They lengthend the suspension travel of the front struts by a couple milimeters and added springs internally to the struts to firm up the rebound damping. When 98 rolled around they started to soften the damping again as the it's a comftorable cruiser faction won by default as all the young talent continued to abandon the ship. By that time I believe the sporty mid sized had been designed and the cruise missle full size killed. Without performance oriented people like John Rock at the division the suspension on the next full size might have been SOFTER than the Caddys.

78,200 on my 1998 built in 8/97 (hard to believe I'm driving a 7 year old car... sure doesn't look or feel like an older car). When I bought it almost 3 years ago (April 4 :-), it had 27,200 miles on it (and had been sitting on the dealer lot for nearly a year). My car makes lots of trips to Lambeau Field during football season :-)

I haven't seen anything on any of the posts comparing oil pressure of conventional oil with synthetic oil. When I had both my '95 and '97 Northstar oil leak fixed, the warranty company would not replace the synthetic oil, so I had them put in conventional oil of the same brand. I put about 1000 miles a month on my vehicles on trips. I noticed the synthetic oil pressure runs about 5-7 psi higher than conventional oil at highway speeds (70-75). Just another reason to be using the synthetic over conventional.

    Just an observation only!!!!!!!!

Do I have the lowest mileage '95?

where's the actual date? Different parts have different date. The fuel lines have 9/94 but some interior panels have 11/94 and the console has 12/94.

the build date of your car should be on a sticker on the edge of the driver's door. That is the date the car was put together.
  • blk97aurorablk97aurora Member Posts: 573
    Shawn,

On my '97 the build month is printed on a white paper label affixed to the end of the driver's door. It lists the month and year, VIN, gross vehicle weights, and a statement about safety standards.

    Hi all,

Currently, I have 465 miles on my Collector's Edition Aurora built March 2003. I took a recent trip to the Atlanta International Autoshow in it. Its first real roadtrip! I drove pretty good except for the vibration that everyone has been mentioning regarding 2001-2003 Auroras with the 17' tires. It should have driven velvety smooth for a brand new car. I was a bit disappointed.

In April or May, I will have its first maintenance service done. I will have the oil changed and replaced with 5W30 Mobil 1 Synthetic that many have mentioned. I may have the dealer check the balancing of the tires too. They do have a Roadforce balance machine according the website for the company that makes it that has been posted here before.

All in all, I still LOVE my Aurora. Will not be driving it much from now on to keep the miles off of it. I want to keep it as my collectible for many, many years to come. I may buy another 2003 Aurora used in a few years so that I can really enjoy the luxury of the Aurora fully every day. We will see. The 2004 Bonneville GXP looks very tasty too! Can't wait to test drive one of those.

How often do you actually move the car? It may be that your tires vibrate because they've sat in one spot for a long time. Just a thought. If not, a road-force balance should help a lot.

You guys with two Auroras, man that's sweet. I think if my wife's car crapped out today and we had to replace it, that would be at the top of our list.

To remove the headliner, the following thins have to come off:
    - remove front passenger seat (not sure why)
    - remove windshield pillar trim panels
    - remove center pillar trim panels
    - remove the rear 1/4 panel upper trim panels
    - remove the sunshades
    - remove the overhead console
    - pull the door opening moldings down to clear the headliner
    - remove assist handles
    - remove high-mounted stop light
    - disconnect headliner wiring harness connectors
    - pull the headliner down in order to release it

There is the following warning: Use care when removing removing or installing the headliner. Excessive bending will damage the headliner.

My door shows a 3/94 build date and last 5 digits of the VIN: 00471

Mileage is currently at 122,500. Was 118,500 when I bought the car in November. I've been lurking in the background since then reading all the past messages. I haven't had a single problem yet, but when I do, I feel like I will be at least one step ahead with the help of this forum.

Thanks for all the GM part numbers and other great info.

kgatwork -- ooooo, beat me by a couple thousand.

Larryfl -- Haven't had many problems. But, alas, I'm retiring the Aurora -- seems kind of a silly car to have for a 7 mile commute. It's for sale if you want it! ;)

There is a 1998 Classic being sold on ebay. the seller says the car has a split fold down rear seat. This is news to me. I didi not know any of the Classics has a fold down rear seat. Is this guy correct? What about the Y2K's?
  • aurora5000aurora5000 Member Posts: 168
I would wait another 3-5K miles on the car before changing to Mobil 1 Syn. It took my 2002 4.0, 5K before it seated in the rings. With the very agressive hone pattern on the cylinder walls, it will take longer to seat the rings in real good.

    Thanks,
    Steve

RJS- have you gotten my emails the last 60 days?

rjs200240 - you realize by posting your email address like that your likely to increase your spam problem? Of course if it's as bad as mine, it might not matter anymore!!

Here in the Town Hall, the best way to share an email address with someone is to make it public in your profile. The spam bots can't get to it there, but they sure can and do from the regular web pages. You can always go back and make it private again after the person has seen it. That's far safer than leaving on this web page forever.

I just looked at the above car. It was clean on the inside but had been repainted. I have to admit it did look like 37K and not 137K judging from the condition of the leater inside the car.

The salesman gave me the little old man from Passidina story as to why the milage was low.

Hey PAT Edmunds only goes back to 1990. Whats up with that?

What price do you "good Olds guys" think is good? If I got the car I would retire the Aurora.

    Henri
  • rjs200240rjs200240 Member Posts: 1,277
I didn't really think about that Pat. I shot you a mail. :)

Henri, would you want a 1985 Eldorado to replace your Aurora? They are slower, less attractive, much older, and so on. You didn't mention it was a convertible. So I'd be looking at 1995 Eldorados before I'd be looking at 1985 ones... Just my opinion...

Plus if get a 95 El Dog you will have the coveted 4.6 L Northstar.
  • HenryHenry Member Posts: 1,106
However, I am looking at having a beater car that is still nice and not high on the "lets steel it for parts/joyride" list. Remember, they stole my 1987, delta 88 that I brought as a beater car.

Anyway, the dealership stickered the car at $3,995. Kelly's said trade in value about $500 and average dealer is $1,400. So these guys are way off the mark with their pricing. I doubt that they would come down to less than half their asking price.

If I were to get a modern caddie as a beater car it would be the STS. Like a 94 or something like that. That way I will still have the oil leak to remind me of my 95 Classic.
  • rjs200240rjs200240 Member Posts: 1,277
Maybe I don't get it? You want to replace the Aurora with a crappier car so that it doesn't get stolen? That seems very odd to me. Also, do you mean daily driver, not beater? A beater is usually not the daily driver, but rather the crappy day driver. If it's your beater, what's the garage queen? You said you'd "retire" the Aurora, so I took that to mean "sell". Maybe you mean retire it from daily driver status?

    I don't get it...

Henri - ask that question in the feedback section of the Help link at the top of the page.

Yup, to you. I sent it again, but actually I'll just post it here. Can you clip my email address out of my post then? I have Steve's email so I can just mail him. I can't edit my post anymore, and don't really want to just delete the whole thing. Thanks! :D

rjs - got it and answered you. Bottom line is no, messages can't be edited except for that 30 minute window immediately after posting, and then only by the poster. IOW, only *you* can edit a message you post and if that 30 minutes has passed, your only other choice is delete. Of course you can always repost after deleting if that's the thing to do. Sorry. :(

Steve: I got a couple from you a bit back and I replied. Since you replied to my replies, I assume you got them. ;) However, I haven't seen any mail from you in about a month or so. So if you've sent some, something must be going on... :\ Since we seem to have spam filter issues, and you have an aol acc't, I'll email you from my aol acc't. If we are in each other's respective address books, then the mail will never get filtered out even if we started emailing about viagra and prozac. :)

Henri, I have never heard of an Aurora having fold-down rear seats. The 2001-03 does not have them. It only has a trunk pass-through. Fold-down rear seats mean that the seatbacks have to be flat and somewhat thin. Fold-down rear seats and comfortable rear seats are usually mutually exclusive. Besides, who would use their Aurora for hauling stuff around?
  • HenryHenry Member Posts: 1,106
I mean to say that I want to retire Aurora as a daily driver and limit its use to Road trips. The 85 would suit my purposes as a daily driver. It would not be as fast as aROARa, but it would be fine on the streets of Brooklyn.

I can't speak for others but my experience with my new 2002 4.0 Aurora was a use of oil the first 5K miles. After that, the usage of oil dropped off to almost nothing. This is when I switched to Mobil 1 syn. and filter.
With the agressive honing of cylinders, I expect oil usage (dino or syn.) to be a little. I use my oil life monitor which is set up for dino oil and get between 7 to 9K miles on the oil with about 10% oil life from the monitor system.
With 30K on car, my last oil change was 8k and it used 1/4 quart. Not too bad. Remember the oil in the Northstar engine is circulated 5 times in 60 seconds, quite an oil flow.

138k on a 95, build date 2-95 (not one of the early ones :D ). last 5 digits of vin, 31,617.

mines a autobahn too, anyone know what % are autobahns? seems like most are, at lest 1/2. the extra gearing is really needed!!
  • javidoggjavidogg Member Posts: 366
Okay my build date is 02/99, FYI.
  • HenryHenry Member Posts: 1,106
With a build date of 2/99 is it safe to assume that you do not have the NorthStar oil leak? Someone posted that the oil leak was fixed during mid to late 1998.
  • 95mushroom95mushroom Member Posts: 230
11/94 built with 98k. Every op. except heated seats (So. FL car).

Cant for my 100k anniversary. I plan to add full exhaust(mangaflow not corsa$$$) and most likely, new shoes. If anyone knows what the wheels on the razzi aurora are that would be a big help.
  • javidoggjavidogg Member Posts: 366
Man, that's sounds good to me, that I don't have to worry about the oil leaks.

I'm currently getting ready for a mini tune up now,

    1. Fuel Filter
    2. PCV Valve
    3. Trans Tune Up (Trans Kit, Filters, Gaskets)
    4. Will Check my spark plugs and wires

    All under preventive maintaince.

    Peace.
