I just bite the bullet and purchased a Grey/Green 325i: Step; Xenons; PP; HK; Folding Rear Seats; Grey Leather. I was looking for Steel Blue, but they had this one on the lot, equiped the way I wanted, and were willing to deal. I pick it up tomorrow evening.

I have two questions: they are offering a fourth year of full-service for $875, and an extended warranty for 7-years/100k miles for $2,200. The fourth year doesn't sound too out-of-line, but the extended warranty sounds really high. It's supposedly with a German insurance company that all BMW centers accept. I offered $1,100 but they wouldn't budge. I declined both, but can change my mind. Has anyone considered these?

Thanks, I'm looking forward to being part of the happy BMW owners here.

Thanks, 1pierce and butmywife, for the reassuring words about the liveliness of a 3er sans SP. I'm getting ready to love this car (especially as I am currently driving a 1989 *Mazda* 323, the third in a succession of cars that begins with a '78 Mazda 626 (first model year and the best car we've ever owned), an '86 Subaru wagon, the 323, and a Toyota Sienna minivan (the compromises of having kids).

Topaz blue was my first choice of color. My wife and 2 daughters, however, had other preferences. Titanium silver worked out to be the consensus (and, remember, I will have the car after all, so the color compromise seems a sensible concession.) But I have seen a couple of topaz blues around and must say it is a beautiful color: it has dignity and flair, and stands out from all those silver cars running around. Go Blue!

I have a Topaz Coupe and get tons of compliments on the color. It does show dirt but probably not as bad as black and orient blue. If you want, drop me an email at kominsky@agere.com and I'll send you a couple of pics I have of another guys topaz sedan.

There is a term "topaz curse" on bimmer.org. Apparently some unfathomable bad lucks have happened to some of topaz e46s (more often and odd than other colors). Maybe it is similar to the common reality that rumors/trashes tend to always go around pretty women :-> You may prove "topaz curse" is totally nonsense.

Does anypne have the option number for rear shade for e46? Considering it instead of tinting. How much is it here in US and how much in Germany? TIA.

    Hi-

    Hope this helps.

    Option Code 0415
    MSRP $300

I think it's a great option. Only offered in the 330. Also, a very expensive option if it's after your car is built, since they have to install, versus ordering it during your car's production. If you already have your car, it may go into the thousands.

rshaw1655... What is the name of the insurance company offering the extended warranty? And you need to pore over all the details. Terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions. How close to bumper-to-bumper is it? Or is it mainly just powertrain? Is there a deductible? If so, how much and how applied? What does it say in the contract about where you can get service? Can you take it to any BMW dealer? And will they use new original BMW replacement parts? How do they pay you or the dealer off?

Without this info, impossible to say if good deal or not. Gives you an extra 3 years and 50,000 miles but not sure on what. However, extended warranties on luxury cars usually aren't cheap. If this is a good warranty from a good established insurance company, then $2,200 might not be bad.

As for the 1 year extended maintenance, think I've seen a lot of posters here purchase this for around or slightly under $500. The price they are offering ($875) seems high.

We went with gray green as a sort of alternative to silver (our Accord is silver). I don't think of the Topaz as a "look at me" color. To me, the only color that BMW makes the 3series in that would qualify would be the red and maybe the white. In my case, I wanted a light interior/exterior because of our Texas heat.
  • derprofiderprofi Member Posts: 250
What kind of a deal did you get on your car? If they've already sold you the car, they have no real incentive to give you a break on the extended warranty. Ideally, you would be able to hold back the purchase if they don't cut you a better deal, but if you've already signed the papers then you're out of luck.

I'm from Pgh too (McCandless) and I bought my new 325i from New Motors in Erie. Paid $1,500 over invoice (approximately $850 off of MSRP--BTW, $1200 over invoice is [slightly] "less," not "more," agressive than $1,200 under MSRP!).

When I was looking, I e-mailed every dealer in PA with an e-mail address on their web-site and made them the $1,500 over invoice offer. Two accepted without any hitches. New Motors in Erie was first. Another dealer out east (Mechanicsburg?) accepted a few days later. Because I lived in Erie for a few years and because it's an easy two-hour (at the speed limit) drive up 79, it was a no brainer. However, because they accepted so fast--within 12 hours--I couldn't help thinking that they might have gone for $1,200 or $1,300 over invoice. Oh well. BTW, they threw in the floor mats too. E-mail Tom Hoida if you're interested.

After New Motors accepted, I went back to Sewickley and asked them if they would do the deal for approximately $100 less than New Motors would (nice round number). After checking with the sales manager (of course!) and calling me back, the salesman there said the best they could do was about $300 more than I would pay in Erie. You already know what I did.

Here's a tip, if you do end up buying from New Motors in Erie, after picking your new baby up, come back 19 instead of 79; it's a hoot!

I ordered topaz on my 325Ci (which should arrive at my dealer today or tomorrow - I'm ignoring the post about the topaz curse). It is definately more rare than your standard silver or black - first time I saw topaz was on a '00 (I think) sedan with SP (sharp wheels) and gray leather - it was stunning. Caught my eye much more than most sedans (I'm generally not a big fan of sedans). I ordered my coupe with the gray leather and no SP, because the standard wheels on the 325Ci are, in my opinion, the nicest looking wheels available on any 3 series besides the M wheels. By this time tomorrow (or the next day) I may have my new car!

wrjohn: I am currently working with Three Rivers in the South Hills and P&W in East Liberty. Did you have any face-to-face contact with either of them? I am not sure I want to go to Erie for a new car, but I might. My brother's dealership in Youngstown, OH is also a possibility. Thanks for the info. I may just send your salesman an e-mail. I must admit, I have never even computed the invoice cost of this car - didn't think I could get anywhere near it, so I didn't think it was relevant.

To all you guys with Topaz Coupes (or any color coupes for that matter), all I can say is "Must be nice!" How I lament the passing of my coupe days.

Has anyone else experienced a vibrating noise in the rear wheels of their 325xi? It comes when ever you accelerate on high speed. I purchased a new 2002 Orient Blue 325 xi in Feb and now the dealers have it again going on the 3rd week. They've purchased expensive equipment, invited an engineer, called on a "vibrator analyst" and have had little or no success in understanding the source of this misery.

    Waiting anxiously for your response.

I love the black & dark blue, they're gorgeous. But I wanted a lighter color. I love bright color too, but I don't like that particular red on 325i plus I have a red car now. Have not had a problem with cops, but I think it'd be more likely with a BMW. I considered the Topaz for myself, but went with steel blue in the end. There are alot of bimmers out there, but I don't see too many Topaz, do see lots of silvers & whites & darks. White looks sharp too, but it's not for me!
  • wrjohnsonpghpawrjohnsonpghpa Member Posts: 53
No, I did not have any face-to-face contact with anyone at Three Rivers or P&W (btw, have heard terrible things about P&W service), perhaps you can do better there. Either they didn't respond to my e-mail offer, or they didn't have a web-site e-mail address. Erie's really not a bad drive; I didn't even hesitate, but perhaps that's because I once lived there and currently live in the north (of Pgh), so it doesn't seem quite so far for me. What I really liked is that they accepted my offer as it was ($1,500 over invoice) with no attempt to add on any MACO, prep, etc. and didn't even try to sell me an extended warranty. And as I already said, they threw in the floor mats (as all dealers should!). Really, no hassle! Very refreshing. (Btw, I tried the Sam's club and COSTCO programs too, they couldn't do any better--actually worse--weren't very attentive and I would have had to have gone to Cleveland or Philly.)

Re. topaz blue, great color, go for it (if you can overlook the curse--LOL)! ( Mine's steel blue; second choice was steel gray [grey?]--hey, I'm from Pgh, it's gotta be "steel" something.)

Drove to Sears Point early yesterday to watch Am. Le Mans series. As I near the raceway, it starts to pour. Who ever heard of rain in NoCal in May?! I could have paid $35 to get soaked, or turn around and drive home.

Did get to have little fun with a 911 though. We were both stopped at a red light near the raceway. As soon as the light turned green, we both took off, or tried to anyway (tough to really take off on wet roads). I like the sound of the I6 under my hood, but nothing quite compares to the sound of the boxer engine in a 911.

Nina, I too have experienced a vibration on my xi. However, mine is only when crusing at about 65 mph or so and I'm pushing just under 3,000 rpm. I suspect it is a tire issue and will have my dealer look at it on Wednesday. I'm thinking just a tire rotation. I'm not sure I'll get the same kinds of tires when the originals are worn, but have some ideas based on comments here.

I haven't had any vibrations while accelerating.

    -Paul

PS Found some nice twisties by my house this weekend. Damn, wish I was driving my xi at the time. :) But the Civic Si held its own.

A while back a link was posted that showed the percentage figures for the various colors. I don't have the link anymore, but my general impression was that it went something like this (approximately):

    Silver - 40%
    Black - 20
    White - 10%

The other 8 colors comprised the remaining 30%. So when I said that Topaz blue "wasn't too rare", I did so with that less than 4% average in mind. Most days I don't see one.

BMW brought a topaz blue 325CI to the last Ultimate Drive i went to. Thought it looked great on the coupe, however ive never seen it on the sedan?

Postoak:Classic in Richardson has almost the exact #'s you post on the lot. There was like 1 sapphire black, and maybe one red.

I happen to own the "too common " T Silver, as someone posted. But it cant be beaten for looking good 100% of the time and then thers that Texas heat issue...;)

I just purchased a 2000 323 that did not have a factory installed CD so I bought a Pioneer disk changer and controller module that mounts in the the trunk. On the trunk door, it states that it is pre-wired for a disk changer but I could not find the cable anywhere in the trunk. Does anyone know where this cable is located or a web site that has the service manual or wiring diagram for this. Thanks.

We have been house hunting in New Hampshire since Friday, so, I missed lots of posts...

Regarding ordering a car and discounts: There was some speculation around here that dealerships were more than willing to give discounts that were at least a good as the ones for "In Stock" cars. The reason is that (in theory at least) the dealership moves the car almost as soon as it hits their lot, thus minimizing the inventory cost of said car to a bare minimum.

In my case, I walked into a dealership back in 1998 to order my 1999 328i, and the salesman told me that "The price was the price, regardless of special order or stock". By that he meant that the "Price" was the price he quoted me, which worked out to about $1,775 below MSRP. I ordered my car (1999 328i, Metallic, HK, In-Dash CD, Xenon, PP), which because of 5-Speed and lack of SP, or PP and lack of Automatic, made this car fairly atypical for a car ordered for stock by a dealership.

Regarding Topaz Blue: I have seen several, and I like them. If you like it, order it, and to Hell with what anybody else thinks. ;-)

DL7265: What color is the, ummm, errr, car (I use the term loosely) that you drive for, ummm, errr, work? I hope for your sake, it is white. ;-)

    Best Regards,
    Shipo

I too had to give up two-doors (during the car-seat days) for awhile, but now my kids are 8yrs and 10yrs so they're big enough to crawl in the back themselves and small enough to not mind doing it.

I have a 2002 325xi wagon. It doesn't vibrate at high speed or when accelerating at high speed. In fact, it rides much better (quieter and smoother) on the highway than in short trips.

Because I have benefited from other posters who have discussed installing various things such as these, I thought I would share me experiences of this past weekend. Maybe someone will benefit.

This past weekend I installed 1) chrome exhaust tips (part #82-12-9-410-926), 2) a front license plate bracket replacement molding strip (#51-11-7-030-611), and 3) a leatherette center armrest. All were purchased from Pacific BMW where I had also purchased a universal transceiver (garage door opener) which I had also planned to install last weekend, but the kit that they sent me included a wrong face plate for my car, which doesn't have a sunroof (hard to believe I know, but there are a few out there). Onward...

Chrome exhaust tips - these are a must have. They look fantastic. You have to hammer them on, though. Use a rubber mallet or, as I did, put an old rag folded a bunch of times behind them and hammer on that. No damage was done. They're also held on by a screw underneath--probably completely unnecessary.

Front license plate bracket replacement molding strip - this is a hugh disappointment! Not difficult to install (although I did nick my molding a bit getting the front license plate bracket off) but the part doesn't span the gap left when the license plate bracket is removed! When centered, there's a gap of about 1/4" between the old moldings on the left and right side of the front bumper and the replacement molding strip. I was told by Circle BMW that there wasn't a replacement strip that fit right, but others told me that there was a new strip for cars built after 9/1/01. I have the new one but it still doesn't fit right. For $12 (I think) it still looks better than the unnecessary front license plate bracket. Not very noticeable from a distance, but just not right anyway.

Center armrest - This too is a must have. IMHO the PP wasn't worth $2,700(?) to get the armrest. (The brushed titanium trim looks great with my black leatherette interior, too. Very sporty!). Paid $128.04 from Pacific (plus shippling, but no tax). Having it makes a big difference in driving comfort. Installation wasn't all that difficult except for bolting the armrest to the console. These bolts have very fine threads and are very stiff to tighted. The real problem, however, was that, except for the rear one, they go in at very odd angles, no doubt different on each car. It took me an hour to fiqure this out. I had visions of having to have my retired machinist father drill out the holes and re-tap them. But, alas, I was able finally to get them started and then tightened.

    Hope this helps somebody.

It was super clean because I had just picked it up. OTOH, it's considerably dirtier right now. There's brake dust galore on the rims, which I don't mind too much. It adds character to the car, IMO. A year ago I saw a Porshe with so much built up brake dust that the rims were almost completely black.

Hi all. Today I became the proud owner of a brand spankin' new Alpine white 325i with sand leather, PP, Step. and Xenon. I'm so excited. I think I woke up this morning with a goofy grin on my face in anticipation of picking the car up at lunchtime.

I want to thank everyone on this board for all of the wonderful advice. Though I haven't posted many questions, I have been reading this board for quite some time.

The only problem that I see with owning this car is fighting my husband over who gets to drive it when we go out as a family. Since the car is mine and I will have the pleasure of driving everday, I guess I will have to let him have a little fun driving every once in a while.

I look forward to reading this board even more, now that I am an actual owner. Keep all of the good advice coming. Have a great day everyone. Kim

On the exhaust tips: Is your exhaust pipes round? I purchased some black exhaust tips, only to find that my exhaust pipes are rectangular! I was thinkins something is wrong on my car. I checked the brochure and the 2002 325i shows round exhausts. I'm confused. I hope this is not some ED trick.

Congratulations on the new addition to the family fleet. In my household, a good rule of thumb is if my wife's key battery has lost it's charge (and forgotten her person seat settings) then I owe her some quality driving time. Or at least long enough to recharge her key battery...

Are there different part numbers for the exhaust tips depending on the model/year? I have a 2002 325i and I want to get the chrome tips.

I also have been looking for the front license plate bracket replacement strip. Could you post a picture of what it looks like with the gap?

    Thanks!

Dale: well, car is white sans fenders and trunk lid, and im sure you can guess that color :)

Ultimate Drive: i just checked the schedual and do not see any dates, does anyone know if they have been canceled ? ive enjoyed going the last 3 years, especially when our group wins the relay race.

I purchased an after market 6 CD changer for my E36 '95 325i. I called all over town for this because apparently the '95s had a unique cable and the adapter is very hard to come by. I found a local audio store though that was able to figure it out and they were the only one's in Houston that could -- to my surprise.

The cable is difficult to find. I could not find it and they had to take most of the panels out of the trunk before getting to it. It should be on the left somewhere. It is sortof a hassle. I was glad to give them a $100 to install the thing.

This is about what I paid:
    $400 for a pioneer 6 CD changer
    $75 intallation
    $50 for the cable adapter

I love the thing. It interfaces perfectly with my head unit in the car and from inside you cannot tell that it is not a BMW installed option. The dealers wanted $900 to put one in my car -- $595 for the unit and another $300 to install it.

So if any of you all are in Houston and are looking to do the same thing, call All Star Audio Video at 7134648203. They knew tons about BMWs.

Thanks for the pics. Topaz Blue has just nudged into the lead, slightly ahead of Electric Red on my color selector chart. It really down plays the black strips, which I like. Because you have the 330, you have more chrome than I will have. I think that adds just a little spice to the look of the car. Figures, everything I like costs extra money. Must have the upgraded stereo. Must have the upgraded paint. Must have the upgraded headlights, and so on, and so on....

I like silver and white, too. Its just that everybody has silver, and we already have one white car in our house, which I do love, but its not really a color. The dark colors are awesome, especially orient blue, but they're just sooooo high maintenance and I think the AC works much better in light color cars. Plus, I'm getting black interior, so every little bit of heat mitigation helps.

PS: I'd hate to clean your rims (did have lace-type rims once, so I know your pain). I don't think brake dust adds character to the car - it just adds dirt, and Porsches are the worst for it. I actually think the rims on the base 325i are beautiful (the brochure doesn't do them justice). They are a brighter silver, which I will need to accent the Topaz Blue!
  • 1pierce1pierce Member Posts: 284
Can the car be special ordered without the front license plate bracket? Its not necessary in PA, and I think adding the pewter plate with the raised BMW logo (which everybody here seems to get, and I'm sure I'll end up getting also) is redundant.
  • 1pierce1pierce Member Posts: 284
I think I posted this before, but I had a bright red Grand Prix GTA with ground effects and gold lace wheels for 7 years. I was pulled over by the police (state and local) four times in that car for speeding, and once for not wearing my seat belt. I was let go without a ticket every time.

I've had my very dark green Maxima for 3-1/2 years and been pulled over twice (once for speeding and once for expired inspection (that was the year PA decided to realign inspection with registration and not with the month you bought your car - Oh, and they never bothered to tell us). Both times I got the ticket. So, go figure!
  • kominskykominsky Member Posts: 850
The car comes with the front plate mounting bracket, but it isn't installed from the factory. Seeing all of the cars on the lot with dealership logo plates on the front, I asked my salesman to be sure the bracket wasn't put on my car (I'm in PA too). He had no problem with that.

BTW, I'm still trying to find a body colored Euro-plate bracket for the front of my coupe (like the one pictured in the Coupe brochure). Maybe one of our newer posters can help me find one... anyone?

Well, the ED was just about as all of you here have described it...fun and exhilarating. The only complication was that I ended up dropping and picking up the car on the same day (friday) due to a local holiday on monday. With my flight arrangements and work committments, I just couldn't get around this unfortunately. Now i can experience the pain of waiting for the car to arrive here in the US. A few obvervations:

    1. Apparently ED is really picking up in popularity. The day i was there the BMW worker showing me my car told me 120 people were scheudled to pick up that day. I asked if it was just like that because of the weekend and he said it is like that almost every day...

    2. Zurich is something that should be on the schedule of anyone doing ED if at all possible. Even if you don't drive there, it's only a 4 hour train ride and well worth a day trip. It is much smaller than munich, but still has great ped. areas with bars and restaurants and fabulous scenery. It is a very wealthy town and has great shopping if that is what you're into.

    3. My color combination of steel blue and tan looked even better in person. I'm suprised more people don't consider this over silver.

    4. Finally, I have a bunch of pictures and will try to scan and post if possible. If anyone considering ED has any questions, let me know and I'll try to answer.

seivwrig - Re. the shape of my tail pipes, they're oval, at least they are now after I hammered on the oval chrome tail pipe tips (maybe they were round before, but I don't think so).

chewie5 - Re. part numbers for chrome exhaust pipe tips, I believe there are different part numbers for different model years. When I ordered them from Pacific BMW they asked me for the year and model of my car. Re. a picture of the gap in the front molding, I don't have one at present, unfortunately. I'll see if I can borrow a digital camera from some one and take one. I'll probably then need some help posting it here. I'll see what I can do.

dl7265 - I'll bet an 'ette arm rest would match up pretty well with leather but I think it's only about $25 dollars more for the leather. If I paid $1,500 for leather interior, I'd go with the leather arm rest.

1pierce - I believe all BMWs come with the front license plate bracket. I've heard of others, though, asking their dealer to replace it before they took delivery. That's what I should have done, but I think I would still have the gaps because I think there's a problem with the part. I agree that the roundel logo stainless steel license plate is redundant and I don't want it either (it's also about $30!).

kominsky - I see that you have a 2001, is there any gap in your front license plate bracket replacement molding strip? I think the problem is unique to the '02s.

More on the front license plate bracket replacement molding strip, I held it up with the front license plate bracket and they appeared to be exactly the same length (width?). I don't honestly remember if there was a gap in the molding when the bracket was on. I don't want to put it back on just to find out because I think the more you take those things off and put them back on again, the looser they get. I think I would have noticed, though, if the gap was as big as it is now.

Thanks leenelsonmd. I looked mostly to the right side where the battery cables are. The panels on the left side look to be more permanent so I did not want to damage them. I will take another look this evening but I will probably end up getting it done at the import dealer. Thanks for the advise from Houston. I am in Cedar Rapids, IA.

The Pioneer 6 CD changer cost $220 and the cable adaptor cost $120 so after installation, the total cost will around the $400 mark. I also wish that the stereo had better speakers. The standard speakers tend to be weak in dynamic range at the bass level. However, I don't think that I am brave enough to start cracking open the doors and installing speakers.

I'm fairly certain I want to purchase a 325xi. I'm going to order it late summer at the earliest, so I'm planning to wait for the 2003 models.

    Likely configuration:
325xi, 5 speed, xenons, PP, CWP

I live in the NE and this will be my only car, which is why I'm leaning towards the x. Any opinions on how the 325xi drives vs. the 325i would be appreciated. How reliable is BMW's all wheel drive system? Are the xenons worth the extra $700?

Picked up my 325Ci last night. Topaz blue/gray leather, moonroof, no other options. The color combination with the standard 325Ci wheels turned out just beautiful. I haven't driven a stick shift in about 5 years so a bit rusty there but looking forward to lots of practice. What a great car. Will post pics once I get them taken.

to all the new owners who've posted about picking their cars up in the last couple of days!

120 people per day doing ED! That's incredible! Is it just Americans or can anybody pickup their car at the BMW delivery center in Munich?

Sunnybrook: I think we're around the same age (Mid 20's) and I was wondering what expenses you incurred while doing your Ed trip. I just bought another car instead of doing ED this fall (due to budgetary constraints) which I couldn't be happier with. Thanks!

the trick to not nicking your bumper or trim is to pull off approx 3"-5" of the bumper trim to the left and right of the center piece (the sides tuck under the center piece) - all pieces are snap-on. You can then get your finger or a screwdriver under the center piece from the side without nicking the bumper. Unfortunately, I figured this out after marring my bumper as well :(

I also have a 1/4" gap on either side of the center piece, but you get used to it. It was explained to me by BMWNA (I called to confirm that I got the correct post 9/01 part) that this was designed so that the piece could be easily removed without damaging the surrounding trim.

So, you really hate the gap? Maybe I should just live with the bracket and the roundel license plate. I think my brother paid about $40.00 for it. I'm a little worried about ordering the car without it on, and seeing the gap.

Billiam70: Great car. If I go Topaz, mine will be a 325i w/out SP, so it won't have the chrome trim or the M wheels.

It's my understanding that anyone in Europe can also pick up their car there. Based on my unscientific method of listening in on the language spoken by other customers when I was there in November, I'd guess that maybe 20% of the folks doing pickups are Americans.

There is no break in the bumper trim on my car, but that may be unique to the coupes. I'm pretty sure that the '01 sedans had the 3-piece trim on the front bumper. I guess to put a front plate on the coupe, they have to drill holes... yikes!
