While we're on this morbid topic I would like others' views of the side visibility of the 3er. I've only got 1800 miles on mine, but have felt some difficulty with blind spots, particularly in the traditional left-rear quarter, but also about the same place on the right. I've been driving for about 35 years, so I have a sense of what I should see along the sides and how to adjust the mirrors to have that view. (From my normal driving position the trim at the bottom of the windows appears to come out of the lower inside corner of both sideview mirrors. I can see along the side of the car and out into the adjacent lane.)

Has anyone else noticed excessive blind spots on this car, and can anyone suggest a fix? I have had a couple of surprises with the car and would like to avoid something worse.

Best wishes,

Ed

I don't have a problem with blind spots, but I do offer a suggestion on mirror placement. The side mirrors should be adjusted so that you need to move your head (a good bit) to the left or right to be able to see the side of your car. From a normal driving position the side view mirrors should only show the lanes next to you. Said another way, a car behind you with highbeams on should never reflect in your eyes from the side mirrors. Most people have the mirrors set in too tight. This is especially important if you drive multi-lane freeways.

Every car has them. The 3 series mirrors could be bigger, but I always turn my head before changing lanes.

It sounds like you had a great trip to Carmbria. One of my favorite meals is the Calamari at the Sea Chest restaurant on Moonstone Beach in Cambria. I hope you had a chance to take your 330 up Hwy. 1 past San Simeon for some of the great twisties! Another great drive in the area is Hwy. 46 East. This is the famous stretch of road where James Dean lost his life.

I notice I have to readjust my rear view mirror approximately every 2 weeks as if there isn't enough friction to keep it in place. Any one else has this issue?

Just wondering if anyone else has had any problems with the temperature reading; I've only had my car for a month. I live in Southern California and highest I've seen the temperature reading go up to is 73 degrees (and it certainly gets a lot hotter than that here).

mr323: Yes, I noticed the blind spots too. It is hard for me to see clearly when backing up, also. I remind myself to be extra careful when in reverse. I'm guessing the problem lies in the fact that the car appears to be at a downward sloping angle from rear to front and the head rests (and the rear window design) promote the feeling of "looking uphill backwards." Just my guess, I'm no engineer.

Brave, Shipo: My dealer inflated my tires to 31 psi front/ 38 psi rear. Does that sound reasonable? The reason I ask is that my dealer offers a "free tires for life" deal which is only valid if the owner doesn't cause undue wear and tear because of neglect or downright stupidity. The skeptical side of me wonders why the dealer is advising the disparity between front in rear? Any thoughts?
• ccotenjccotenj Member Posts: 610
that particular setting will probably give you a nice safe amount of understeer, without compromising your ability to turn the car...

what does the doorjamb say? it's printed right there what bmw thinks you should have.

unless you have an aftermarket suspension kit/wheels... those will be tuned to different tire pressures... for example, i have dinan stage 1 in mine (and ltw forged 17" wheels), which they tell you to start out at 32 front/34 rear (on my particular car, anyway, i'm assuming they are tuned differently for different bodystyles), whereas oem parts wanted 32/36... the pp s-02's liked the 32/34 numbers, the new pp s-03's seem to like a little more in the fronts (this could be just due to the fact that they are new")...

free tires for life??? dadgum, i should have bought there!!!! :)

speaking of tires... anyone (besides me) read the new roundel yet?

blind spots... yea, they are there, but are easily solved by looking over your shoulder...

I know this has been discussed quite often on this board but can't find any posts through the search feature. Question being, what is the best method that y'all have found works in taking the brake dust off the rims? Seems a sponge and soap would do the trick but is there some product that really leaves a nice shine and prevents buildup as quick? Also, after how many miles does the dust finally stop building up?
• ccotenjccotenj Member Posts: 610
it never stops... the are pads that will make less dust, i believe (my memory is cloudy here) that pbr metalmasters have been mentioned before... search this topic, or go to the sportscars thread and post the questions under 3ers - gearhead stuff and you'll get an answer...

i just leave mine dirty... i know, i know, i'm gonna get flamed for that, but i'd rather drive my car than clean my car... on the rare occasions that i actually wash it, i clean the wheels with soap and water... every 6 months they get waxed by the detailer...

I dont recall if you have a coupe or sedan ? But ive never had a problem, even though the visibility was pretty good in my sedan. I also agree about mirror placement , most folks like seeing 1/2 the side of their own car, which in the case of the 3er is a nice view ;), but isnt the most useful.

efxx: get that mirror checked out, mine is the stiffest(sp?). ive ever seen it should not be moving around.

Chris: i know im sick, but my wheels and car get a bath once or twice a week. However with a week of rain in DFW im haveing to live with it ;)

My wife's 323iA non-Sport seems to build up a lot more brake dust on her alloy wheels a lot quicker than my 540i6 Sport. Not sure why. Don't think she drives harder than I (but then again maybe she drives like a bat out of hades when I'm not with her?). While I prefer looking at her freshly washed alloy wheels, when they have some brake dust does give it a "maybe I drive a bit aggressively 'cause the car is so fun to drive" look??? That isn't a terrble thing, is it?
• ccotenjccotenj Member Posts: 610
lol... nah, i know some people who are even more compulsive (i.e. my golf partner already has the guys at the carwash trained to give him a couple towels AFTER they get done with it so that he can give it a good going over)...

don't get me wrong, i love the way my car looks when it is clean... i'm just too darn lazy wash it regularly... the inside is clean, and i treat the seats religiously every two weeks (a MUST in a ragtop, especially in summer)...

I always take into account the cars in front of me . I never tailgate, but make sure to keep extra distance if I know a car has great brakes (Porsche, BMW, ETC). On the other hand, I also always watch to see what kind of car is behind me (Usually a Suburban following way too close for a 5000lb truck) and the type of brakes it has. If I see that traffic is going to come to a complete halt infront of me and I see the drivers behind me aren't reacting, I put my hazards on to give them extra warning time.

My temp readings are usually very accurate, within 1 degree of what the radio says. Sounds like you may need some type of adjustment?
• ccotenjccotenj Member Posts: 610
i too, pay attention in the rear view mirror... if someone wants by me, i let 'em by... if they aren't bright enough to not tailgate me in their landbarge, i don't expect them to be skilled enough to even be able to consider avoiding me... i KNOW i can stop faster than just about anyone out there, only because my machinery is better than theirs, plus i know my car is well-maintained and my brakes work... i'd rather pull over and let someone by then get scrunched...

'02 330i, step.

I originally had a lot of problems with the blind spots and found that (as others here just suggested) adjusting the mirrors outwards so you can't really see behind you but just the side lanes. This will eliminate most of the blind spot. This takes a lot of getting used to.

Same issue when backing up... very hard to judge. With time I have no problems anymore.

On another note... I noticed when I first hit my brakes the steering wheel would give a little yank to the left. Dealer test-drove and says it needs lower control arms and bushings. Car has about 7,000 miles on it.

dafreak... Please stick with the actual published results. R&T made their results perfectly clear. The 330i Sport was the overall best car PRICE INDEPENDENT. Won the "Performance" and "Subjective" categories, but was more expensive, as optioned out by R&T. The G35 Sport was the overall best car PRICE DEPENDENT. It was price that mattered for the latter. Big difference. Do you want the best car or one that is best for the money? And if you don't load up on options, R&T could've tested a 330i Sport costing thousands less. And BMW CCA members can get a $1,000 rebate from BMW, something you can't get from Infiniti. (Heck, for the money the Subaru WRX might be the best bang for the buck!)

Hello my name is Paul and I'm a recovering (or would that be recurring?) BMW junkie.

Hello guys,

I just realized (well, the BMW diplay told me and I verified it) that one of the bulbs on my tail/break light has burned out. This is a stupid question but would the warranty cover it? Also, if I had to do this myself where would the best place to get a bulb? Is CircleBMW still the "recommended" online BMW auto parts provider?
For a part like that it would probably be better to go and get it from the dealership.

Thanks.

Now that I live in the suburbs and drive a farther distance to work, I find myself constantly aware of what car is behind me and how close they are. Usually a huge SUV and way too close. I drive in the far left lane both ways, when there is traffic, so I can at least dive off into those luxurious shoulders on Texas SH 288, if I feel I need to to avoid the read end collision from behind. I have not had to do that yet... If there is no or little traffic, I will usually sit in the middle lane so leenelsonMD can get by going 79. :)

What I hate is when I leave a safe distance in front of me, which is evidently an invitation for anyone to take that spot just because their car happens to fit.

I have had the luck to get read ended in my pretty 330i, just three months after purchase. But I was stopped at a stoplight and didn't hear it coming. I got hit at a high enough speed that the woman's airbag went off when she slammed into me. And the force of the impact pushed me into the back end of the car in front of me. I love being the Oreo filling... The police officer tried to cite me as well, assuming I must have been moving to hit the car in front of me. He was rather incredulous when everyone except the woman who hit me said I was stopped.

All I have to say is thank goodness I was in the BMW when I got into the accident. Everything worked as it should and the back end was pretty bad, but no one was injured, just stiff and sore. The car looked perfect other than the front and back end damage, so nothing else "moved" in the accident. Ad, yes the car will disconnect the battery, turn on the interior lights and hazards and shut off when you get hit hard enough. Took me a few seconds to figure out what had happened when the car lit up like a Christmas tree. We had to push it out of the road into a parking lot.

Sorry for the saga...

I had two taillights burn out on my 328i within a few weeks of each other. Yes, they are certainly covered under the warranty, however, at least in my case, it was just too easy to replace them myself to be bothered with driving the whopping 6 miles to my local BMW dealer. I just stopped by our local auto parts store and bought the bulbs (2 to a pack), total cost for the repair, about $2.00.

As it turned out, the bulbs were the ONLY unscheduled maintenance that my car had in the 40,000 miles that I had it. Not too bad in my book. ;-)

dafreak... Are you all knowing and all seeing? You already know how good the future G35 manual will perform? But it isn't out yet. Might be longer than people think, esp. for the sedan model. But since you know how well it will perform, please tell us exactly when it will be available and on sale in USA? Inquiring minds want to know.

For R&T test, the 330i won 5 of 7 "Performance" subcategories. G35 won only 2. The 330i won 4 "Subjective" subcategories and tied for 1 (with the G35). The G35 won NO "Subjective" subcategories and tied for one (with the 330i). And 7 out of 11 R&T writers said the 330i was the best car. Only 2 chose the G35. These facts speak for themselves. This is what R&T published. No way to interpret this as a G35 win. Close but still no cigar!

Everybody else here thats in "BMW 3-series" do you like your 3-series?? If yes raise your hand.

I suspect everyone is somewhat pleased with "their" choice. So could we please drop the "mines better than yours routine"? It was annoying in the 3rd Grade and is just as annoying now.

In the late 70's, when Ford was running those Granada vs Mercedes commercials, National Lampoon did a spoof: "How did the Granada compare to the Mercedes in ride and handling? Great! Now try and get laid just because you own one." :)

On another note, I posted many moons ago that I was trying to get my wife in for a test drive. Her schedule is finally freeing up and I think we are headed for the dealership (whoops, I mean BMW Center) on Friday. I'll keep you posted.

To dafreak: You'll not change anybody's opinion here, and we now know EVERYTHING about the G35 that you want us to, so why continue with the eye pollution? Frankly, your posts are screaming "insecurity". I own a Nissan, like the G35, and even I'm sick of hearing about it. We love Bimmers, and always will. Deal with it.

To Everybody Else: Now that I've gotten in my last shot (unfair, I know), the best way to shut this guy up is to ignore his posts. Posting with no response will eventually get boring for him.

Erick: Not raggin' on your ride (Xi). I drove a 325xi. It's still a 325i, just with a little more weight and alot more winter traction. Let us know how you like it when it arrives. Isn't this wait a killer? Mine is scheduled for early August.

Shipo,

You live in NH, right? Which dealership services your car? What do you think of them?
• shiposhipo Member Posts: 9,148
Ummm, well that is jumping the gun just a little. ;-) I live in northern New Jersey. We signed the listing agreement on our NJ house Sunday 23-June and were targeting a showing date of Wednesday the 27th. On Monday the 24th, as the sign was being pounded into our yard, somebody came by and insisted on seeing our house, dirty breakfast bowls on the counter, unmade beds, wet workout clothes draped over the shower curtain rod, clutter and all. That person tried to put an offer on the house there and then (my agent wouldn't let her until her husband saw the house). Over the next couple of days, things got even more frenetic, culminating in a bidding war on Thursday evening, accompanied by tears, sobbing, vomiting and other forms of persuasion that one prospective buyer visited upon her spouse so that he would stay the course.

That said, we made an offer on a house in Windham last Wednesday, which was accepted, and we are targeting a 31-July closing. Which means that I have not yet had my car serviced in NH, in fact, I have not yet had it serviced at all (it only has 3000+ miles on it). It is however, my intention to have my car serviced by Tulley BMW in Nashua, about which I have heard good things.

I hope this helps.

Best Regards,
Shipo

I will adjust the mirrors outward a bit, as suggested, and hope that that takes away the blind spot. I was taught to adjust mirrors to allow you just to see the side of your car in the edge of the mirror. I think the aspect ratio of mirrors has changed over the years, as has the curvature, so perhaps a more outward looking attitude will make the difference.

Honestly, the only reason for this post is to deflect attention from unwelcome comparisons.

Congrats ORKWIS, and Happy Motoring!

Do you think the speakers in the stock 325 are the reason for my poor sound quality? i'm a little worried that if i decide to upgrade the components, the stock speakers will still prevent major improvements. also, what do you think is the best way to improve performance without buying everything. thanks everyone! I'm so disappointed i didn't get the HK but now its too late!! (keep in mind i haven't upgraded a sound system in a car before so i have no idea what i'm doing)

I take possession of my new 320i on Friday. What can I/should I expect in terms of what the dealer will go through with me in terms of operation of all the bells and whistles. I got a mini lesson on the test drive but I think I was in information overload as I was just having too much fun driving. Also, what kind of "give-aways" if any can I expect or should I request...floor mats, extra key etc. Thanks!

I currently have a 2001 325i w/ sport package. I generally like the car, and haven't had any "real" issues. But, it kind of dissappoints me in terms of "solidity"-- there's numerous rattles, squeaks, drivetrain whining, and the steering (even post retrofit) feels loose on-center. One of my main priorities in buying a car is to get a "solid" car--- I love that traditional european built like a tank feeling. Maybe because igrew up with Volvos. I also value handling with decent engine performance. I'm toying w/ the idea of upgrading to a 5 series-- by my calculation, I may be able to do this (with euro delivery and BMWCCA rebate), for a total cost of about $6000. I would forgo the sport pkg this time because I find the tramlining effect of the wider low profile high performance tires to be tiresome on the highway. I've driven a 520 in europe, and was impressed with the steering feel, and overall "glued to the road" solid feeling of the car. I love the thick, heavy doors, the solid center console, etc.

Because the 5 series actually only weighs about 240 pounds more than a comparable 3 series, and because of my experiences w/ the 520 and my current 325, I'm thinking that I would be happy w/ a 525i w/ manual transmission.

What do you think of your switch to the 5 series, and what do you miss about the 3? Given my criteria, do you think i'll be happier w/ the 5 (more solid feeling, no rattles, squeaks, etc)? I do feel a bit strange about getting rid of 13 month old car, but I'm getting the feeling that i'll never be completely happy w/ the 3-- and i like to keep my cars for a long time if possible. I just haven't managed to ever "warm up to my car".

Not trying to talk you out of keeping your car , but id like to see your dealer or BMW to resolve your problems. My 99 Sport has been a model of reliability sans my dealers mechanics work ;(. At any rate other than the steering i wonder what other problems you are having ?

Derek: i know on bimmer.org and some other sites there are answers to your questions, while i still consider the $645.00 HK a little over priced due to the design of the system your prob looking a lot more than that to upgrade. I know MB Quart make a package for the 3er but ive only seen it on the E36 not E46.... good luck

I've been to about 5 different dealers to try and resolve my steering issues-- and have had 7 different alignments. Its actually a subtle thing that I only notice because its my car-- and most mechanics aren't good at detecting subtle problems. But, I just think the steering on 6 cylinder 5 series is better than any 3 series (including the original, light, new new and 2002 versions). Same thing goes w/ the rattles-- they're not big, but they creep up and irritate me on longer trips. I had 2 dealers attempt to fix some of the rattles and they both managed to break other mis-install trim pieces while attempting to fix the rattles (andn they didn't fix the rattles). a lot of the noises are just endemic to the cheap nature of some of the plastics and construction of the interior. For example: (you'll notice these on any 3 series). flexy, squeaky rear parcel shelf and rear shelf vent
-squeaky C pillar trim (try pressing on yours). If you want to hear really awful noises press on the inside of the backlight-- i noticed this while cleaning it the other day.
-cheap steering column trim
-decor strips (the wood or high gloss), make creaking noises-- this doesn't happen on the 5 and e38 7 series. Try pressing on these strrips and you'll see what I mean
-rattly, B seat belt height adjuster (yes, I've tried the TSB)- I finally took it apart myself and applied copious amounts of felt--that helped a lot
-unidentified rattle from driver side door or left dash-- many other 3 series do this but no one knows why. Its not the window regulator problem-- could be door seals-- but again that's endemic to the design
-Other rattles and noises that just mysteriously appear and vanish
-high pitched squeak over bigger bumps-- sounds like its coming from the seat
-cheap, flexy, squeaky plastic used for the center console (where the cupholders are).
-irritating HVAC sound noise-- it has a "pitch" to it almost like a moaning or whistling.
While I'm at it (some other cheap interior touches that don't make noise, but irritiate me nonetheless):
-exposed metal seat rails with exposed bolts
-cheap trunk lining material (take a look at a 5, 7 or Audi/VW to see how it should be done)
-"rough" untrimmed holes in the leather/vinyl where the front headrest chrome supports join the headrest. again, see Audi for how it should be done. I'll admit that the 5 and 7 are also poorly done in this respect
-Plastic door stop mechanisms
-Cheap feeling handbrake operation (can't quite describe-- but the 5 doesn't feel this way).

One of the reasons that I bought the car was for the inline 6 engine sound. Unfortunately, this is mostly drowned out by drivetrain/differential whine, excessive wind noise and all of the interior noises.

I suppose it might theoretically be possible to eliminate the noises, but it would involve taking apart the entire interior and applying lots of felt and foam. It would probably also involve having custom built versions of some interior pieces built. All of this would end up probably creating other problems and might not even stop all of the noises.

I was further disheartened the other day when I drove a rental Mazda Protege and couldn't hear any interior noises-- over rough roads and bumps the car just sounded one solid piece (the way a BMW SHOULD sound).

my experience w/ the 5 suggests that its better built in many ways. I probably should just give up on BMW altogether and buy an old Mercedes or a Japanese car, but I really like the combination of handling, performance, feel, practicality, styling, etc. The 5 seems to have all of these traits, while also being well built--but maybe I'm wrong about that. Maybe I am too picky- but it frustrates me that BMW could probably correct all of these issues in production for less than $10 (maybe much less) a car, but they don't.

>Maybe I am too picky-<
Really? No kidding? Curse you for mentioning those exposed seat rails and bolts! I'll never be able to enjoy driving my 3er again. Anybody know where I can buy rolls of felt in bulk on a national holiday?
• shiposhipo Member Posts: 9,148
Wow, I hardly know where to start. In my case, the only issue (from your list) that I had with my former 328i were the infamous “Seat Belt Tensioner Tick”, which was fixed by my dealership on the first try. I also acknowledge that the chrome/leather interface on the headrest could have been finished off better, but that is not an issue for me. As for the rest of your list, fortunately for me, my German built E46 did not exhibit such traits. Said another way, after 40,000 miles driven in and around NYC, my 328i was as quiet and solid as any I have ever driven, bar none. ;-)

As far as my 530i, is does in fact seem even a little more “Vault Like” than my 328i. So far, there is only one little rub; my 530i has the “Seat Belt Tensioner Tick”, which I find very surprising, as I have never heard of this problem on a 5-Series before. That said, it is so faint that it really does not bother me unless I am on a rough road. From my perspective, based upon your experience with your 3er, I would say that you would probably love a 5-Series.

If you live in the NYC area, you are welcome to come by in the next couple of weeks and drive my 530i and see if it would be more to your liking. After that, my wife and I will be moving our family to the Southern New Hampshire area, so, if you are up there, the offer still applies, just a few weeks later.

Best Regards,

rjg96... You appear to have very high standards. Methinks you might be a bit too picky and a bit unrealistic. I've got a 323iA and a 540i6. While I totally agree with you that BMW needs to address these niggling issues like squeaks, rattles, etc. think both the 3 and 5 Series share many of them. Both of my cars have their share of little noises (squeaks, creaks, groans, rattles, whines). Think I've gotten used to most of 'em.

The 5 does seem to be more solid. And the trim is nicer. But that is purely subjective on my part.

Sounds to me like you might be better off with a Lexus, say ES300 or GS300. But even then you'll likely have various noises from the engine or transmission that only you'll be able to hear.

I tend to drive listening to CD or radio, or talking with wife, or listening to the kids bicker. Maybe all their whining covers up some of my cars' whinings? Or might help me tolerate the various odd noises better?

I'm a big fan of manual transmissions and Sport Package. Only way to go in nice BMW. (Too bad wife can't drive a stick.)

I keep wondering if BMW isn't making their cars too complex and too overengineered such that they create all these little noises. All the additional items and equipment on the new 745i that supposedly are going to filter down to the next 5 Series make me nervous. Today's 5 Series has been in continuous production since 1996. It is about as reliable as you'll get for a BMW product! I'd recomend you get a 2002 or 2003 5 Series. BMW should've gotten as many "bugs", "gremlins", and "poltergiests" out of the platform after 6 or 7 years of production.
