Got it. I left out a letter in his address.
He saw mine, and emailed me. We have been corresponding.

    Thanks.

Will they come in "Extra Husky" size for those who are above average in stature? Also are you going to make them in real world colors? I only see the SS shirts at the dealer and they are almost always black, yuck, not to mention wayyy too hot for AZ! I'd be interested, you know, if they weren't too bland or if I was sure there wouldn't be too many of them sold...hee hee

I, too, have noticed a distinct lack of new Impala's in the showrooms over the past few months. While waiting for my new 2002 Police Impala to arrive, I chatted a bit with my local fleet manager. He told me (take this for what it's worth) that NYPD lost a large number of police cars in the 9-11 tragedy and that Chev had promised to provide a large number of Impala replacements as quickly as possible. He told me that they use the same physical production lines for both the civilian and police package cars..i.e., when the police ones are being built, no civilian ones are. Since they were running the lines for police cars much longer than normal (both for the extra's for NYPD as well as other PD's nationwide), the civilian supply suffered..therefore the reason the dealers didn't have much in the way of stock on hand. Again, I have not attempted to verify his story..sounds good though. Anyway, supposedly this is now turning around and we should (especially with the added production shift in Oshawa)start seeing more stock on hand.

About 100 miles AFTER I turned over 36,000 in my 2000 Impala (this past weekend), the air bag light flickered off and on, and now stays on constantly. I know this problem has cropped up before, and I think it has to do with a loose wire/short under one of the seats.

Can anyone confirm this, and can you tell me if this is something I can easily fix myself, or will I have to take it in to the dealer?
  • night_owl1night_owl1 Member Posts: 760
Personally, I would take it in and have the dealer look at it. The service manual has some pretty strong warnings about the air bag system. Do something wrong and you can set the bag off.

Yeah, I have had to do that number a couple of times to find the LS. I tend to park in the boonies most of the time, so I just look for the black car that is miles away from everyone else. The girlfriend just loves it!

Speaking of the better half, she neglected to check the pockets before washing the weekend jeans and the Key Fob went through a wash AND dry cycle... I was skeptical that it would still work.. it DOES! Couldn't believe it. I thought the batteries needed changing a few days before the washing since I had to be really close for the car to respond to the fob commands, but now that it has been "cleaned", it works just like it was new... WEIRD.
  • night_owl1night_owl1 Member Posts: 760
Hahaha. That's pretty funny. Can you see a How-To article on that?
  • roderacerroderacer Member Posts: 311
Yeah, right... "Weak Key Fob? Simply add fob to next load of delicates on cold, promply remove and dry on low."

    LOL!

I've had a VW and two Hondas in the past few years and the GM fob has by far the greatest range. I haven't tested it for max but it is at least 100', whereas the VW was 10-15 and the Hondas about 15. Guess less range is preferable if there's a codegrabbing goon nearby. --LAMRON

I have noticed that when using the key fob to unlock the doors, the driver's door always unlocks on the first try, and up to fifty feet away. But frequently, to unlock the passenger doors, I have to make repeated attempts, and this while standing right next to the car. Has anyone else noticed this?

Secondly, the auto volume control on the stereo has three levels; low, medium, and high, but all three levels seem to have the same result. Setting it on low isn't any different that setting it on high. The volume stays at what ever level it is at the time of setting it. The owners manual doesn't go into any detail about the differences. What is the purpose of the three different levels?

    I appreciate your comments. Cliff

My 2000 ls occasionally fails to unlock the passenger door when using the key fob. I think it is necessary to push the fob button firmly. Another strange thing happens occasionally....When I stop & park, hit the trunk release button on the dash, then lock the doors, and go to open the trunk lid,the alarm starts. It is easy to stop, but annoying. The cause is the trunk is not popping up far enough. Not a big thing, not worth taking to the dealer. Anyone else experienced the same? Enjoy the ride.

I've had the same thing happen with the trunk. Very annoying to the neighbours when it happens at 1:00 am.

With the auto volume control, it doesn't actually move the volume bar. I find that for my driving and music, having it on medium with the windows up, and high with the windows/sunroof open works the best. Anyway, the volume BAR itself doesn't move, but if you set the control to HIGH and speed up you can hear the radio getting louder. Dunno how it's exactly set, but when you pass certain speeds it'll bump up a little louder.
  • nosirrahgnosirrahg Member Posts: 872
Next time you're cruising at highway speeds, try switching the auto volume control from low-medium-high. I think you'll notice the difference at that point. (I generally keep mine on the medium setting, but I'm a little hard of hearing - also adjusted the turn signal volume and warning chimes to the louder setting.)

Got a 2002 Impala LS. Y'all know those tacky window visor warning stickers on there? Well I tried to peel those off, and the sticker tore apart into many pieces and is still very much stuck to my visor. My car is 3 months old. I would like some suggestions on what to do next, and if there's nothing that can be done (hope there is) does anyone know how much a new visor will cost? Thanks
  • atbearatbear Member Posts: 322
The way you set the auto volume control is to set it to the volume you would like to hear it at, while you are stopped, and set it to the low setting. Then as you speed up the volume rises and the percieved volume always remains the same.

I have a different car, Malibu, but with the same auto volume control.

The low setting is good enough when driving on highway with close windows, the medium setting is for open windows. The high setting lets hear music even in dense traffic, with 18-wheelers around, but in such conditions I prefer to close the window.

You can go into the RDS system and disable the Trunk Alarm, Just scroll thru until you see "TRNK JMB" and press the button, I think it is OFF or ON and if you select OFF the Horn will not activate after you pop the trunk and lock the doors, I had that happen a few times, By the way, what good is a trunk alarm? maybe a fuel door alarm?, how many theifs access a car from the trunk? maybe that beat up 1980's Cutlass Supreme that is missing the entire trunk lock assembley,(has a nice quarter sized hole in the trunklid, and is pryed out of round) that also has the trunk lid secured by a bungee cord... well for that matter, missing the entire ignition assembly...and has been stolen 3 times... I'm past warranty as well and I have been getting that warning light a bunch of times, usually after going over some rough road, I was worried the first time I saw it then remembered what every other person had said, I just put my hand under the seat and jiggle the wires a bit and it goes off, every time. The wire assembly is on the right side of the center of the seat. If it were to go off from doing this(the airbag itself) I'd think I'd have a pretty good lawsuit in spite of me jiggling it, who's to say it doesn't fire when going over rough road? At this point past warranty I'm not bringing the car back to the dealer for anything.

atbear, for your sake I hope any replacement visors don't come with the stickers! You know I haven't even noticed if mine are there still or not, I don't recall removing them...

<<I have noticed that when using the key fob to unlock the doors, the driver's door always unlocks on the first try, and up to fifty feet away. But frequently, to unlock the passenger doors, I have to make repeated attempts>>

If you had read your owners manual, pressing the key fob once will unlock the driver's door. Pressing the key fob once more within 5 seconds will unlock all doors.
  • atbearatbear Member Posts: 322
Well, if I get new visors, the stickers should be able to be removed easily.... I think I just waited too long. I bought some Goo Gone tonight.. I hope that helps...

I now have 78,000+ miles and not a problem-none.It is the perfect business use car 32+mpg on the interstates.I kind of like some of the Korean offerings so have spent some time in the import topics.I liked the DAEWOO Leganza and the HYUNDAI Sonata-for a family car.
What surprises me is the comments from certain Japanese car owners regarding the superiority of their mid-size cars. The Impala offers so much more and so much less. The GM 6cyl engines and transmissions are bullet proof compared to most Japanese cars costing much more. The maintenance costs are extremely low and my dealer service has been fine-a car wash with each oil change and free coffee and doughnuts -can it get better then this?Igot 60,000 on my original tires and still have the original brake linings and rotors.Recently my low coolant light came on.I think this is merely a sensor and will replace -at some point. All I can say is I would not take an Avalon,Maxima etc and cash forthis car.If I have a gripe it's -whats with those tailights and it would be nice if the trunk lid popped up an extra inch.

Isn't there anyone from NJ interested in getting together with their new Impala's. Are all the new Impalas located somewhere else in the country?

Build date 12/01, Silver color - Turned rotors at 14,000 miles, replaced at 24,000 miles with no hassle from the dealer. No other problems. Great car overall. Use WD40 on the black strips.

I bought an extra key fob for my 2k-LS but it was for a 2001-2002. I paid $10 on ebay for it and it is new. If anyone needs an extra fob, drop me an email. I bought the correct one for my 2000 and it is in the mail. The #'s on the remote are 10443537 - KOBLEAR1XT. if these match yours it will work. You just program it using your radio.

I have been tracking my fuel economy since delivery of my 2001 LS last June. My best, 7.8l/100km was a trip from Ottawa to London via 401 where my average speed was 80Kmph. So far my average (hwy/city) for the year has been 12 L/100km. GM claims 12.7 L/100km city and 7.4 l/100km highway so I am happy. By the way all my figures have been computed manually since the driver's information center has an average error of 19.8% when computing the L/100km. The only readings that can be called accurate from that thing are temperature, average peed and direction.

I found that annoying alarm was triggered when I didn't leave enough time (4-5 seconds) between locking the doors with the FOB and then opening the trunk with the FOB. I haven't had it happen since the body control module was replaced and the remote entry system was reprogrammed.
The BCM was replaced because the service engine light would come on when the daytime running lights were on (not the headlights) and I turned on the parking lights in order to get the taillights on. Turning off the parking lights didn't get rid of the service light.

You can program your fobs to either unlock only the driver side door first (an excellent safety feature for women driving alone) without opening all the others, or you can program the fob to unlock all four doors on the first click. Mine is programmed to unlock driver door first and then I have to click it twice to unlock the passenger doors. Sometimes, if you click too fast, you'll click three or four times. However, normally, you'll only click two additional times.

I just got home from a 15 minute drive from the girlfriends. It's been downpooring for about 6-7 hours. There was finally a break in the storms so I decided to come home. Well coming down a mountain I was driving along looking hard for fallen rocks. Don't wanna run over those you know. Anyway I never saw the tree limb because it wasn't on the ground, just sticking out into the middle of the lane. There are marks down teh whole right side of my blue imp. I hope I can get these waxed out. They don't appear to be very deep. So we'll see. It gives me chills when I think about it though.

I have a cousin who was driving down a 2-lane country road on a clear day, when a dead tree fell right on top of her car. No warning, just one of those freak things. She wasn't hurt, but the car was totalled.

Also, 30+ years ago my grandmother was driving her '55 Chevy when a pulp wood truck lost it's load, most of which fell onto her car. She was hospitalized, and had aches and pains from it for the rest of her life (and the Chevy was totalled).

Actually, come to think of it, my dad was seriously injured 20+ years ago when cutting down a huge oak tree in our front yard that had been struck by lightning (he had a tractor chained to it as they were cutting it to keep it from falling on the house, but it twisted when it fell and fell on him and the tractor). Maybe we should move the family to Kansas where we'd be safe!!

2001 Navy Blue LS, build date 04/01. Picked her up one year ago today.

    - 37,201 km (about 23,125 miles)
    - calculated lifetime average mileage 10.48 litres per 100km (22.66 miles per US gallon)
    - 12 coats of Zaino polish
    - 7 oil changes
    - 1 ISS lube kit

I really love driving this car. I have zero regrets with my purchase.

    Hi all.

I was reading the maintenance schedule for the 'ol LS and noticed that there is plenty of "stuff" to do in between the oil changes and tire rotations, etc.

Namely, lubing the door, hood and trunk hinges as well as lubing the weatherstripping. All of the maintenance procedures suggect the GM product "or equivalent". Is there any reference to these so called equivalents? I am sure that an "OTC" product may be substituted for many of the GM lubricants (except maybe the weatherstrip silicone), but there is no indication of what the equivalents are.

    Anybody have any ideas? Nathan?

    Thanks,
    Steve

Are you talking about the maintenance schedule in the Owner's manual? I don't have it with me so I can't cross-reference the list.
  • roderacerroderacer Member Posts: 311
right. there is a section in the manual after the mileage benchmark maintenance that describes the lubrication and all of that. It has the GM part #'s to be used for the maintenance.

I left the manu at home so I can't provide a specific GM part# off hand... sorry.
  • I believe thhey come from the factory programmed so that the first push of the unlock button ONLY unlocks the driver's door. A second push within 5 seconds opens all the doors.

Is the base 3.4-liter V-6 engine in the present Impalas still an all cast-iron unit, like the old Lumina 3.1-liter was?
  • norbnancynorbnancy Member Posts: 118
I know of no list of products with a cross reference to GM products. Some after market items specify that they meet GM specs and/or Ford specs. I think one of them is automatic transmission fluid and power steering fluid. I use a silicone that comes in a tube ( like tooth paste), for the door and trunk weather strips and other rubber parts. I also use it on the door hold open check links. The product I use is "Sil-glyde" I buy it at the NAPA parts store under part # 765-1351. I have been using it for over 25 years. If you use silicone, use it very sparingly and rub it in good. Rubber parts won't dry out. I would suppose it would be very useful in hot/dry regions. However, auto suppliers in those regions may have something better to keep rubber from drying & cracking. Enjoy the ride.

Kansas? Right in the middle of the tornado belt? You're right, that's a pretty safe place to live (and mighty friendly too), but if you were to go there, I'd make sure there were no trees on the property and a good basement.

Wow, sorry to hear about your family's luck with trees. That's quite a story.

Just crossed the 30,000 mile mark with my '01 LS. Since getting the new steering gear (front end click) it's been great. Absolutely wonderful car. It might run forever, and if it does, I'll own it that long.

Oh, and I had a comment on the uniqueness thing. I like owning the most popular, best selling car. I know there are bazillions of them around, many my exact color. But it doesn't make me feel hum-drum. It simply reinforces the decision I made to buy a great car, and the good taste of others that made the same decision. Plus, I can still be unique by having the shiniest, newest looking '01 LS for many years. Woo hoo!

Did you get your AutoTap yet? I just had a chance to help with a complicated and evasive engine hesitation problem on a 3800 series II on a '98 Intrigue. With the AutoTap and the Helm manuals, we eliminated thousands of dollars worth of typical parts (sensors and the PCM) as the problem persisted without ever logging any DTCs. The AutoTap showed normal operation for many components and allowed us to narrow the problem to a single cylinder and a few inexpensive parts. The tool paid for itself a few times over with this one fix.

If you haven't got one yet, I'd recommend it. I didn't realize how useful it would be until I had a real problem to track using it. It was great.

    Hey Nathan,
Where do we stand on the indiglo gauges?? In production yet?
  • johnclineiijohnclineii Member Posts: 2,287
Look at Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Big sellers for many years. Styling and parts change seldom, big production runs. So what happens?

I will tell you what happens. Thieves pick them so they end up as the most stolen. Parts can easily be fenced and there is high demand for them.

Usually the most stolen list includes cars from about four years old back. Newer cars don't need that many parts.

See what WE have to look forward to?

    Have a NICE day! :)

Funny how you mention this. I am planning on ordering the 123 sometime this week. Other than the diagnostic features, I want to use it to measure performance issues. For instance, if I change out the air intake system, I want have some actual numbers to compare peformance changes. I like the data logging feature. Keeps logging until you run out of hard drive space.
