I read the next generation will be different than the Golf.....Anyone else have any info ?
When can we expect to see this ?? Sept 02' ??

... typically are under the hood and very close to the master cylinder since they modulate the pressure in the brake lines going from the brake cylinder to all four wheels.

Make sure you get documentation of your unit being replaced or not needing replacement, as in your case, Paul ... we discussed ABS over on the Protege topic a few months back and that part you're talking about is probably THE most expensive single part in the car. On the Protege a new ABS control unit is $2,000. (No kidding, I called the parts department at my dealership.) One of you guys should call a VW dealer and get the price ... I guarantee you'll be blown away!

Um...VWvortex has info on the 03 Jettas. It's the same basically, save for a standard moonroof on the GLS and the option of a 1.8T for the GL.

Maybe the 04's will be all new. No idea. The Jetta's selling so well that VW may not be willing to risk releasing a new version until the current one's less popular. I'd put my money on an 05 new version.

I guess I never thought about it going up down the road. I am sure it was documented though, but I will make sure when I look at my papers at home tonight.

I notice that some power is taken by the AC when it's on. Hardly noticeable though, but I have the Tiptronic as well. And the AC was on high when I was driving on the highway (it's like 90-something in MD today!). Not as bad as with my previous cars (99 and 01 Protege). They really used to lose power with the AC on.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
I'm so jealous that you need to use AC right now... :(
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Don't be jealous. I HATE the hot weather. I much prefer it to be something like 75 or something, with low himidity. It was 76 last night at 9:30! I guess summer is upon us now. :)

It was 91 degrees in Minneapolis yesterday. Believe it or not, 2 weeks ago it was snowing. Today it's supposed to be 88 with a chance of severe thunderstorms and large hail. Gotta love Minnesota.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Good God, that's a mess. It was like in the 40s at night last week here in Maryland as well. This weather is just crazy. It's like the meteorologists just play along now, they can't even hardly forecast the weather anymore.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
I rarely if ever drive with the AC or Defroster off. If the AC is off because it's cold (pretty rare - late at night or very early morning) I need to have the defroster running to keep the windows from fogging up. Even when I'm driving around town with the sunroof open I have the AC running.

BTW, I'm not worried about that hurting my car. My old warhouse Stanza went through that since 95 when I bought it. Still runs and the AC still cranks.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
The forecasters have a rough job here in MN. On the other hand, a forecaster has a cake job down in blueguy's neck of the woods.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
    The irony.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
They must send the newbies down to San Diego to do their forcasting internship. How hard could it be? Average temp 72 degrees and almost no rainfall (expains why people can't drive in the rain). Hotter inland, cooler on the coast. Simple.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Stop it! You are so making me wanna take the rest of the day off to scan the web for a job and apartment in SoCal! :)

I am definitely planning a trip there around this time next year though. Should be fun. I have been to San Diego but never San Francisco. Can't wait. :)
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
funny you would mention that. i noticed that my car seems to run somehow smoother, less "punchy" with the a/c on. i guess it is sapping a little power, but it makes my stop and go driving seem less head-jerky. strange. i am just glad that the Jetta has real a/c as opposed to what my 01 Civic had. i miss my dad's 77 Olds Customer Cruiser a/c. that car could have been used as a meat locker, is was so cold. :)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I drove a black 1999 Civic coupe back before I bought the first 1999 Protege. On the day I drove it, it was like 98 degrees or something. I drove it for 15 mins. with the AC on high, and it never did cool down. I got out of the car with this sick feeling in my stomach because of it. When I test drove the Protege, it got cold as ice inside. (I didn't drive the Jetta back then, because the 99.5 models weren't out yet). Anyway, I can't believe how weak Honda's AC systems are. They are suppose to be the best, you think the AC would be pretty good too. Oh well.

In the moutains on a cool, crisp night? It's a slice of heaven. The engine feels like it has 300 HP. I almost feel like moving to the Sierras just to experience that turbo-lightness all the time.

BTW, SF's pretty fun. Expensive but a great place to visit. I've turned down job offers up there though as I can't see living that weather. Below 40 and I'm not happy, over 80 and I'm a bear.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The weather's more adverse up there then I would guess? Is it not as good as SoCal? I don't check weather often from other states, so that's why I wanted to know.

I LOVE the whisting sound of the turbo with the windows down though. It's almost intoxicating!
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
Yes, your Jetta's heater will get a workout in SF. Mark Twain supposedly once said "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." I believe it. Skin-bluing winds and bone-wrenching cold one day and on other days it's just plain frigid. Sometimes they get nice days (maybe 15 days of the year) but most of the time nippy is an apt description of the city.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
Mark Twain has never been to Minneapolis?
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
i would take la jolla/san diego over san fran. but i would take key west's hot and sticky weather over anything!

has anyone noticed, that in reverse, the jetta speedo actually moves up? in my other cars, the speedo actually went backwards until it hit a stopper.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
That's because your other cars were bass-ackwards. :) Just kidding.

I noticed that as well, but it's not the only car that does that. Not of mine anyway.
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
About the Mark Twain quote, the way I heard it was "one AUGUST in San Francisco." I spent a week in SF one August and oh so foolishly brought summer clothes. I froze my butt off, it was in the 30's and 40's at night and 50's in the daytime. I had shorts, short-sleeved shirts and nothing that even resembled a jacket or coat to wear.

OTOH, I spent two weeks in SF one February. And I oh so foolishly brought winter clothes. All of the two weeks the weather was in the upper 70's and lower 80's.

    Sheesh.

I love hearing you guys complaining about the cold...Open invite for any of you to come up to Canada in January...heck come up now...it's snowing again. :D
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
I find 40 degrees F cold. I know I want seat heaters in my next car (maybe an 02 Jetta?). Plus I love to drive with the moonroof/windows open on cool, clear nights. A bit nippy but it feels sensational! Seat heaters will do wonders for my narrow comfort level.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
About 2 weeks ago I would have killed for 40 F weather! I think that's what it is outside right now actually.
I like seat heaters but they make me sleepy early in the morning!
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
Minneapolis is not that much different than Canada in the winter. It has got to be the coldest big city in the lower 48 states. I spent one year in Grand Forks, ND and I experienced something that no human should ever have to experience. It was 55 degrees BELOW zero with an -88 windchill. It was record breaking for that day. You can't tell me it gets that much colder in Canada.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Another Jetta eh? Ok, one thing if you get an 02 Jetta. You can't complain about the Jetta anymore. :) Just kidding.

I have the seat heaters with leather, and they are really nice. I love getting in the car in winter and turning them all the way up. Feels good to warm the seat, because the heater takes an additional minute or two to warm up. Also, I have a bad back and the seat heaters make my muscles feel better on long drives.

Yesterday was the first hot day since I got the car (it hit 90 here in MD). The leather isn't as hot as I thought it would be. After having the car parked for 4 hours, I just threw my shirt over the seat bottom cushion (I had shorts on). I thought it would be alot hotter, but it wasn't.

    Hello,

I'm in the process of purchasing a new Jetta GLS 1.8T with sport lux, leather and monsoon.

Can anyone tell me what kind of fuel economy they're getting from the '02 1.8T? I've looked on this board, but haven't found that.

Also, would you say it's worth it to get the sport lux package instead of the normal lux? The 17'' wheels look great, but I'm a bit concerned about increased road noise and bumpy city streets with this low profile tires.

    Thanks.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
What's the deal with Euro cars and heated seats? I know there are some American and Japanese cars with heated seats, but it seems like all European cars at least offer heated seats. Do Europeans have cold asses?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
If you are concerned about bumps, then you better drive both combinations before buying. I have the same exact car you are going to buy (mine is Tiptronic though, but you didn't say what yours is going to be). The ride borders on harsh on bumpy roads, definitely firmer than my old Protege. The handling is great though.

Fuel economy lately, for me, has been 24-25mpg with a somewhat heavy foot and also using regular fuel in my 1.8T (premium is too expensive!). Found out using regular doesn't affect power or economy, so I started doing it. At least until premium goes back down to reasonable levels.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
That's too funny! I got heated seats in the Jetta for the first time, and now I would not have a car without them. They are wonderful!

I think it's a luxury item and that's why most cars in the Jetta's price point don't have them (any, actually, that I know of, have them).
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
-55 F?? Now that's savage! I can't recall it EVER being that cold in Calgary....and -88F with windchill? Now that's cold.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
I know. I didn't believe it myself. I didn't think it could get that cold in the lower 48. Seat heaters would be useless because you probably wouldn't be able to start the car. If you did get your car started, chances are good that you would break something because every part in your car is brittle at that temp. IMO, anywhere that you can die simply by going outside is not a place that you want to live. The year after I was in Grand Forks, they had their 100 year flood which pretty much flooded the entire city. It floods every year there. No offense to anyone who lives in Grand Forks, but I don't know why anyone lives there.

i LOVE my seat heaters! i like them better than the heater--i like it to be warm, but not stuffy. i agree with blueguy--turn on the seat heaters and open the windows and sunroof on a cool crisp night.

ste5e: i have a 1.8T manual with sport lux, and i get about 19 mpg driving mostly on city streets in LA (i drive with a lead foot.) when i drive mixed or strictly highway, it goes up to 24 - 28 mpg. i use premium fuel. i don't have a problem with the ride, it can be a little rough on a bumpy road but not unbearable. i don't find it to be too loud, but louder than my civic.
  • newjetta2newjetta2 Member Posts: 3
I'm surprised you're having trouble finding a 1.8T without the luxury packages.

Last weekend I took deliver of a silver 02 Jetta 1.8T with the sport supspension package and cold weather package. I didn't want the sunroof, so couldn't justify the 1200-2200 for wheels alone. I picked up OEM take-offs of the 15" alloys for $500 in perfect condition and had them installed yesterday.
  • ste5este5e Member Posts: 6
    Thanks for the responses.

I'll definitely drive the car with sport lux before buying. One of the things that surprised me was how quiet the Jetta was with the 15'' wheels at highway speeds. I drive an Integra now and it's loud. The Jetta with 15s sounds more like our 2001 Maxima at those speeds, if not quieter.

What did you pay for your 2002 Jetta if you got a silver one? DId you pay just under TMV or more like $500 over invoice? My dealer is saying $23.5k is what he wants for this car, but that's just under a TMV of $23,666. He's also having to order it from another dealer.

    Thanks.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
i have an 02 GLS Turbo. silver, Tiptronic, leather, luxury. i have the 15" alloys. bought in 10/01. the car is very quiet on the highway. and smooth and stable. my Civic always let me know i was going 80. the Jetta just starts waking up at 80, especially the little turbo motor.

i don't remember exactly, but i did not put any money down at all, even for tags or tax, and i financed for 60 months at 5.5% thru VW. $22k and change. i think i paid $195 over invoice. the silver wasn't that big of a deal. and the first dealer that had the car wouldn't deal, so i went to a different dealer and bought the same car, they just took the car from the other dealer. so, that the other dealer let the car go makes me think that silver isn't that in demand anymore.

i am in the dc area. hope that helps.

when i was shopping in November, the dealer i went to would not deal on a silver jetta--you had to pay MSRP. There are other nice colors (mine is green) that you can get a good deal on if your heart is not set on silver. my first civic (97) was "vogue metallic silver" which I had been wanting, but I got sick of it. it's kind of nice having a "color" as opposed to black or silver, which were the only colors I had before.
  • newjetta2newjetta2 Member Posts: 3
I paid about halfway between invoice and MSRP. No premium for silver. Prices are in $Cdn, so not very useful to you.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Every other Jetta I see on the street is silver. When the 99.5 models first came out, I did want the silver. I got white though (originally wanted Blue Lagoon), and I am glad I did. It hardly gets hot inside the car at all (and it's been 90 here the last 2 days), even with black leather. Also, I have only seen one other white Jetta with the 17" wheels like mine, and it was a GLX.

I paid $800 under MSRP in November, 2001 for my Jetta with SL Pkg., Leather, Tiptronic, and Monsoon.

Also, check out the various colors to see what you like the best. And don't pay more for silver either, fight them on it and/or walk.

black on black leather is an amzing setup for looks but man o man am I cooking right now, I got in my car after it had been parked in my schools lot for about 3 hours with all my windows a tad open and as soon I stepped in, I broke out into a heavy sweat. Temperature right now here in NYC area is about 95.
  • target3target3 Member Posts: 155
2002 1.8T manual with Sport Luxury, Monsoon, and Leather. Paid $600 under MSRP. I would have paid less for anything other than Silver. However, a manual with all the options was not widely available. You just have to decide what color you want and what it is worth to you. For me, an extra $200-300 was worth it, considering I plan on keeping this car a long time.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I used to have a black Protege with black cloth interior. That thing was like an inferno inside in the summertime. The AC would cool it eventually, but it would take a couple minutes to do so. I even got the windows tinted to make the interior cooler, which did not help alot but it did a little.

Not so with this white Jetta, even though it's leather and not cloth.
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
Seems like most of the MkIV Jettas I see around here are either silver or black. I see Red and White less frequently, and the blue colors I see least of all.

I chose red because silver tends to look gray in our lovely Seattle weather. It's beautiful on a sunny day, tho. :^)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I originally wanted the Blue Lagoon, but the dealer would have had to add the CD player in it, it didn't come with the 17" wheels (which grew on me), it didn't have the new style radio, and it would have taken a week to get the car in. I wanted the car that day, so I got Cool White. Most of the Jettas I see are either the Galatic Blue, red, or silver. White ones are always the ones with the hubcaps on them.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
because i saw a desert sand or mojave beige Jetta SEDAN this morning on the toll road. i was told it only came in the wagon. it looked GOOD. i would have loved that gold/beige color with black leather.

i saw a gold A4 the other day with BROWN leather. not beige, not tan, but BROWN. soooooo nice looking.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
I own the galactic blue and it does seem ubiquitous suddenly. When i got the car it was the first year of the blue and not many dotted the roads. Fast forward a year and it's everywhere. Silver still has the most uses though.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
It's Mohave Beige, and I didn't think it was available on the sedans either. Not that I care, because I don't really like it anyway.

And gold with brown leather? Yuck!

I saw the prettiest blue 2002 A4 on the road the other day with the Sport Package, and gray leather. Now THAT car was HOT!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
There were, at one time, 3 people here at my company of only 100 with that Galatic Blue color. That's another reason why I didn't want it. It's also the least attractive Jetta color, I think. Of course, the Bright Green is right up there. I would get it to be different, but think I would get tired of looking at it.
