I have my V1 installed per the DIY article at bmw330ci.com. This thing is great! It's probably already saved me from 1 ticket. However, I have not installed the remote diplay yet. I was curious if you ran the power cord to the remote display along the windshield side of the A pillar or the driver's-side window side? I'm not sure where the HPS airbag deploys from and don't want to get the cord in the way. I've seen the article linked in the E46 FAQ where the author ran it down the driver's-side window portion of the A pillar. Guess that's what I'll plan to do unless if you successfully used another approach. I like your idea of sticking the remote display to the aluminum trim rather than sticking it to the ledge below the instrument panel. Your approach would not obscure any information from the instrument panel. Is the Scotch mounting tape you used strong enough to keep it in place even after multiple presses of the Mute button? Thanks in advance for your input!!

The coin holder is supposed to be a snap-on but I don't trust myself enough to try and yank it out. I'm bringing my car in next week and that's one of the things the dealer will be replacing.
  • reubencahnreubencahn Member Posts: 102
I tucked it into the headliner and then routed it through the joint between the A pillar trim and the headliner over to the black weatherstripping trim on the window side of the A pillar. It tucks into the black strip perfectly. You can then run it under the dash. The tape I used is supposed to hold 2 lbs. We'll see how long it lasts.

I'm following your discussion with great interest. I bought my V1 two weeks ago and still have not had the time to pull it out of the packaging, read the instructions, and install it. Please keep us updated - I plan on doing this next weekend. Any chance for pictures of your setup, reuben? Thanks.

I am 95% sure it was Deep Green Bank. denright would know for sure.

Thought I should probably wax the Shtroumpf at some point - could you please post a list of all the Zaino exterior products that you recommend. I don't want to spend too much time waxing but I thought about it and I think it would protect better and cut down on exterior cleaning time in the future. Thanks. Oh, are these product good for an Audi A4 too?

Sounds good! I will plan on routing the cord as you describe. I'm holding off on installing the remote display until I receive my Universal Transmitter I recently ordered from Circle BMW. Figured I'd do them at the same time.

Brave - I can take some pics of my install, but it will probably be the weekend after next before I can get to installation of the remote display. I used the DIY article from bmw330ci.com to install the V1 itself. This was a great article and the install time was only about 30 minutes - a very easy job.

Just downloaded the instructions from bmw330ci.com. They seem very detailed and the pictures are pretty good. Wondering if the V1 would not be easily visible below the blue line of the windshield during the day, though.

While the inital treatment is a tad time consuming, I've found the on-going maintenance quite trivial. I basically just spray/wipe every couple days to keep clean. In fact, I spend more time on my weekly wheel/rim cleanup than keeping the rest of the car clean.

    Here's what I think you'll need

    Z1, Z2, Z5 (if you have ans swirls), Z6, Z7, Z16, Z18.

This will st you back about a hundred bucks.

Sal has some detailed instructions on getting started at:

Thanks for the steering update. I think I'll take the plunge, especially since I drove my honda over the weekend and it had tighter steering. But the retro will probably be a [non-permissible content removed] in my 4 level parking dech now that I am used to the lighter steering.
  • blaketagblaketag Member Posts: 24
The V1 isn't too noticeable when it's mounted right below the tint strip at the top of the windshield. However, you can definitely see it if you're looking for it. I've gotten in the habit of pulling down my sun visor when parking the car. This obscures it pretty well and then really all you can see from the outside is the suction cups on the mounting bracket.

I'd like to pass along one tip that helped me on my V1 install. I bought a 2 ft. gray phone cord (around $3.00) from Radio Shack to replace the 8 ft. black one that is supplied with the V1. This is to run between the Direct Wire Power Adapter and the V1. With the 2 ft. cord you don't have nearly as much wire to tuck into the upper console. Space up there is tight, so this made for a cleaner install! I'll use the 8 ft. black cord supplied with the unit to run between the power adpapter and the remote display. Also, if you haven't seen it here's a useful link showing an install of the remote display unit. Good luck!

I called BMWNA to confirm that the retro would include a 4 wheel alignment. THey told me it would not. This doesn't seem right. Many have said they got it. How can I get my dealer to do it without first waiting for a problem?
  • reubencahnreubencahn Member Posts: 102
Sorry, I can't really post any pics. I don't have a digital camera (hope to buy one soon). In any case, you couldn't really see anything. But the link Blaketag gave has good pictures. The only thing I did differently is to run the wire under the steering column and behind the clip that holds the plastic base beneath the column (this secures the wire) and then mount the unit below the instrument panel. The whole thing is more obvious in the doing than the telling.

As far as Zaino, you can get away without claying just wash with Dawn, apply Z1 and Z2. Even the z6 and z7 are optional, though worth the money.
  • kominskykominsky Member Posts: 850
In my case and, it seems, dantlo's case they did it by default. That would SEEM to go along with my service managers claim that it's called for in the service bulletin. Hopefully, whoever you talked to at BMWNA was mistaken. Have you called your service manager to see what their intentions are?

Does anyone know if the siemens fans are bad and are replacing it with bosch on the manual trans?

I have a step, and has bosch but not sure what the 2nd fan is. Seems both are working fine, just afraid one of the fan might be bad. Does anyone know why auto have 2 while manual have only one?

Guru, Yeeha, et al: I thought I posted a similar message yesterday but for some reason it did not take. I did not mean to be rude in delaying a response to your messages.

I think most of us on this board are pretty good at what we do and easily recognize a professional in another field. While I did not have a true professional sales rep, I am quite pleased for those whose experiences were better than mine. While some BMW dealerships obviously have work to do to catch up to Lexus and others, it does not seem to be a more universal type of problem.

Guru, you are correct about Nordstroms. I drive 2 hours to shop the nearest one in Indianapolis. One shoes sales rep was so excited about his award and factory visit to Allen Edmunds (or Trask, I cannot remember which) that he spent 20 minutes talking about the shoe's construction. His enthusiasm and professionalism helped him sell 3 pair of shoes when I intended only to purchase 2 pair.

To those considering the sport package, I advise you to have your wife and any small children be part of the test drive process. My 11 year old daughter, who when she was 8 told the Lexus sales rep "we'll take it" during the GS 300 test drive, is already on record as saying the car is "too firm over bumps Dad." I am fortunate this is our third car and a toy for me. If I had to share, I would pass on the sport package.

To those comparing the 3 series to a Lexus GS, know in advance that these are entirely different animals. I could not bear to part with the Lexus because of its plush, quiet, comfortable ride. The seats are the best made for me, I can drive 12 hours and arrive feeling great. The wife and daughter love the car. The fact that I still was unsatisfied and lusted after a 330i convinced me that one car cannot do it all for me. Shop smart, mistakes are expensive.

Other than achieving a shinier, mirror-like finish, how's Zaino better than carnauba wax on my 325i?
  • brave1heartbrave1heart Member Posts: 2,698
I sat in the back seat of my 325i SP over the weekend just to get a feel for what the rear-seat passengers are going through. An adult would be fine even on harsher surfaces. All body motions (vertical and horizontal) are incredibly well-controlled with the SP. A couple of times when we hit potholes, I felt sudden, short movements. It is actually exciting to sit even on the back seat of this car. The sound and road feel are unmistakably performance oriented even in the back seat. However, if I were to haul toddlers in my back seat, I think I'd definitely pass on the SP. The abrupt movements, short as they are, may be a little too unsettling for a toddler, especially on harsher surfaces. Your advice to take your family along and shop well is very wise.

How about the fact that it actually protects the paint? Wax doesn't really have a thinkness. It's main use is keeping the paint from oxidizing and keeping the paint shiny. It also doesn't last very long requiring it's reapplication, especially if you're in a warm climate. Zaino is a polymer and is very durable. In addition to protecting the paint from oxidation and making the paint shiny, it can also add an additional layer of physical protection (with enough coats).

i got this response on the e46 board.

since they're only replacing the steering rack, all they really need to do is re-adjust the "toe" setting. with a steering rack replacement, that's the only thing that get's moved around when the move your original tie rod ends over to the new steering rack (camber and caster are umaffecetd). the toe is set by adjusting the tie rod end's position on the threaded steering rack ends. this is a non-issue.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

what do you think? any regrets at all about the retro?

My son is a proud owner of a 325i.The dealer prep was excellent. However, the paint finish did not compare to my E320 after two Indiana winters. We cleaned his BMW with Dawn, clay barred it while still wet and soapy, rewashed, and applied Zaino Z1 and Z2.

The results are astounding. I also recommend claying annually. It really doesn't take much time and completely cleans the surfaces before waxing.

DSC stands for Dynamic Stability Control. It is part of the total BMW safety system that controls individual brakes and acceleration to limit understeer and oversteer in turns.

Check out http://www.bmwusa.com/welcome.cfm?code=Home, choose the "Joy of Driving -> Technology" along the gray title bar and then "Safety" in the blue bar under the picture. Other elements of BMW safety (All Season Traction, ABS) are listed there.

Got to thank you all for the links and suggestions for improving the range of the Universal Transmitter. These suggestions worked like a dream: the garage door opened from at least 40ft away whereas it would open from only 10 feet before re-programming.
Besides a new battery in the remote and holding the remote farther from the UT (hot end ~6 inches), I also programmed the UT with the engine off. Wow, what a difference!
  • reubencahnreubencahn Member Posts: 102
I don't mean to dissuade brave1heart or anyone else from using clay. I recommend the clay as well. I've just re-clayed after a year. It's easy and the results are great. It's not required in order to use Zaino, but it will give you the best possible results.

I got a call from the sales manager at my dealership. He told me my 330i, which was due at the dealers on either Friday or Saturday, is being held up at the VPC due to some "damage".

He will call me back tomorrow to let me know exactly what it is; he said it is usually a door scratch or bumper scuff. He also said the VPC said it should be ready and at the dealers by the end of the week.

Anyone been through this? What are my options? I am NOT pleased about this. I will be sure to get a VIR, but I don't want to wait FOREVER to get another car which is probably what would happen if I have to refuse delivery on this one.

First they screwed up my original order, which forced me from week 24 allocation to week 27, now this. I know this isn't the dealer's fault, but I have had just about enough for a $36 K + car.

Thanks in advance for any / all advice.

ok, now i'm worried!! after waiting over as couple months for my 330i, i was advised it had landed in new jersey on the 24th, yet has been delayed at vpc since then for no apparent reason. i wonder if i've got dings, scratches, etc!!!! mine is a steel grey/premium/black leather.

I think 7 days would be average for the number of days that pass between the boat docking and the truck leaving the trucking companies yard. Don't sweat! It should only just now be leaving for your dealer. Even another 4 days would still be "normal".
    Hope this helps!

Sorry to hear you have one of the bad fans. I thought your car was built in June. I'm a little worried that the recall will be extended yet again. Is the fan's manufacturer label viewable? I may check mine.
  • unboringuyunboringuy Member Posts: 90
mccerio, I'd wait and see what happens before getting all excited about things. Yes, it seems that everyone has to wait longer than expected for their new 3 Series (In my case, mid-January order, and ultimate delivery of second vehicle early July). But, things happen, and better to simply not worry about it and enjoy it when it arrives. Lots of minor things happen en route to the VPC. In fact, most of the time dealers don't even advise customers because the damage is so minor. I'm sure that BMW will fix it as good as new.

On the fan recall, I was interested to see that the number of vehicles once again has been increased. It looks like my 330xi is about 50 vehicles outside of the range. I sure hope that don't include it. Two overheated engines is about as much as I can take...after getting it back from the body shop, that is.
  • sabastian1sabastian1 Member Posts: 9
I am sorry to hear of the recall for E46 owners. Although, I must admit it warms my heart to know that this effects only those who own a car a year newer than mine. Serves you right:)

I have a two part question.

First, as I currently understand it, the service indicator system, combined with the brake pad warning light should alert me to excessive wear of the pad or rotor. Is this true and/or reliable? Anyone know the requirement specs for maintenance (i.e. pad thickness, etc.)?

Second, is there any resource avail, web site, etc, that provides maintenance information for those who choose not to service vehicles at BMW. My family mechanic services all our cars (foreign car specialist) and while I have complete confidence in his ability, I want to have peace of mind that all that should get done, is being done.

Thanks for the info. Long time no hear. I'm still tearing up the GSP. 110+. Try that in a Lexus! Without kids in the car of course.

Hi Guys. The 325i looks like a nice car, but I've got a couple questions. Is it roomier than my mkIV VW Jetta? Will the 184hp 6cyl be quicker than my 150hp 1.8l turbo? I'm guessing the 325 is quite a bit heavier than my VW.

VW service departments suck, and there are some real lemons out there, although most folks are happy with their VW. What is the scoop on BMW? Do dealers treat you poorly? Are service departments efficient and well-trained? Is the overall build quality much better than VW? Seems like I can get a 325i with Xenons, HK, leatherette and sport group for around $30k, does that seem about right?

Finally, does the sport-tronic AT eat much horsepower compared to 5-speed? Trying to decide if it's the way to go as I've always been a 5-speed fan.

    Thanks!

Your salesman should be able to tell you if there were any problems at the VPC. When I picked up my car, the salesman gave me a copy of some VPC data sheet (not sure what it's called but it says "Vehicle Inquiry - Production/Processing" at the top). On it there is a "VPC Disclosure" section which should either list problems encountered at the VPC, or be blank if no problems were found.
  • kominskykominsky Member Posts: 850
I looked (very closely) at the Jetta before buying my BMW (330Ci). Rear seat room in the BMW is definetly better. In the front, I remember feeling kind of pinched in the Jetta. I'm not entirely sure, but I believe it is noticably narrower than the 3-series.

As far as performance goes, I would think that you'd knock around a full second off of 0-60 times with a 5spd BMW. This is based on VW's claim of 0-60 in 8 seconds for the 1.8t GTI 5spd (only thing I could find numbers for quickly). This is assuming, of course, that you don't have your Jetta chipped.

I, personally, have been thrilled with the performance of both my dealership's sales staff and service depts. Others haven't been so lucky.

Nice tag. Is the car blue too?

I second Kominsky's comments and would add that when we were looking at the VW my wife commented that, for the money, VW's lack some of the nicer touches that BMW simply nails(i.e. dual lighted vanity mirrors, cockpit design, climate control).

I do not think VW has an on-board computer which comes in handy for long trips and "neato" effect.

Went for the Bimmer and have not looked back (except to see the rest in my dust).

Dishsoap is not recommended to wash your car. It's too harsh on your clearcoat and on your car's finish.

won't do anything to the clearcoat itself. But it will strip all the wax off the paint leaving the clearcoat unprotected from bird droppings, acid rain, UV etc. Actually, Zaino recommends using it to strip wax before the first application of Zaino coatings.

Back in June, I placed an order for a 2001, BMW 325 with the local dealership. Delivery date on the contract was first week in September. I just got a call from the dealership and was told that it(the dealership) was sold to International Motors in Milwaukee WI and that the car was expected to arrive at that dealership next week. Shocking news; I can only speculate as to why. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited. To verify, how can I check the production status?? I went to BMWNA but found no link. Could someone help??
  • kominskykominsky Member Posts: 850
If you have a production number or VIN, go to BMWNA's site and enter Owner's Circle. When you sign up, you will be able to track your car's progress. Unfortunately, it's not overly accurate. If you don't have the VIN, your salesman should be able to provide it for you.

Another option, around here, would be to ask 'gurumike' (a regular poster in this 'hall') to check it for you. I think he's still helping out when possible.

I have a '97 Jetta VR6 and a '01 325. This is the fastest Jetta ever made - 0-60 in 6.9 sec. It's actually faster than the current VR6 because it is about 200 lbs lighter. The VR6 was a little faster off the start at first but now that the 325i is fully broken in, it is on par acceleration-wise off the start and wins hands-down in the top end. This is the fastest Jetta I'm talking about, forget the 1.8T motor. We have that in the A4 1.8T Q and I love that engine but it's not a VR6. Other than acceleration and a great trip computer, there is nothing else that comes close to the 325. You need to drive the 325i SP manual to see for yourself the difference in handling, road feel, braking, and most of all - inspiration. I almost scared myself to death a couple of times in the VR6 after I got used to the 325. The faster you go, the bigger the difference. The 325 is just as composed in triple-digit speed as it is at 60 mph. Trust me, there is no comparison - it's like going from the stone age into modern capitalism. Same goes for the dealerships and the overall ownership experience. Mine came to 31.5 grand and it has everything that I wanted: SP, xenons, heated seats, H-K, CD and more. The 325i manual is a full second faster than the automatic. Add to this the best manual tranny I've ever seen and you must be crazy not to get the manual, assuming you are proficient with manuals.

    P.S.
Forgot to mention that the 325 is substantially roomier - longer, wider, and it has a real rear seat. The front headroom in the Jetta is also great, as is all-around visibility, but the driving position and controls are a lot better in the 325.

am thinking about swapping out of 99 TL to a bmw 330. i know it isn't as large -but concerns are more about reliability. The TL has been great in that regard -- if not the most exciting vehicle to own...
  • jrct9454jrct9454 Member Posts: 2,363
While anxieties in this area are understandable, I can assure you that if you hadn't been informed of any damage in advance, there is absolutely no way you would find it when the car is delivered. Outside of the factories themselves, the VPCs have the most sophisticated paint facilities going, and it just shouldn't be a concern. You could refuse delivery, go through the whole bloody order process again, and the next car could get nicked as well...relax and forget it...

As for the question of TL reliability vs BMW 3er, we have had a lot of lively discussions about this, often involving people without extensive experience with both Honda and BMW. I've had 6 Honda products, 4 BMWs, 14 Toyotas, and 13 Mercedes in the family over the past 33 years, and there is no point in arguing with me that the Germans can touch the Japanese for long-term reliability and [RELATIVELY] lower costs over the very long term [say 100k miles and up]. But for any given new car over its first five years, it's always a throw of the dice - get a good one, and you will think you're a genius; get something else, and you'll wonder where these guys got their great reputation. It's always the luck of the draw; once you get out over 5 years, then the longer-term issues all fall on the side of the Japanese, both in absolute number of things gone wrong and what it will cost to fix them. Depends entirely on what you want...

Merci! I went to BMWNA'S Owners Circle and with a production number, and, indeed, was able to find out the status of my new car. It's at the Performance Center. I'll check in a few days to see if there's any change. I think this site, in terms of getting accurate, helpful information is THE ULTIMATE INFO. MACHINE. Kudos to edmonds.com and members.

    jrct9454,

Sounds like you have a better database than most to make your long term reliability assessment on.

However, I also find it interesting that in checking the used car classifieds in the Washington Post, I have noticed a relatively large volume of Mercedes and BMW's 10+ years old with 120k-150k+ miles. It's not uncommon to find late 80's or early 90's S-class or E-Class cars still selling for $10k to $20k+. The relative number of older Japanese cars listed for anything over about $3k is limited.

P.S. I do feel like a genious - I have a 95 Maxima that has had virtually 0 unscheduled maintenance costs over 111,500 miles. Unfortunately, my previous Acura made me feel like a dope - killed me before it hit 100k. Now I'm considering an M or AMG car and wondering which side of the lucky draw I'll fall on.
