First, thanks for all your feed back very helpful.Test drove ex Friday, I enjoyed it. Mine will be in this week. It just so happened to not be spoken for. Traded in saturn. not worth a dime. Thankfully I did not lose my shirt on it. Is there a rule that finance and sales managers have to be( )? Had my own finance. 1800 for extended warranty? Said they would only recognize honda warranty no others, no sale. With good resale will probably sell or trade before. thanks for handa I'll check it out. I'll let yall know what I really think of my 02ody after a week of travel.
  • dchoppdchopp Member Posts: 256
You got hosed on the Extended warranty. I would go back and tell them to take it off or renegotiate it. The internet prices are around $900. I paid $825 for my 7 year 100000 mile warranty. The dealer was going to charge me $1500 and I said I can purchase one on the internet through a Honda Dealer for $825. So they sold it to me for that price.

I did not buy the extended warranty. ie no sale. What site and what dealer so I can take a crack
  • dchoppdchopp Member Posts: 256
Check back on some of the archives and you should find them. There are some in Texas etc. Or you could ask on this forum.I know quite a few individuals have purchased them over the last few years.

Anybody gotten any deals in the upper midwest? Out of Minneapolis, I am wiling to loop to Green Bay, Chicago, Des Moines, and Sioux Falls (anybody with experience at Vern Eide?). Looking for an LX w/keyless and CD =OR= base EX - all depends on the deal. Prefer the 2003 with the Dark Blue...

    Any insights are appreciated!
2003 Honda Odyssey EX-LRES - Midnight Blue Pearl
2004 Honda Accord EX-L Graphite Pearl
2007 Honda Civic EX - Atomic Blue
2013 Honda Civic LX - Crimson Pearl

We are looking at the 2002 LX w/keyless entry, security system and towing system. Our best price out the door (taxes, etc) was $27,800.00 in Cleveland. We don't care about the roof rack, CD, leather seats etc. After living with an 87' toyota corolla without air conditioning (and a non-working drivers door) this is about as much luxury as we can stand at the moment!
  • liebesiliebesi Member Posts: 33
I was told the Dark Blue would be the late color in 03 like the Light Blue was this June the Dark Blue will be a June 03 color. Could be wrong..and was also told getting the black will be near impossible??

How did you manage to get under MSRP? We desperately need a van, would love to have an Odyssey but they are a little out of our price range. Any tips?

Two contacts I know that will sell for exactly MSPR (no dealer add-on stuff).

I actually got the deal that the owner of the dealership gives to his employees which is $1,000 over invoice or about$2,000 under MSRP, that's why I got the EX-L RES, great price! I guess it pays to know someone on the inside (they still made $2075 ($1000+$906 holdback+$169 on me, I don't feel guilty). They do sell their entire allotment each month so I am glad they gave me the deal. I did have to pay a $169 doc fee but I didn't complain much!

I felt everyone's pain before we got it though, I checked with every dealer in town and could not even test drive one anywhere! Best bet is to stay in touch with a dealer selling for MSRP and if they get any extras or cancels you can jump in and maybe offer them a few hundred under MSRP to come and get it now! Other than that you will probably have to order one like the rest of us and wait 6-8 weeks. Sorry, no magic negotiations..

there is no such thing as www.handa.com
or at least they haven't yet finished their web-site.

So why promote this site as the place to go for Honda accessories?

Interesting e-mail exchange with Rosenthal Honda at Tyson's Corner today for those of you in Northern VA looking for Odysseys. I was following up on their "never to be repeated pricing on Odysseys" sales event ad in the WA. Post.

Trying to buy an EX-L with NAV via the Internet. About 2 in 4 dealers want to play "call me" but Rosenthal said Yes, we have one, yes, special sale price- We usually mark them up $3000 OVER MSRP...however, special sales price is ONLY $1000
over MSRP plus the ever popular "procesing fee" and other fees. That (according to the Internet sales manager) was the GM's "low water" mark. Hmmm, there must be some pretty high streams in Tysons Corner these days. Esp since I countered with a full MSRP offer/no processing fee/additional accessories at dealer price.

Good news is that Honda City is quoting $500 off MSRP (Brown's at Glen Burnie, MD) in July for those who wish to wait. That offer arrived while I was negotiating with the Rosenthal manager from a previous request several days old.

I seem to recall the Toyota Sienna once had a waiting list too and sold at MSRP. I suspect Honda's day is coming.

Rosenthal may have just made the decision for me to shop for something else (and definately SOMEWHERE else), esp in view of the experiences the others of you have had with Honda dealers.

Happy Fourth, folks. Try to reflect on the reason for the holiday. Cheers! JC

May we never forget to protect and exercise our freedom! Our freedom of choice to walk away from greedy dealers' overcharges, and to choose a competing dealer or brand.

I was referred to a dealer in southern CA since someone I knew worked there. They gave me a great deal...$27000 out the door, with all the taxes and fees. This was for the 2002 Honda Odyssey LX
But there was one drawback, I had to wait until the car arrives at around mid-august since they had to order it.
Anyone have any advice in ordering an odyssey? And is this waiting time average to get a newly built odyssey?
  • rainbow24rainbow24 Member Posts: 26
I may suggest going to D-Patrick Honda in Evansville. I purchased a 2002 EX model for sticker there from David Mackiewicz, he was a great salesman. They only charge sticker, taxes, and a 100.25 proc. fee. They also don't require you to buy the service plan, that is up to you to buy if you want one. Their selection is excellent and the wait for one is around 1-1 1/2 months to custom order. Great Salesman and great Dealership. I didn't feel took when I bought my Odyssey there. Highly Recommend buying there.

Does anyone recommend any dealers in southern california? I have several great deals but I still have to wait for the Odyssey. I REALLY need this van this moment. Thanks

    Hi all,
I'm from So Califo, I am new to this discusstion, and I am in a hurry to getting a Odyssey LX (I need a Mini Van and I have no problem with Honda (It just keep on going)).

Anyway, after shopping around with 3 dealers in LA county and Orange County, it seems they don't carry many LX's and the Color that I wanted (EverGeen).

My Question is: Why is most people paying above the MSRP for this Vehicle? I know Odyssey is Nice Vans, but what happen to the good old day where you can buy a car for $300 or less over the Invoice?
One of the Salesman told me that there was 2 plan the make Odayssey, now they've closed one of them, that's why they don't make many Odyssey, is this true?

    Thanks in Advance

Well, I've about had it with Honda. I went to Thomason Honda here in Portland, OR. Sat down with the sales manager and told him I knew exactly what I wanted and how much I wanted to pay for it. A few minutes of his chit-chat, then he pushed a piece of paper my way with a figure on it and asked, "Is this anywhere close to what you're thinking?". About all I could do not to burst our laughing. The figure on the paper was $31,400 -- for an EX! What, they want to take me for nearly $7,000 for a 1/2 hour of work? Sheesh!

I still can't believe the arrogance of Honda dealers. Yes, they have a great van, but its a van devoid of so many features available on their competition's vehicles. If I'm going to spend that kind of money, I'll geat some other van with more features. Bah!

    Hi Rideboy

    $26,500? is it used?
  • brunnabrunna Member Posts: 53
response to jalh on S and S in Bel Air. I've talked with the sales manager on 3-4 occasions and still get the same $700 under MSRP deal on an EX. Now my wife says she wants leather and RES perhaps. Guess what? S and S has 3 of them (2 silver and 1 gold). I was thinking of offering $1000 over invoice for any EX-RES no matter what color. Anyone have any luck with this "normal" negotiation tactic at any Honda dealer? It used to work all the time!
  • alyssazmomalyssazmom Member Posts: 142
    Navyair,

I bought a 2002 Honda Civic EX Sedan in jan. 2002 using www.carbargains.com. Basically, you pay them $200.00 and they get you at least 5 quotes from area dealers and the dealers have to honor them. It takes the leg work away from you! I will definitely use it again for my next car.

It took them 3 days to e-mail me my report and I ended up going to Bethesda for my Civic where I paid invoice for my Civic. In the report it gives you the name of the person who has submitted that quote to CarBargains plus any add-on costs such as processing fee (only $25.00 in MD), pinstripes, roof racks, etc. Rosenthal (the scum thieves that they are- and avoid their service dept. at all costs) wouldn't even agree to giving CarBargains a quote!

It's worth the free time it gives you to not have to worry, negotiate, and headaches. Its only for the Washington/Northern VA/MD area.

    Hope this helps,

    Carrie

If it's a basic EX, then that's more than $4,000 over MSRP. Like any big-ticket item sold under a negotiation process, the salesman was just looking to make sure he didn't "leave any money on the table". There are probably enough people who pay these inflated asking prices, or close enough to them, that the salepeople would be crazy to at least not throw it out there and see what happens. The key is to not be insulted; the salesperson will quickly learn that you are knowledgable if you just calmly tell him/her what are you willing to pay.
I don't know where you come up with them "taking you for $7,000", unless you have calculated the dealer invoice on an EX to be $24,400. If this is the case, they are still entitled to make a profit on the sale, but like anything else, it's a supply and demand situation. As long as people are addicted, $5 for a pack of cigarettes that probably costs less than $.50 to manufacture isn't ridiculous either. So as long as people think an Odyssey is a good value at MSRP (or above), they will continue to buy them. Don't blame the dealers; they sell at "market value" which is established by the consumers. If you want to complain about dealers, complain about the sneaky tactics often done to enhance the margin, particularly mandatory add-ons sold at preposterous prices ($10 worth of Scotchguard, $5 door-edge guards, and $60 mudguards does not constitute a "protection package" worth $500).

We just bought a 2002 EX from the internet dept at David McDavid Honda in Houston for 26,510. The salesperson told us they ship them all over the place and have people come in from as far away as Arkansas and Mississippi. Great experience. Only problem was that they couldn't(wouldn't)sell us a Honda Care warranty. We passed on their third party warranty.

Anyone know a good place to get a Honda Care warranty?
  • rideboyrideboy Member Posts: 7
The price of $26.500 for the ex. was for a new one right off the lot.
Got the same price quote from Rudolph Honda in El Paso,T.X.
  • bjk2001bjk2001 Member Posts: 358
You could get Honda care 7/10000/0 for $865-875. from quite a few honda dealer.
Here are a couple threads I found out.

    Tracy McCrystal 800-264-3275.

    Donna 1-877-476-4265 X 8011.
  • ohloneohlone Member Posts: 55
I can sympathize with the folks out there trying to buy an Odyssey at MSRP. You'd think the dealers would be more than happy to take your order or at least be square with you.

With that said; if you're in a hurry and refuse to pay dealer mark up and are not lucky enough to find one sitting on a lot out there, then I would have to recommend the Toyota Siena. Considering availability, the Siena was a very close second place in my book. Toyota will work off the invoice and offer a low APR.
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
Baja-try checking in with as many dealers as possible. Offer MSRP on the LX if you're truly serious about buying it, and tell them your preferred color. You can find email addresses at Honda's website, which has a nifty search feature for locating dealers.

    Tight lines!
  • navyairnavyair Member Posts: 202
    Carrie,

Appreciate the advice, but suspect it is an apples/oranges comparison. (Ourisman already quoted MSRP and order i with a wait...same deal available at 2 dealers much closer). Civics are being heavily discounted by lots of dealers (car dealer's previous post here said he gets 15X profit from Ody as he does from Civic). I might check with USAA buyers service though...good point on using the buyers service to check.

Northern VA dealers seem to have lots of customers who will pay MSRP+ and even charge to get on the list to get one. Then they load up with processing fees (which are NOT required, btw). Right now, I'm really torn. I like the NAV feature, but will might go with another van to avoid the Honda dealers. I can add NAV and DVD on a less expensive van and still come in under the price of the ODY Nav.

    Thanks for your comments, Carrie.

    Hi,

I've got a dealer in Florida who has a 2002 Ody EX that he says was made for the Canadian market. He states that the dealership purchases up to 10 of these at a time since it is hard to keep a supply of US market Ody's. Has anyone else heard of this happening? Is it legal to sell them here in the US?

The salesman said that there are only minor differences such as a stronger front bumper. I would appreciate any information or advice concerning this issue.

    Thanks,

    Tom

The Canadian has a few good features like Heated mirrors. I have heard on this forum however that U.S. Dealers will not honor the Warranty. Call customer service and ask them about that. I think that is a no no what they are doing.
  • kkcymrukkcymru Member Posts: 48
Actually, carbargains is not limited to the Washington DC area. In fact, they describe a different procedure for ordering from Texas, because of Texas laws.

For it to work though, you have to be in an area where there are several dealers to get bids from within a reasonable distance.

The bigger problem with the Ody is that carbargains might not save you much if none of the dealers in your area are willing to cut the price. You have to save the cost of carbargains just to come out even ($190 for Washington Consumer Checkbook nonsuscribers). I plan on using carbargains in the next few weeks, but I plan on getting a Mazda MPV which dealers are more willing to deal on. (Nothing against the Ody, which I really like even at MSRP, but for the DC/Northern VA driving and parking, I prefer the smaller van.)

Your best bet for saving may be waiting, if you can. Honda has announced that it is planning on doubling the output of it's Alablama factory by 2004. (I don't know if they are slowly ramping up production to this rate, or if it all comes online at once.) They've already increased production once from their planned rate. Eventually supply should start to catch up with demand and the premium should drop.
  • hschultzhschultz Member Posts: 42
$1,500 under INVOICE yesterday when I test-drove an MPV ES from a local Durham dealership. I'm still having problems getting any better than $500 off sticker for an Ody, so I thought I'd check with the local Toyota dealer on the Sienna (was offered $1,000 under Invoice on an '02 XLE), and went next door and was offered $1.5 under for the MPV. Unfortunately for us, both test-drives (I'd driven them both before, several times actually) just re-iterated that we really do like the Ody that much more and are prolly going to get one regardless of the price. Rats. I hate passing up a good deal.

I find the two biggest detterents to grey market cars are safety and smog compliance. Since all Odyssey's are ULEV and are the safest in their class I wouldn't worry about buying a Canadian "version" of the car. Unless the warranty wouldn't be honored. I would think if a Candian moved to the states with his/her new Odyssey, that Honda would cover the warranty in the US.

This should be an easy enough question to ask any US service desk at a Honda dealer.

    Second attempt.

Thanks for the responses and advice concerning this issue. I spoke to US Honda about this and they stated that the warranty would not be honored if the car is purchased in the US. I asked how they could let a dealer do this and she stated that each dealer is an independent business and they can get their cars from any source they choose! They ran the VIN number and it did not come up as an American Honda VIN, but they did verify that it was a Honda VIN.

The moral of this story is that buying a car like this would not be prudent. Especially so since a local dealer in my area is selling US ones for $200 below MSRP.

While we encourage endorsements of dealers with whom you've had good experiences, it can look too much like a promotion or solicitation when you include salespersons' names and phone numbers, email addresses or other detailed contact information. Some people may not want that info stuck on the net, and we don't have resources to verify that this kind of info is legit. Thanks!

Sorry to hear of so many folks problems with finding or obtaining an Ody. I was lucky, got mine in a week. I was open to all colors but white and beige. had a silver one not spoken for. I have 850 mi on it now. Never thought I'd say I love a car. but I do after driving a 5m saturn for two years. A/c great in Tx heat. I dealt with Three dealers. Seemed that the biege was always the most common ordered. While visiting in east Tx I saw an 02 lx on the lot of honda dealer Shocked me. As far as warrantys go I went yahoo "honda warranty"several legit honda warranty sites way below what the dealer offered me. Happy hunting
  • dchoppdchopp Member Posts: 256
Do you have a dash pad on the Ody. Out in Vegas, its a must for the A/C to keep up with the heat. I plan on moving there (live in Pa.) some day and it seems all the locals have the dash pads.
  • geh86geh86 Member Posts: 11
I spoke to a local Honda salesman today about pricing an Ody. He offered sticker (MSRP) for the car when I expected a ~$1100 markup as Edmund's TMV suggested (I was shocked). Would it be outrageous to ask for a portion, if not all, of the Hold Back off the MSRP considering the vehicle will not sit on the lot for more than 24 hrs after it arrives?
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
No, it would not be advisable to ask for holdback. He has at least a month to sell the van and there's sure to be another customer for it.
  • bdaddybdaddy Member Posts: 171
I'd try and get a few extras thrown in - like splashguards and a cargo mat. I bought my EX-L for -$500 and the splashguards installed. You can do it if you're in there ready to do the deal.
  • geh86geh86 Member Posts: 11
    bdaddy: Thanks for the suggestion.

Anyone else have success stories/advice on how they purchased an Ody EX below sticker or at sticker with extras? I know beggars can't be choosers with Honda, but if I am ready to deal, they should be willing to bargain/negotiate somewhat.

Want to get a good deal. Buy a Town and Country. Rebates, 7 year warranty plus you can get all those options also.
