I don't see an intake manifold on their site.

Can anybody tell me if the cloth seats are stain resistant, e.g., scotchguarded?
  • drivinisfundrivinisfun Member Posts: 372
They don't come with scotchguard from factory, but you can buy a spray can of 3M Scotchguard and spray it over the seating surfaces.

The material is unimpressive and tends to get wrinkled over time around seat edges and such.

Otherwise, it has been durable and small messes have been very easy to clean up, even without the scotchguard.
  • night_owl1night_owl1 Member Posts: 760
The type of Scotchguard that was applied on upholstery was discontinued by 3M due to environmental concerns. There is a stain fighting treatment applied to the cloth material of the seats, but I don't know how it compares to the old Scotchguard.

The over the counter Scotchguard that comes in spray cans is a different formula. You could try it, but check for colorfastness first.
  • pluto5pluto5 Member Posts: 618
Have a 9 yr. old can of Scotchguard in the basement; may try that.

They are about to completely update their site and add about 15 new products. A high velocity intake manifold will be one of them. Check out the Stage 2 L36 Performance Package under the Coming Soon section. That's what I'll be getting in mid January.

Interesting. Wonder what it will be made of and how much it will cost.

    Hi Gang,

Its been a while since I posted, but wanted to let you know I'm taking my Impala in for what I believe is the manifold problem.

My Impala's symptoms are very similar to drivinisfun's, about a month ago the Low Coolant Level warning came on, the recovery tank was low and I put in a cup of dexcool which brought it to the cold mark. Now it is low again. No coolant is visable, and I don't even smell it.

I am past the warranty milage (41,000). Took delivery of the car 5/1/01, about 95% highway miles. I service the car by the book and then some.. hoping this isn't going to cost the 800 dollars I think it is but I will let you know..

Remember the photos of the 5.7L V-8 powered Impala? It never made it to production, but it was something we all wanted to know more about. Check out the site for the inside scoop on the SS Impala show car.

WOW, I didn't know they used the 4T65E transmission on that thing! That tranny woulda lasted about 2 hard starts and then fallen apart.... it shoulda at least had the HD version, but that wouldn't have lasted long either.... 372HP!!!! WOW.

Finally got a copy of the repair ticket for the upper manifold replacement...here is what it says:

"Coolant leak. Customer with eng. Using coolant jug is low again. Pressure tested system found coolant leaking through upper plenum. Necc to replace plenum and gasket.

    1 Manifold (Part #17113136)
    1 Coolant (Part #12346290)"

They did not specify the new gasket's part number which also had to be replaced along with the plastic plenum.

By the way, the new Manifold's part number is the same exact part number described in the 3.8L Composite Manifold replacement TSB posted in Nightowl's website. So in other words, I was given the same exact plastic manifold that lasted 20 months the first time. How long will this one last?

GM has not updated this part in a very long time and evidently the problem continues and will do so until the cows come home.
  • pluto5pluto5 Member Posts: 618
You didn't specify cost so are we to assume this was a "goodwill" repair?
  • ghostwolfghostwolf Member Posts: 91
Thanks drivinisfun, my appointment is for Thursday morning so I'll let you know what they say, and if its the exact same issue, what the cost will be.

I really wish that GM would fix this for free, since I've researched on the internet and found that this is very common for non-supercharged series II engines.

happy new year to you all

Make sure you get the old part if you have to pay for repair and tell the dealer you're going to sue GM in small claims court for latent defect in plastic engine. Pop for a transcript and post it on the web for all your friends in cyberspace!
  • drivinisfundrivinisfun Member Posts: 372
The upper Manifold Plenum replacement was covered under the factory 3 year/36,000 mile basic warranty.

The car had 18,500 miles when the manifold was replaced.

The car is 20 months old and has another year and a half left in the warranty.

It's been some time since I have posted on here. My '01 Impala LS now has about 19,000 miles on it. I have a condition with the car that when I shut it off after a drive I can smell antifreeze. I keep a constant eye on the overflow jug but have only had to put in small amounts, typically about a quart max over the last year. I brought it to the dealer and showed them some water stains on the side of the water pump right where is joins the front cover on the motor. They replaced the water pump without a question. I have started to smell the antifreeze again and noticed a small water mark again in the same spot, but am unsure if this a leftover from before. Any ideas or info concerning the manifold antifreeze leaks?
Also, I had the car in because some of the charcoal "paint" flaked off of some leather on the left hand rear door. The dealer said this was normal wear and tear, but at the area this happenned, it is not an area to get wear and tear. Has anyone else had the color flaking off the interior leather? The size in ours is about the size of a quarter.

    I remember you.
Scroll back and we have been talking about the thermoplastic intake plenum/ manifold base warping.
We will add you to the list of Impalans that have had to have this replaced.
  • drivinisfundrivinisfun Member Posts: 372
The same exact thing happened with my '01 Impala LS (Back track and read the last 40 posts or so) as the car was diagnosed with an external uppermanifold coolant leak.

I am afraid that the upper plastic manifold intake plenum has also failed in your car and it is leaking coolant on the right side of the engine, hence, the strong antifreeze smell when you shut off the engine.

My car had the upper manifold replaced less than 2 weeks ago and it is all fine now. Also my coolant level was mysteriously dissapearing for several months until the odor became evident in November.

This is a 4 to 5 hour repair job, so plan to leave your car for at least 1 day at the dealer if they happen to have a replacement manifold in stock.

A Coolant system pressure test performed at your dealer prior to begin any repairs should reveal the presence of a leak in the plastic manifold.

Very common problem in GM's 3800 Series II V6 engine (Otherwise an excellent motor).

You are the 5th or 6th owner in this thread that has had the manifold replaced in their Impalas with less than 20K miles on the odo.

Good luck, don't wait any longer. Also check your oil just in case coolant is not leaking inside the engine block. (Very serious damage may occur)

10K fewer Impalas sold last year but December was up 49% with 21,000 sold!
$3000 rebate or 0% 60 months has been continued until Feb 28 th.
    Get you one.

I have not had any paint related issues with my '01 LS. The Sandrift metallic finish has held up extremely well. I am very happy with the paint quality of this car. What color is yours?
  • drivinisfundrivinisfun Member Posts: 372
One thing we need to realize as "fervent" Impalans, is that this never ending string of rebates and Zero percent financing deals are killing the resale values of our cars.

GM needs to stop this nonsense. The Impala is a terrific car that can sell alone on its well known virtues. GM has placed themselves in a predicament with all these cheap deals and by failing to keep the cars updated and fresh to gain public interest or at least keep up with it.

Basically today a new 2003 Impala looks, feels, behaves exactly the same as the very first model year 2000 edition when it was launched in April 1999. That's where the real problem lies.
  • b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
Yep. I have said it before. Impala's MSRP has gone up $1000 per year. Lexus LS 430 has gone up $500.
Impala has $3000 rebate. Lexus doesn't.

Gm needs to price their cars closer to what the actual transaction prices are.

Got a quote from my "invoice plus $98" dealer.
Bronzemist LS, leather, power seat package, XM radio, DIC, 1SB package, spoiler delete, radio upgrade, side airbag. MSRP $27,235 my price $22,2XX. About 1K more than my '01 LS but without Onstar. But with XM.

If I could get out of the '01 for less than 2K I would buy it.

The paint problem I have is the INTERIOR paint that they used to color the leather. It had started to blister or flake off in a couple of spots. I tried to haggle with the service manager that with only about a year and a half and 17,000 miles on the car that it should have been covered by their 36mo/36,000 bumper to bumper warranty and that the leather panel on the inside of the rear drivers door was between the front and rear bumper, but he would not hear of it. I even called Chevrolet customer assistance and they sided with the service manager saying it was wear and tear. Gee, I was wiping the panel off to get some dust that blew in, off of it and like I said the couple of quarter sized pieces of dye or paint just came off with the rag.

Alas, our Impala has what I believe to be the ISS clunk. This has been going on for about two months now. Due to not being able to make time to get it to a dealer I have just been putting up with it. It got really bad after about a month, but after the last few snow storms we had, the clunk has all but gone away. I had been following the ISS issue in this forum, and was under the impression that intitially the ISS was being replaced. Now I guess some sort of grease is applied to the ISS to quiet it down. I am of the opinion if there is a clunking, then that indicates there is excessive clearance in the ISS and no amount of grease will fix it. That's almost like throwing sawdust in your noisey manual transmission to quiet it down when you sell it. I spoke to the service manager about it, and he stated that there can be 3 things that can cause this clunking that I feel in the steering wheel. One he mentioned was the ISS, the second being the cradle, and he never mentioned the third. Is it possible that through my postponing the greasing of the ISS, that the grease that was in the shaft from initial assembly had gotten washed out and replaced by a rusting action that could build up the tolerances? Isn't the ISS located outside of the passenger compartment on the firewall above the rack assembly?
The service manager said he would have to check all three items out to find the clunk. I would hate to have him create a problem with the cradle or other part, by just have him trying to "shotgun" the problem. Is there a positive way to isolate what the source of the clunking is?

Got my car back yesterday, here is what my invoice said:
    ----
"Cust reports low coolant light on, check and advise. Pressure tested cooling system and found throttlebody gaskets leaking. Replaced Throttlebody gasket."

    QTY 1 Number 17109532 Description Seal 3.336
    Unit Price 33.85
    Total Parts 33.85
    Labor 105.00
    Misc Shop Supplies 14.00
    -----

I hope that ends the problem, but you can be sure I'll be keeping a close eye on the coolant overflow tank level from now on.

and to Frankf3: At the 9 and 3 position on my steering wheel I have noticed a little wear in the color, they should have wrapped that part of the wheel in leather also. So far no other interior color comming off on mine yet.

    Have a great weekend

    Hi, I am a new-be.
I am in the middle of buying a new chevy
Impala LS 2003. I transfered plate and bought
the insurance for this car through the phone.
I was about to sign the purchase contract and pay the dealer the money. Before I did anything final,
I checked through my new car, and found that there were two scratches on back bump and trunk, a deep chip in the black rubber around the license plate. They are noticable. The dealer used some cleaner to fix it, but it did not help. Therefore, I did not sign the contract and did not pay the dealer yet. The dealer promised me that he would fix the problem.

Did you guy have similar experience? How did
your dealer deal with this business?

     Thank you very much.
  • johnclineiijohnclineii Member Posts: 2,287
Do NOT accept delivery on the car, or sign ANYTHING until the car is acceptable to you. Once money has changed hands, or the obligation to pay has transferred, it will be far more difficult to do anything.

How were you able to transfer the plate when ownership of the car has not transferred?
  • sharkheadsharkhead Member Posts: 2
At this moment, I signed two signatures,
one is the signature on the DMV registration
application form. This one authorizes my dealer to transfer my old plate and car registration to the new car, this signature will go to DMV to obtain the registration for the new impala.

Another one is the signature on car title transfer
form. After I signed these two forms, I decided to see the car first.

I did not sign the customer-dealer purchase agreement which lists the itemized price. Therefore, the ownership is not transferred completely yet.

Does anyone here live in the midwest? Say around the Michigan/Illinois area?

I currently have my 00' LS in for the coolant odor. No visible leak but I have had to top off the overflow tank twice in the last 14 months and I smell the anti freeze when I park the car in the garage. I just got off the phone with service and they don't smell it. Thet see no visible signs of leaking coolant and the pressure test held up fine. The service advisor tells me there is no dye they can use with the Dexcool antifreeze.

  • drivinisfundrivinisfun Member Posts: 372
I was told the same exact thing when I took my car for the first time for the coolant smell. They did a pressure check on the cooling systen and everyhting came back OK.

2 weeks later I was back at the dealership for the same problem. The did the pressure test again and found a leak coming off the plastic manifold plenum on the right side of the engine. Manifold and gasket had to be replaced under warranty. Repair took about 4 to 5 hours to complete. Also my cooling system was flushed and new Dexcool added.

If the coolant smell continues YOU DO HAVE A LEAK!.

Insist on having the plastic intake manifold and gasket inspected and replaced.

Its been 2 weeks since the repair and all is well.

    Hey, great!
I'm trying to get Digital Horsepower Performance to go ahead and release a DHP PCM for the Impala. They said it would be no problem, but they need a test car to get the PCM code and everything. Do you know anyone with a 2002 Impala LS that lives in the Michigan/Illinois areas?? Would you be willing to let them look at your computer for a couple hours? That is where DHP is located, and it would really help if we could get somebody to volunteer their car for a couple hours so we could all have a DHP available for our cars! I'm hoping to get one in a Performance Package at the end of this month, but the DHP is unavailable for the Impalas as of now due to this problem. Please let me know!

If DHP is serious about releasing a PCM for our cars then they should go rent one for a day.
I would think there are plenty of us who would be interested in improving the performance.

Due to bad front end alignment I will need tires soon.
I have purchase many sets of tires from tirerack so I will use them again.

    Eagle GA $79.
    Eagle LS $79.

Had the LS's on the Intrigue and they were okay.
The GA's have been okay too.

    Any ideas?

I replaced the Tigerpaws on my Base 2000 Impala with Goodyear Eagle HP and have been pretty happy with them. better handling than the tigerpaws, more confidence in rain and snow than the tigerpaws too. The ride is a little harsher though, not as "cushy" and soft as the tigerpaws.
  • atbearatbear Member Posts: 322
Thing is b4z, I'm only 1 of like 2 people who have asked them about it.... I'm sure they could care less about releasing one for us. They would do it just for me since I ask them like everyday haha.... but they do need a test car.. know what I mean? Whenever we try to get something release, we have to provide the core part, that's how works (like with the SpeedHut IPs) Disclaimer: DHP didn't actually say what I said, but that's basically why we don't have one yet, not enough interest. They have them for Grand Prixs and Regals....
  • atbearatbear Member Posts: 322
So having said that.... Is someone who lives in the midwest willing to be a test vehicle for a couple hours to get this released for us?? I'd really really appreciate it!

I'm trying out Dunlop SP Sport A2's on my vehicle next and have read good things about them, probably in another 6 months as the Pilot's will be ready for pasture with 40,000 miles.
  • johnclineiijohnclineii Member Posts: 2,287
Dunlop Sport A2's on mine for about 15,000 miles now. BEST tires I have had on it so far. Far better grip, quiet and seem durable. I had Goodrich Tiger Paws on it immediately before, and for the first 35,000 miles they were fantastic. And then the hydroplaning started, and I got rid of them! The Eagles that came with the car? I HATED THEM. Period.

Has GM issued any new design contoured mudflaps to fit my 2001 Impala? Last I remember, you had to get a set that fit a 2000 then either modify them or the car to fit.
  • atbearatbear Member Posts: 322
Don't know if you want to spend the money but the most recommended tires on the ClubGP for good Performance/Handling/Traction were the Bridgestone Potenza RE730's, Firestone Firehawk SZ50-EP's, and the Bridgestone Potenza RE950's. Just adding a little to the discussion. I think I'll probably get the RE950's to be a little more conservative cause they wear a little better.
  • otto42otto42 Member Posts: 33
The front molded splash guards fit the 2001 and 2002 model just fine. But no, there's no rear flaps that fit either one. I installed the front ones and that was good enough for me, for now.

Actually, it says on impalahq.com that part number 12498346 is a rear molded guard that will fit the 2001 model. I can't find any other info to confirm that though.

As I said in a message last week, I had throttle body gaskets changed out, but now I am getting the low coolant light when I start the car until it warms up, about 10 minutes.

The coolant if full in the radiator and it is full in the reserve. Is there any way to reset the sensor (as with the tire monitor or oil life monitor)? Or maybe the garage did something when they fixed the gasket, because the monitor worked fine before. Guess I gotta make another appointment.

    Anyone have suggestions?
    Thanks
