The new LS 430 in a nice car. It is well built, reliable and reasonably priced. However, the LS 430 lacks personality and excitement. Lexus styling appears to lack originality.
The car seems to copy the previous S Class in looks. The handling is not as crisp and overall, the vehicle is not fun to drive.

These comments are subjective. Objectively, the LS 430 is a great buy, unbelievably reliable and has the interior/technology to match any vehicle on the road. That said, I still prefer the Mercedes-Benz with the extended warranty of course.

yes, I noticed the same thing on my fuel gauge, too. I just had it replaced because it would never reach the "full" mark. Now, it reaches the full mark but I notice that when I fill up the tank, it is always about 2 gallons more left in the tank than what the gauge says. Therefore, it's as if either way, the gauge is off by about 2 gallons pre and post replacement.

I was about to lease a '01 320 when I test drove the BMW 530. Now I'm not so sure. Any thoughts on how these cars compare? By the way, I've been driving an LS400 for the last 10 years. The car is extremely comfortable, but it's not as much fun to drive as my wife's V70.
  • fieldhousefieldhouse Member Posts: 1
I too was close to getting an E320 but opted instead for the new bmw.. Although most folks agree that mercedes makes some of the best cars available, the bmw was just more fun to drive.
  • mbdrivermbdriver Member Posts: 426
To each his own, of course, but I disagree with fieldhouse. I much prefer driving the E320 over the 5-Series BMW (even the 540I). The 3-Series Bimmer is a hoot to drive, but it's way too small for my needs; besides, the E-Class is comparable in handling and fun-to-drive quotient, if not superior. Lastly, the 5-Series is not that much larger in cabin space and trunk size than the 3-Series, and it's considerably smaller than an E-Class MB. But as they say, personal taste makes the world go 'round -- beauty is in the eye of the beholder -- what's one man's poison is another man's ....
  • valueguyvalueguy Member Posts: 210
    A colleague of mine just acquired a 2001 530I.
While the handling of the 5 series is crisper than the E the ride can be punishing. The M-B is roomier on the inside and a "classier" car than the 530.

On the other hand, if you want to take every corner at maximum speed and interior room is not a concern then a 530 may be your ticket. I prefer the styling of the E to the 5 series.
Purchase the car you prefer to drive.

Any comments on replacement tires for a 1995 E320? I'm looking for a quite ride with performance. Right now I have Mich. MXV's. Any other suggestions?
  • greasykid1greasykid1 Member Posts: 336
I understand MBdrivers comments. The reason that I compared the 320 & not the 430 was because with similar equipment they are about the same price. I am selling my E300 turbo diesel only because the resale right now is fairly high & good discounts are available on E cars. Although I have partipated in motor sports (kanas, ralling etc) over the years I am now well into social security age & am interested in the most car for the money & the luxury of the ls430 which I have now driven several times. It is a tough decision to make but we make long trips to see family & friends & the 430 has more inside room & a much larger trunk (golf clubs etc). Have still not ruled out the E320. Like some of the new paint colors but $1600 is a bit much. Also for any one who is interested the MB navigation system is outdated as it is on CD's & lexus ha sit on 1 DVD. It's been a long time since I have been in this type of decision making as I always went out & bought a new MB. If my E300 doesn/t sell I may just keep it. THE END!!!!

I cancelled Tele-Aid by fax and by phone. The salesman was very aggressive and tried to talk me out of cancelling. I said it should be free for MB buyers and that it is my belief that most people will not renew.
I received my Visa bill two months later only to find that they charged me anyway. I called MB customer service and they said they would credit my card. Isn't that nice of them ! I've heard that this is not uncommon.

My cellphone problem was not quite the same as chasberg's but I hope this helps: I picked up my E430 4matic, brilliant silver/charcoal, E1, E2, K2a, heated seats, AMG 17 monoblocks on 12/26. While the salesman was introducing me to my car, he could not get the car's phonejack to dock with the phone. The phonejack of the home battery charger, however, would dock with the phone without trouble. Upon inspection, I discovered that the 2 phonejacks were of different sizes, the one in the car was a millimeter smaller. We took the car back to the service area and had the car's phonejack replaced. It took 15 minutes. The phone has not given me problems since. The voice activated feature is very useful.

A propos to this, when I called AT&T customer service to move my account to the new phone, the technician warmed me that I would lose some features of my current service (digital one rate) as the new Motorolla was an analogue phone. I gave him the model number etc. and told him that the phone was digital but the idiot insisted that it was not. I thanked him for his help, hanged up, and dialed the local AT&T digital office. They were much more knowledgable than the 1-800 tech and hooked me up immediately. The phone works fine and all the features of my previous phone (voice mail, text, call waiting, etc.)were intact. So the MB saleslman didn't lie. The 2001 model phones are compatible with ATT digital one rate.

I appreciate your reasons for favoring the Lexus. I'm also drawing social security but still favor the E320 over the floaty, lux-boat ride and handling of the Lexus (a comfortable, super Interstate cruiser). However, we use the MB only for short trips and locally; for extended travel, we always fly and then rent a car at the destination. But I have a suggestion -- if you can afford it, why not keep the '99 E300 turbodiesel AND buy the LS420? Best of both worlds! We kept my wife's '77 300D (96,000 miles and perfect condition) and traded our other newer car for a new '00 E320. Suits us fine!

What have people found to be the best bra or other protection from rock chips for the E320? By best, I mean satisfactory function, appearance, and ease of removing for access to the engine.

I just called up on a used mercades E class (97, 320) they told me it would be about $700 a month to lease!!! does this seem a bit expensive? how much should it cost to lease a unloaded E class(2001)? how much should it cost to lease a used (97) mercades EI class(unloaded)? thanks in advance.
  • rokinkeadrokinkead Member Posts: 18
It all depends on your down payment and term of course. If you are paying zero down, maybe that amount is reasonable. Specify how much you are willing to put down (not too much now) and term, and you someone might be able to be of help.
  • parfive1parfive1 Member Posts: 75
Never never try to lease a used car. Poor residual values result in much higher lease rates.
You can actually lease a new E class for not much more than $700/month with less than $2000 total up front money needed.
    Check around.
  • dunninladunninla Member Posts: 33
Fububoy, I agree with parfive. Ten weeks ago I leased a brand new black E320 with E2 package for low 700's with nothing down except 1st mo. lease and license. 4yr. 15k miles/yr. thru MBCC. The secret is I got it close to the dealer invoice price via the Internet Sales division of South Bay Mercedes Benz, Torrance, CA through an Esther Wolf. The residual value on MBCC leases is pre-determined, and changes I think three or four times per year. The lease factor also doesn't change often. So the only part of the lease equation that you control is the purchase price. A close to invoice purchase price gets you into the low-mid 700s on a lease.

As far as leasing used, I checked this out first. The problem is firstly that the lease factor goes up, and secondly the E320s hold their value so well that dealers price them, in my opinion, way too high. It may be a better value on used MBZ to bargain vigorously on the purchase price, then finance it through your credit union.

Now that more and more people are discovering buying services and the Internet sales divisions of dealerships, I think the used E320 prices will eventually have to adjust downward by 5-7% relative to what you see out there today.

We have both a 2000 528iA and a 2000 E320-4Matic. The following would be my comments:

    1) Ride & Handling - BMW most definitely has the more sporty feel while the Mercedes is softer - I think most people would concur with this. Depending on the weather of your area, the 4Matic system might be useful. However, I think the road condition would have to be pretty bad or hilly to make much difference. Both cars have traction & stability control.

    2) Safety - I would rate them approximately equal. Mercedes has rear door airbags standard and their head airbag is a curtain rather than BMW's tube.

    3) Service costs - Should be about the same but BMW's "free maintenance" period is only 3 yrs/36,000 mi vs Mercedes' 4 yrs/50,000 mi. Once out of warranty the Mercedes 4Matic may be more costly for repairs. We had 91/92 Mercedes 4Matics and they were very expensive to repair. New system is less complicated however.

    4) Pricing - Comparably equipped E320-4Matic is probably $7-8,000 higher than a 530i. Also, most Mercedes dealers have gone to charging the list price while BMW's can usually be had at a discount. We bought our MB at model year end and received $2,500 discount. Even so, the MB was $6,000 more than the 528i.

    5) Dealer Service - Depends on the dealership. Where I used to live, the MB dealer was vastly superior. Where we are now, the BMW dealer is much better to deal with.

Any further specific questions, please feel free to post.
    Good luck with your decision!!!

Grease man, sounds like your bored! Your E class loaded to the max and a diesel is high value. But you have the ulitmate interstate cruiser, and can have it for years! The lexus will accelerate better than a diesel, and will be all cushy down the road. Its a newer design, and is going to feel more contempary than a new 320. Basically going from your diesel to a new 320 is not going to excite you. And I agree that if you need lots of little insignificant creature comforts offered in the ls, and try to option them side by side, then 320 is costly. A new 430 with the low profile tires standard is going to be more bumpy than you want. If your in social security territory, then that cushy thing starts looking sweet. Sounds like the LS will make you happy, And I cannot blame you. I got my e-430 for $51k plus tax. only opted for sunroof and auto wipers. Did not care for other options and did not want to pay. Its quick and corners like a mouse through a pipe! Bmw is great, but just two small inside and in the trunk. Resale not as strong as MB, and it looks like a 3 series, which in my opinion is a great car! I also consider the crash worthyness of MB. I think fair comparison is GS vs. E, and S class vs. LS. Mercedes always going to be pricy compared. For that matter, how good is the newer caddys compared option for option, and ride quality to the lexus. The lexus will be pricier, but of course a better car. The caddy may be a better value.......in the short run. The lexus may be a better value vs a mercedes.........in the short run. While I am not crusing the lexus site, Im sure your preaching to the choir if your asking them if your doing the right thing, just like your getting mixed reviews here. Good luck and have fun shopping. Too bad trading in is no fun!

Prices are finally starting to come down in the SF bay area for e-classes. For years, due in part to the dot com boom, all e's were at full list. Very little haggle room. This weekend, I found out that a dealer in the area is now marking them down a minimum of $2K. They said that the new model is supposed to be out in Sept. The spy page indicates that it will not be released until March 2002 or so. Does anyone have an update on timing? Also, has anyone heard if they will start producing "limited edition" versions with bundled options like they did with the old C class prior to the new C coming out?

All of what Parfive1 and Dunninla said is true. I was surprised to find out how much dealers are willing to cut off prices in recent weeks. With the economic lowdown, MSRP. is no longer the rule for the E Class.

MBCC is not the only leasing company that dealers use of course. There are some good leases going now. You can get $700 with little down, and at least 12K hi per year.

Do not rely on the interned lease calculators to do an estimate. They are not sufficiently detailed. If you have a Palm pilot, I can mail you a share ware lease calculation application, or I can email an Excel spreadsheet that I created based on Edmunds' example. Use the spreadsheet at your own risk. It is as good as the Palmpilot app., but it is useless in the dealership unless you have a notebook. It works well when you are sitting in the dealership checking the numbers.

Agreed, do not lease used. Lease for no more than the warranty period. Who wants to pay to fix "their" car?

Lastly, yes the residuals are fixed within a leasing company. However, the money factors and prices are not.

P.S.: Do not think of the economic slowdown as a reason to reconsider getting a car. Think of it as the right time to take advantage of lowered prices, interest rates, and better deals. (It is perhaps one of the best times to buy a house. Isn't it?)

I used spell check and it did a Mercedes to my post. It took on its own mind and changed SLOWDOWN to LOWDOWN, "12K MI" to "12K hi". Just read with care.

I picked up an '01 E320 on Saturday. Great car. Aspen Green/Java, E2. After reading the manual twice (great geek reading), I found that some of the problems experienced have the solutions right there in the "text book". e.g I got three ESP/ABS/BAS malfunctions as soon as I drove of the lot and took a hard right. Took it back and the sales and "customer front" crew could not figure out the solution. After reading the manual, I discovered that it got screwed up because of battery disconnection and needed a reset by full left and right turns of the steering. There are other resets (windows, etc.) that are covered in the manual. Apparently, when the battery is disconnected, weird things happen. We all should be aware. But this is just as much of a new toy as it is a great car. Isn't it? There are many things to learn and conquer.

I also had two teleaid malfunctions. One went away with activation. I am taking it in on Friday to have the other resolved. I think it is a software update like on the C classes.

We should all understand that with all the quirks, it is still one the most advanced motor cars on the road. Also note that these quirks are primarily software related. Nevertheless, I think the bugs in the E are pretty much ironed out. We will see what happens when the new one comes out and they lurch to the next frontier.

One thing that is not clear in the manual is how to operate the trunk lock with the mechanical key.
The manual says "remove the key in position two (clockwise twist) to lock," but I find that I can not extract the key in the twisted position. What am I doing wrong?

The E320 bumped a 4runner from the garage to the driveway. Yes, it is privileged. This weekend I will be driving again to let you know more then. This is all for now.

The next generation E-class will not be released in North America till fall of 2002. Europe always gets it several months before North America does, which is sort of good since the MB factory can have immediate feedback on any initial problems and correct them before the cars hit our shores.

My 2000 320 4-matic has developed an occasional subtle squeak associated with a slight vibration when turning the steering wheel. I had my dealer check it out at my A-service. They told me that this is a problem endemic to the e class for which there is currently no fix. They told me that a MB "technical rep" was going to be at their dealership later this week to examine several other e's with the same issue. Also told me that there was no reason to be concerned or to believe that the problem could develop into something more serious. Previously, I had a similar squeak without the vibration, which was resolved by some lubrication. This issue appears different. Anybody else heard of this and received this or a different explanation? If they don't know what it is, how can they say that it won't become a serious problem?

A couple months back I met a guy in a parking lot. Our 2000 e-320's were identical and we were chatting next to his car when I noticed that his left rear wheel was different from his front and different from my standard wheels. I asked him why he changed his back wheel. He said he hadn't. I pointed out the difference, we looked at his right rear wheel and it matched the two front wheels. His left rear was a pre-2000, I think a circa 1999 wheel. Weird, huh? Makes you wonder if there are any 2000's out there with 1999 hoods and/or rocker panels.

Is this a great source of info, or what?!? I just read through the last bunch of posts and marveled at the depth and variety of information and tips regarding the E-Class. Everything from inputs about Tele-Aid, phones, leasing, MSRP. vs discounts, how to reset steering/windows etc., comparisons of BMW and MB, release of new generation E, mechanical and software quirks, and on and on. Thanks, everyone. I'm really amazed (and grateful).

If anyone knows how to work that truck lock, I'd be interested in knowing too. I also tried to turn key to clockwise position and remove, but it wouldn't work. I just gave up and forgot about it.
I don't let any valets near my baby anyhow. I'll park it myself. (Always by itself, or next to another nice car)

I've had my share of little quirks with my 00 E320.
    1. Bad sending unit for fuel gauge (fixed)
    2. Intermittent turn signal (bad bulb-fixed)
    3. Squeaky steering wheel (not fixed yet)
    4. Intermittent cup holder lid..sometimes it shuts, sometimes it won't shut.(not fixed yet).

Admittedly these items do not affect my ability to drive the car. They are, however, annoying, and should not be happening to a $50k car.
It would seem to me that MB should be paying more attention to quality control as opposed to having to pay all that warranty work.

Love the car, but irritated by the little quirks.
Having said all that. I feel better already. ;-)

What's the best way to keep the Java interior clean? I know that the floor mats will dirty quick so I want something that will help repel the dirt. Should I use Scotch Guard or is there something better?

I have had my '00 E430 Sport for 12 months. The car has not required any unscheduled visits the past 11 months. The first month of ownership the car required two visits to replace the CD changer and phone connector.

I have no problems with my steering and the car is rattle free. I just purchased the M-B extended warranty from a salesman recommended by somoene on this board. I saved a few $$ off MSRP.
The warranty is for my peace of mind.

I have two minor complaints about my vehicle. The first is my clock is constantly "losing" a minute or two every month. So, I have to change the minutes periodically. Second, the seat occasionally "moans" when I initially take off at warp speeds. This only happens sporadically and then only on my first launch. I have decided to live with my car's personality; the dealer probably could not fix these minor annoyances and may make things worse.

Overall, the finest vehicle I have ever owned. At 12 months out I am usually looking to trade cars but not this time. I plan on keeping my E and adding a Honda S2000. How does yellow sound for the S2K?

Am I the only Benz owner who finds their single articulating wiper blade system to be completely inadequate? I change blades regularly, add MB washer concentrate, but if there is constant tire spray from a vehicle in front, my windshield never wipes clean and at night is downright dangerous. The dealer says there is nothing wrong. Does anyone have a fix for this? (other than trading)
  • 4426444264 Member Posts: 67
The single blade certainly require more maintenance, have gotten MB to change blade on a regular basis, every 2 months or so. I stay away from auto car wash and make sure that my blade doesn't get coated with wax based car shampoo.

No problem locking the trunk using the mechanical key.

No squeaks in my 2001 E even with those AMG suspension and 18 inch wheels. The only thing I hear is those rear headrests bumping on the rear deck over speed bumps when I have them folded down.

Debating between the 2000 StarTAC or the 2001 Timeport with a CDMA provider, any feedback?

I'm looking for feedback from E320 owners who moved to an E430. I can imagine the extra power was nice. I'm curious if there's anything that was disappointing about the transition? Any changes that bothered you a little? Did you get used to it?

My first post was #537. My auto just came in to the dealership this week. Last night I drove by the dealership to look at it in the lot. I noticed that it had Pirelli SUPERSPORT P7000's on it. I remember much comment on this forum in regards to tires and I thought some of you may be interested in this fact. I should be taking delivery next Monday and I will share my experiences with you...

i also have java interior, the guy that does my detailing gave me a can of ' a foaming, orange smelling product, that comes in a spray can' there is no brand name on it, but the product works like magic to remove shoe marks from the door sill, and just general dirt that shows up on java. the good thing is you don't rub, this is important when the velor cloth gets dirty. i put a good coating on lexol on the leather 3 times a year.

the single wiper is problematic, mb even replaced the entire wiper assembly, still streaks. roger

Chap, is the 430w4 indicating your getting the 4-matic?? Please keep us informed on the supersports. I have the goodyears (on 01'430, and while they perform great, they moan slightly when you stop (anybody else getting that also??. They are a tad bit too noisy for my taste. I would also prefer to have all season performance. Basically I want it all!

Mike1212, I did not replace 320, but tested extensivly and bigest difference is acceleration and effects from larger wheels and tires. They are considered ultra high performance. That means priority is dry whether. Because side walls are small, its somewhat bumpier than 320. I don't mind that as much as noise. Car runs smoothes and handles the road imperfections very well. 320 is better insulated against bumps. The 430 is very quick and lots of power. The 320 does not lack in power in anyway. My choice for the 430 was pure indulgence..

Wipers: what is best way to clean the rubber on the blades?? I suspect rain-x would help also.

Has anyone been successful just replacing the blade with a refil?

Question: I know a lot of mercedes owners have xenon envy. My question is: are all xenon's created equil? by that, are the xenons on 35k honda, er, acura tl's as good as an s-class xenon's?? I don't have xenons, and not willing to put 2k in them. While they im sure work better, I think the standard lights work very well and suit my needs.

chappye: Yes, please lt eus know what you think about the Pirelli tires... I am about to order a set of new tires and that is one of the models I'm considering..

bargamon: I have purchased and installed the wiper refills my self. They are about $9-10 dollars each at the dealer vs. ~$25 for the blade assembly. Even with a new refill the windshield still looks foggy and has some streaks. I think some of the photos I've seen of the "2002" model show dual wipers. That has to be an improvement. The single wiper moves so fast that when I shoot some fluid on the windshield the car next to me gets sprayed as the wiper "throws" the fluid off the tip of the blade. The driver next to me can't be too happy with that...

valueguy - Glad you're so pleased with your '00 E430 Sport. I am, too, with my "00 E320. Best car I've ever owned. BTW, the clock in mine gets updated by the COMAND GPS and is accurate, I believe, to the the second. I've never had to reset it, and It even changed itself to standard time last fall from daylight savings. The Honda T2000 sounds enticing, but have you considered the MB SLK320? It may be a bit more refined -- and it also comes in "yuck yellow."

jures - any chance you can find out the brand of the "foaming, orange smelling" spray cleaner you use for your java interior and where to purchase it? Sounds like a great product.

bargammon - I have xenons on my E320 and love them. They're significantly brighter than halogens, and I noticed the difference immediately. While halogens may be adequate, the zenons, to me, are worth the extra cost. Perhaps Drew can comment on any differences between S-Class and Acura (etc.) xenons.

I've had my E430 for 5 months, the car had required 4 unscheduled visits to the dealer for a squeaky steering wheel and a "THUMP' (noise) coming from the rear of the car whenever I make a left turn. After 3 visits the dealer has decided to replace the steering wheel box and the rubber boots. Problem fixed, but they cannot locate the noise from the rear. They have tried securing the muffler, because they think it is hitting the car. I suspect that the noise is coming from the rear suspension, maybe the shocks. Has any one had or heard of this problem?
  • mike1212mike1212 Member Posts: 7
    Bargamon,

Thanks for the info. I'm actually looking at a 430 4Matic. The bumpiness that you describe is exactly what bothered me a little. My old E320 was very smooth. It's the tire/wheel setup. No changes to the suspension that I can tell.

My 320 4Matic was wonderful in the snow. I imagine with the wider tires on the 430, they would "float" a little more.
  • mbnut1mbnut1 Member Posts: 403
You are not alone in your experience with smearing of the single wiper blade. The best solution was offered by my local Benz service manager who recommended making a paste of Tide laundry detergent and cleaning the windshield with it.
  • tomsky3tomsky3 Member Posts: 48
Taison, I too have a java interior. I've had the car for about five weeks. Every weekend, I would vacuum the mats with a Black and Decker auto vacuum cleaner. However, there would still be visible stains on the front mats. I would then spray a small amount of carpet shampoo and rub the stains out. I'm afraid that if I have to keep cleaning the mats, it won't be long before they look worn out.

When I went to my second dealer to retrieve my deposit refund, the salesman told me that a lot of people with java interiors use the black all-weather vinyl mats. I went ahead and purchased a set. My original plan was to use the front all-weather mats only during the winter rainy season here in California. I left the java rear mats alone.

However, I've found that these all-weather front mats are so easy to clean and look rather inconspicuous that I'll probably leave them there permanently.

Can I import a RHD MBenz to US? If yes, can I register the car easily? What problems can I anticipate in driving around with a RHD car? ( I know its going to be a problem to drive thru a fast food drivethru!!!!) I am specifically interested in MBenz E Class. I am also planning to talk to the MB dealer about the Eurpoean delivry. Your help is appreciated

(Incase anybody wondering why I need a RHD car in US??I am from India and is planning to take the car when I go back after say 4-5 years. There are quite a few customs duty reductions when you bring your own used car to India on transfer of residence. Otherwise the duty is almost 120% of the veichle price!!!! Buying a new MB is also very expensive in India. The new S-Class goes for around 6,500,000 Rupees where as you can get a Honda City for 650,000 Rupees. 1$ is equivalent to
45 Indian Rupees. BTW I am not interested in taking a LHD car to India.)

If you petition them hard they may even put in your own toll lane on the freeway. imagine that never having to wait at the tolls.

I do not know the regulations about importing RHD cars into the US. I have, though, occasionally seen some RHD Rolls Royces in the US. Having lived in HK and worked in Southern China, where used RHD cars are imported from HK, I can tell you driving a RHD car on the right side of the road has certain disadvantages. It will be harder to pass cars on the highway, because you will be sitting on the right side of the car and may not be able to see if the passing lane is clear. Besides the drive-in, you will be inconvenienced at the toll booths, although a passenger could help overcome this difficulty. I imagine, though, that you could adjust to these problems. Other people have.
    Good luck with your decision.

    mike1212,

i am considering purchase of E430 4matic as well.

What do you mean by the tires "floating" a little more.

Wider tires don't do as well in snow because they have wider footprints and kind of float more on top of the snow rather than pressing down into it. This is why world rally championship cars run skinny snow tires during the snow stages. Add to that the E430's performance (non-all season) tires and you could have a problem in snow, even with the AWD system. BTW, wide tires are exactly what you want on sand since the vehicle's weight is spread out over a larger footprint and there is reduced tendency for the vehicle to sink into surface and get stuck.
