I recently got quoted MSRP from a dealer in suburban MD. Anybody do any better here? We need more space than our VW Jetta can offer the four of us, so I guess it's time for the minivan. Also, I was told MSRP would go uypi $300 or so for 2003's. Anybody hear anything? I am wondering whether to try to grab a 2002 since there are only suppoed to be minor changes.
alot of buyers share their pricing combined with a trade in. This really means little to figuring out what the Odyssey is really selling for since the dealer is surely making something of "taking" your used car off your hands.
biyonic: selling a used jeep GC will be difficult these days since they offer them new with all kinds of incentives. It's also easier to sell an AWD in the winter. But one thing for sure, is the dealer will insult you with an offer for a car you spent your hard earned money on. They are likely to offer you $3k less than wholesale ($3k less than what Edmunds says is wholesale)
it's no fun selling used cars in this economy and that's precisely why the dealer will insult you.
After some abuse I'm getting a thick skin about what my Jeep is worth on trade.
The problem is I am really getting a bad taste about this whole Ody thing. Like is it really worth all this trouble? My wife and I are up and down about it - should we keep the Jeep can we handle the payments of the Ody. Our young kids don't know what to make of all the comotion. I have dealers calling every hour. And the lies! I have never dealt with such slime before and I am a salesman.
I owned a civic in college - bought it new. My wife owned an all white prelude Si - bought it new. Now I drive an old Acura Legend - very reliable. This whole Honda hysteria thing has exploded into a living breathing monster.
Anyway thanks for the feedback. We will get one some day. In fact someone came to look at the Jeep today and its not even in the paper yet - so that is a good sign.
Just a quick note to thank you all for posting your comments. The information proved helpful as I negotiated the purchase price. The deal is summarized below. Hopefully it will help you in your buying process.
2003 Honda Odyssey EX-L with RES (DVD Entertainment System)
Congrats! I thought Carge Net is standard for EX (which is useless for us). Do you need crossbar for roof rack? I heard people complained about too much wind noise from crossbar.
I faxed all the dealers here where i live (TX) my preference for EX-L in silver and asked for $500 under MSRP plus an option to have the right to buy the next redesigned Odyssey (2004 model?) at no more than MSRP within six months of it's release date. One dealer called back and actually said they would knock off $800! However they would charge me $250 for doing an in-and-out transaction with our current vehicle (this allows me to sell our RX 300 privately but route the transaction through the dealer, thereby saving me about $1600 in sales tax on the Odyssey). It's like doing a trade-in, but getting top dollar for your vehicle. Am I mistaken or is this a decent deal??? I need to give an answer tomorrow to dealer.
While the EX-L is not in as high demand as the EX-L with DVD, $800 under MSRP sounds good to me provided there are no other "dealer fees" involved.
I am surprised that they came back $300 below what you offered. I had to fight for everything I negotiated. More power to them if they want to save you money.
Regarding the in and out transaction, if it will truly save you $1,600 and cost $250, why not. However, I am not familiar with your state tax laws and am probably not in a position to offer guidance on it.
no, i don't want 2 odys (even as good as they are)......the one i'm buying now is a 2002 model and i would again sell it to an individual and buy the 2004. BTW, do you guys think i'm taking too much in depreciation by getting a 2002 model now vs. waiting for a 2003 and paying $400 more and maybe not getting a discount on it? when it comes time to roll into a 2004, i would rather lose as little value as possible.
I am not sure what the difference in value would be between a 2002 and a 2003 after one year, but I understand that after 5 years it would be around $1,000 to $1,500 for a vehicle in the Odyssey price range.
Having said that, I just ran a comparison of a 2001 and a 2000 Odyssey in the used car pricing section of this site. The difference between the two was around $1,400.
I negotiated my price on a 2003, so I would ask the dealer you are working with for a price on the 2003. If the price costs no more then $500 or so, I might opt for the 2003.
Okay KKH, it's killing me, without breaking the 'rules' can you tell us what dealer gave you such a great deal on the 2003. Just the name will do, without all the contact info (well maybe a first name and last initial..)
even though they say $800 off MSRP, they want me to pay $150 for the in-and-out trade and $160 for mud guards/cargo tray. to me the net savings isn't as great as i want. we're now dickering over the mud flaps/cargo tray. i hate this. the good thing is i'm doing it via email rather than wasting my time at the dealership.
does anyone think that '03 production will increase over the '02's, thereby making it easier to find an odyssey and get a deal on one. usually the last year or 2 of production runs are the biggest and the supply/demand equation changes.
my guess is that you're going to start seeing better deals on odysseys this next 12 months. then we may be back to MSRP plus for the 2004's!
2003 production is scheduled to be increased. I agree with your assessment and expect the price to decline as the supply catches up with demand. However, I am not sure I agree that the 2004 supply/demand ratio will get as out of balance as the current models have been.
By the way, I was told the 2003 pricing should be announced around August 29th.
I live in Kentucky. The following is a quick summary of my purchase negotiation process after I identified the model and options I wanted.
I. Reviewed the pricing information available on this site (excellent) and others.
II. Reviewed other comments on this board for helpful information on what others were paying for the odyssey.
III. Prepared a written purchase offer outlining the model, color, options, and warranty, and the amount I was offering (excluding tax and license). The price I was willing to pay was $30,000. However, I made the offer for $29,500 to give myself some room to compromise.
IV. I personally visited one dealership and presented my offer to the sales manager. I telephoned another dealership and asked to speak to the sales manager. After speaking with the sales manager via phone, I emailed him my offer.
V. The sales manager I personally visited asked "could you be any more prepared" and asked if he could call me back the next day after he reviewed his incoming inventory. By the way, my original offer was for a 2002.
VI. Ten days passed before the sales manager had a salesman return my call. I then called the owner of the dealership and relayed my disappointment in their handling of my situation. He said they would find a way to reach an agreement and noted that he would have the general manager review my offer and contact me. I emailed him the details of my offer with one change ... three weeks had passed and I was now only interested in a 2003.
After review, the GM called me and said their initial offer of $30,500 was very strong, but the owner told him to "make this work". I said, lets split the difference and that is how we arrived at $30,000. He accepted with one qualification ... he asked that I not tell anyone they sold me the vehicle for that price.
I expect the vehicle in mid September and have not been asked to put any money down to hold the vehicle. They are also going to give me an offer for my trade-in which I can accept of elect to sell on my own instead.
So Jennifer, unfortunately I can not give you the name of the dealership. I gave my word that I would not tell anyone where I made this deal and I always honor my commitments.
By the way, I later heard from the other dealership who responded with the following message:
"Sorry I've taken so long in getting back with you on the request for a price on a 2003 Honda Odyssey. I have researched our pricing on the Odyssey's and the last 12 vans that we have sold with leather and DVD, the average discount has been approximately $200. Based on my pricing, you are looking for approximately $3000 discount. I'm sorry that I will not be able to get together with you. Thanks and good luck."
Sorry for the novel, but I hope this information helps you as you negotiate.
I recently was trying to push some buttons on a local Honda salesman to get his EX price closer to the $25,800 price I worked out on a 2003 Sienna Symphony from Toyota. The only was he could come close was with a 2002 Mesa Beige EX from Canada. NOw, I know I've read some input regarding these imports, however, are they to be kept away from with a ten foot pole? He offered $1000 off sticker making it $26210. Hmmmm. What do you think???????
Is he selling you an Ody made in Canada and to be sold in US or an Ody made and sold in Canada ONLY? If he is selling you an Ody is to be sold in Canada only, I don't think Honda will be very happy about your local dealership. Also you need to ask him about Honda US Warranty. Speedometer is it in KM or Miles? I personally won't buy a made for Canada Odyssey and have to deal with the hassle later.
As I understand it, it was made to sell in Canada and has had the modifications made to it for the spedometer, etc. Of course, Honda John (Salesman) insists that they thoroughly back up their product with even more warranty than their "American" product. (Ha ha) I trust very little a car salesman says. I want to get a "deal" and am infuriated with not being able to get those prices to budge from MSRP. I am a "write my own deal" and have them call ME back to close the deal kind of car buyer. Which is why this offer intrigues me. This only came about when I finally told HOnda John that I made a deal with Toyota and asked how he could come closer to their price. Although I know for a fact that they have an '02 EX on the lot that he ha been trying to sell me for over a month before it came in and it's still not sold. THAT'S the one I want. Both you and my gut tell me to back away from the Canada thing even though there's still part of me that says, "But you can have an EX Ody for the same price as a Sienna Symphony!!!!! Thanks for the feedback I need it!
Well, I just have more questions now. I suggest you to take a close look at his so called better than American Honda Warranty. I never have any good faith regarding the 3rd party warranty. Will this 3rd party warranty company be in business in next 3 years? Also will he (Honda John) be working for Honda dealer in next 3 years? It is very interesting that Honda John has already made all the speedometer modification. Can the buyer register Ody as a new car? What will the DMV odometer reading paper say? When I bought my 01, DMV paper said 4 miles. So he has the same 02 EX for over 1 month? mmm. I remembered when I was on waiting list for my 01 EX last year, one EX Ody came in, my saleslady called, I was out of the office the same day. When I called her back the next day, it was sold. Two weeks later she called again, I went in and took the delivery on the same day. Typical they sell all the Ody in less than 2 days. That was over 1 year ago, but still same Ody Ex for over a month. mmmmm?
i have been in car sales for awhile now and know almost all the tricks of the trade... i know everyone out there is just looking to save a buck or two and i can appreciate that.. one fair warning kkh... nothing is final until you finally ink up ... i work for one of the largest dealers in the nation and i have seen these vans go for a great price.. much better then the ones mentioned earlier but 3000 off??? believe me.. a dealership is never in so much of a bind to give that kind of a deal on a high demand vehicle... and especially give that kind of a deal just because they did not call you by the next day ... just my oppinion ... hope i am wrong.. good luck
Now you have ME thinking! I don't know the answers to those questions and I will have to do some calling in order to get you some answers. That makes it very intersting how they actually pull this off and why they would want to risk it! Back to the '02 (Havasu Blue) Ody on the lot, Honda John actually said things have quieted or possibly even said "slowed" down a bit lately. HAve they finally saturated the market? Maybe scared the rest of us off? Or is everybody else just waiting for the '03's now since the price is supposed to be within a few hundred dollars of the '02 and get a new year? One may never know! I'll keep you posted on when they finally move this Ody! And I will attempt to get some answers to your Canadien Ody questions.
Maybe I am just planning for the worst kinda guy. I don't know about your local auto sales market. Here in LA we have car salesperson jumped ships all the time. They move around the different dealership soo often you its hard to keep tracks of them. LOL. Also maybe just part of my job experience, I am an engineer by trade, in my early days I used to purchase factory manufacturing equipments quite often. We always asked (joked with) equipment sales, will the company be there in next 5-10 years for any technical support, spare parts support bofore we commited to purchase hundred thousands $$$ of capital equipmemnt. I know if I got factory warranty from Honda or Toyota .. I know they will be there in next 3yr/36,000 miles before my factory warranty runs out. But 3rd party warranty, in this economics who knows? Just my two cents.
I was reading about a purchase in Texas where the sales person said the buyer couldn't tell anyone the pricing they got.
This is a pretty old sales tactic that is used to prevent the person from shopping the price around and it is also used to make the person believe he/she worked hard and negotiated a good deal - prevents people from getting cold feet to further think about it.
I'm not saying the price wasn't a good one, but the tactic is rather sophmoric, to make you believe you can't share the price is silly.
My husband and I are going Odyssey shopping this weekend and after reading some of these posts I wonder if I should be afraid or what!!! Is this not a normal car to go shopping for; that I have to have statistics and printouts w/ me in order to even be CONSIDERED as worthy enough to even offer to purchase it??? Any advice or direction would be appreciated. I will be looking in the So. Orange County, CA area. I don't even know if any of the local dealers have any in stock, but that's another story I guess...
New to this wonderful forum and wish to say hello to all you good folks out there. So, H E L L O!
We are in the market for a "good and reliable" minivan and will appreciate ANY info on actual prices paid for an Odyssey EX and EX-L in the Calgary area. Any info will be useful.
raybear is right. Don't pay over MSRP in So Cal. Not sure how far you like to travel from So Orange County. We bought ours over a year ago from Metro Honda in Montclair. Spreen Honda in Loma Linda was selling @ MSRP. I heard Riverside Honda has good price too. I would call the dealership first or even ask online quotes from a few dealers before making your shopping route. If you haven't driven the Ody you need to test drive to make sure you are happy with the van. Good luck,
Welcome to Town Hall. You're looking at a brand new van, yes? Not sure of Canadian pricing up your way - maybe it'll get below MSRP before your new PM gets installed though! Steve Host SUVs, Vans and Aftermarket & Accessories Message Boards
If you look afraid sales people will see through you and try to nail you with a big mark up. Be confident in your offer and don't cave in just because some sales guy tells you he can sell it for more.
If this isn't your style, then I would suggest using the services of a broker who for a couple hundred bucks will likely get you one for MSRP and find the car for you somewhere in the state - a pretty good service for those not wanting to hassle the search on their own.
Run from the dealer only offering $1000 off sticker for a canadian Oddy in the states. Do you realize that with the exchange rates that you can buy a Canadian MDX Touring (almost 38k msrp in the states) for $30,500 at todays exchange rate? An EX oddy with the exchange rate is about 21k. I've done all the research, but it's such a hassle and I'v never dealt with 3rd party warranties especially when 30k is alot of money to put down and hope it's not a lemon. It's not an easy process and takes a few weeks to have everything ready for importation. The paper work is not that bad and since it's made in Canada, you don't pay tax coming across the boarder, the problem is getting a loan in us dollars, opening an account in Canada and most banks charge a fee to transfer the currency. If you have cash, importing is simple.
if you can save that kind of money it's very tempting. I'd pay cash or put it on a credit card and avoid the loan hassels. If I lived near the border you can bet I'd go for it.
You need to move over here to Buffalo! Then you could jog across the border and buy all the cars you want and maybe even check out the Falls on the way by!!!! Just being a little "flip" at this hour of the night! BTW I decided the Canadian Ody deal was too risky and obviously less than a deal!
I was just in Buffalo a few (couple?) of weeks ago. Did some of the citywide garden tour and the Martin house. Pretty fun, even if I did miss the Krispy Kreme at the mall. Gotta say the Falls are nicer in the off-season though!
Guess I should post this one more time for those considering importing an Odyssey to the States: Gray Area

Raybear thanks for the heads up on the OC sticker price add on. Also being new to the area (from hardened Los Angeles) we don't know what car salesfolk tactics they use here but will soon find out! I think we will test drive and then go from there. Thanks!!!
I'm glad you enjoyed your visit. What do you consider "off season" for the Falls. Too bad about the Krispy Kremes, though, they are quite an attraction around here. Thanks for the "Gray Car" article. I do remember browsing through that one before now that I see it again. I just wonder how "legitimate" dealerships bother to sell them and how do they get away with it. I saw quite a number of Odysseys with little notes on their windshields regarding not being covered by the American Honda warranty at this particular dealership. It seems a waste of their time.
Honda don't like their dealership selling Canada Honda to US customer. I am just amazed you have a local American Honda Dealer is selling Canada Odyssey in US. Wondering what will happen if Honda knew about this particular dealership. I guess your local dealer will not get Honda's President Award LOL.
My last visit was in the first week of October, 1999. Few tourists but still fine for camping. Only the Shaw was crowded but luckily got two plays in (as we did recently).
Lots of guys got Nissan Pathfinders until a few months ago when Nissan USA stopped honouring the warranty on Canadian purchased cars. Honda USA has had this policy for a long time, as far as I know, and they supposedly (as Bjk2001 notes) "punish" Canadian dealers who sell new cars to American dealers for resale with aftermarket warranties.
I understand that this is also a common practice in the European Union but may change with their new economic rules there. And there's been talk of using NAFTA to allow easier cross-border car sales here. Steve Host SUVs, Vans and Aftermarket & Accessories Message Boards
You lack tact and are an insult to Honda's previously, indisputably sound reputation. My local Honda dealer has respect for his customers.... Too bad you don't. What goes around comes around, and you will get bit some day!
It wasn't about showing tact geh86, do not attack my person I wouldn't deal with a customer using these words. I didn't post on this board trying to sell you a car either my reason for posting like this was to show exactly what goes on, why does everybody who claims to have gotten such a good deal also say they waited for their van. Respect for customers is one thing letting you know exactly the mindset of a dealer who can get a vehicle off his lot over sticker while Mr.MSRP is working him below MSRP is another. You won't find a nicer person than me my friend. This is a consumers board I just gave you very valuable insight maybe you should respect that. And I am not a Honda dealer but I do sell cars.
Unfortunately, at the same time you just reinforced the notion of the two-faced and/or hypocritical nature that tends to run among many sales persons and that is why so few are trusted today. Enough said...let's move on.
The only hypocrites are consumers, the biggest liars are consumers, a consumer won't pay suggested retail price for certain cars and we have no problem letting them deal on those cars yet when it comes to a premium vehicle we cannot charge true market value. No consumer ever willingly says you know what Mr.Sales guy here is an extra 1000 go and feed your family, but they lovingly take as much as they can out of his pocket whenever possible. This was about the Odyssey the availability of it and the premium pricing. Would you rather earn 20 or 100 geh86? We are not talking lemon here we are talking Honda Odyssey best mini van on the market, top tier resale value, and a wealth of reliability, this is not door to door sales where you are not sure if you ever see sales man again. Almost every consumer wants a deal, why shouldn't every sales man want to make more money. Ask yourself does the person that asks for a Civic at true market value and brings his research in from Edmunds(and gets it by the way),do they also ask for the Odyssey at true market value and bring in research NOOO. They want similar savings. Who is the hypocrite in this case scenario my friend. Just another point of view.
Sounds like capitalism at work - the only quibble I have is that car sales people move from dealer to dealer pretty often and that makes it hard to develop a long term relationship with someone.
But this is a pricing topic; again I'll recommend one of the SmartShopper considerate dealer/shopper discussions where this talk is more on topic. Steve Host SUVs, Vans and Aftermarket & Accessories Message Boards

If this isn't your style, then I would suggest using the services of a broker who for a couple hundred bucks will likely get you one for MSRP and find the car for you somewhere in the state - a pretty good service for those not wanting to hassle the search on their own.
is the availability the same in Canada?
You need to move over here to Buffalo! Then you could jog across the border and buy all the cars you want and maybe even check out the Falls on the way by!!!! Just being a little "flip" at this hour of the night! BTW I decided the Canadian Ody deal was too risky and obviously less than a deal!
Guess I should post this one more time for those considering importing an Odyssey to the States: Gray Area

unless you're a tall legy super model, I'm just not going.
You can get MSRP in parts of LA, Riverside, San Bernardino and the High Desert areas, and in Ventura County if you're willing to wait out an order.
Ohlone....I feel I'd better not comment.

You lack tact and are an insult to Honda's previously, indisputably sound reputation. My local Honda dealer has respect for his customers.... Too bad you don't. What goes around comes around, and you will get bit some day!
Anyone could advise me how much we could negotiate to get the van? I am in Dallas, TX.
Thanks a lot.
But this is a pricing topic; again I'll recommend one of the SmartShopper considerate dealer/shopper discussions where this talk is more on topic.

But it works both ways - when dealers offer money on someone's trade in, it's usually an unbelievably low offer - insulting really.
fortunately I sell software - it sucks in this economy, but at least I don't have to compete against someone with the same product in the next county.
