I do love the car mags, and am not one to be overly cynical about them. I don't think they are just paid "organs" of the auto companies. They usually aren't very negative,so you have got to read between the lines, though. However.I have noticed that every so often they will be unusually negative, but it will always be a safe target. When Peugeot was safely on its way out then the books slammed it. The same with Olds,Espically the Intrigue. Can anyone remember such a bad review as Bedard's in C&D? I almost bought an Intrigue last week. I think it is the most entertaining US car right now. I bought a 5spd. Passat though as I have always wanted a manual shift. I also bought my wife a Catera last week-no more cars far me for the next 8-10 years!I admit i couldn't get her to care about the Intrigue.I thought the car a bit rattley, but other than that, I think Bedard is way wrong. It is an excellent car.

bz4:::::::I had the similiar condition with the 71SS350 from the first day..If memory is correct; went through a bunch of Uniroyal tires, and then they sent me five new tires for trade with the local chevy dealer in trying another brand. Uniroyal ask me not to come back!!!!!

Switched to another brand and finally ended up having the tires trued to the wheels--a heating process and then they were shaved to ensure roundness. At around 50k miles it was discovered that a steering componment was defective and most of the shake disappeared.. Since the car was driven 90k+miles in 24 months; the daily drive to work was 120 miles; so its life was quick and was run flat-out at least three/four times a week; weather permitting..It was a business expense..so I did not cut corners. The car was great and the shake was the only bug-a-boo..Nobody would believe the top speed; so I will not elaborate. I-75 highway in the early 70s was a beautiful highway before suburban growth started..

rbb2:::::When you are through with the Olds people I would appreciate the techs name for they are in for a treat behind the wheel of mine..Don't give up the ship and bale out into a Ford SUV..I also have many Ford friends and they would prefer that I stay away from driving Ford cars of any division...

redly one::::::I have always kicked myself for not buying the 96 SS Impala; the sales at the end were not brisk and they were discounting.. I came close to popping for one.. The Ford product does not excite me; maybe due to its early acceptance that sets the pricing..

The early production of the new GM 360 SUV is less than stellar due to start-up glitches..Also there is a heavy inventory of the old model which is being discounted big-time..

The Trailblazer and it's two cousins aren't even available in a lot of areas yet. Judging a vehicle by how busy the forum is doesn't make any sense. Bottom line is.. the GM triplets are getting great reviews and their main competition are really more like Explorer, Pathfinder and Highlander. I think the new Buick Rendezvous is more closely aimed at MDX/RX-300. I think for the first time in a long time I can say I like a lot of new stuff coming from the General.

As for the MDX quality, it may be good, but it's far from "head and shoulders" above GM. Even the pre-production Bravada I saw at the auto show looked fantastic.

Out of curiousity i went into the ford explorer problem thread. Man, are these people having problems or what? These trucks are pure junk. It is one thing after another.

It just proves the fact that Ford has produced a vehicle that has everything people want. The size, the cargo capacity etc. And people are buying them like crazy. And they are junk!

My point is that oldsmobile failed not because of quality issues, but to non existent marketing.

I think that the marauder is a vehicle i would really like to own, but ford's repair issues leave me cold. I have never owned a ford product.
I have been a chevy man all of my life.

I should have gone into hock in '96 and bought the impala SS.

You are a person of great courage to buy a Catera to experience the Cadillac ownership..I know more people who had buybacks on the Catera versus the Intrigue. I am a two time Intrigue owner and the 99 GLS with the 3.5 is a love/hate relationship. The engine/drivetrain are winners, the brakes are losers, and the ride is like a tractor but it handles like part of the road. I cruise btw 75/85 with triple digits when conditions allow such expression..

When the 98 GLS was repurchased at 26k miles it was in great running order; but I was tired of the affair..

Being a Northstar owner I have been near the Catera; and I decided that the exotic German engineering was beyond the Caddy mechanic's scope of understanding. Besides the dealer doesn't stock any parts so it is always airfreight from somewhere.

Good Luck with your VW and Opel!!!!

Our Intrigue spent another overnight last night. The service manager called yesterday afternoon and said he located the TSB regarding the alternator. Indeed there was a new model to replace our twice defective #395. He said the new one was backordered but went the extra mile and called around for another. He said he found one and sent a driver to pick it up. Only ONE available in the whole Phoenix area?? Anyway, it's supposed to be installed this morning and we'll have the car back by noon. They are also reversing the charge for coolant.

What ever happened to the two other posters that had this problem???
  • 14151415 Member Posts: 249
I really haven't had any problem as yet with the dimming lights; however would appreciate a TSB# so I can tell the dealer to get one in..Mine is a 99 GLS w/3.5 and 39k miles..
  • 14151415 Member Posts: 249
How about Nortel?????? Another disappoint, and anther few points lost..No I don't own any; but if it gets near 10.00 may do it!!!
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
1415 : No rush... I would stay clear of NT for a few months and see what happens. Could be another Lucent.

merkx : Love the Catera. First couple of years had some growing pains but the 2000/01 models are pretty decent. You will enjoy! The CTS next year looks very interesting

bz4 : Our family had good luck with Fords, but the Explorer isn't a stellar product. My mom had 2 decent Ford cars before her Alero. My dad's 97 Winstar seems to be junkie though ( I guess I shouldn't say that since they are made 5 minutes down the road).
  • j_colemanj_coleman Member Posts: 143
Has anyone with a '99 model 3.5 had the alternator issue? I have one and I've never noticed dimming lights or any other symptoms of a bad alternator. I think 1415 is just trying to get a free alternator from the General even though his is just fine. Shame on you! I hope they tell you it ain't broke so they aren't going to fix it. And don't try to pull any of that AARP stuff on the service manager... :-)
  • teoteo Member Posts: 2,508
I think he made good points at criticism, but what was he suggesting......that he has the recipe to solve all GM's problems?

A lot of rants to I can readily agree to some extent, but to me an expert is also capable of formulate real solutions to real problems.

I think it takes a lot of *COJONES* to go into a company sponsored event and start calling the management team of that company 'inepts', 'fouls', etc. Fine if he had the need to do that, but aside from enbarrasing the top brass at GM, what else did he accomplished?

Lots of talk, very little action...I think Mr. Flint is starving for some attention and publicity as well and he certainly obtained that.

Who's next, Ford and DCX Mr. Flint?

Have had my 98 Intrigue for 2.5 years now. Love the car and dealer, who also sells Cadillac--I get Cadillac service! My major gripes about the Intrigue, in increasing order of annoyance:
    0. Poor fuel economy--this is one heavy car!! I only get about 18 mpg in mostly city driving.
    1. Flimsy stereo knobs for bass/treble
    2. Chrome front-door trim warps and impede door opening/closing. This problem has been "fixed" twice, but keeps recurring. Sigh.
    3. Strange crunchy sounds from front end, especially when turning car. Don't know if it's a steering or suspension quirk/problem.

Can anyone offer insights into the door trim and front end problems?

Also--I wish Olds will not disappear. The intrigue is the first domestic car I've owned. We bought it after seeing it used in the X-Files movie! Maybe GM can have Saturn sell the Intrigue. That division needs a good model anyway . . .
  • racer_x_9racer_x_9 Member Posts: 91
Have the revel molding replaced. The "fix" is most likely someone tapping the molding backwards. As you open and close your door every day, it creeps forward. Had both passenger and driver's door replaced a year ago and no problems since.
  • b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
Read back on this thread. But, intermediate steering shaft will fix most noises.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Unfortunately the Intrigue is dead after 2002 model year. I think they should replace the L-series with the Intrigue and market it like crazy. Won't happen though. :-(
  • 14151415 Member Posts: 249
jcoleman::::::::It's got to be a $500+ fix for the silly alternator. The 3.8 alt is not used on the 3.5 and we get stuck for the bill, no way. I have yet to replace an alternator and it isn't time to pay either..

yellowperil:::::::b4z is 1/2 right on the intermediate shaft..You also need a steering gear; I went through two of those in a 98 Intrigue. Two Intrigue owner--paid for one and second one was 98%free. Go after the Olds dealer and he will be glad to put your car in safe running order..
  • j_colemanj_coleman Member Posts: 143
yellowperil: Welcome to the club! But how is 18 mpg in mostly city driving BAD for a 3.8 litre V6 engine??? Was your last car a 1.8 litre 4 cyl?
  • jjpowell2jjpowell2 Member Posts: 91
Just to clear things up..we have a 2001 3.5L Intrigue GL. Got the car back and have to wait until night to confirm that the problem is corrected.

This is what it says on the service invoice:

"New alternator available per new service bulletin. 01-06-03-001 with new circuit which prevents regulator resetting due to voltage spiking from engine vibrations. Performed system test; replaced alternator and retested. 14.50V - 160.3A loaded output." The new part is Gen Rem 2.275 - #10464469.

I must add that the dealership has been most co-operative, especially since it's not the dealer we purchased the car from! Courtesy van and a free wash & detail anytime. Gas mileage around town for us has been running around 22 MPG.
  • vezinivezini Member Posts: 38
My 99 Intrigue, after running an hour or so, generates really hot (to the touch) buttons on the radio and temp controls. Has anybody heard what the issue is? and what the fix may be?
  • vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
Lower your interior light dial a notch or two from the uppermost setting.
  • yellowperilyellowperil Member Posts: 22
Hi Coleman: You're almost correct. My last car was the 2.4L 4-cyl in the 1993 Altima (which I thought was nice, before Nissan cheapened it).

Vezini: I lowered the interior lighting to about 50% to deal with the hot buttons. Wonder why they're that hot to begin with though . . . The bluish-white color looks deceptively cool.

    Damn--I love my Intrigue.
  • b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
Posts by yellow peril and vezini bring back old memories of past intrigue issues. I forget that things us old salts take for granted are new to a lot of buyers.
  • one2oneone2one Member Posts: 626
Actually it's 75030 but who's counting ;-) Still no squeaks or rattles on the 'ol '98 Intrigue w/3800 engine. It's really pretty boring to report that nothing's breaking except the first fan setting that doesn't work. But that's old news.

But that does bring something back to mind. When I go back to get the A/C fixed, I'm going to try to get them to put in the Automatic Climate Control. I figure the auto air unit is controlled by a ROM in the unit itself. I can't see there being a great deal of work to do this over the regular a/c unit. Keep in mind I have a GX with manual air. I'll let you know what happens.

Looks like I might hit that 100,000 mile mark before July... probably more like May. Still haven't changed ANY fluids except the oil. But when I reach the 100K service interval it's probably gonna kick my butt.
  • redly_oneredly_one Member Posts: 122
I have a 99 w/3.5L. Ive been on here before complaining about the flickering headlights. Unfortunately, my car is off warranty (47K). I don't think it is worth what it will take to fix since it is just a commuter car. That is, until the damn thing craps out and leaves my wife on the side of the road.
  • 14151415 Member Posts: 249
Great update--how the struts holding up?? tires and of course the brakes??? I would ask about the engine but you have the "rock for power".

Love to hear the positive stuff for it's easy to bent out of shape!!!!
  • etharmonetharmon Member Posts: 399
I have a 98 Intrigue which has less than 4 months on it's lease now and I'm seriously considering a 2001 GLS to replace it. Will purchase this time. My 98 has been pretty trouble free. The only major component replaced was the intermediate shaft which has been a common problem on 98s. I like the instrument lighting on the Intrigue as well. My previous car had a full digital instrument cluster which lit up light a Christmas tree at night and when I first got the Intrigue, I really liked how it's instruments looked at night as well. I've never been a fan of Pontiac's(and BMW's) orange and red instrumentation. I keep the interior brightness turned all the way up and have never noticed any of the buttoms feeling overly hot.

one2one, good luck on getting the auto climate control installed. From what I understand, there is more than just installing the control panel. Part of the Intrigue's climate control system on the GL and GLS is the dual zone feature which allows separate temperature for the driver's side and passenger side. BTW, I have a base 98(technically those werem't called GX then) which has manual A/C.
  • b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
There is a TSB issued for the alternator, i think that they would replace it for free if you pushed them.

Have scheduled a visit for Tuesday at the dealership. Will let you guys know how many times they write "no problem found" on the service ticket.

Will take off this am. for an overnight and little business Friday morning; back to the states..

dindak::::::The Japanese market got killed last nite; hope it doesn't rub off on us today..I got in about 15 mins. before close; hoping for a strong opening this morn.. Probably shot myself in the foot again!!!
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
1415 : Market looks gloomy this morning. Have a good trip.

etharmon : Are you still considering an Aurora or are you set on another Intrigue now?
  • one2oneone2one Member Posts: 626
Believe it or not, the struts are holding up very well. I was worried I'd have to replace them because of a torn up parking lot. It was dark and raining and a HUGE pothole was in my path. The only problem was the rain filled up the hole and because of the dim lighting I couldn't see it. Talk about bottoming out!!! Fortunately I was going slow. I must say this car can take a beating.

As far as brakes, I'm going to have them checked when I get my tires rotated. That should happen this weekend since I just cleared the 75,000 mark. I've been using aftermarket rotors and Sears brakes and they feel as good (if not better) than the factory brakes. Not to mention it's a WHOOOOOLE lot cheaper than using the General's parts.
  • one2oneone2one Member Posts: 626
I'm trying to figure out what's going on with the gas prices. Most of the stations in Delaware where I work have regular at about $1.46/gal. Back in N.E. Philly it's running for $1.39. Drive 3 miles down the blvd and beyond and the prices jump to $1.46. In my neighborhood, I have a Sunoco and Mobil on opposite sides of the street in a price war. They've got regular set at $1.29/gal. Mid-grade jumps to $1.46 and premium tops at $1.53. I don't know what's going on but I'm taking advantage of it. I got so used to paying over 20 bucks for gas I forgot what it was like to get change back for a twenty.
  • one2oneone2one Member Posts: 626
The Michelin Pilots rock!!! I love 'em! Still taking corners at 90 degrees and absolutely no squealing whatsoever. Tread wear is minimal if even perceptible. Highly recommend the Pilot XGTs. H rating are mine. If you really want to corner, try the V rating. The Chrysler 300M Performance Handling Package comes with them if you want an idea of what to expect. The downside is you'll be in for a hard ride. Don't know if one would want to add to the "firmness" of the Intrigue.
  • ickesickes Member Posts: 82
It looks like Mr. Flint is aiming at FoMoCo next after trashing GM, based on some e-mails we have exchanged. He basically thinks that Ford is making the same errors that GM has made by farming out some of its major powertrain and platform designs. I also get the sense that he thinks Ford may be leaning too heavily on brand marketing and platform engineering as well.

Stopped at the local Olds dealer the other day. The ONLY Intrigues on the lot were all stickered up for courtesy cars for the Final Four this weekend.
  • redly_oneredly_one Member Posts: 122
Do you think they will do it for free?

I have 2 friends that work at a Chevy dealership. That might help me.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
"For the Grand Prix, there was a 70-day supply on March 1, compared with a 157-day supply on Feb. 1. For the Intrigue, the inventory fell to a 41-day supply from an 86-day supply".

looks like inventories are coming down, but Fairfax will be shut for another week.
  • b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
Have you been in the "Cadillac Northstar oil usage " thread yet? I am sure you can share your experience with the guy who started the thread.
  • jjpowell2jjpowell2 Member Posts: 91
Don't expect a fix just yet. Got ours back after the overnight and new model alternator. Guess what?? Lights dimmed twice again last night. Made calls to 1-800 Oldsmobile to start file and waiting to hear back from the service manager at dealership. He wanted us to bring our car back on Monday but I told him I wanted to know what they expect to do in the way of fixing before being car-less again!
  • j_colemanj_coleman Member Posts: 143
jjpowell2: Sounds like you might have a short somewhere in the electrical system. Are you sure it isn't just the normal dimming associated with idling or running the A/C compressor? Or are we talking about a blackout? Has your battery been replaced? Mine went bad after about a year.
  • jjpowell2jjpowell2 Member Posts: 91
The techs are the ones that found the fluctuation in alternator voltage. Happens when no other accessories are on and driving at 30-40mph. The lights actually seem to go almost out and you can notice a slight decrease in engine power. If it is the battery that would be a simple fix...Still waiting to hear from them.

Was it 1415 who said his 3.5 was going through oil? I just rolled over to about 1600 mi. on my 2001 GL and so far the dipstick is at full. I sure hope this continues. I start getting annoyed when a car uses more than 1/2 qt. or so every 3k mis.
My overall experience so far is that I like this car more and more. The Intrigue handles very well at highway speeds. Good fun factor for a sedan. I mean it sticks to the road like glue at 75, the speed I try drive. It beats the heck out of a '97 Avalon I used to have as far as handling and power. Felt kinda nervous at first when I bought the car, given that it's an orphan. Having fun now - I even invent reasons to take a drive. Crossing my fingers that the little hobgoblins discussed here stay away and I can keep her out of the shop. I might be singing a different tune if the problems hit.
BTW, tried comparing the "plus" grade 89 oct. gas to regular 87 oct. I could discern no difference whatsover in performance. Saving money and using regular now. Curious if anyone uses midgrade or higher gas in the 3.5?
  • 14151415 Member Posts: 249
Funny you should ask about oil consumption; just checked after the business/pleasure trip to the Niagara Falls area which added 560 miles to make it 2,279miles since oil change; and it is down 1qt..not bad at all..Most of time is spent on cruise at 2250/2500 with the spells to cutoff..The Canadian roads are excellent speedways and the OPP is asleep most of the time..

I use 87 octane only; for after 43 cars, this senior citizen has been through the learning curves of trying to break the mold. They say 87 give it 87...
  • b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
Looks like you are experiencing the same phenomena as me. An intrigue that uses less oil once it gets over 20,000 miles.
I put only 87 octane in mine. I figure that will save me between $450-500 over the 3 years i will own the car. Maybe even a little more.
I guess those acura owners don't care about things like that.

Ghostz: You said it, the intrigue is just a super high speed car. Totally different feeling than the choppy accord V6 that i drove the same day i test drove the intrigue.

I have a 99 Intrigue with 30K miles. The car had some problems from the start (alternator, steering column, etc). As far as the last 20K miles, the car has been solid; I really do enjoy it!

My trust in reliability is a little in doubt due to the comments of Consumer Reports and others. And as a result, I am considering buying an extended warranty, prior to hitting the 36K factory limit. Any ideas on sources for an extended warranty other than GM or the dealer?

I would also be interested in build quality comments; is it wise to risk another 50-60K miles without a warranty?
  • limadeltalimadelta Member Posts: 49
I, too, have had my alternator replaced because of flickering. The new alternator that was supposed to have the 'fix' has made no change to the flickering.

My dealer is getting the thing back as soon as I have a couple of days to let it lay around. Sure wish someone could really fix the flickering.

I'll check my owners manual for the 800 number and start a file on my alternator. Great car with niggling problems.

Gotta tell ya that I drove to Vegas last week and was averaging between 85-95 with an 'occasional' roll past the ton mark. Once again - A Great Car saddled with an Idiot Marketing Department.
  • j_colemanj_coleman Member Posts: 143
vezini - I bought an extended warranty for my '99 GL from warrantygold.com. I paid $824 for their 7 year/70K mile Diamond plan, which is bumper-to-bumper but excludes certain items like brake pads/rotors, trim, glass, tires, etc... I have a zero deductible also. Since I'm still under factory warranty I haven't had a chance to use it. I believe there is a forum here that discusses extended warranties, you should check it out.

Had to get up a 4:30 am today for an MRI on my right knee which I bruised in Feb and rebruised last week in Canada; both times playing around; initially jammed it into a tile floor.. Surgery on the horizon..

Now let's talk about cars and petrol; my 560 miles of flat-out fun driving the 401,402,403, and the QEW netted 27.46mpgs; and the Canadian fuel is selling for $1.81gal in US funds and the Stateside pricing at Mobil this am was $1.50gal..

The camel jockies are getting into our pockets again; thanks to the enviro whacko bunch..

vezini::::::if you have had all the little problems fixed like steering, alternator, and battery; live in a warmer climate and don't abuse the car, then I would go for one of those off-the-wall type warranties..Non-GM..Some of the worries are the a/c compressor, alternator, and the radiator due to the cast aluminium block..If the 3.5 is not using oil then it should be fine until 100k min..If you have 99 with the 3.8; save your money..

I bought a GM warranty for a good price; but I may cancel it for personal reasons..

bz4::::::I will look at the Caddy forum on Northstar oil burners..My better half isn't driving it much; maybe 100 miles a week..Next trip to my source around Niagara Falls I will have to take her car just to give it a chance to breathe..

The Japanese stock market is about to go belly-up and it's taking a drastic toll of our markets..Their banks and government are totally upside down in the red ink and our people keep buying their cars which are obviously priced too
low which in turn is killing the "Big 3". You young ones in the business world who are bent on buying the Oriental cars are slowly driving this country into the ground. The next generation will be flipping hamburgers!!!!
  • vezinivezini Member Posts: 38
Thanks for the comments on the warranty. The warranty gold option is very interesting.

I just saw the new Bravada; ... Wow, does it look great!! It is a real shame that the Olds line is going away, they have the best looking vehicles in the entire GM fleet. Buick & Chevy could really use some of the Olds design talent.
  • etharmonetharmon Member Posts: 399
I'm with you on those "camel jockies." Seems OPEC has decided to CUT production, but I'm glad Spencer Abraham and the Bush administration aren't going to go beg and plead with them for more oil. We are the US dammit, we shouldn't be begging anyone!! Oh and now the liberals are all criticizing Bush because he wouldn't sign some environmental treaty. Ever notice how the Asian and Europeans are always in support of these treaties. Hell, thats good enough reason not to sign them. Here is a question for all the liberals who are so against the internal combustion engine; if we all go to electric(zero emissions) cars where is this electricity going to come from? This is a very critical question for California and if we keep listening to the tree huggers and the liberals who want price controls and don't want to build new power plants, the problem will soon be in other regions as well.
  • etharmonetharmon Member Posts: 399
I still have not detected a serious flicker on my 98. The only time I have noticed the lights flicker slightly is when the ABS or traction control kicks on. I've noticed that when running the engine in park and then shifting into gear(which causes engine speed to drop) the headlights dim ever so slightly. The car seems to have always done this and I don't view it as a problem. My old car did this and my father's Aurora does this as well. I'm assuming the problem some of you are describing is alot more serious than this.
  • jjpowell2jjpowell2 Member Posts: 91
Ours is a 2001. The problem is more than a flicker. It almost looks like you're flashing your lights or turning them off/on. There's a noticable loss in engine power. It's a real bugaboo that could be a safety issue. It's going back into the dealer so the tech can drive it at night. They'll be giving us a loaner until it's repaired.

There is a kicker to this story. We bought the car with 440 miles on it. It was driven by the dealership and SOMEONE knew of this problem. It should have been corrected or disclosed to us!!
