S.A. built cars - I don't have any experience with S.A. built cars but my Munich-built 325i has had a few problems as well. No car is perfect but I'm confident that S.A. built cars are assembled to the same standards as those assembled in Germany (a large % of which are assembled by non-German workers anyhow).

PeopleFirst - We financed our A4 through them and I've had a 10 out of 10 experience with them. The on-line application was approved in a few minutes and paperwork was at a minimum. There is no charge for setting up an electronic debit or any prepayment penalties. You can track your account on-line, obtain payoff quotes, etc. Their rates were the best we could find outside of manufacturer-subsidized rates and HELOC of course.

Acura TL-S 6 speed - The comparo was interesting. I was surprised to find out that C&D rated the Acura's engine AND tranny higher than the BMW's. They rated the 330 3 points higher on looks and if it wasn't for those 3 points, the Acura would have won. At the same time, though, you can feel that the writers still love the 3-series more than the Acura.

Tires - I ordered a set of Sumitomo HTRZ II's from the Tirerack to replace my Contis. The rears are down to the wear bars at 21K miles with 3 autocross events, one driving school, and pushing the limits of the car almost every day. The sales tax savings almost offset the shipping charges, not to mention that their prices are at least 20% lower than any discount tire store. The Sumi's are $106 each, just a tad more expensive than the Kumho's. I noticed a couple of the M3's had Kumho's at the autoX yesterday and the Sumi's are not nearly as popular so I guess I am taking a risk with them.

Well, the King, I mean the Board is dead. Long live the Board!! Is everyone up watching soccer all night and sleeping during the day?

Just an FYI--the DRL's don't use the xenon's, they use the other set of lights which are halogen.

Since my job comes before soccer, I watch the 6:30 am matches and sometimes i have to watch them in Spanish due to ABC/ESPN's delayed coverage on weekends. England has actually fielded a decent squad for once. If they play the long ball against Brazil, they could do well. The U.S. could actually beat Germany(not BMWs). The U.S. needs to be agressive early and take Janicke(sp?) out of the match are at least make him earn his supper. Germany was a slow defence. At this point, The U.S. needs to take advantage of God's grace and mercy because they should have gone back to California. Thank God for S. Korea.

On the colour subject, Jet Black is fine if you love washing your car. 6000 miles and no probs but I don't think my alarm was programmed correctly. I still need to get my autobahn souvenir fixed(two rock chips on the bonnet).

I belive that 3) and 4) of your problems are consistent for all 3 er's regardless of birth place. I have tried to make the window feature work with the loaners as well and it is inconsistent.

    1) What does the dealer say about this one?? My truck has this issue without any resolution. Is there a fix?

    2) Are you sure you are not fat-fingering the steering controls?

I recently purchased a BMW 325i, and I am very upset at the car salesman because I feel he cheated me. Whenever someone asks me how much I paid for my car, the response is always the same--you got cheated!! Above all, I assumed the car came standard with an alarm. When I picked up the car I was told that an alarm would run me an additional $600, and that alarms only come standard on the 500 series. Is this true?
Please let me know if you've had a similar experience, or know whether alarms are considered standard equipment. Thanks!

Just wondering if anyone has heard about ay changes or refinements for 2003. I will be ordering and it might be beneficial to wait.. Also saw the steel blue metallic today with a black top and light grey leather. It was gorgeous and think would be even more awesome with the blue top.

I am looking to purchase a new 330i with auto/sport and premium packages. Are there any really hungry and aggressive dealers out here. The best deal I have been offered is 1500 over invoice. Im looking for better especially this late in the model year. Any suggestions ?
  • tenet1tenet1 Member Posts: 354
Why do you feel that way?? It is hard to tell if you got ripped off until you provide us the type of options you got and how much you paid vs. MSRP.

The alarm is not standard in the 3 series. It is pre-wired for it. Most dealers will probably charge about the same amount of money for the alarm (installation included).
  • tenet1tenet1 Member Posts: 354
BMW's dont come down in price as the model year progresses, as demand barely varies. I have one of the last few 2001's that were ordered simply because I love the look pre-nose job. However, I was unable to get a "great" deal based on that.

$1500 over invoice is a pretty good deal.
  • kyyuankyyuan Member Posts: 12
Thanks for responding to my question. My application with peoplefirst.com was actually just approved with a pretty low rate--it was a painless process.

Now, does anyone know about "Cinnamon red" leather for the 3-series?

  • seivwrigseivwrig Member Posts: 388
    Jeffk9:
$1500 over invoice. You did well. You will not get that in Houston or Dallas. The 3er sedan was changed for MY 2002, so 2003 probably will not any different, hence $1500 but you can probably get that on a 2003. Also, you don't have to buy the 2002 because someone else will and at full MSRP.
    Nagad:
Like tenet1 said, the 3er is prewired for the alarm. I'm an engineer not a technician and I was able to install the alarm and CD changer. With the BMW, these installations are not rocket science. Each installation took about one hour. With the alarm, you still need to take it to the dealer to be initialized. Buy the alarm from a dealership Passport BMW, Circle BMW or Pacific BMW. They sell the alarm for about $225 (most dealers charge $300). The dealer will charge for about 2 hours on the installation (about $150-$200) for a one hour job. If you paid more than MSRP on your Bimmer, you got ripped. But you will not care after 2000 miles or so. The more you drive the more irrelevent the price become. I did not get a deal(only $700 off ED MSRP) like a good number of the individuals on this thread but I feel the car is worth the money. Happy Motoring.

I tried out PeopleFirst.com just for fun one day after stumbling across them from bankrate.com. I had fully intended to use my credit union as I had done before. Filled out the PF application just for fun. Received my approval call in ten minutes! Check in two days. Awesome. Four months later when I was finally serious about buying a car, I did it again. Approval call in 10 minutes. Check in two days. A little later I wanted to up the amount of my check. Went into my PeopleFirst account. Requested a 10% increase and was instantly approved. Received the new check two days later. From my experience, they seriously have their act together. I did, though, about a week before picking up my car, let the dealer know I planned to finance via PeopleFirst. He hemmed and hawed, said he had done a couple PeopleFirst transactions before and they were a little tricky. Called me back next day saying there was no problem. Picked up my car. He had the contract all filled out with PF info. The nice finance lady came over just to make sure I filled out the check correctly, she commented how easy PeopleFirst transactions are and that was that. Begin silly grin.
  • soverypoornowsoverypoornow Member Posts: 74
Oh, and the rate was at least a half point lower than everyone else including BMW (VKwheels, how did you do that?). Also, I wanted to reward PF for being just so darned easy to work with.
  • shiposhipo Member Posts: 9,148
It is also true that the alarm is standard on the 5-Series and not the 3-Series. Keep in mind that while the 3-Series does not come with the alarm, it does come with a fairly competent anti-theft system that should prove adequate unless you are living/parking in a bad area.

I fully intended to use PeopleFirst because they seemed so together. The rate was 5.79%. When it was time to sign, I was thinking Lo-Jack would be a good idea & asked if I could have it for $695 instead of $795. The finance person said yes if I used her financing, offered me a rate of 5.49% through Chase, so I went for it.

The Lo-Jack decision was straight from the gut. I live in a nice area, but drive all over the place. My old Prelude was stolen 3 times, twice from "nice" areas & once from my workplace, and as good as the std anti-theft features of the BMW might be, I couldn't stomach buying a $30+K new car and walking out without something extra. So besides appeasing that emotional side and getting a lower finance rate, I think I get a little discount on my insurance.
  • purchasingsoonpurchasingsoon Member Posts: 74
I can't believe the 3-series does not come with an alarm. That is shocking given the price of the car. What exactly does the anti-theft system do? Is it worth it to get the alarm? Will this lower the insurance?
    Thanks.

    Per the BMW 3-Series manual:

    Electronic vehicle immobilizer:

    The key to security:

Your BMW is equipped with t passive anti-theft system. This electronic immobilization system is designed to reduce the susceptibility of the vehicle to theft by making it impossible to start the engine using any means other than the special keys furnished with the vehicle. Your BMW center can cancel the electronic system authorization for individual keys (in the event of loss, for instance). A deactivated key can no longer be used to start the engine.

    How the electronics work:
At the heart of this system is an electronic chip that is integrated into the key. The lock mechanism is actually a dual-function device, simultaneously serving as a communications interface designed to allow the security system to maintain a continuous stream of variable, vehicle-specific signals with the electronic circuitry in the key. The system will not release the ignition, fuel injection and starter unless it recognizes an “authorized” key.

    **************

In the case of my insurance company, I did indeed get a discount on my insurance for the integrated system. I was told by my insurance agent that “late model BMWs have such low theft statistics when compared to other comparable cars that they are entitled to lower rates.” I also asked her how much more my insurance would drop if I added the integrated alarm system, and while I do not remember the amount, it was no where near what the system would cost me, even if I installed it myself. That said, there are a number of folks who post on this discussion that have found that their insurance companies require the add-on system in order to qualify for the extra discount. I suggest that you check with our insurance company before you make any decision regarding the extra alarm.

Alarm: I have had one on my last four new cars. Haven't had it go off once, except in my garage when I tried to open the door from the inside after accidentally locking the car w/the key fob. If its standard, or on the car I'm looking at on the lot, I get it. But, I wouldn't pay more than $200 to add it. A pro will steal your car even with an alarm. An amateur won't be able to get past the standard anti-theft systems. I agree though, it should be standard on a BMW, or at least included in the premium package.

Smelly AC: Is this really a common problem? I noticed it on the last 3-series I test drove. I was actually terrified that it was the leatherette (since that was the only 'ette car I drove). I'm actually relieved, as I'm sure it will clear up as the car breaks in.

$1,500 over invoice: That's a good deal, unless they jack-up invoice by including the floor mat cost and advertising fee. That's what they did to me, so I only actually got $1,000 under MSRP (about $1,750 over invoice). I agree with seivwrig. I started my shopping prepared to pay MSRP to order the car I wanted, so I am OK with my deal. You totally forget about the price after you have the car for a while. Also, in the end that few hundred dollars difference is pocket change spread over a 3-5 year finance. I don't know why we make such a big deal about it. Better to pay a few hundred more and have a pleasant, low stress buying experience that you will remember fondly.

My philosophy is: You'll never remember what you did with that extra $250 you saved, but you'll never forget the unpleasant taste of what it took to get it.

A while ago, someone suggested that you can reduce AC smell if you turn off your AC but leave the fan on about a mile before you get to your destination. The smell is a result of residue water, extracted from the outside air, in the car's ventilation system. Turning off the AC with the fan running allows the water to evaporate. The technique seems to work well.

I'm going to order a 330Ci today. Still haven't decided on the exterior color, but I want black leather inside. I haven't heard anywhere about the rear window shade, it doesn't show up on any of the option lists. Does anyone know the order code and the invoice cost?

Are available on www.properautocare.com. I got the kit with All-in-One & High Glaze. It comes with some applicators too. Since we're on the topic, people on this site recommended Vinylex for the 'ette interior over other products, e.g. ArmorAll. Don't know what you'd use for leather. They have great service by the way, very quick to answer your questions.

I rarely use the AC but the few times that I've had it on, I did not notice any smell at all. Maybe it is because I've been running the fan just tlike allano is suggesting... Frankly, it blows my mind that people test-drive BMW's with the AC on. You have just a few minutes to get a feel for the car and you ruin it by having the AC on?!?

Thanks to all of you who posted comments regarding this. I thought this issue had probably been discussed at lenghth in the past, but the TownHall search engine didn't return any finds.

I am now confident that this issue was just a watercooler rumor that stuck in my mind. My colleagues who had problems mentioned electronics and fit/finish imperfections (mostly rattles) with their SA cars. The electronics on the BMW are made by a German company anyway, and any car can have minor rattles. I will now move forward an get the SA-made 325i.

    Thanks again for your comments.

dealer: we have a manual loaner is that ok ?
me: are you kidding ? bring it over!

2001 Premium ,5 speed , cwp,HK, interesting its the same colors as mine but all different options. here are a few pelimanary differnces.

1)cant tell much difference in the HK, glad i passed on it.

    2) door handels pull up ? not out.

    3) clutch seems to have a lot of travel but is easily engaged.

4)prefer my Sport seats, allthough with the manual the power seats are handy.
    5) found the ski sack, but how do the seats fold down ??

Brave: 1/2 the cars on the lots here are Black, and in the 100f TX heat, id run the A/C also :)
however id prefer to hear the engine as well.

Last year when Brave and I swapped cars, the first thing that I noticed as well was the way the door handles worked. My 1999 3er had handles that pulled straight out, Brave's 2001 has the ones that arc up and out. When I commented on it at the time, somebody said that the design change was made because the old style was slightly prone to sticking under certain circumstances.

    tenet1 to answer your questions--

    1. Steering wheel--I haven't yet taken it in to the dealer. I'm no car expert, but I can't imagine that this would be a big problem. I'd think that all they would need to do is re-mount the steering wheel. I wish I would have noticed it when I picked up the car, but I guess that I was just too happy/excited to notice!

    2. Volume controls--yes, I'm sure I'm not "fat-fingering" it. It doesn't happen all the time. When it does occur, afaik, it is usually when I'm holding the volume button down to lower the volume as opposed to just pressing it once or twice. The volume does lower, but then it changes the station/cd track.

As for the smelly A/C, it does seem to be a common problem. Actually, it is not my A/C that smells, but rather the vent air after I turn off the A/C. I've tried turning off the A/C for a while before I park. This has helped some, but has not eliminated the problem. I've also tried spraying lysol into the air intake--this is what has seemed to help the most, but still has not completely eliminated the problem. The strange thing is that on all three of my other cars with A/C, I've never had this problem. Maybe BMW's design is just more prone to it?
  • ccotenjccotenj Member Posts: 610
somewhere in the dark recesses of my mind i seem to remember the "smelly vent" issue getting kicked around on bimmer.org. might want to give that a shot...

mine tends to smell somewhat "stale" after it hasn't run for awhile... the cigarette smoke doesn't help, i'm sure...

if the car in question is "new", is it possible that the plastics in the venting system are "degassing" (or whatever it's called)?

Brave1: We can swap places for 1 week. I will guarantee that you will use the A/C at 7 a.m. in the morning. Actually, I don't use the a/c until I go home from work @ 6:00 pm.

The A/C does smell but I think it has to do with the area where the filter is. Maybe condensation forms that area. I guess you could spray the filter with something nice. The problem does exist when the fan is running by itself.

Give us the benefit of the doubt, please.

Like you, I rarely use the AC - I prefer the windows open effect, and I don't like the AC drag on the engine. Its also not very hot where we live. BUT, if we lived in Arizona or Texas, I'm sure we'd both have a different perspective.

I did the majority of my test driving with the AC off (which seemed to amaze the salesman since it was 88 degrees when I test drove). I wanted to test the power of the 2.5I. I did turn it on for part of the test drive to see what the engine drag would be, and how quiet/noisy it was. Somebody else had probably test driven it earlier that day with the AC on and turned it off wet, which accounts for the smell.

I run the fan on vent/econ setting in my cars at all times, year round, with the exception of those really hot days in summer or when it rains in summer. I don't expect a problem with the smell on my 325.
  • 1pierce1pierce Member Posts: 284
After reading your most recent posts, it sounds like the problem with the "smelly AC" is just stale air in the system and the ductwork which must be expelled when the AC is turned on.

I've noticed that most cars have that stale, musty smell when the AC is first turned on or off, especially if the car was just started and the vent/econ mode was not used.

Funny, but I drove 3 different 3-series, and I remember noticing this in only one car (the xi I drove on a very hot day). Maybe I didn't try the AC on those other cars? Can't remember now. Oh well, I'm not exactly going to cancel my order. At least the smell isn't coming from the 'ette, which I'd feared.
  • ccotenjccotenj Member Posts: 610
as a general rule, you shouldn't turn "off" your fan (in any car), you should always let it run at a low setting... this keeps the air flowing through there, and prevents some of the mustiness from building up...

more a/c - i use mine a lot, even with the top down... try sitting in traffic in a convertible on a hot day sometime... also, you should turn it on at least once every couple of weeks even during the winter...

Rear seats with the split will fold down, but not from inside. There are 2 levers, one on each side of the truck deck (where the speakers are). They are nicely tucked in and hard to see. You pull it out and voila, the seat will fold forward.

As for a/c, I noticed ours has a funky kind of smell to it, but I don't think I have been turning off the a/c before I get home and into the garage. I'll try that tip and see if that helps a bit.

Had my car 3.5 months and I've already got over 7,000 on it...

Heh, try this out. I live in the mountains where it is generally in the high 50's or low 60's in the am when I leave for work (during the summer). By the time I leave work at Edwards AFB at 4:00, it is about 115 or so. Yep, I think I need the a/c. :) Even with a sunshade on the dash, window tint all around... it is still d*** hot in there. Despite all that, the leather (natural brown) aren't nearly as hot as the black shift knob and steering wheel.

Has anyone tried the lowbeams from bmwxenon.com? Reviews please....

    Thanks.
p.s. I kinda regret not getting the xenons.
  • 1pierce1pierce Member Posts: 284
I think the the reason you should run your AC every two weeks is to keep the compressor lubed and the seals from drying out. That said, most defrosters nowadays run the AC compressor to defog the windows. It rains alot here, so I get to use my defrost setting more than once every two weeks in the winter. This is an alternative to consciously running the AC during the winter months.
  • efxxefxx Member Posts: 24
Running the fan for a few minutes after turning off the a/c helps. I had the same issue with a 1994 Corolla and various rentals. I think this is a common issue with many vehicles.
  • 1pierce1pierce Member Posts: 284
All of the posters here who have xenons, and nearly all of the professional reviews I've read, say that the xenons are noticeable brighter than the regular headlights. I guess it depends on how much light your eyes need. Its not so much that the base headlights are considered bad (like the lights on my '99 Dodge Caravan), but rather that the xenons are that good. Personally, I didn't like the rather sharp cut-off of the headlights on the 3-series that I've driven with base headlights. Even if the xenons have the same sharp cutoff, I'm hoping that the extra brightness compensates.

Fifteen years ago, when I didn't wear glasses and my eyes were 20-20, I wouldn't have spent the extra money. Now, I'm really looking forward to the xenons improving my night vision.
  • erickplerickpl Member Posts: 2,735
Besides the really cool look :), I find the xenons are wonderful at lighting up the side of the road and the roadway ahead of me. My neighborhood is in the mountains where we have quite curvy roads and you can't really see very well unless you have brights on. The xenons (on low or high) work great at helping me make sure I can see everything on the road and to either side.

Cool link on driving in Germany!! The latest Roundel had an article on driving on the autobahn but this is a lot more detailed. I thought it was very interesting that the per-mile-driven fatalities on the autobahn are comparable to those on our Interstate system even though there is no enforced speed limit on most of the autobahn and here in the U.S. it's predominantly 65... So anyone who claims that speed kills should take a trip to Germany and judge for themselves.
  • john01john01 Member Posts: 246
actually, there are more parts of the German autobahn with speed limit than without these days.
  • brave1heartbrave1heart Member Posts: 2,698
According to the article, "Still, much of the Autobahn is unlimited, but there is a recommended limit of 130 km/h (81 mph). This recommendation is generally seen for what it is- an attempt by the government to cover itself without having to upset millions of Porsche and BMW owners/voters. " I am guessing the "Greens' desire for a nationwide 100 km/h speed limit on the Autobahns" is not getting them a lot of votes from Porsche and BMW owners :o) Gotta love treehuggers...
  • rshaw11rshaw11 Member Posts: 52
I wasn't originally not interested in spending the extra money for xenons, but the car on the lot had them and the salesman was willing to knock-off half their cost to sell the car. Now that I have them I think their great. Very bright and really, light up the road. One thing I have noticed is that on low beam, they cut off sharply and I don't seem to see much above the road; they put out a wider pattern. The high beams understandably don't seem to have this problem.
