every other week, I need to use a lint roller on the seats and armrests. Eventually I might get the Wet Okole neoprene seat covers (approved for side airbag usage)...

Get the cold weather package, it's only $150, and fills two empty voids on the dash.

Take a read of this in regards to a VW dealership's treatment of a customer :

    cupholder1 "Inconsiderate Salespeople...." Nov 21, 2001 12:46pm

You may have to cut and paste that link into the URL bar.
Only reason I bring it up is in regards to our previous discussion on car price/dealership treatment.
I am NOT trying to bash VW over this...just showing that there are good and bad dealerships for all companies.

Get the leather. The velour is a lint magnet and a pain in the butt. The leather is nice and makes the car smell great.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I could not believe that when I read it. The police would have had to be called if that were me. I would have hurt someone REAL bad in that case.

And that's the sales dept. I had drama with service, and with the Mazda (mostly) anyway. No Mazda dealer in the state of Maryland knows how to treat a customer, in my opinion. They suck at it.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
Yeah nice dealership, eh? Hey, you have a taker on that magnetic bra yet? Did you say it was torn a bit?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
No taker. It's got a tiny tear on the front, but the molding that holds it to the car covers that.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
Figure about 100-200 over invoice. E-mail the surrouding dealers with exact specs and tell them you want offers that break down the Invoice cost, cost over, extra fees and TTL. You'll get responses. Trust me. The best offer for me came from a dealer in LA but I decided for the $100 savings I didn't see value in driving all the way up there. I went with a $200 over invoice deal and feel that I got my money's worth.

BTW, check Carsdirect.com and if you belong to Costco, see about using their program too. A good friend used his Costco deal to pick up a WRX last year for a little over invoice.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
Ok thanks...if you don't mind holding onto it, I'm still interested in it. So many rock chips this year... sniff sniff :(

Is the tear visible at all? Is there a chance stuff (dirt, leaves, etc) can get stuck in/under the tear? Thanks again.

Oh...one more question for all Jetta people....how different are the 1.8T and the TDI? G/f's dad is thinking about one. Thanks.
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
Dude, do yourself a favor and get the leather. The velour drives me NUTS. It collects all the lint and dog hair on my clothing. It took me 45 minutes to clean the seats last time. Yuck.
  • rileyyhrileyyh Member Posts: 49
Amazing! Did you know that just a couple posts before you, I had the same questions about the 2002 1.8T GLS? And you're planning on getting pretty much all the specs I was going to get. I was going to get fully loaded except for maybe the cold weather package. But you know what? I decided pretty much on getting the Subaru WRX instead. I think I'll be happier. I'm going to be buying in a month or so too. Also, take a look at the maintenance/problems boards for the jetta sedan and the Subaru WRX. While there are a couple remarks about paint chipping in the WRX board, there are all kinds of rattles and windows that fall into the car and stereos that don't work right etc etc. for the Jetta (mind you I'm talking about 2000-2002 Jettas). Basically the reliability of subaru and the all wheel drive and best crash test for the small car class helped me decide on the WRX. Odd how we look at the same car but I decide on another and you decide on the Jetta. =oP Then again, who knows, maybe my parents already bought a Jetta 1.8T and I can't do anything about it except drive the thing hoping nothing breaks within 4-5 years. The thought of buying a brand new car, especially with today's technology, that may break in some way within the first year is the largest turn off for me from the Jetta. Just my two cents.

Sorry to hear you've been having problems. My Jetta has been perfect for 8500 miles.

The robots in Mexico can assemble the car just as well as the robots in Germany. It's possible to have a lemon with any car. I guarantee you that someone out there has an Acura RSX that they hate.

    Good luck with your issues.

    LMAO!!! Sweet graphic!!!
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
If you go through the site and price a car here, invoice according to here, is about $1000 less than MSRP (not much room to deal with).

My 02 Golf, 7500 miles, not a problem, well a slight rattle.
  • msealsmseals Member Posts: 257
Hey, I priced the car I want out on Edmunds and even with the leather the invoice price came to $21,490 and that included dest. Here is what I added:

    2002 GLS 1.8t
    cold weather pkg
    leather pkg
    Monsoon sound system
    sport luxury pkg

The TMV came to $22,787 and the sticker would be $23,650. What do you guys think I could get the car for. I was hoping for about $21,600 or so and get the 3.9% financing for 60 months that they are offering now.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
You know the Cold Weather Pkg. is part of the Leather Pkg., right? Edmund's doesn't tell you that, but it is.

Also, tell them you are going to pay $200 over invoice and that's it. Become a member of Costco or BJ's to take advantage of their buying service. Check to see what dealers take it first, it could save you some major money.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I have a 2002 GLS 1.8T Tiptronic. Had issues with the radio quitting (Monsoon, and it was a fuse), and had 2 rattles. Fixed both of them at the dealer (though it took 2 different dealers and 3 trips), and that has been it. 13,000 miles thus far, and I LOVE IT!!!! :)
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
....i just have a hard time even believing some of the posts. In two weeks the car has basically disintegrated, and then they mention, by name, an Acura as a solution?? An Acura??? Not buying it. Who cross-shops a two door motorcycle engined Honda with a four door real car??? No one I know.....;)

About the cloth seats. I know in past years they were lint magnets, but I thought for 2002 they are using different fabric.....is that not true?

Again, the Subura WRX and VW Jetta are two TOTALLY different cars. Just look at the outside. The Jetta is smooth and classic - the WRX is AWFUL. Just awful. What happened to it? And the interior....

The Jetta doesn't pretend to be a rally car. The WRX does....:)

I heard on the radio today that VW is offering good deals on Jetta wagons. I guess everyone that wanted one, got one already. VW needs to keep up the good work and hurry up with the MicroBus and Beetle Cabrio if they want to stay on top, sales wise.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I had a 2002 GLS loaner, and the seats were still lint magnets. Center armrest was covered with lint from my white sweatshirt (and the interior was black!) in 10 minutes of driving the car. Forget it, get the leather.

I went to the dealer last night, and they had a couple demos at cheap prices. It was Antwerpen VW in Pasadena, Md. They been having this Jetta-thon around here for awhile too. Heard it a couple times. Just means special financing, that's it.

Jetta vs, WRX: I actually like the front end of the WRX for some reason. The Jetta's lines are classic though, hands down winner in styling. And the interior of the WRX is cheap looking and feeling too. Not even close on a bad day to a VW.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I had a hard time believing that story about the GLS blowing its turbo in 2 weeks too, and the transmission too. The Tiptronic will NOT go into 5th gear until the car is above 40 mph, BTW.

Also, I am sure the dealer would happily replace the car after all that drama in 2 weeks. Make sense?
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
I re-read my post. Did not want to dispute the good points about the WRX. It does have a kick-butt AWD system, and nice power. Seems like it would be a great car to drive hard and trash. I just couldn't actually be seen in it :)

When are they going to have a Miata-a-thon??? ;)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Feeling like trading in the Jetta on a Miata already, or just adding it to your collection as your "play" car? :)
  • bpibpi Member Posts: 120
    Anything specific?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Probably just financing rates and stuff. They just say on the radio ads around MD/DC/VA that they are having good deals on them. Nothing special though.

VW NEVER offers rebates though, so forget it. I was talking to a dealer about that last night. He said they never do because it lowers resale value of the cars. He also said he would gimme $21K for my car right now (trade) if I wanted to (it's 5 months old, 1.8T Tiptronic, Sport Luxury, Monsoon, Leather Pkg., 13K miles). I think that's really good resale value, since I paid $23.5K for it.

Of course, I told him NO WAY! :)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
You are the one who traded a 2001 for a 2002, right? How did you do on it? Did you lose alot of money on the trade? I was just wondering, because I traded my 8 month old Protege ES (with 20K on it) in for my 2002 Jetta. I lost $4000! How much (if any) did you lose on your deal?
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
I never knew that rebates lowered resale...interesting. Did you get any rebates on your Pro? Maybe, becasue Mazda offers rebates, unlike its competitors, that's why the resale of the Pro is just average. Just a thought.

Does VW offer any sort of "Grad rebates" or some sort of special financing for Grad students?
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
2002 1.8T with sticker of $25,809 is being sold for $21,295, a 2002 VR6 Jetta Wagon with sticker $27,259 for $22,595, a 2002 Jetta TDI sticker $23,769 selling for $19,950 all at the same dealer. So an offer of 21K for your car from dealer is fantastic. There are some really good deals available right now. And low financing rates in addition.
VW does not have rebates but there is dealer cash at times.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I got a $750 rebate on my 2001 Protege when I bought it, and the same $750 on the 1999 as well. Maybe that's why Honda doesn't offer rebates either. Toyota just stated doing that on the old Corolla and Solaras. Yes, rebates do lower resale value.

And VW offers special financing rates all the time, as well as a special first time buyer program. No rebates of any kind though.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
$25,809 sticker on a 1.8T? What the heck did that car have? I had EVERY option (but the CD changer), and my sticker was $24,675 on the 2002.

Where did you see these reduced price cars anyway? Just curious.
  • sarah233sarah233 Member Posts: 161
$22,373 for my Jetta 1.8T manual transmisson with

    -sport luxury
    -monsoon
    -leather package

    MSRP was $23,600, I think.

oh, and i have not had any problems....
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I bought mine on 11/3/01 and its MSRP was $24,675. Dealer tried to write up the deal for MSRP. I said $500 over invoice, and he said it couldn't be done. I grabbed the keys and title to my Mazda and started to walk. He said to hold on, and wrote the deal for $800 under MSRP (not quite $500 over invoice, but close enough for me). I ended up paying $23,800 for a GLS 1.8T with Sport Luxury, Monsoon, Tiptronic, and Leather Pkg.

Only 2 problems here, like I said before. 2 rattles (fixed) and a dead radio (bad fuse). 13K miles and going strong... :)
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
If I remember correctly the 1.8T was around $24,5 and had some dealer add ons to sticker to $25,8. The dealer is Lynch VW in Chicago area, though I do not want to advertise for them.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I saw prices about the same at Antwerpen in Md. last night. I don't wanna advertise for them though, because their service sucks.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
I have been "OUTED." My top secret info has fallen into the hands of some clever poster here at Edmunds. I am ruined. :)

I would think that prices would be falling soon, if they are shutting down Puebla for a week....
  • jpvwaudijpvwaudi Member Posts: 139
VW Credit has a finance plan for college grads, but no rebates. To qualify, you need 10% down, be a recent grad 1 year or so, and have no derogatory credit history. You lost 4g's on your Protege because its a Mazda; not that its a bad car, but they're not burning up the market new, or used.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
Vocus lost on his Pro..not me. I still enjoy mine.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I am the one who lost money on the 2001 Protege. That's ok, because like I said, the VW turns pretty good profits here in the DC/MD/VA area. Could turn around and sell it as-is now with 13K for $21K or so, and paid $23.5K for it 5 months ago. :)
  • msealsmseals Member Posts: 257
No, I didn't know that the cold weather pkg came with the leather pkg until I hit VW.com. That would knock off about $150 or so and bring the invoice price down to $21,357. I could live with paying a few hundered over that if I can sell my car out right. Check out the resale value on a 2000 Civic Si with no options and 47,000 miles on it. Even with all the miles I am still looking at around $12.8k for trade in, $14.3k for private sale and $15 something for dealer. That is crazy for a car that stickered for $17.2k and it two years old and 47k miles. If I can sell my car by June, Hello Jetta!!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
You could try listing your car on http://www.autotrader.com. I listed one of my cars there, and it took 2 weeks to sell it. You can list free, or decide to "upgrade" and pay. They will run until it sells, if you pay though (like $10 or something like that).

Also, good luck trying to get a Jetta at invoice. With the special prices going on now, you might pull it off. But usually it's $3-500 over invoice (which is still not bad). And these cars have good resale value as well.

Hondas hold their value well, and Sis especially. You should be able to sell that car in a flat second! They are hot sellers, and hard to come by (unless they were abused or something).

  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
that Civic Si should sell in less than a day. those are in high-demand. i bet their are hundreds of kids that want a Si, but don't like the looks or suspension of the new model
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
...resold his Si to a dealership one year after he bought it from them. Guess how much he sold it to them for? $300 less than he paid! That was one year and 15k miles into the car. We figured they resold it within the week for a 1-2k profit. If not more. Those Sis sell themselves.
  • zoomzoom79zoomzoom79 Member Posts: 272
$11,000 for a 2000 with 34k. Paint or not it's a good deal. They had some kind of fender bender and there is some paintwork but it's good enough for me and not visible unless you know what you are looking for.

I think that Vocus forgot to tell us that the dealer that was offering $21,500 for his Jetta was going to sell him a 2002 Kia Spectra for MSRP :)
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
If you go to Edmunds.com's Used Power Shopper (either to list a used vehicle or to look for one available in your area) you are dealing with autotrader, but Edmunds gets credit for it. So it would be a nice thing to do for our gracious host, Edmunds.com, to go there via the Used Power Shopper.

Oh, and vocus - I'm on the case about that other problem. B'lieve it or not, I can't be here 24/7!

I was wondering something about trading in a leased car...

Say the buyout on the car is X dollars and the dealership will pay KBB for the car at Y dollars. Y is less than X (say $500 lower), do you pay JUST that difference (assuming no penalties) or do you also pay the remaining tax on the lease?
  • 68bullitt68bullitt Member Posts: 177
Anyone have a 2002 GTI/Golf/Jetta that was built after Sept. 2001 that has had any problems with their window regulators (e.g., window falling into the door)? I'm trying to figure out if VW has fixed this problem that has been plaguing pre-2002 MkIV cars. Thanks.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
I haven't heard anyone mention window problems with newer VWs.

    Hello friends,
I have got a price quote of 21500 For a Jetta 1.8T automatic with just sunroof option. IS this a good price? if not what will be a good price? I am in houston, texas.

    thanks a lot

If it's 100-300 over invoice it's a fine deal. Heck if you can live with a dealer making $500 over invoice, then that's fine too.
